The sun streamed through the shades covering you two from the outside world and illuminated the face of the man next to you. He was still sleeping, but you knew he would be up soon as the sun was just emerging from the horizon. His arm had found you in the night and was now draped across your middle, holding you in the embrace you have found comfort in so many times.
Quiet moments where hard to come by in the apocalypse, so you cherished these few minutes of peace in you and Daryl's shared before starting the day.
The subtle rise and fall of his chest and his closed eyes was the calmest you ever saw him, and you tried to memorize every detail of his face in these minutes before life started up again.
Soon enough the urge to let him sleep was over run by the urge to touch him, and your hand moved from its position next to you and traveled his dark umber locks, pushing a few messy strands away from his face. Daryls nose twitched at the movement and his fingers tightened around your side, almost reassuring himself you where actually there before he blearily opened his eyes. As soon as he did his eyes closed again in a yawn.
"Morning sleeping beauty" You chided.
Daryl grumbled slightly but you could see the ghost of a smile hinting at his lips.
"Mornin'" His gravely voice was quiet, still weighed down by sleep. Arms stretching as he made a move to get up for the day his hand leaves your side and you frowed.
"Can't we just stay in bed a little longer?" You knew you both had jobs and duties to attend to, but you couldn't help yourself from wanting just five more minutes in bed with Daryl. After a second of silence he let his body fall back onto the bed next to you.
"If someone's pissed I's late to the council meeting m' blamin' you" He draped his arm around you again and you gladly cuddled into the comfort of his chest.

Kid With The Messed Up Face by TryingCrying
fills in the gap of time between Carl getting shot and when we see him next (s6 ep9-ep10). Really a beautiful exploration of Carl’s character, and touches on relationships and trauma that were absolutely neglected in the show.
NUMBER TWO:
Long Live the Queen by BeanSidhe_13
Basically Lori’s death if everyone had daemons because I’m an absolute sucker for His Dark Materials crossovers. Another just absolutely heartbreaking exploration of Carl’s character, and the one that I reread the most.
BONUS:
The North Star by Rezeren
this one has Judith as the main character, but Carl is soo important to the story. Set after Carl’s death with heavy themes of grief and growing up. (this one lowkey made me cry)

FIRST PLACE
From Whence we Came by AtlasNerd
this is honestly my favourite fic of all time. I go back and reread it at least once a month. I don’t even care that it’s most likely abandoned because it is just that good. It is THE saviour Carl fic and will probably always be my number one.
SECOND PLACE
What remains by noorvex
this is currently the one I’m most invested in because it’s updating very frequently. The jump in quality from the first chapters to the most recent ones is astounding, and the story is sooo good. Basically a fix-it starting at Carl’s supposed death. Reminds me of From Whence we Came in all the best ways.
THIRD PLACE
Faded Dreams (Shine Brightly Now) by EmlynC
time travel fix-it where Carl gets sent back to the very beginning. Character development for everyone is on point, and the story takes a lot of what-ifs from the earlier seasons and makes them real. Even though this one doesn’t update as much anymore, I still jump for joy whenever I get the notification.

Do you have any headcanons for the TWD comics character?
These two have the most unhinged banter ever. It’s either borderline death threats or the most soulful genuine conversations.
Also not really a headcanon but when I started reading the comics I thought Lori was Native American or at least mixed lol.

the kids in the walking dead are literally so much more interesting to me than the adults. (And I’m referring solely to the comics here because the show absolutely did not do any of the kids (especially Carl) justice) There’s just something about them not being fully developed people yet, because while the adults are just adapting to suit the environment, the kids are actively developing and coming into themselves in this new world. The adults like Rick, Andrea and Michonne all have years of lived experiences before the apocalypse that serve as a base layer of sorts to their characters. They are developed people, and no matter how much they adapt in the apocalypse, they will never lose that base of who they are. The kids, however, don’t have that. Their base layer is actively being formed while zombies are trying to eat them. This creates an interesting springboard for character development and the way the kids see and perceive the things happening around them, mostly because any development that happens is going to be extreme. Otherwise they die (see: Ron). This is most apparent with Carl (obviously), because he’s the main kid of the series. Moments like when he killed Ben when none of the adults would, solely because he deemed it necessary given what Ben had done are really pivotal to his character, and I think say a lot about the person he was becoming. Same with when he went after Negan, on his own. Anyways, what I’m trying to get at here is that all the kids who were directly exposed to the apocalypse are malleable. There’s an infinite number of directions their characters could take, and I relish in the possibilities. anyways that was my rant, go read the walking dead comics guys!!
