capitano runs into you by chance. it's a cold day in snezhnaya, as it usually was. the snow fell slowly, the sun was hidden behind grayish-white clouds, and the soles of his winter boots crunched hard into the ground. he expected nothing from the day nor from the people he would run into.
until he saw you.
"sir! sir!"
you were out of breath when you had caught up to him, your breath heaving heavily as you took a hold of his sleeve.
"what is it?"
he didn't try to hide his disdain or the fact that you were bothering him, but that didn't deter you. not in the slightest.
and you smiled at him. breathless and bright-eyed before raising your other hand, in it was a flower.
"for you, sir. i hope you have a wonderful day!"
you were a florist. your little shop being something he casually passed by without a second glance.
he took the flower you offered to him, and bid you farewell, but this time with a softer tone than before.
and as you ran off back to the front of your shop to get more flowers for each passerby, he decided that maybe he would walk down this road again tomorrow.

Then, before Capitano can reach him to cut him down, the boy turns. He is Snezhnayan, by his pallid complexion and hollow cheeks, and a little bit older than Capitano saw by the back of him- but still a boy, and perhaps still too young even to be made a soldier. A shame, to throw one’s life away so young. Capitano takes in the firm set of his shoulders and the Vision at his hip and sees, for a moment, a past so far gone it should be lost completely, folded away and washed out to sea like so much sand. Righteous conviction, baseless ambition. A mirror.
