Me writing Tawny into my story: 😏📝✍️

Me when I realize I don’t know how to draw a tiger: 😞💔

Excuse the random number written at the top. I did this drawing on a used sticky note, please forgive my hubris.

Also btw in Grimmland (my mind) Tawny communicates with other people with a magical pink gemstone embedded in their head. It gives Tawny the power of telepathy so they can communicate with The Wizard and Billy and stuff.

Okay kind of a different post than my normal stuff but I did just want to put all of these in one place. These are my character analysis slides that I’ve been working on!

Breaking down the character of Billy Batson has been so fun for me, and its by far my favorite part of the writing process. So here’s what I have so far for my interpretation of the character.

Here is my first slide where I breakdown the basic overview of my story. Just outlining the basic plot summary, the story’s themes, and the basic character arc for Billy.

As you can see it’s very similar to the first movie I’ve just modified some things here and there to add my own fun twist to Billy’s origin story.

In this slide is where I breakdown Billy’s passive motivation, something I see that is necessary for all superhero characters. Similar to Spider-Man’s “power and responsibility” thing, and similar to how Batman protects and values all life because his life was forever changed by a random act of violence.

I think Billy’s passive motivation to do good is really, deeply rooted in the injustice that he witnesses throughout his childhood. He’s especially receptive to the problems of children and other vulnerable groups because as a member of those communities, he knows they get overlooked often.

This next slide is my character breakdowns. This shows my main character and all my important side characters. They each have a lesson they inadvertently teach Billy, helping him along his path to become a good hero.

They each play a role on the team, giving them fun dynamics. This allows them all to have distinct personalities allowing for fun dialogue, banter, and character moments.

The only character you might not know on this list is Samara. She is my version of the character Cissie Sommerly. Cissie is a classic Captain Marvel character who’s most recent comic book appearance was 1978. Woof. So I thought it would be a fun idea to modernize her and bring her back into the spotlight, serving as a glimpse into the average Fawcett citizen’s reaction to the new hero, Shazam.

This next slide is a closer look into Billy’s character flaws. Showing how at first he is hesitant to being a brother and being a hero. It kinda explains the mistakes he makes at first that he has to learn to overcome, and shows how his introspection will help him accept his roles as both a brother, and a hero.

Next we have something that if I could add to the 2019 film, I would. I love love love the 2019 version of Shazam but if I could add a little more expansion of Billy’s mother into the plot, I would.

I think is really important to the core of the character. This next slide I like to call “The Dark Reflection”.

I think that upon meeting his mother, Billy realizes that they are scarily similar. That she was also selfish, careless, and only interested in meeting her own needs. This lack of compassion and responsibility from her are the reasons she ended up abandoning Billy, leaving him in the foster system once she was released from prison and having zero interest in raising him.

Billy sees the mistakes she’s made in life and realizes that he is making the same ones, prioritizing his own wants/needs over anything else, and being just overall emotionally detached.

This scares him into re-evaluating his own behavior and consciously choosing to become more compassionate for others and foster a real sense of responsibility to use his powers wisely.

Next up, we have what I like to call “The Pillars of Character”. These are the three main “pillars” I see that are most prevalent in Billy’s story.

It’s important to me that all three of these pillars intertwine with each other, hence why I wanted to explore a little more about Billy’s mother. Adding a little more flavor text to why she is Billy’s dark reflection really helped me keep a balance between these three aspects of his character.

I also just think having all three pillars effect each other keeps a nice balance between all the aspects of his character. Showing how his character flaws effect different parts of his life and how Billy learns to grow and change for the better.

In summary, this is what I have for Billy’s character breakdown, showing his character arc for his origin story and how he learns to grow into a hero. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed because I had a fun time making this! I also have a lot more to share like individual character sheets for Billy and all my side characters, Three act story structure break downs, and other stuff too. So if you like this one maybe possibly I could do a part 2 soon.

Work in progress!

This is my concept for the train car that Billy gets off of landing at the Rock of Eternity. I imagine the rock as a giant floating island that’s covered in jungle and rainforest plants, so I drew the train car after it gets magically transported to the rock so Billy can get his first glimpse of the magical other world.

Here’s Freddy’s design for both his regular form and his superpower form! ⚡️🩵

I was hoping to actually pick a different color for Freddy’s chest emblem however, I wanted to save a golden/yellow color for Mary’s design instead. But that’s okay I think he still works with a monochromatic and blue kinda vibe sooo yeah :)

Thinking of a concept,,, you know how sometimes in the Shazam/Captain Marvel stories they refer to the magic that the wizard gives Billy is called “the power of living lighting?”

Well I was thinking what if,,, possibly, maybe his “adult” form was actually composed of living light.

What does that mean? As for combat, I think it would mean that Marvel/Shazam cannot bleed because his body is not made of blood and organs it’s made of magic lightning.

I drew a quick edit of my Shazam drawing to try and explain this lol.

I also think that if Marvel/Shazam were to take too much damage in his superhero form then his body would “poof” and force him to transform back into Billy. Who is a mortal and can bleed.

I was gonna give each member of the Shazamly a different color for their lightning emblem on their chest. I think this would indicate the color of the “light” that their body is composed of.

Billy’s chest emblem is blue so if you hypothetically chopped off his arm, you would not see blood. You would see blue light. ~✨

PLEASE let me know what you guys think about this lol this idea has been in my mind for a while now I just didn’t know how to articulate it LOL

This is where my version of Billy eventually ends up interning at when he’s older.

It’s also the family owned company of the Sommerly’s. With Samara being Billy’s first introduction to doing radio broadcasting.

I was originally gonna add some characters to this scene but I think I prefer this version where it’s just kinda more of a lofi-chill beats background lol.

What project are you working on now?

Currently I'm working on writing my own version of Shazam to post here to tumblr.

The current title is Shazam: City of Brotherly Love or as I like to tag it Shazam:CoBL.

What's your version of the story gonna be about?

I have plans to outline Billy Baton's origin story and his new life at the Vasquez house. If you enjoy the new52 version of Shazam, or the 2019 movie you will see similar themes and character progressions.

Right now I currently don't have plans to make the entire story into a comic. However, I do plan on translating a handful of my personal favorite moments into small mini-comics. :)

Shazam: City of Brotherly Love

Chapter one: Work in Progress

(Revision: fight scene fix & grammar fix )

It was an early autumn day. The kind of day where the wind was cool and brisk, but the sun covered everything with a subtle warmth that I could feel against my skin. I was intermixed in the small crowd that was my new foster siblings as we walked down the block, on our way to school. It was my first day at Fawcett High, my second day at the Vasquez house, and my third time getting reassigned to a new home this year.

I’ve done a lot of moving around, especially these past few years, but I don’t let that stuff get to me. I am so close to actually finding my mom this time around. I’m just really hoping the kids in this group home actually leave my stuff alone. I always keep the most important things in my backpack anyways, because I get tired of people rummaging through my belongings when I'm not looking.

As Freddy and Mary talked amongst themselves, the youngest kid in the group home was most excited to give me a tour. Her name was Darla, and it was the easiest to remember because she wrote it on a banner she hung on the wall, over the bed I was sleeping in this past weekend.

She talked the entire time. And I felt kinda bad that she was wasting her breath, because I was only half listening anyways, tuning in and out of her descriptions as we made our way into the school. It was a very familiar scene. A sea of a thousand faces passing by. People talking, people screaming, people jumping, hugging, and twirling each other around as if they didn’t just see each other yesterday.

Darla’s voice pulled me back out of my train of thought. “And here’s the main hallway. This school is pretty big so if you get lost, there's a map over there. But I think for today I could walk you to your first class just in case.”

Freddy cut into the conversation , “Hey, I think he’s got it from here, D. I know you’re excited for him to have his first day at Fawcett, but let’s just give him a little room to breathe for now.”

As we made our way over to their lockers, Darla went with Mary and stopped at her locker first. I continued walking down the hall following Freddy’s lead as we made our way to his locker. He looked over at me with a hint of concern in his eye. I felt his gaze look me up and down quickly before taking a step closer. “Hey dude, you’re okay, right? I know this is a lot for one morning.”

I rubbed the bridge of my nose while I took a second to think. Doing the whole “new foster kid” thing at almost every school in West Philly didn’t really phase me, but I was pissed that I got reassigned to a group home on the other side of town. I knew getting caught was going to be a major setback and I still had a lot of work to do if I was gonna keep trying to find mom. Not to mention I already spent what little money I had on bus passes and subway tokens.

I look back at Freddy, “Yeah, I’m fine.” I let myself fall back onto the lockers to lean on them as we continue talking.

“Don’t worry. I know new faces, new school, new home. It’s a lot. I get it, but I genuinely think once you kinda get the feel for things around here you’re gonna fit in perfectly.”

“Everyone says that, Freddy.” I look off to the side, avoiding eye contact as he shoots me an abrupt look of confusion, tilting his head to one side as he furrowed his eyebrows, seemingly at a loss for words.

“Look. I don’t mean to be a dick but, I don’t plan on staying here for long. I'm sure you guys are lovely, but I already have a family. I already have a mom. They’re out there, looking for me. I know it.”

Freddy let out a small sigh. “Billy, look. I know this shit sucks, hard. Everyone in this house has done their fair share of running away too. We’ve all tried it at least once. But, you should at least give this place a chance.”

I lightly scoffed at the idea. “Yeah, well whatever, I guess.”

“Listen I know I can’t stop you if you’ve already got your mind set on looking for your mom. But, just between us, I would just try to settle down somewhere until you age out of the system so you can at least keep a roof over your head.” I could see his expression grow more concerned as he spoke. “I just don’t want you to run out of places you can fall back on.”

As I opened my mouth to reply, I was interrupted by the loud crash that was two upperclassmen barging down the hall. To my unfortunate surprise they slam open the locker door next to Freddy, nearly crushing his hand in the process. Freddy scoffed, annoyed as we saw them jam wads of crumpled papers into their lockers.

“Hey Freeman, you wanna keep your crutches to yourself bro?” One of the guys said as he pushed Freddy’s crutch with his shoe.

“Seriously man, how many peoples toes do you smash with that thing in a day?”

Freddy took a step back. “Dude, I was here first, and I was almost done anyways. What’s your problem?”

Both of the upperclassmen started to smirk at each other in amusement. “It was just a joke man, you don’t have to be so soft all the time.” Then he pushed Freddy backwards into me and I felt the weight of his body hit me like a bag of sand. I helped him regain his balance so he didn’t get the chance to fully hit the ground. But these douchebags were seriously just okay with doing this?

“Freddy, who the hell are these guys?” I whisper to him as I hear Mary shout in the distance. Slamming her locker and starting to yell at them as she stomps over.

Freddy says, “They’re the Bryers. Most annoying dudes in school.” He rolls his eyes. “They’re both technically in my grade but one of them is a super senior, so he should’ve already graduated by now.”

“Yeah, that guy who shoved you looks like he’s pushing thirty. He should probably worry more about figuring out his plans for retirement instead of being a dick.”

Freddy covers his mouth with his free hand as we both start to giggle to ourselves. Then as we regain our chill we start to tune back into Mary’s scolding. “And another thing, literally half the things you guys say aren’t even “jokes”. They’re just shallow insults you guys laugh after saying because you guys are assholes.”

Freddy seemed a little taken aback by Mary calling someone an asshole, especially since Darla was standing only a few feet away.

“You guys need to grow up. You’re not funny, no one here likes you, and you guys need to learn to keep your hands to yourself and leave people alone!”

I started to wince a bit at the scenario playing before me. I could tell that Mary was pissed, and that she meant every word she said. She was standing up for her brother, and I respect that. But, after every word the Bryers just smiled and giggled to each other more and more. They didn’t care about anything she was saying, they were just getting entertainment out of the fact that she was so mad her face was turning red.

They continued to take turns taunting. One of them jumped back into the conversation, “What are you gonna do about it Bromfield? Give me a lecture? Send me to my room? Mary please, you’re such a baby. Just because you like to boss people around all day and play pretend mom for your fake siblings doesn’t actually make you the boss of anyone. It just makes you look like a massive dork.”

Mary recoiled in disbelief. Any red in her cheeks that she lost catching her breath in the passing moments came back twofold.

I spoke up from behind Mary as she whipped her head around, almost seemingly like she forgot that Freddy and I were witnessing these boneheads too. “You guys are being total assholes for no reason.”

The brothers pushed Mary out of the way and walked over to me and Freddy. Their faces etched with both disgust and confusion. “ I don’t know who this guy is, but let’s get one thing straight. We weren’t being assholes, you guys are just babies. Do none of you guys know what a joke is or are you guys just soft or something?”

“At least I’m not soft in the head, like you two are.”

Freddy shot me an alarmed side eye as the brothers talked amongst each other. Under their breath I could hear one of them say. “Did you just call us stupid?” He said as he shoved me with annoyance.

“Get your gross-ass hands off of me!” I fired back as I shoved the younger brother into his older brother as a taste of his own medicine.

Then they both started to walk closer to me, their figures blocking out the lights in the hall as the smell of body odor and old milk started to creep into my nose. I took a step back to try and preserve my personal space.

“We’re not soft in the skull, dipshit. But you might be.” One of the brothers said as he grabbed my head and slammed it into the wall of lockers behind me.

A sharp jolt of pain shot through every inch of my skull as I grabbed the back of my head in sudden agony. I accidentally let out a small yelp as the feeling erupted through all my nerves. Overwhelming me before I could even process what just happened.

The loud crash of the lockers made everyone in the hall start to look in our direction.Their faces slightly blurred as a sudden wave of dizziness tuned out the shouts of the growing crowd. It was time to go. I ducked under one of the brothers arms and tried to make a break for the exit, only making it two steps before I was yanked backwards by the hood of my jacket.

I tried to squirm around to break free, trying to focus more on escaping than landing any hits, but I was hardly able to keep my feet on the ground. The younger brother put his arms underneath both of my armpits, locking me into place and forcing both of my arms out to the side. Leaving me in an extremely unfavorable position to win this fight.

The older of the two brothers started to roll up his sleeve as he stomped closer to me, winding up his fist to punch me as hard as he could. The faint sounds of Freddy and Mary shouting at them to stop faded into the distance as I saw his fist come hurtling towards me.

I had only seconds before I was either about to lose either some of my teeth or some of my breakfast. So I had to think fast. As the younger of the two brothers was still struggling to hold me still I reflexively ducked just in time to hear the *click* of his brother’s knuckles colliding full force into his jaw.

The feeling of the icy cold floor was an immediate taste of relief that I never thought I’d feel as I got up and started to make a run for it. The bell for first period rang throughout the halls as I saw a flock of adults running over to the Bryers. I escaped and made my way out the front two doors. As I sprinted out to the sidewalk I heard the Bryers burst out of the school’s front doors right behind me, cussing me out as they began to chase after me.

Not the best first day I’ve ever had, but definitely one of the most entertaining ones.

Lol I ended up tracing over my original Shazam design because I was mostly working on this drawing while I was at work, on my phone.

I had it a lot more purple at first but then changed it over to be more of a worn bronze color.

Powers of living lighting practice~ ⚡️✨

I was supposed to draw this with two light sources but I also got really into the look of the lighting symbol glow. Makes the whole vibe a lot more dramatic.

Anyways, this took me foreverrrrr just because I added to many little things to try and get the dramatic lighting right, which I normally don’t do. I normally don’t color this dark at all, and I normally just throw some basic cell shading on my art and call it a day lol.

But if you are interested in seeing this drawing with only a soft gradient and some cell shading I will post that below! :D

And if you guys have any ideas or suggestions for character interactions feel free to comment and I’ll see if I might be able to possibly draw some of them? Maybe? Possibly? Idk lol I’m very new to drawing character interactions so we’ll see how far I can push those boundaries within myself lol.

Rough sketch ideas for my version of the rock of eternity. ⚡️🐅🌴

I like to think of it as a floating island covered in old stone ruins and jungle foliage.

The thrones for the champions are near the center of the island. I still need to figure out where I would put the room of infinite doors? Maybe there is a secret entrance that you can open and travel down that is underground in the core of the island.

My plan is to kinda update the rock of eternity to have more to it than just being a cave. Like adding stone ruins and plant life all around gives it an ancient but magical vibe. ~✨

I think adding a jungle kinda rainforest vibe to the island is also good for adding Tawny into the story. Giving them a natural habitat to run around while they assist the wizard.

Also I think in my version of the story Tawny is kinda like the wizards right-hand pet.

They have a magical gemstone in their forehead that gives them them telepathy, so that they can talk to people.

They’re very educated in magic, and they have been assisting the wizard with magical deeds for hundreds of years.

Here is a new Shazam design for my version of the story!! ⚡️

My idea was to have the adult Shazam look a lot more like his child-counterpart. I think this will help both characters seem like the same person, with the same internal struggles. Because Shazam isn’t Shazam without Billy Batson, ya know?

That baggage from his past, and his struggles in the foster care system breeds empathy within the character, and I think that empathy is a good way to keep a hero motivated to do good.

I was thinking on how I was gonna write the connection Between Shazam and Billy. So far what I’ve been thinking is Billy’s internal struggle in the story is that he’s worried that he is unlovable and he will never find a place where he truly belongs. That’s kinda why he has so much urgency to find his birth mother, because he’s craving that support system he had for the first few years of his life…

These feelings of worry,shame,guilt and overall just kinda feeling like a burden accumulates within him over the years as he grows up in the system. Being passed on from house to house with pretty much all of the adults in his life stripping him of any personal autonomy he had. Like the adults in his life don’t really care about his wants, and they never listen to his concerns. They just keep passing him around his entire childhood.

That lack of stability, and that lack of autonomy really make him feel isolated and sad.

Billy is in distress that he pretty much has no say in where he lives, who’s in his life, or even the amount of personal items he gets to own. And he feels kinda helpless that his fate is kinda being locked in this cycle until he turns 18. Because every time he runs off, he gets caught. Then he’s back at square one.

Then this connects to Shazam because once he receives the wizard’s powers he becomes an adult. Then in that moment he realizes he does have a lot of power he never had before, both in the sense of flight and super strength, but more importantly the power to make his own decisions.

However, since he is a child he does kinda turn towards the more reckless side of things. Like how we see in the 2019 movie. Using his powers to ditch school, test his abilities, finding ways to get money, and then learning how to buy things he wants. He kinda leans heavy into these habits at first because he’s never been presented with an opportunity to make his own decisions before. He’s never really had the opportunity to do what he wants.

Then over the course of the story shows Billy starting to navigate all the freedom he’s been given. Watching him learn to use his powers for more selfless acts of heroism instead of only for his own self interests.

Having his background be one of a kid growing up with no control in his life, knowing those feelings of isolation and helplessness makes him more empathetic. He’s an “adult” that’s a lot more empathetic towards children and the less fortunate because he understands them.

He’s more willing to stop and listen to their concerns.

He’s more willing to help them solve their issues, because he is one of them.

Okay a new interesting addition to my current lineup, this is Samara Sommerly! 🌱📚

This is my modern version of an old Captain Marvel character that has not been updated since 1978 who used to be known as Cissy Summerly. (I’ve seen it spelled both ways? Summerly and Sommerly???)

In this version of the story she definitely takes a backseat to the main family and their connections with each other but I still thought she would be a fun addition to my story! :D

She’s kinda a side character, and kinda a love interest. She likes photography & scrapbooking. She also works at the Whiz Radio station on occasion since her family owns the company.

Here’s a picture of her from an old Captain Marvel comic. She looks a lot different from how I drew her, being a soft-spoken blonde in a dress. But hopefully these changes are for the better!!! :3

They’d still probably have a picnic though because that’s a cute idea. But I really do wanna focus on the family aspect of the story first and then eventually work on Samara. She could be a reoccurring side character until then. Buttt yeah ,,, that’s basically what I had planned. Okay byeee! 🌱💞

She’s such a sweet and loving mother figure to all her children and is a big believer in second chances. She’s got some pretty artsy hobbies and loves her husband Victor! :D

Also her dress? I have no idea if anything like that dress exists in real life, but I figured it would be a cute sweetheart cut neckline with a nude mesh for the long sleeves. Then the design on the skirt kinda is supposed to give a rose petal vibe to it. SooOo yeah! :D

I might have to give her another outfit because the overalls are cute, but all the other siblings are for sure giving like autumn/winter time cozy kinda outfits.

The overalls are cute but they’re more spring/summer time especially with the Philadelphia weather!! >_< 🩷

I think next I’ll either design Rosa and Victor or I’ll maybe work on some sibling interactions!! ⚡️🍁

It stands for Shazam: City of Brotherly Love. Because the story takes place in Philadelphia, and it's about found family like why would you NOT use that title. It’s lovely.

Ok so in my version of the story Mary and Billy are both 15. Mary is a few months older. Freddy is 17. And Darla is 13. I mostly just want to focus on these 4 characters since I think having 6 siblings is a lot,,, I think I can build a really good dynamic between these 4 and have them all get a good amount of development and interactions!!

We got Billy who is the main character obs. He’s gonna have a reserved personality at first and slowly slide more towards a friendly, bold, and impulsive personality. Especially once he gets comfortable with the other siblings. He can be reckless at times, especially when building off ideas with Freddy. However, he does have a strong moral compass that keeps him grounded.

Mary is his complete and total opposite. She’s a very anxious goody two shoes who tries to keep her siblings out of trouble. She gets overwhelmed easy, and relies on her siblings to bring her back to reality and calm her mind when needed.

Freddy is the most social sibling. In this version he’s kinda a grifter. Kinda like now in the nu52 when he was selling forged doctor notes to kids. He does things like that. But, he’s very extroverted and a lot of people know him for his colorful reputation. He loves being the oldest of the group using his influence both for fun and mischief.

And Darla is pretty much who she always is. The youngest, the sweetest, the one who expresses her love for her siblings the most. She’s very kind and she works hard to empathize with others. She’s the first to help misunderstandings and resolve other’s conflicts, especially when her siblings are fighting.

Right now I’ve just been experimenting with how I would write my own version of the Shazam origin stories and what modifications I could make to the character dynamics to make it my own. As of right now I deciding to change the sibling lineup a little bit to make Mary and Billy closer in age. I think that this would really emphasize both of their personalities, him being a bold, humorous trouble maker. And then her being a shy, wallflower kinda girl who tries to keep herself out of trouble.

This puts Freddy as the oldest sibling, which I’m not really sure how much I like that idea so far. Maybe he could kinda use his goofy nature to have a good older brother dynamic with the other kids. Idk I’m still working on it.
