The concept of Jim Kirk as science officer and Spock as captain cracks me up. There’s Spock trying to run a smooth logical operation and then there’s Jim “hold my beer” kirk in science running outlandish experiments just cause and driving Spock nuts.

The Once & Future Captain by Turtle_Goose
Mature
F/M; M/M
Jim/Leo; Spock/Nyota
34844 words; 8 chapters
The crew of the Enterprise is tasked with a classified mission to find a translation device that was developed by Hoshi Sato before her death. The mission takes the Enterprise to the mysterious Tarsus IV, a dead planet that once supported a thriving colony. Concerned about Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Riley’s alarming behavior, the crew delves into Kirk’s old life on Tarsus IV, uncovering the hidden horrors in the planet’s past and finally understanding their Captain in a way they’d never thought possible.
oooh, I have a prompt: Bones somehow learns that Jim was on Tarsus
It’s Pike who tells him.
Leonard has known Jim for over two years now and they’ve been inseparable ever since. He is a man of science, a doctor, he knows that nothing is promised in life. He has lost so much throughout his years - his father, his marriage, his daughter - but he has one certainty left.
It’s that Jim Kirk will be in his life one way or another.
Others must see it too, because one day Bones is called to Pike’s office, and Pike tells him.
“I know how important you are to Jim,” he tells him.
“I also know how important Jim is to you,” he tells him.
“That’s why I’ve decided to tell you something that Jim won’t tell you.”
And Pike tells him, “I’m only telling you so that you now, so that you understand him more.”
And Pike tells him, “You must never tell him you know.”
“What are you saying?” Bones asks, lips pressed together, heart beating fast against his rib cage.
“Jim was on Tarsus IV. Jim is a Tarsus Nine.”
Bones feels the world shattering around him, and yet when he opens his eyes again, breathless and cold, nothing has changed in the world apart from his perception of it.
That night, he doesn’t come back to his room.
He walks and walks, thinking so many thoughts at the same time that he can’t come up with anything, and his mind is like a storm and he’s in the eye of it, and everything around him is moving but he’s not really there.
Jim was on Tarsus IV. Jim is a Tarsus Nine.
It’s unfair, he wants to scream, it’s so wrong. Not Jim, not bright strong beautiful Jim.
And yet it makes sense, a terrible maddening sense. Jim’s fixation on food, the way he always makes sure everyone else is eating before he starts on his own plate, or how he has secret stashes of food, just in case, he says.
It explains the nightmares too, and the sleepless nights, and the heaviness in his eyes he gets sometimes, or how old he appears at times, drained and overcome.
That explains also Jim’s strength. Jim’s courage and unwavering sense of justice. His kindness, his softness also, hidden away under a carefree mask.
“I’m only telling you so that you know, so that you understand him more,” Pike told Bones and Bones understands Jim more than ever.
He also loves and respects him more than ever.
Bones comes back to their room as the sun rises.
“Where were you, man? I was worried sick. Oh, shit, are you okay? Fuck, what happened?”
Bones says nothing. He takes a step towards his friend - amazing and heroic - and puts his arms around him, and holds him tight.
“Bones?”
“I just need you to be here. Please.”
He can feel Jim nod, “Okay. I can do that.”
They won’t mention this again, but now Bones knows, and he understands.
I don’t have a specific Anxious Jim head canon (yet), but I was wondering if you could explain to me this common fanon idea about Jim’s anxiety with food? What is it based on? I’m not trying to argue, I’m just curious!!
For sure.
So we have confirmation that in The Original Series, Jim was on Tarsus IV. Tarsus IV was a colony settlement that was hit by a severe famine after their crops were blighted in 2246. The governor of the colony, Kodos, panicked and made the decision to save half the colony (around 4,000) by exterminating the other half in favor of survival for the “better” of the colonists, based purely on eugenics.
Staging a political coup and taking full control of the settlement, he made two lists: one list of who would be allowed to live, and another of those who would be sentenced to die. Gathering up the latter half, he delivered an address to the colonists:
“The revolution is successful. But survival depends on drastic measures. Your continued existence represents a threat to the well-being of society. Your lives mean slow death to the more valued members of the colony. Therefore, I have no alternative but to sentence you to death. Your execution is so ordered, signed Kodos, Governor of Tarsus IV.”
This event came to be known as “The Sacrifice”, and just over 4,000 people were put to death in one fell swoop.
Supplies and aid came sooner than anticipated. The Sacrifice was not necessary, but corrupt politics and eugenics had already taken their toll. Jim Kirk– as well as Kevin Riley– were survivors of the massacre. They are among 9 survivors that can positively identify Kodos the Executioner on sight.
We do not know which list Jim was one, but fanon suggests that Jim– a young teen at the time of the massacre– rounded up those he could find and did his best to take care of them. He called them “his kids”, and he put himself at risk to provide them with what little food and shelter he could.
The Alternate Original Series has made brief, fleeting mention of Tarsus in Into Darkness, and fanon has decided that as there are constants in every timeline, Jim was most likely on Tarsus then, as well.
As such, having been in a highly stressful and traumatizing situation for an undetermined amount of time, fighting for survival and denied adequate food and nutrition, it stands to reason that Jim has some food issues.
Let me know if you have any other questions! I’ll do my best to answer!
I love listening to music to get inspired. This has manifested itself into playlists for the main seven in TOS and AOS. I don't have playlists for specific ships just because I have so many so all the songs for all my ships for a certain character are an amalgamation of angst and fluff!
This is mainly for AOS btw, and I've only included the non-shipping ones that are included in my timeline. Let's go!
Run Boy Run | Woodkid- Tarsus IV, Jim was chosen, he ran away and collapsed in the arms of a Starfleet officer
San Francisco | Scott McKenzie- Jim exploring Starfleet Academy in his first week there
Mambo No.5 | Lou Bega- Jim having fun 😉
Golden | Harry Styles- This is the most shippy this is going to get, but only because this is in every timeline for all of my ships. It's Jim and Bones friendship during the academy years, how they're the only people that truly understand each other. But it's also Bones developing a crush on Jimmy boy, this also contains an "I'll patch you up after a bar fight but you're going to get flirty scolding too scene"
I Love to Boogie | T Rex- Just Jim and Bones drunk off their tits dancing once exams are over
Honky Cat | Elton John- I just need Jim getting ready for the day to this song, it's a great montage song
Let Us Adore You | Steven Universe the Movie- This just makes me think of the Admirals loving Jim when the 5 year mission starts because he's living up to his father, finally
Space Oddity | David Bowie- I imagine that Ambassador Spock left Spock a load of Old Earth pop culture things he found, one of them is this song. So he and Jim listen on the observation deck with the gravity off
Escapism | Steven Universe- This is inspires a scene in a fanfiction I'm currently drafting, so no spoilers 😉
And now some non-shippy Jim vibes!
Sexyback | Justin Timberlake- Do you need an explanation?
I'm Too Sexy | Right Said Fred- See above comment (also the video I put in was by Putnik68)
Cut to the Chase | Rush- Jim training, maybe anti gravity training or with new tech
Love Like You | Steven Universe- Self-esteem issues with Leonard and Spock but they all think this about themselves and the others
Other Friends | Steven Universe Movie- Mirror!Kirk, maybe he finds some of his officers have joined the resistance?
Here Comes a Thought | Steven Universe- Anxiety and feelings ☹
7 Rings | Ariana Grande- Just imagine the main 7 being sassy to this
Candyman | Christina Aguilera- Jim being sexy yet again, maybe some dancing too
Seaside Rendezvous | Queen- This song is a bop but full of crack, they probably just sing this after too much wine, or fruit cocktails for Spock
Strangers | Taemin- Just undercover spy vibes
What do you think of my choices? Do you have any songs that scream Jim? I hope you enjoyed listening to this, I'll probably do Spock next because, trust me, Bones has many many songs in his playlist!
Do you know of any fics that have the any of crew learning about Jim’s past like with Frank or tarsus IV?❤️
Hi! So I actually have a lot of answers to this question - Tarsus IV is my kryptonite.
So Wise We Grow
Spock and Kirk raise a child together. At one point, spock and the bridge crew find out about Kirk’s past child abuse at the hands of Frank
Sound as Stone
Kirk’s close friends figuring out his Tarsus connection
tomorrow is another day and you won't have to hide away, when the night fades away (run boy, run)
they teach Tarsus IV as a class in the Academy, and Kirk’s classmates find out. Pike helps him calm down.
Ingenious Idiot
Kirk’s crew finding out about Jim’s past though several brilliant stories
Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations
Kirk 619′s and bones is there to help him out after
Teaching Tarsus
Kirk’s professor finds him disrespectful and makes him teach a class on Tarsus without realizing that he’s a survivor
I think I might actually have more answers to this question, I just have to track them down. I’ll do a part two in a little bit.
If anyone else has any more fics that should be added to list list, please add them!

One of the Best Tarsus IV fics out there
I've been trying to remember what fandom this is from, maybe you can help me. I read some fics, and in them a character had grown up on some colonized/enslaved planet and there were a bunch of kids that got rescued from it, and he didn't like to let people know he was one of them. It was a m/m ship, and honestly that's all I remember. For some reason I thought it was Bones/Jim Kirk, but that's obvi not it because I know star trek. Help??
Hmm. Well, there are a lot of fics that deal with what happened on Tarsus IV. I can rec you stories that deal directly with it, deal with Jim's trauma from it, or mention it, but they're all Spock/Kirk. I hope that's okay!

In which shit goes down in no particular order: Jim almost starts a war, Spock gets tortured, Jim gets kidnapped, Jim gets tortured, Spock gets not-quite-kidnapped, Jim takes the Enterprise joyriding, and mysterious Vulcans with their even more mysterious leader hop a ride for a few weeks. But that’s not what the story’s about. It’s about this: Jim was always going to fall in love with Spock – boldly, recklessly. He just didn’t expect to stay that way. If he couldn't sit through an expert lecture, then he should give the lecture about Tarsus. That would teach him some respect.
What Sulu Sees by IsmayDeVain
How Kirk Slowly Endears Himself to His Crew by Becoming a Human Punching Bag, Plunging off a 300 Foot Cliff, Getting Crushed by a Giant Ass Pipe, Nearly Getting Blown to Itty Bitty Bits, and Suffocating Because of His Own Medically Inept Body. (Although, not necessarily in that order.) Or five times Kirk puts his crew before himself and one time they return the favor.
(this is post Star Trek 2009, but it includes flashbacks to the academy so I'm counting it.)
Shelter by schweinsty
Five times Jim told someone about Tarsus IV, and one time they already knew.
The World May Never Know by SadieYuki
How many lies does it take to get to the center of a Jim Kirk?
Or, five times Jim Kirk hid the truth from Leonard McCoy, and one time he finally opened up.
Cpt C. Pike and C/ J.T. Kirk’s guide to unexpected Co-Habitation by InsaneSociopath
When the Admiralty first delivered their ultimatum, Chris Pike didn't know who ought to be more offended; Jim Kirk, for being treated as if he were incapable of being independent despite being twenty-two and a certified genius; or Chris himself, for not getting any choice in who lived in his spare bed room for the next twelve months dammit!
Or: Things Captain Christopher Pike learns about both himself and Cadet James T Kirk during their (not so) brief period of (initially) forced co-habitation.
Leonard H. McCoy's Guide to Keeping a Friend by highschool-facelesshellion (mutalune)
Leonard came to Starfleet with nothing except a half-finished degree and an empty bottle of cheap booze. It took him months to realize he had a best friend waiting in the wings for him to get his act together.
Or: How Leonard made a best friend by being an unobservant but decent person and how his conscience wouldn't let him be undeserving of the kid's freak affection.
Quirks and Their Side Effects by highschool-facelesshellion (mutalune)
Jim Kirk's always been a weirdo.
Leonard could use some more weird.
The Little Things by summoner_yuna_of_besaid
Jim thinks about how he came to this moment: how he just happened to go and visit Bones when the man was with a patient diagnosed with ADHD who was looking to refill his medication. Funny, he thinks as more tears roll down his face and his lips tremble, how the most innocuous little things can change your life, forever.
...
In which Jim Kirk learns about himself and his mind, struggles to understand it, and his friends and family help him handle the fall out.
Any Road Will Take You There by shoreleave
Slow-developing K/M, beginning right after the shuttle ride and showing what happens the first year at the Academy. Told from McCoy's POV.

Starfleet Academy, home to carriers and mutants alike. Three years before Nero's attack on Vulcan, Jim Kirk and Leonard McCoy begin to forge what will one day be a legendary friendship. A series of snapshots of how it all began.
Throwaway one-shot. Jim Kirk survived Tarsus with more than just mental scars and how that could change the events in the second reboot film.
The three people who figured out that Jim was on Tarsus IV.
A fic based around the following prompt excerpt on Tumblr: “So, captain,” she began, eyeing him mischievously. “Where would you be if you hadn’t joined up?” Jim shrugged nonchalantly, pursing his lips for a moment in thought. “Dead probably,” he finally replied, lightly but absolutely serious– oblivious to the shocked expressions of his crew around him. “Or halfway to it in a bar in Iowa somewhere.” Or, Nyota's journey from first meeting Kirk, to loving Jim, through three, increasingly angsty, incidents spanning Academy Era to post 2009 film.
James T. Kirk always goes to Tarsus IV - because George Kirk can die, Vulcan can be destroyed, and Jim can be resurrected, but Tarsus IV is immutable. OR - An exploration of the fanon fact that Jim always experiences the massacre on Tarsus IV, no matter the universe.
Bones came to Starfleet with a hell of a lot of baggage. Jim came empty handed.
Jim would much rather deal with an army of assassins wielding pine nuts over having to weather the storm caused by this single video.
Jim is not exactly over Tarsus but he's over it enough to be casual about it, so times when Jim nonchalantly horrified someone by being casual about Tarsus
He's sitting stiffly, back straight and face utterly blank. There is no laughter twinkling in his eyes. She feels wary at the sight of him, this cadet who only superficially resembles the one she thought she knew. Starfleet Academy professor Anita Cornerstone calls Cadet Jim Kirk to her office to discuss his response on an essay assignment. The conversation they have is not the one she was expecting.
The kid takes him to the ground, hard and fast, and the knife punches right through his throat. The man gurgles and blood sprays, and the kid’s head snaps up, blond hair flying everywhere, as he gives the blade a final, savage, twist and pulls it free. He’d know those eyes anywhere. It’s Jim Kirk.
Based on the TOS episode Conscience of the King. Post Tarsus IV. Riley is assigned aboard the Enterprise. He recognizes Kirk.

The thing people always forget is that it was a Vulcan ship that reached Tarsus IV first.
Jimmy Kirk isn’t an old soul stuck in a young body, his teachers whisper, he’s sharp, jagged edges and a too-bright mind wrapped in skin and bones all glued together with his stepdaddy’s fists.
