Once again, it’s time for one of those posts that baby witches love to flock to in order to see what branches of witchcraft are out there that they can dive into. There’s no reason for me to make this post other than the fact I’ve always wanted to make one. In fact, sometimes I explicitly go into the tag just to see these sorts of posts for the nostalgia that they bring for when I discovered a witchcraft community on tumblr.
So for the baby witches out there looking to conduct their own research about the craft, here is another post you can look at to get a look at some notable branches of witchcraft. Just remember, there are numerous branches out there that are already established and that can be brought to light. So maybe if none of these sorts of branches call your interest, I would definitely suggest looking at your surroundings and the things you are drawn to and experimenting with them magically to see what correspondences they hold and using that for witchcraft.
If you find that popping popcorn helps you with spells, do it. Be the Popcorn Witch or Blacksmith Witch, you never thought possible. Just respect others crafts, research in depth what cultures are closed or semi-close or open, and have fun figuring your path out.
(Though keep in mind you don’t need to label yourself as a ‘type’ of witch, just do what feels right. Many witches, regardless of type, may use any method of casting their spells whether it be candles, crystals, or water they’ve collected so don’t feel that you need to limit yourself with your tools because of a path you may want to follow.)
This post includes small summaries about a small handful of particular paths, a handful of blogs in that path to check out, some 101 posts for those interested in a branch I mention, as well as some spells you may want to try out. So take your time and really look through a branch you may truly feel called towards.
Art Witch: A witch that uses art in their craft whether it be whether traditional or digital. They’ll utilize color correspondences, sigils, or what have you to get the job done in more visual spells. The medium the art witch chooses is irrelevant as long as it is art, this to me, can be interpretive to the individual. Personally I include writing as a form of art. So do with that, what you will! From what I’ve seen, some art witches will even have their sketchbooks act as a sort of grimoire or book of shadows. Bath Witch: A witch that will utilize herbs, flowers, essential oils in a different way that burning something into a candle– the bath. These witches make a second home out of their shower, using the magical correspondences of certain material to manifest particular outcomes into their lives. Showers are also part of this sort of magic for those who aren’t fans of sitting in their tub and prefer to stand. Bath Witchcraft Blog(s): (While I was unable to find witches that went under a ‘bath witch’ title here are some witches who have talked about bath magic a good deal) @themanicnami, @orriculum Bath Witchcraft Post(s): Bath Witchcraft 101, Bath Bomb Magic, Shower Magic, Bath Magic Notable Spell(s): Rose Bath Spell, Lucky Waters Bath Spell, Sea Foam Latte, Kickstart My Heart Bath Spell
Cosmic Witch: A witch that utilizes and draws upon the energy of celestial bodies, including our sun, various moons, stars, galaxies, nebulae, and comets. You name it, they do it. Some cosmic witches in particular consistently rely on specific celestial bodies, for instance Pluto or Jupiter and may coin themselves with more specific titles such as ‘Plutonian Witch’ or ‘Jovian Witch’, etc. Cosmic Witchcraft Blogs: @lunaesteria, @phaesphore Cosmic Witchcraft Post(s): Cosmic Witchcraft Masterpost, Cosmic Witchcraft 101, Types of Cosmic Witches Notable Spell(s): Jupiter Self Love Spell, Quasar Banishing Spell, Neptunian Clairvoyance Spell, Shooting Star Hex
Death Witch: A witch that works with death. This path can include helping the deceased move on, finding power and acceptance in the inevitability of death. Instead of finding death the end of one’s life it can represent the end of many things in our lives from friendship to certain opportunities. This path can also include vulture culture, though that varies from witch to witch. Chthonic deity worship is often followed in this practice. Divination Witch: A witch whose primary focus is divination. This doesn’t stop at just standard and mainstream divination such as tarot or pendulum. This can include any method in which a witch sees the possible futures around them. Divination can be done through many methods including throwing bones, birds, seashells, candle wax, leaves, clouds, and even pop culture methods. The possibilities are endless. Dream Witch: A witch that works with the subconscious mind and prepares their spells to influence their dreams. Their spells can revolve around sending messages, lucid dreaming, as well divination in order to divine any signs their dreams may be telling them. Dream journaling is recommended often to those who wish to practice this path as remembering your dreams is quite a big part of it. Eclectic Witch: A witch whose path is an accumulation of various branches of witchcraft and as such, each eclectic witch is different. For instance a witch whose path is a mixture of cosmic, green, and pop culture magic versus an eclectic witch who uses technology and occasionally tosses something into a jar and uses game cards for spells. There is no real way to find bloggers or spells of this branch as it is one that is your very own. My suggestion for those who feel they may lean into an eclectic path, try out various branches of witchcraft and continue on with whatever calls to you.
Faerie Witch: A witch that works closely with the fae. This can include working with particular Courts, using certain fae magic such as glamours, and leaving offerings for the fae to connect with them and express gratitude for any help they may have given you in a spell. This is a particularly difficult branch of witchcraft as you must be very knowledgeable about dealing with the fae, fae etiquette, and avoiding them. There is a discrepancy in what sort of spirits constitute as fae as far as merfolk and elves being included between practitioners, I suggest asking the mermaid and elf themselves if they consider themselves a fae as some may and some may not. Green Witch: A witch who works closely with the earth and uses herbs and flowers to manifest outcomes. There are other sub-branches of this path such as a Floral Witch and Garden Witch, but the spells are all the same. These are witches who are in tune with their plants and the nature around them. Though it may look like it, not every green witch is born with a green thumb and there are plenty who developed one over time. Be careful with plant identification and edible plants, it’s greatly recommended to either grow your own organic plants or just buy herbs if you wish to do spellwork that includes consuming herbs. Hedge Witch: A witch that works closely with spirits and “rides the hedge”, or as its often put, travels to liminal planes such as the astral. This is a path that is rather close to the green witch and traditional witch paths, often using herbs to help with meditation and hedge riding. This path requires patience as not everyone can freely and easily astral project or travel or hear the voices of non-physical entities. Kitchen Witch: A witch who uses their ingredients’ magical correspondences and cooks them to cast and manifest their spells. This can include the standard ingredients in their recipes or using additional herbs and spices for a kitchen witch spell. Should these witches celebrate the Sabbats, the harvest festivals are when they would shine. Kitchen Witch Blog(s): @kitchenwitchcraft. Kitchen Witchcraft Post(s): Taste Correspondences, Fruit Correspondences, Food Correspondences, Notable Spell(s): Grilled Cheese Spell, Luck and Love Bread Spell, Biscotti Heart Warming Spell, Spirit Soup, Prosperity Dutch Baby Spell
Love Witch: A witch whose magic focuses around love magic. This can include attracting love their way, self-love, platonic love, familial love, or even ending relationships. When it comes to this path, there is a general consensus against forcing one to love you or another person. If you’re going to practice love magic, focus on yourself or just raising the opportunity for you to meet someone you can start a romantic relationship with. Lunar Witch: A witch that follows a specific branch of witchcraft in correspondence to a moon and may typically practice spells at night. More often than not, our moon, but this includes the moons of other planets such as Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, etc. Each phase of the moon in particular will have their own correspondences and as such, it’s important to plan ahead in your spells and track the moon to perform the spell you would like. Pop Culture Witch: A witch who draws inspiration from tv shows, books, anime, and movies for their spells. A spell based off of the Screaming Rick meme? This can happen in pop culture witchcraft. A glamour that makes you feel as gorgeous as your favorite character in Sailor Moon? This is possible in this branch of witchcraft. It has even gone so far as for some pc witches to find pop culture deities to worship and find guidance from. Sea Witch: A witch who works with the ocean, drawing its energy and using its gifts to cast their magic. There are variants of the sea witch that work with water, but not directly with the sea (ex. ponds, lakes, rivers). Sea witches typically work closely with sea (and even lunar) deities and other spirits of the sea such as merfolk and faeries such as kelpies and selkies. Solar Witch: A witch, like the lunar witch, follows a specific branch of witchcraft in that they draw and utilize the energy of the sun for their spells. Typically, these witches cast their spells during the day when the sun is both present and at its strongest. Some solar witch activities include making sun water, sun tea, and charging stones. While the sun does not follow phases, there are different times of day best for certain magic and like how moon water takes the properties of the phase it was left out in, the same goes for sun water. For solar witches who wish to cast magic but its nighttime, they can draw energy from the stars as the sun is scientifically considered a star. Tea Witch: A witch whose craft surrounds preparing drinks such as tea into magical creations. Choosing teas based off correspondence and even incorporating stirring motions to grant magical aid alongside herbs, edible flowers, honey, sugar, etc. Iced, Hot, Lukewarm, it’s up to the witch on how they prepare their witchy brews. Tea Witch Blog(s): @orriculum Tea Witchcraft Post(s): Teas That Aid Divination, Herbal Tea Correspondences, Fruit Tea Correspondences, Normal Tea Correspondences, Stirring Magic Notable Spell(s): Lunar Rose Milk Tea Self-Love Spell, Thunder Focus Spell, Daytime Witch Tea
Tech Witch: A witch that, unlike most, prefers to use technology quite heavily in their craft beyond constellation and moon apps. These witches typically use their laptops, computers, and phones in their spell. They may keep their BoS/Grimoires as apps and even go as far as to using code for sigils and color magic, emoji spells, scrying via their blacked out phone or laptop screens, or use their own WiFi routers as the wards that protect their home. There unfortunately isn’t many resources for this branch of witchcraft as readily as some other paths. Weather Witch: A witch whose path is dictated by the weather as their spells resolve around it. From using storm water to give their spells an extra oomph or calling in a bigger chance for rain, these witches pay close attention to their weekly weather forecast. Some weather witches in particular will utilize and call upon particular weather patterns such as snow, rain, or storm and may label themselves as Snow Witches, Rain Witches, or Storm Witches specifically. One of the ways we might read court cards, as I discussed in the previous part of my Tarot 101 series, is to look at them as people. A pulled tarot card might represent yourself or someone in your life, or you might even choose to select a court card as a signifier to intentionally represent yourself or someone else in a reading. But how do you choose? We can personalize and analyze the qualities of each card to understand how a selected court card might represent one person or another, but one interesting way of attaching personality these cards that has been discussed is using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test.
By Jake Beech - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test (MBTI) is a “personality inventory” test used to make Carl Jung’s psychological research “understandable and useful” for people (Myers & Briggs Foundation). The test asks subjects to identify preferences based on the four dichotomies from Jung’s theories:
Favorite world - used to define Extraverted (E) or Introverted (I) personality types
Information - used to define Sensing (S) or Intuition (N) personality types
Decisions - used to define Thinking (T) or Feeling (F) personality types
Structure - used to define Judging (J) or Perceiving (P) personality types
When the result of each of these dichotomies is defined, a personality type is expressed in a four character “code” (Myers & Briggs Foundation).
(You can take the MBTI test here.)
There are sixteen possible MBTI personality types (you can learn more about each type from the Myers-Briggs Foundation here). There are also sixteen court cards in a standard tarot deck with four face cards in each suit. The personality types can be more broadly attached to suits overall. For instance, Wands and Cups are both intuitive (N) suits, but wands are thinking (T) while cups are feeling (F). Swords and Pentacles can be paired in the same way. Both Swords and Pentacles are sensing (S) suits, but Swords are thinking (T) while Pentacles are feeling (F) (TarotX).
Using the MBTI personality codes can help us understand the ways that the suits interact with in a deck and how the different court cards differ from one another. As an example, we can look at the Knight of Wands and the Knight of Cups. Both intuitive individuals, but the Knight of Wands takes more time to think logically while the Knight of Cups is more considerate of people’s feelings and emotionally driven consequences.
It is also useful for breaking down stereotypes that are often embedded in the court cards, such as masculine power over feminine individuals with the implication that the Kings are move valuable cards than the Queens. (Plot twist: they’re equally capable and powerful cards, they just operate differently.) All MBTI personality types are equally valuable, and the court cards are too. Knowing your own MBTI personality type (or other’s) can be useful for getting a deeper understanding of the way court cards function should you choose to read them as people. It can also help you select signifiers by selecting the card that matches your particular personality type or selecting a card with a personality type you’d like to embody. For instance, if you are INTJ (Queen of Wands), you may choose to signify that you want to be more extroverted by placing an ENTJ (King of Wands) card.
Understanding and using MBTI tests and types and understanding Jung’s theories (which have been used to develop modern understandings of tarot and shadow work) is one way that you can continue to deepen your readings and give yourself more resources for approaching readings beyond card keywords.

First thing I will say, that many might not like: Familiars in folklore are spirit beings. Not just any spirits, but ones that a witch has made a pact with for various other tasks usually in exchange for offerings, lending of power, a foothold to the physical world, and sometimes protection as well.
They were also in folklore inherited from other witches, given/assigned to a witch by a more powerful spirit being (most often Fae Royalty, Divine Beings including God, or the 'Devil'), or show up on their own offering assistance in times of need. However, they still perform the tasks and expect reciprocity.
Familiars can and do in folklore, leave. They are not permanently bound to the witch and so will leave if their the relationship is no longer beneficial. A witch could also have more than one Familiar in their lifetime or at a time.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
Familiars did not always look like animals, they also could be plants or humanoid. Some are said to be capable of shapeshifting or possessing living creatures with the help of their witch. Interestingly, in my research, I found more accounts of humanoid Familiars that could shapeshift or had some beastial traits (they also ranged in size) in early folklore than I did actual animal Familiars.
Also, in the literature, I encountered they were about 8/10 times referred to as ‘Familiar spirits’ instead of just Familiar. They are also often described as imps, fairies, or demons. However, they seem to be closer or more often related to Fae lore. * Which when you take away the Celtic cultural context from the classification of ‘Fae’ it is basically distinction-less meaning any liminal being not human or divine. *
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
“In the early 1970s, Jeffrey Russell noted that 'The small demons that became the witches' familiars of the later Middle Ages were originally dwarves, trolls, fairies, elves, kobolds, or the fertility spirits called Green men, any of whom could be either frightening or funny' and Keith Thomas claimed that the cunning man's fairy helper belongs 'to the same genre as the witch's familiar or the conjurer's demons?'
In 1971 Keith Thomas lamented that the English animal familiar was 'largely unaccounted for'.Despite such references to formality and fear, a large number of relationships between magical practitioner and familiar spirit were informal and intimate” (Wilby).
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
Tasks included but were not limited to spying, shapeshifting, attacking or protecting others, give knowledge, warn and aid in times of danger, help a witch develop abilities, and travel between worlds.
The most common offerings mentioned in folklore was blood, energy, and a stable foothold in our realm. However, modernly people offer what one would standardly offer a spirit. Things like milk, honey, incense, food items, and items work just fine.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
A Magickal Pet is a physical animal that lives with a witch, that said witch uses for magickal purposes, involves in ritual work, and/or feels spiritually connected to.
This connection really isn't uncommon in pet owners in general and you could involve any animal in magick, so what really makes a Magickal Pet? Well, it is the belief that the pet is interested in the witches craft. Most modern witches cite things like seeming interest in their altar or actions during ritual work, as well as divination forms like interrupting tarot sessions.
You can get a Magickal Pets the same way you get any pet. You don’t need to have these animals from a young age to have a deep connection with them.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
There is a bit of an ethical dilemma when it comes to using your pets in your craft. This is that using your pets energy, fur, etc. and involving them in rituals can open them up to the same dangers you face during all spell work.
This like overextending their energy, spell blow-back, and connecting them to the work can and do occur. There isn’t really a way that they can expressly consent so if you are going to involve them then PLEASE ward your fur, scale, or feather babies.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
This is when you ask yourself why you want a Familiar? Are you ready for one? What kind of Familiar do you think you can handle? As well as think up what your basic terms and negotiate terms are. This introspection period is often paired with meditation.
Plan your ritual. Time, place, tools, etc.? Take into account the weather of the day and be sure not to trespass. Maybe you want to make new portable wards or make/acquire a vessel, anchor, or conduit for the spirit (some spirits refuse to be bound to them and they are not mandatory).
Ward yourself and, if you use them, cast your circle. I recommend warding both your self and the space. Here is a pretty good wiki if anyone needs ideas or is confused: Wards
Lay out your offerings. Offerings can include food items, incense, burning herbs, etc. But if you are going to be doing this outside then I recommend non-toxic and biodegradable materials. Milk and honey are always an easy and safe bet.
Call to potential spirits. You can use the one below or make your own.
”Spirits of the forest, I pronounce my intentions to thee.
Come forth and seek me, and equal we will be.
Not master and servant, but familiar to familiar, to share our knowledge, our spirit, and our traits.”
Meditate and wait for a spirit to answer your call. This may take a bit and they may not show until you enter the astral plane, are sleeping, or at all. Just like in the show, spirits might not come to you right away and that's okay. However, if they don't come within about 3 days then you might want to try again.
If/When a spirit shows you then negotiate your terms. Tell them what you want and expect of a Familiar and allow them to say their terms. Get a feel of the spirit and judge whether they are the right choice. Be flexible, but also know the terms you will not move on. Many spirits will take a mile when you give them an inch.
The first spirit might not be your best choice and that’s okay, be careful not to bite off more than you can chew. For example, if you are a witchling or new to spirit work then you should probably respectfully decline powerful spirits like Aos si or mid-level demons (I don’t know how to express that better, sorry demonologists and workers).
Be realistic about what you can handle and try to avoid power/experience imbalances. * I personally have turned away spirits that I felt I was not ready for and there is no shame in it. * Don’t become disrespectful if a spirit decides to say no. They are sentient and often sapient beings that have the right to refuse.
Part of your negotiation may have included a vessel or anchor for them (you may make one and they refuse) and this would be the time for you to bind them to it.
Conduits are physical objects used to channel a spirit beings energy and a spirit may prefer that over an anchor/vessel. For example Sigils, the spirit might give you -or you can ask for- a sigil to represent them in ritual and for easy communication. Possibly bring a notebook and pen, just in case.
End your communication with the spirit, close your circle (if you use them), and cleanse yourself to avoid having parasitic or negative spirits attach to you. Gather your stuff as needed.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
Many modern witches equate these two things but unfortunately, a Magickal Pet simply isn’t capable of many of the things a Familiar is. They can’t consent and they rely on you for spiritual and magickal protection.
If it wasn’t for the tasks and capabilities then I would be completely fine with people applying the label to their pets. I have no problem with people involving pets in their craft and I think it is great that so many people feel so connected to their pets as it tells me they are well loved, and that’s always great to see.

Weather Magic
The term “weather magic” or “weather witching” has been used to mean anything from divination and forecasting of weather to actual control and manipulation of the weather itself. From calling up treacherous storms to destroy another’s crops or providing fair winds for those at sea, witches (and even those who do not consider themselves to be such) have always been involved with weather magic. When you consider that most forms of magic are based around an agricultural past, the ability to affect and predict the weather was considered an invaluable skill. After all, if your family’s livelihood depended on the success of your crops (or the ability to find water as it did in my family’s case), weather magic would be an extremely handy thing to know.
Why the url Storm Born Witch?
I am quite fortunate, as the gift for weather related magic comes easily to my family. For generations, the men in my family have been dowsers or water diviners. However, it wasn’t until after I displayed an aptitude to weather related magic that I was told about my family’s history with it.
My grandfather was the last water diviner in the family and he died when I was very young so I was never taught how to divine for water. My grandmother was the one to teach me what little she knew about weather magic - the rest either occurred naturally or I picked up along the way.
Whistling Up A Wind
This is the most common form of weather magic and has been practiced for hundreds of years. Depending on the pitch and tone of the whistle a witch can create a gentle breeze or a sharp gust of wind. Traditionally, if the skill of whistling up a wind does not come naturally to you the option of making a ‘wind whistle’ out of willow or alder wood is available.
Here in Australia, whistling up a wind is probably the most common form of magic I do. I honestly do not go a day without whistling up a cool breeze. It’s bloody hot here and sometimes a cool breeze is just what you need.
Storm Casting
Storm casting is the art of creating storms. There are many different methods to creating storms and bringing rain. The method used by my family is to fill a jug with water and while sitting outside (or facing a window) pour the water into a basin or bowl (I just use a wash basin I inherited from my mother - see below). Dip the tip of your pointer finger into the water and slowly make five clockwise circles in the water (if you have a pendant necklace this can be used instead - just above the water in the bowl).
As you are making the circles call the wind to bring in a storm by blowing (or whistling a continuous low note - the sound of wind over the mouth of a glass bottle) over the water in the basin.
Storm Catching
Storm catching or “reeling in a storm” is even more difficult than storm casting so it’s always wise to think before you cast. Too much energy put into a storm and it will go on for weeks (and cause some flooding - basement incident) or it will be extremely violent and knock down power lines and tree branches. Too little energy and all you will get is a 5 minute shower of rain.
The most common way to catch a storm is by binding it in string/rope or in a bottle. The storm can then be released from the bottle or string at a more opportune time by pulling out the cork or undoing the braid/knots.
