This is for all the witches who donât feel like they are doing enough. You donât need to enchant things, cast spells all the time, or write sigils everywhere to be doing witchy stuff! You are witching all over the place! You got witch everywhere!
Jewelry: this is the easiest witchy thing to do, in my opinion, because itâs so low energy. You can wear different crystals and minerals, seashells, pentacles, crosses, or other symbols pertaining to your beliefs. Pendants, bracelets, or rings are usually the most popular way. Whether you enchant them or not is up to you. Iâll set my bracelets and mala beads in full moonlight but I havenât gotten around to enchanting anything yet. I do wear certain gems to correspond to my needs. If you study palmistry, youâll know that wearing certain rings on certain fingers work with different energies. There is so much to this category.
Stirring anything: your food when cooking, the cereal in your bowl, your coffee/tea, the straw in your cocktail, the direction of your stirring is either conjuring up happiness and health (clockwise), or youâre banishing negativity (counterclockwise). Focus on your stirring and set some intentions for the day. Depending on your drink and if you chant a few words, it could turn into a spell đ
Tea Drinking: I love a hot tea in the evening. Some witches correspond different herb and flavors to their needs. Some like to drink kombucha throughout the day. Some make sun tea. There are so many ways you can direct your energy with tea. Not to mention teas helpful for divination, and tasseography (divination through tea leaf readings).
Aromatherapy: Whether with fresh flowers and herbs, incense, candles, or an essential oil diffuser, itâs not that hard to enjoy some daily aromatherapy. You will experience benefits that include reducing anxiety, easing depression, boosting energy levels, speeding up the healing process, eliminating headaches, boosting cognitive performance, inducing sleep, strengthening the immune system, reducing pain, improving digestion, or increasing circulation. To pair aromatherapy with your jewelry, you can get a pendant oil diffuser or a bracelet with some lava beads to hold some skin safe essential oils.
Walking barefoot: Earthing/Grounding connects you to the earthâs free flowing electrons. I am unable to do this because I live in the city and there is too much broken glasses and the danger of needles. But when I go camping, I definitely run around barefoot like I did growing up on the farm. Itâs so energizing!
Humming: âHumming combined with breath is a powerful way to release and let go of stuck energy and tension.  Great for clearing and refreshing your throat chakraâ It also improves your sinus health! Humming slows down your breathing rate significantly. Research shows, we normally breathe 15-17 times in a minute but with humming you can bring it down to 4-6 a minute which helps to slow down your heart rate and brings down your stress level. I like to hum when Iâm cooking, driving, and Iâll hum along to the music at work. I tend to just hum the base notes so they are long, in rhythm, and in harmony with the tune. Lots of witches will hum during circle casting or while in the kitchen to help raise the energies.
Anything involving nature: going on a walk, watering your plants, stopping to admire some flowers, hanging out with animals, watching the sunset/sunrise, stargazing, etc. are all witchy and connecting yourself to Mother Gaia and/or the Cosmos.
Listening to Music: Itâs part of the Quadrivial Arts, the Crossroads, the very core from which all paths of knowledge cross.
Working with numbers: Numbers and geometry are also part of the Quadrivial Arts, so whether you are an accountant, a cashier, or just doing your homework, you are doing some witchy stuff.
Your daily horoscope: Astrology is the fourth part of the Crossroads of the Quadrivial Arts. All four are the basis of the skeleton key to unlocking all spell craft. But checking in to your personal journey in the cosmos is a helpful guide along your journey through the universe.
Checking the weather: yes, itâs witchy. Knowing what is going on with the climate around you is an act of attunement to nature. And then you know how to coordinate your witchy outfit for the day.
So I discovered I can print stickers at home with my printer and my arts and crafts based self has absolutely been running wild.
I love making spell jars, and I love stickers, so my manic brain went âMAKE SPELL JARS BASED ON YOUR SIGILSâ and it has consumed my life for the past two weeks.
I think coming up with what I want to use in each jar has been the most fulfilling and fun thing. Iâm definitely learning much more about my herbs than I had before!
(And I swear Iâm gonna try to get to asks soon, tumblr has been a brat and not letting me answer anything, so screen-shotting and posting like that is gonna have to do D:)
âTrust your intuitionâ is a phrase we commonly see thrown around in witchy spaces, and in many cases itâs good advice. Part of practicing witchcraft (especially if your craft has a focus on divination or psychic abilities) is learning to trust in your intuitive promptings. In a lot of cases, going with your gut feeling is the right call. But not always.
Our intuition can be wrong, or can give us an incomplete picture of a situation. It can also sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between intuition and subconscious programming. The human brain is designed to find patterns. Because of this, it can sometimes be hard to tell if we are genuinely receiving a psychic prompting or just connecting dots that are actually unrelated.
There are a few common thought patterns that often get mistaken for intuitive messages by new and experienced witches alike. Itâs a good idea to read up on these and to keep them in mind when determining the validity of intuitive messages.
According to Rebecca Joy Stanborough, MFA, writing for Healthline, cognitive distortions are âthought patterns that cause people to view reality in inaccurate â usually negative â ways. In short, theyâre habitual errors in thinking.â
Like a computer error, cognitive distortions cause us to misinterpret information and draw incorrect conclusions. Cognitive distortions are common symptoms of mental illnesses [see below], but all of us experience them at some point, even if weâre 100% neurotypical. Research suggests that cognitive distortions may have evolved as a survival mechanism, and that theyâre usually tied to trauma or negative experiences.
This is way too big of a topic to cover in a single post, but here are a few common cognitive distortions to look out for:
Black and White Thinking (also called âAll or Nothing Thinkingâ): only thinking in extremes, framing every situation as either/or. (Example: âI have to do this ritual right or Iâm a failure as a witch.â)
Overgeneralization: applying a conclusion based on a single experience to a whole group of people or things. (Example: âPeople who cast curses and hexes are all evil.â)
Catastrophizing: assuming the worst in every situation; turning everyday worries into major catastrophes. (Example: âI didnât feel the gods during my ritual â the gods must have cut me off because theyâre angry with me.â)
Personalization: taking things personally when they have nothing to do with you. (Example: âMy friend cancelled our lunch plans for today â they must have decided they donât like me anymore.â)
Mind Reading: making assumptions about what other people are thinking or feeling, usually projecting your own feelings onto them. (Example: âMy partner is being quiet tonight â they must be angry with me.â) This cognitive distortion is especially important for witches to look out for, as it can be mistaken for empathy or claircognizance.
Mental Filtering: excluding positives and focusing only on negatives OR excluding negatives and focusing only on positives. (Example: You draw the Tower, the Sun, and Death in your tarot spread. You become fixated on the negative messages in the Tower and Death cards, ignoring the positivity and blessings heralded by the Sun.)
Labeling: reducing yourself, another person, a group of people, or a thing/activity to a single, one-word label. (Example: âIâm lazy.â)
I strongly encourage all witches to do research into cognitive distortions and learn to recognize them, especially if the nature of your magical practice has you leaning heavily on your intuition. A cognitive distortion is not an intuitive message â your intuition should be logical, and can often be fact-checked.
The prejudice Iâm talking about here isnât just the obvious kind, like blatant racism or homophobia. We all have prejudices, whether we realize it or not. Merriam-Webster defines prejudice as a âpreconceived judgment or opinionâ or âan adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge.â Prejudice simply means thinking we know what to expect from something, even if weâve never experienced it before.
You may have an image in your head of what ârealâ witchcraft looks like. You might feel like emoji spells, for example, arenât âreal magicâ because they seem silly, they donât take a lot of time and effort, thereâs no historical precedent for them, etc. etc. In short, you feel like they arenât âreal magicâ because they donât fit your idea of what magic looks like. This is an example of prejudice, and buying into that prejudice prevents you from having access to an easy, fun form of techno magic.
If you find yourself receiving an âintuitive messageâ that someone else is faking it, is lying about their spiritual experiences, or is only imagining those experiences, take a step back and seriously examine that thought and where it might be coming from. Itâs possible that the thought came not from your intuition, but instead from your own prejudices. It doesnât matter if the way someone practices magic or experiences spirituality is different from your path â itâs the right way for them, and thatâs what matters.
When you bring your prejudice into a tarot reading or other form of divination, you bring a set expectation for what the cards are going to tell you. The cards are going to pick up on that, and they may very well tell you what you want to hear â or you may twist the meaning of the cards to fit your expectations. This prevents you from getting clear, accurate readings.
I know itâs hard, but witchcraft requires us to leave our prejudice at the door. There is no âright wayâ to be a witch or to practice magic. There is no âright wayâ to communicate with the gods or the universe. Prejudice, biases, and expectations will only keep you from fully exploring your spirituality. Work on letting them go and opening up to the full spectrum of possibilities.
This one goes hand-in-hand with prejudice and is closely related to overgeneralization (a cognitive distortion). Stereotyping is a necessary coping mechanism that we use to simplify our social interactions â but it is also the root of serious social issues like racism and misogyny. We all use stereotypes without consciously thinking about it.
While itâs important to be aware of stereotyping in order to avoid contributing to social issues, itâs also important for witches to learn the difference between an intuitive hit and a stereotype. This is especially important for witches who use claircognizance, where information often comes in the form of âdownloadsâ that can sometimes be difficult to tell apart from our own thoughts.
For example, you might âjust knowâ or âhave a gut feelingâ that a man you know is gay. But if that man talks in a higher pitch, acts effeminately, and puts a lot of time and effort into his appearance, then your gut feeling may have less to do with intuition and more to do with applying stereotypes to your friend.
Many common mental illnesses, like depression and anxiety, can cause you to feel like you know that something bad is about to happen. âAnticipating disasterâ or feeling like something is going to go wrong, is one of the most common symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and other anxiety disorders. Hyperfixating on details and worrying over small things are also common symptoms of these and other mental disorders.
As a witch with two anxiety disorders, Iâve had to learn to tell the difference between my intuition and my anxiety. Hereâs a very recent, real life example: Last week, the entire staff at my workplace was tested for COVID-19. The results were expected to come back on my day off, and I found myself constantly watching my phone. Now, I do have some claircognizance, and when my phone goes off I usually know who the message is from before I even look at it. But on this day, every time my phone dinged I was just sure that it was my boss texting me to let me know that Iâd tested positive. After the first couple of âfalse alarms,â I realized that this was an anxiety thing, not an intuitive thing. I was anxious about the test results, so that was the first thing my mind went to every time. (For the record, when my results did come back, they were negative.)
If you have or suspect that you have a mental illness that affects your thoughts and emotions, I highly recommend seeking out a good therapist or counselor. A trained mental health professional can help you sort out your symptoms and learn to recognize them, so you can differentiate them from genuine psychic experiences. (Iâve personally had really good results with CBT and DBT.)
Journaling has also been really helpful for me, as it helps me keep things straight and allows me to go back and read over my experiences when Iâm having a better mental health day. (In my experience, itâs much easier to tell the difference between anxiety and intuition when youâre not in the moment.)

What is shadow work?
If I had to describe shadow work in one word, it would be introspection. Introspection is the examination of your own mental state and is necessary in order to learn more about your fundamental nature. Although it may sound off-putting and even scary at first, shadow work is a necessary component in the process of healing. We all have aspects of ourselves that weâve rejected and hidden away out of fear. Through shadow work, weâre able to reflect on our thoughts, emotions, and habits so that we can find the root cause of our suffering and heal ourselves. By reincorporating those aspects of ourselves that weâve denied, we feel more fulfilled and can begin to love ourselves fully.Â
Where does shadow work come from?Â
The concept of the shadow self comes from Carl Jung who believed that our shadow self is the subconscious aspect, or âdark sideâ, of our personality that our conscious ego doesnât identify with. However, I would like to clarify that âdarkâ does not imply or equate with bad. That which resides outside of our consciousness can be either good or bad, but arenât inherently reflective of our value or âgoodnessâ as a person.Â
Although these repressed aspects of ourselves can manifest negatively, it isnât because those parts of us are âbadâ, but that the process of repression is inherently painful and toxic. This is reflected by Jung when he states, âEveryone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individualâs conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.â He believed that until weâve merged our conscious and subconscious selves, that our conscious would be âthe slave of the autonomous shadowâ. This is due to the shadow self overwhelming our conscious selves by falling victim to our own self-imposed traps.Â
Through assimilating this shadow self, not over-identifying with it, Jung believed we go through the process of enantiodromia, thereby integrating the subconscious by reincorporating our shadow selves into our personality and allowing us to solidify ourselves through wholeness. He best described this by stating âassimilation of the shadow gives a man body, so to speak.â However, donât fall into the misconception that shadow work is a short-term practice. Shadow work is a continuous practice and integration of the shadow self is a will take place throughout your life.
How do I do shadow work?
In the last question, I identified that practicing self-reflection is a key component of shadow work, but what does that mean? What am I supposed to be reflecting on? Well, the first thing that you should focus on is being present throughout the day. Identify feelings that come up throughout the day and observe them objectively. What situation or interaction triggered these emotions? How did I react to those emotions? Were my emotions controlling me or was I in control of my emotions? Why did this situation or interaction cause me to feel this way? How did I cope with those feelings (self-harming, lashing out at others, communicating my feelings, journalling, etc.)? Did I punish myself for getting upset? If so, why?Â
There are numerous ways to reflect on your feelings and experiences in order to get a better understanding of yourself. Through evaluating how you react to situations, which situations upset you, and how you managed those feelings, youâre able to build the foundation to understanding your emotions and bridge the gap between your subconscious and conscious mind.
Once youâve done this, youâll find that the emotions you feel in the present are reflective of unhealed emotions from your past. Perhaps the reason you feel that youâre unable to set boundaries as an adult is because as a child, your parents never respected your boundaries by going through your phone or diary, yelling at you when you said no to a request, forcing you into situations that made you feel you had no choice.Â
By identifying the root cause of your emotional pain, youâre able to address it in the present and heal from the trauma. The simplest way that Iâve found to address them is through journalling. You can purchase a physical journal or even use your notes app, either way, youâre writing out your feelings and reflections to gain deeper insight. Itâs important to remember that this looks different for anyone and that the best way to approach shadow work is by doing what feels most natural! You can choose to stick to self-reflective journal prompts, vent about whatever is upsetting you, write letters to whoever has hurt you, etc. Ultimately, you can guide yourself based off of what you feel you need and where you are in your journey.
What parts of yourself do you find yourself rejecting the most? Many of us have experienced the pain of rejection in some aspects of our lives and sometimes, itâs incredibly painful and leaves us with long-lasting wounds. We end up going through our lives carrying baggage that we donât even know we have! Many times, Iâve found myself wondering why I felt so repulsed by aspects of myself and why I felt so strongly that they needed to be locked away forever. I couldnât allow myself or others to see my truest self, my whole self, out of fear. I was scared of being rejected, shamed, humiliated by the people around me. I was scared of hurting other people by being myself and of being hurt by others. Thatâs no way to live, is it? When we tell ourselves that aspects of ourselves arenât good enough, we end up going through life devaluing ourself. Weâve broken our own trust by rejecting ourselves, weâve told ourselves that we arenât good enough or worthy of love. In shadow work, youâre called to go inward and unpack everything that weâve kept hidden for years and sometimes even decades.Â
Bring the parts of yourself that youâve repressed to the surface and nourish them with love, allow yourself to see that ALL OF YOU is deserving of love and support. For you, that could mean unlearning your unhealthy beliefs about food or eating, allowing yourself to be emotional around the people you love (despite how much you were told that you were too emotional, a crybaby, too sensitive in the past), allowing yourself to relax without feeling guilty about not being productive because you recognize your needs (even though you feel your sense of worth is tied to being productive at the cost of your own health).
Common misconceptions about shadow work?
Shadow work is evil or bad, the shadow is evil or badÂ
The purpose of shadow work is healing through working with your subconscious to release repressed aspects of yourself and heal from painful, traumatic experiences. Your shadow side is simply your unconscious and to believe that itâs bad is to believe that you are bad. Itâs merely the part of yourself that you arenât aware of consciously and shouldnât be feared.Â
Certain emotions are âbadâ
When you let go of the idea that emotions are either good or bad, youâll allow yourself to just be and stop putting so much pressure on yourself to feel âgoodâ all of the time. Happiness isnât a constant state of being so stop expecting to be all of the time, we have a range of emotions for a reason so stop being ashamed of them. Your feelings are natural and if you feel like theyâre out of control and something to be ashamed of, there is nothing wrong with that! Itâs okay to feel like your emotions are controlling you because that isnât permanent. Your feelings arenât permanent and are completely manageable with proper guidance! The reason you feel like your emotions are controlling you is because you probably donât have the knowledge to cope with them in an effective and healthy way. Itâs helpful to sit with your emotions alone and look at them objectively without placing any judgement on them, this will help you calm down and assess your feelings. From there, you can identify what you need to relax and recover as well as acknowledge to yourself that your feelings are natural. When you stop categorizing your emotions as bad, theyâre no longer shameful to experience and therefore you can see with better clarity how to cope with them and move on.
Iâve already released it soâŚ
Why am I still upset?
Why does it still keep popping up in my head?
Why havenât I moved on?
Why am I not making progress?
With the rise of self development and spirituality, I find that more and more people are rushing to complete their healing. Healing is a continuous, life-long cycle and not a destination. Putting the pressure on yourself to reach the place of ultimate healing is not only toxic, but it impedes your ability to actually heal anything. Healing is about love, compassion, and patience and itâs not going to happen according to a timeline. Allow yourself the time to experience your emotions, see them objectively, forgive yourself and others and move on without the pressure of expectations.Â
Another reason that you could be experiencing this is that despite the work you think youâve done, it hasnât been sufficient. Iâve found that a lot of journal prompts provided online are surface level at best and can be more pacifying than revealing. If youâre not feeling anything while doing your inner work, youâre not doing it correctly. Ultimately, this is about uncovering what makes us UNCOMFORTABLE and moving through those feelings. When you allow yourself to experience the sadness, hurt, anger, and/or frustration than youâre telling yourself that these feelings are okay and donât need to be suppressed. The reality is that no matter what youâre feeling, you are allowed to experience those emotions and itâs only human! Unfortunately, many people associate lower vibrational emotions as bad, but this is a huge misconception! Telling yourself that anger, sadness, etc. are âbadâ implies that you shouldnât experience these emotions and that you have to get rid of them which is not only wrong, but unhealthy. There is no right or wrong emotions so donât buy into the belief that you should feel a certain way, simply allow yourself to be and youâll find that itâs much easier to navigate your emotions and needs. The only way to make it to the other side is by wading through the water, be patient and know that youâre feeling exactly what you should be. When you stop censoring yourself, youâll discover a newfound sense of freedom and wholeness.Â
If you find yourself circling back to certain topics, for example, your ex-boyfriend than perhaps there are triggers in your environment that remind you of the situation, you have more that needs to be addressed that you may not have been ready for or aware of previously (hence why shadow work is a practice that is ongoing), or theyâre representative of a deeper issue that youâre repressing. Whatever the cause is, the same methods as earlier will apply and can be discerned through your own intuition.Â
What are some basic journal prompts that I can do?
What feelings come up when you think of ____?
How did that experience make you feel emotionally? How did it make you feel about yourself? How did it make you feel about the other person or people?
Write a letter to yourself, your inner child, the people whoâve hurt you, and the people youâve hurt. Express how you feel honestly, without holding back and then forgive yourself and the other person.
If you could say anything to yourself or another person for closure, what would it be?
How have these situations and experiences impacted your mental health? How have they affected your belief system about yourself, other people, and the world?
What about yourself are you ashamed of? What about yourself are you embarrassed of? What about yourself makes you angry? What do you regret? Why do you feel this way about yourself and where do these feelings stem from?
What makes you feel most alone? What makes you feel most loved? How can you incorporate that knowledge into your life to make it better?
Whatâs the most hurtful thing someone has said or done to you? Why did it hurt you so much? How does it still affect you now? How can you heal from it and allow yourself to move on?
What do you need to forgive yourself for? What do you need to forgive others for?
Where do you feel you lack security in your life? Why? How does this impact your life and your relationships?
This is a list of generic prompts for you to start with, but feel free to message me if you need help with more specific topics or I can make another post altogether for journal prompts.

Raising a Ward đŻđżđ
Wards are essentially autonomous protective barriers and walls that witchâs place around their sacred spaces or homes. Just like real walls, Wards require upkeep and maintenance. Itâs advised that if you raise a Ward, then you need to regularly dissolve it for a little while to allow healthy energy flow in and out of your space. Please note, when putting up Wards, you are not only keeping things out, but youâre also keeping things trapped inside with you as well! This is why itâs best to dissolve Wards regularly.
White Candle in a Candle Holder
A Lighter or Matches
A Dish of Water
A Dish of Salt or Earth
Incense or Rosemary Herb Bundle in a Fire-Safe Dish or Cauldron
Starting at your threshold, light your candle and walk clockwise around your home holding onto the candle in its candleholder. Visualize your protective energy in the sore around your home, forming a barrier. As you walk, say: âI build this boundary with fire.â
Next, starting at the threshold again, walk around your home clockwise with the dish of water and sprinkle it all around you as you walk. Say, âI build this boundary with water,â as you go.
Next, walk around your home again but this time with the dish of salt or earth and sprinkle it around you as walk. Visualize the earthâs lush green energy and trees growing up to guard your home. Say, âI build this boundary with earth.â
Next, light your incense or herb bundle and take it with you either in a dish or to it cauldron. Then, walk around your home again holding the dish or cauldron, waft the smoke up and down as you walk, saying, âI build this boundary with air.â
Finally, return to your threshold and place your hands/palms on a wall of your home and visualize your home being enveloped in a protective energy and say, âFire, Water, Earth, and Air. Guard this home against all ill will and danger. Keep this house and all those who dwell in it safe from harm. I declare this ward to be raised and active. And so it is.â
Dissolving a Ward đżđđť
Starting at the threshold, walk counter-clockwise around your home with your right hand extended outward as if cutting away and dismissing the energy. Say: âI dissolve this ward. You have my thanks for your protection in the past, and I release you with my blessing,â as you walk.
When you return to your threshold and stand before it. Stamp your right foot and say firmly, âI dissolve this ward. And so it is.â
