Today is my 44th birthday. I was brought to my mother’s arms as Ronald Reagan was being sworn in and then went to the airport to welcome the Iranian hostages home—a meeting we now know was pre-arranged, as Reagan’s team negotiated to keep the hostages in captivity a little bit longer just so it could be Reagan, as opposed to Carter, who got the credit for releasing them.

Every four years my birthday falls on a US presidential inauguration. Some of those days are good; some are bad; some are terrible. Today is certainly one of the worst.

My birthday also sometimes falls on the day the US honors Martin Luther King, Jr.—or, when it doesn’t, always on a day very close to it. I always spend some time on my birthday thinking of him, too. Like all of us, he wasn’t perfect, but more and more what I think about regarding his legacy is how some of the things he said have been cherry-picked and stored like prize possessions in jeweled boxes for admiring every so often while the rest has been buried. MLK was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War, of income inequality, and of capitalism. Of all things I remember the first time I heard anything by him about that was in college when I happened into a record store in San Francisco and heard one of his speeches (not the “I have a dream” speech) remixed in a song.

Often you will hear that you should focus on what you can control. This is true, when it comes to your own personal well being—your state of mind. I feel like there should be a balance, though. Sometimes your well being is well enough that you can spare the anguish that comes with worrying about the state of the world—the many injustices you can’t fix, either by yourself or right away. We need that to push us to actually fix these things, either in small individual ways or collectively, through both direct and indirect action.

Each of us at different times in or lives—or on a micro level, at different times of the week or year—goes in and out of phases where we must focus on self-care and phases where we can look outward. Today I hope we can treat ourselves and each other with a little kindness when it comes to recognizing where it is we need to be in a given moment. Looking around on social media, it may seem that some are always on—always fighting, always pushing for change—and some are always off—cat memes, shipping, fandom. But that’s nothing but a small window into a person. First, that’s simply how that person interacts with one social media platform; it’s not their entire life. Second, it may be that this is the place they come to unwind—or, alternatively, this is the only place in their life where they can share the rage inside of them. Whoever they are, however they are, let them be, and offer them kindness. It’s going to take all of us to fight back.

when she saw someone shoot and kill one of his own guys and got so mad at him she stopped his heart so he would know what it felt like to die

When she woke up in the ambulance after getting the shit beat out of her by lady shiva and jumped out of the moving ambulance, crashed into a police car then went to go fight shiva again with like 4x the amount of injuries she had the first time (all while shirtless btw because her shirt got shredded when she threw herself at the police car)

When Steph died and she spent the entire rest of her run crashing out every 5 seconds (I can’t give all the examples rn but it’s basically just all the batgirl 2000 comics after no mans land)

when she got kicked into a barrel of illegal drugs then proceeded to hallucinate her friends and family saying mean things to her and also the devil and angel on her shoulders fighting, the devil one then she crashed out and beat up all the drug gang members then when nightwing showed up she kicked him through a window

when she decided that she had to fight the joker to prove herself as batgirl so broke him out of prison and when she couldn’t read his body language she called him boring then beat the shit out of him when he dropped his guard

There are way more than this btw, everyone in the batfam is a certified crash out but Cass isn’t recognised as much as she should be and that should be changed. Crashout Cain 2025 everyone!!

Anyway hope we get some epic new crash outs in batgirl 2024!!

I love this official comic, but what really gets me—aside from the fact that young Ivan is incredibly wild as always (damn, I love him and want to dissect his brain)—is that in this scene, I don’t even think Ivan is deliberately teasing or mocking Till. It feels like he’s just making an observation, but it comes across as brutally honest. After all, Ivan doesn’t really grasp social norms or emotions. He has to watch other kids to figure out how to act (or at least how he interprets things). So maybe Ivan was just saying something like, “I mean, yeah, you don’t have any friend, so by your definition, you’re a loser, right?” I guess for Ivan, it probably doesn’t even cross his mind that Till might feel any kind of affection for him, even just as a friend, right? But Ivan is so often wrong about Till’s emotions—Till actually cares about Ivan deeply. There’s this deep love-hate attachment there, but it’s still a deep attachment. Ivan just doesn’t understand that and assumes he’s unloved - Till don't love him - but that's not true. Similarly, Till doesn’t fully grasp the intense and deep affection and love Ivan has for him either. Naturally, that harsh observation hits Till hard. Till feels disappointed and hurt. Not necessarily because Ivan called him a “loser,” but more because... he’s not completely friendless. Ivan has been his friend forever—his first friend, i think. So of course, Till feels hurt and probably thinks, “But you’re my friend?? Why are you rejecting me again?”

And under the weight of his emotions, he impulsively hits Ivan before storming off. Ivan looks surprised, maybe confused, as if he doesn’t understand why Till reacted that way.

Really, they’re such a mess, and their miscommunication only makes everything worse.
