My headcannon for Chara is that they were a normal kid at first, but got messed up by humanity for their unusual eye color. They jumped down the pit in Mt. Ebott, where all that stuff happened.
We all know that, but here's what I think happened:
Chara was influenced by your actions. The neutral route, where you kill people, but not everyone, does nothing to them.
The Genocide route, where you kill everyone, convinces them that everything must be destroyed. Getting the satisfaction of killing someone makes them want to kill even more.
Because of your actions, they became a psychopath, bent on destruction of all of monsterkind.
Then there's the Pacifist route. Once again, Chara is influenced by your actions. They see the good in the world, and are convinced that it must be saved. That's why you never die when Asriel kills you. Chara has become determined. Even more than before. They don't let you give up. They don't let you die. They don't let you give up hope.
But then there's another path. Soulless Pacifist, which can be achieved after doing a Pacifist route after a Genocide route. And the end of the game we can see two things:
1. Chara in Frisk's bed. After Toriel leaves the pie, Chara turns and glares at the player with red eyes.
2. A photo of everyone with Chara. All of their faces are scribbled out with something red (pen? Marker? Crayon?.
These may hint that Chara remembers what you did, and is trying to scare you. They remember what you did. They remember. A bit of that crazy child is still in Frisk. Or it could be that Frisk is still influenced by Chara. Either way, Chara will not forget what you did. So it depends on your actions. Will you go Genocide and convince Chara that killing is the right way to go? Or will you do Pacifist, showing them the good in this world?
It doesn't matter. Chara doesn't choose. You do. Just like you determine the fate of the world.
Nvm I got myself a RB 1919
