Scarabia Finale
man whatever the opposite of artblock is, thats whats going on with me
another practice one-shot. This one is a pseudo-songfic because the song is presented in a diegetic format. The song in question is So Close by Jon McLaughlin, from the Disney reverse isekai movie Enchanted, the villain of which my version of Yuu is based on. Though in this story MC is kept entirely ambiguous so you can insert yourself/your own MC into it.
(Implied MC x Vil and MC x Idia too, all pairings are one-sided)
After Crowley finally finds a way to send Yuu back to their home world through the magic mirror, their friends decide to throw them a farewell party but one of the honorable guests isn’t too pleased with the idea of saying goodbye
Content Warnings: possible yandere behavior. It wasn’t my intention to write yan but because Malleus is already incredibly borderline yandere in canon some of it couldn’t be helped. so I’m just gonna say “Content Warnings: Malleus™”
Yuu’s farewell party was one party he never wished to attend—not because he didn’t want to see them off but because he didn’t want them to leave in the first place.
That’s why it was so heartbreaking for him to receive an invitation directly from their hands. Of course he understood they only wished to say a proper goodbye and not torment him with their departure but it surely felt like so. Perhaps he should just turn back, return to the dorm or even leave the college grounds altogether, seek an abandoned place far enough where he could engross himself in the details still visible on the dilapidated gargoyles. It would be better to not see them off and just be aware that they have returned home safely.
Oh but he couldn’t do that, could he?
Just picturing their downcast expression once they realized he wouldn’t come made him ache, and it would certainly perturb him enough that he wouldn’t be able to get anything out of his little escapade besides the deep void of his subconscious haunting him. He felt as if trapped inside an iron maiden, no matter how he moved he would still get his heart impaled, so he continued to make his way to Ramshackle Dorm.
The first thing Malleus registered with his sharp hearing was the loud music. If this was intended to be a celebration for Yuu they had certainly missed the mark, he can’t remember them ever being fond of loud and crowded places. Then he stopped. He didn’t know how many students were going to attend this—as Yuu put it—little soirée. He wasn’t well liked by most students, that much he was aware, he could very well ruin the party with his presence alone.
Another step and another pike of the iron maiden pierced his flesh.
Perhaps he shouldn’t enter just yet.
With a flick of his wrist he made himself invisible. For now it was best to perform some reconnaissance before entering the battlefield.
It was of no difficulty for a sorcerer such as him to see and listen as if he were inside the building. The first thing he registers is Yuu, looking as bright and cheerful as ever, dressed in a lovely attire they had no doubt crafted themselves. Oh how long he could spend just admiring every aspect about them; truly he was beyond foolish to think the fading details of an old gargoyle could even begin to compare.
As much as Yuu blinded him for a few seconds he could certainly not ignore the three loud buffoons that constantly flocked around them.
“Ehh—? You mean students back in your world have to clean the entire school after class every day? That sounds awful!”
“That sounds like a smart idea to maintain good student behavior, actually.” He heard the two Heartslabyul students discuss.
“I don’t see any purpose in going to a school without magic. It sounds so boring and you can’t even become a powerful Magician.”
“Grimm, there is no purpose in learning magic in a world where it doesn’t exist.” Malleus barely registered that Yuu had Grimm standing on their shoulders.
“So you must study for a career that doesn’t require magic.” Spade intervened “Will the classes you attended here even be of any use for a job in your world?”
Yuu’s expression turned sorrowful. “I don’t know yet. I didn’t know what path I wanted to follow before I came to Night Raven, and I’m even more uncertain now”
Trappola gave them a light slap on the back. “I’m sure someone like you is gonna figure that out pretty easily. Things tend to find you and not the other way around.”
It was so frustrating to see the three people closest to Yuu make no effort to keep them. So joyfully discussing their life in another world as if they were already gone. Malleus always felt a burning jealousy of the two Heartslabyul students and Grimm, they were the first people Yuu got to meet in the school and the ones they relied on the most; to say they were joined at the hip would be an understatement. He wondered if he had managed to show up to the entrance ceremony on time it would be him that Yuu shared such an inseparable bond with, him that Yuu would’ve depended on, if only he had made different decisions.
One move, and the spike pierces deeper.
Then he saw Schoenheit and Hunt approach the group, the former quickly pulling Yuu aside under the pretense of fixing their makeup as the latter stayed behind to hold back the loud trio.
“I can’t simply allow you to attend your own party looking disheveled.”
“I know, I know”
Schoenheit gently smoothed over their outfit in places and adjusted it in others, much like a fussy mother. Yuu giggled, and Malleus fumed.
“It’s a lovely design.”
“Thank you.”
“If you decided to stay I could turn you into my personal stylist. Your eye for detail is nothing to scoff at.”
“Thank you again, Vil, but I really can’t stay.”
“Why?”
They paused for a moment, eyebrows furrowing, before Schoenheit held them by the chin. They instinctively opened their mouth as he began applying his lipstick on them. The familiarity of such behavior had Malleus briefly numbing his senses in order to steel himself. When he brought his attention back to the pair they were already at the end of their conversation.
“I can’t force you,” He sighed. “but I trust your decision.”
“I’ll always be thankful for your mentorship, Vil.”
“I didn’t do you any favors, potato.”
He gave Yuu a small pat on the head but they seemingly decided it wasn’t enough because soon they pulled him in for a big hug, one he would complain had rumpled their outfits but still clearly appreciated.
Malleus didn’t know exactly when Yuu and Schoenheit had gotten closer to each other but he could warrant a guess it was around the VDC. Yuu always held themselves with a grace that had undoubtedly baited the attention of the Pomefiore dorm leader before the rest of their personality trapped him in. It wasn’t uncommon to see him doting and fussing over Yuu’s appearance as a flimsy excuse to get physically close to them and rumors about their relationship were quick to spread around the school.
Schoenheit made Malleus bitterly jealous in a way the other three buffoons didn’t: he posed a possible threat for being just as deeply in love with Yuu. Though unlike Malleus, his closed off behavior wasn’t born out of ignorance towards human feelings but out of a deliberate attempt to not express them. The man was like a cracked dam, desperately trying not to let an inkling of his real emotions seep through. He might have tried to talk them out of leaving Twisted Wonderland but he was still too quick to let them go. How weak. How foolish. He fancied himself in love with Yuu but still didn’t put much of a fight for them.
Yuu didn’t get to stay alone for long after Schoenheit left because soon they were hounded by the younger Shroud brother, eager to greet them with Yuu responding in equal enthusiasm.
Malleus shouldn’t have been surprised to see the older Shroud appear in person, after all if there was one thing that could make him leave his room it was the combined efforts of Yuu and his brother, the latter of whom he dismissed with the intention of having some privacy.
“S-so… it seems I’m going to lose a party member. I’ll have to find a new tank to fill your role.”
“I’m sure there’s plenty of tanks out there that can keep up with the rest of the team.”
“None as good as you.”
Ah, Shroud. If Schoenheit was a possible threat, he was a rampant one. Malleus had to fight back the urge to strike the man down with lighting every time he saw him.
It was no secret Malleus didn’t do well with technology; it never bothered him before until it got in the way of him enjoying his time with Yuu. He couldn’t call or text them, couldn’t enjoy their technological hobbies and most of all: couldn’t participate in their little online video game club. How many times he had tried to discuss with Yuu things they liked only to be held back by his inability to operate or understand technology?
But Shroud could. Shroud could offer them all the latest gadgets and games they wanted, talk about their shared hobbies and spend more time together. And if the twinkle in Yuu’s eyes whenever they talked about him wasn’t infuriating enough he had to find out Lilia, his own guardian, had also joined in. The only two people in this world that helped him not feel like an outsider, made him feel cared for and included, were now excluding him from their shared activities. Malleus tried but he simply couldn’t understand any of the things they discussed, it was always about their little online game that sometimes made them go an entire night without rest just to play together. It made Malleus furious beyond belief that Shroud could shake the entire foundation of his support system this easily, that he could offer something Yuu and Lilia found more appealing than him, than spending their time with him. It was unforgivable.
Malleus didn’t even notice he had numbed his senses again, the alternative he had originally planned now seeming far less painful than the experience of being proven how much Yuu didn’t need him and how soon they would abandon him forever.
He turned his attention back to Yuu and Shroud and was taken aback to find the man desperately clinging to their hands.
“Please, you don’t have to leave!”
“Idia…”
“A-are you so eager to go back to your friends in your world? You must have a ton of them don’t you?”
“I… don’t, actually.”
“Huh?”
“I have no friends back in my real world, I was too scared to make them before.”
“Then why…?”
“If I could make so many friends here that means I’ll be able to make a lot of them back home, won’t I?” Then they hugged Idia so tightly Malleus felt his stomach drop. “And that means you can make lots of friends without me here, too.”
Shroud seemed hesitant to return their hug, but did so eventually.
Malleus couldn’t watch this anymore. Why he had even decided to do so for this long was beyond him, though he couldn’t deny parts of it were enlightening to say the least. They had no plans or skills to secure a proper future, they couldn’t formulate a good enough reason as to why they had to return and they had no friends waiting for them. Pray tell why exactly were they so eager to leave?
Another flick of his wrist and he made himself visible at the center of the room, taking all the guests by surprise.
It wasn’t a large gathering, most students and dorm leaders he could recognize—not that he worried; he was far past the point of caring about ruining Yuu’s farewell with his presence.
All were silent as he slowly approached Yuu, heavy footsteps echoing through the room. He gave a disgusted look at Shroud rubbing his snot-covered face on his human until he stepped back, and suddenly Yuu’s attention was finally on Malleus.
“Tsunotaro!” Their look of surprise and clear adoration offered temporary relief to Malleus’ pained heart, who was still acutely aware of the previous men still surrounding Yuu’s vicinity. “I thought you wouldn’t come!”
Malleus bowed his head and extended his hand. “Will you please grant me the honor of this dance?”
They giggled. “This isn’t a ball, silly!”
“One dance is all I ask.”
They nodded, placing their hand on top of his. Pulling them back towards center of the foyer Malleus could see in the corner of his eyes them shooting Shroud an apologetic look, he only tugged their arm a bit more forcefully in response. Soft keys of a piano now replaced the pop music that previously played as he placed a heavy grip on their waist.
You’re in my arms, and all the world is gone
The music playing on for only two
He didn’t know who had started playing the music but he had a suspicion Lilia was somehow involved. It was of no importance now, as he began to sway alongside Yuu, reveling in how their soft gaze was now reserved for him and him alone, just as it should always be.
So close together
And when I’m with you, so close to feeling alive
“What took you so long?”
“I didn’t wish to ruin your party with my presence”
“Nonsense, you’re my honorable guest!”
A life goes by, romantic dreams will stop
So I bid mine goodbye and never knew
This was nice, it was as if only the two of them existed at that moment. He only wanted to forget, forget about all these other men, about how they were going to leave and only focus on this moment, even if they were going to leave and leave him alone and—
So close was waiting, waiting here with you
And now forever I know
“You have lovely footwork”
They beamed. “Thanks! Vil was quite the strict teacher, which is fair seeing as I almost broke all his toes.”
All that I wanted, to hold you so close
But he couldn’t. There they went bringing the other men up. It was not Schoenheit dancing with them, it was Malleus. Were they thinking of him as they danced, then? Malleus’ mind kept running, thinking of Yuu and Schoenheit, dancing this close together, over and over until Yuu learned the steps. How many lessons did it take? Malleus could have taught them, so why did they run to Schoenheit instead? Why do they keep running to others and not him?
So close to reaching that famous happy end
Almost believing this was not pretend
No! This was possibly his last moments with Yuu, he could not, would not allow others to sour it! But then again.. Malleus wouldn’t have been struggling this much if Yuu had spent more time with him. Didn’t they know how every second he was next to them felt divine? How much did he cherish their midnight walks together? But much like tonight, their days were filled with so many people hogging their attention and them giving it away so easily. It was so unnecessary, there was little others could offer that he couldn’t.
Now you’re beside me
And look how far we’ve come
And even then they were still picking their home world over their friends here, weren’t they? The world that offered them nothing, gave them nothing; a world that considered them nothing. It made him upset beyond words. Didn’t they know how much he needed them? The fact they clearly didn’t burn for him like he burned for them left him inconsolable.
So far we are, so close
“Don’t leave me” his voice never sounded more desperate
“Malleus?”
“Please.” He brushed his knuckles against their cheek “I am nothing without you”
They let out a huff. “Don’t be so dramatic. You’re still the great Malleus Draconia. You’re a big boy, you can take care of yourself.” So casual, as if talking to a child and not a fearsome sorcerer groveling at their feet. At this point he truly was no better than Shroud. “You’ll be able to take care of things when I’m gone. Yours was the only dorm with no overblot incident, after all.”
Oh how could I face the faceless days
If I should lose you now
Oh but he doesn’t want to ‘take care of things’. He doesn’t care about NRC or Diasomnia or Twisted Wonderland; the world is completely meaningless without Yuu in it. How cruel the gods must be to bring them into his life only to take it away. Was this supposed to be a lesson for him to learn?
We’re so close to reaching
That famous happy end
Having them this close was addicting, his heart palpitated and his lungs constricted, it was as if he was slowly losing his sanity to desperation. He never knew how miserable he was before they came into his life, never knew what he was missing. His boring, empty days were normalcy but now he didn’t know if he could ever go back; go back to being alone, being shunned and feared by all, being unwanted. The only person brave enough to extend him a hand was now bravely yanking it back so soon after he had a taste and left him wanting.
Almost believing
this was not pretend
Like a glutton at a buffet he wanted more; more of them, more of their kindness, more of their affection. Oh, how he hungered. One of the greatest sorcerers in the realm reduced to a man starved in the desert, and he craved for Yuu to feel the same. How dare they plant this disease in his heart and not suffer alongside him?
Let’s go on dreaming
For we know we are
So close… so close…
And still…
So far.
As the song drew to a close so did their dance. Malleus tightly held Yuu to his chest seeing as they might as well disappear if he were to let go. He basked in their warmth and the way they melded into each other, as if they were two halves of a whole long since separated. He felt them stir, trying to put distance between their bodies but still he didn’t allow them to go. No, they would stay here forever if he so willed it.
“Are you ready to go, Yuu-kun?”
And then Crowley came in.
His sudden arrival dragged Malleus out of his reverie long enough for Yuu to escape from his grasp, his arms subconsciously following after them like magnets.
No, no, no, please!
Don’t leave me!
“Yes, headmaster! Just please give me a second.”
Just one look at their back and he shattered.
Everything had turned so blurry in a matter of seconds, everything but Yuu. Malleus couldn’t fully grasp what he was feeling, it was them that always helped him sort out these new and complicated emotions, but he couldn’t reach out to them now—and he certainly wouldn’t be able to do so later. Despair began to rise up his throat like bile until he swore he could choke on it. He barely registered his scream of denial until Yuu turned around in concern, panic immediately settling on their face as they were stopped from reaching for him by Crowley’s grip on their wrist. The students that hadn’t already fled did so at the sight of Malleus clear overblotting. He couldn’t care anymore, his dragon instincts to hoard his treasure were louder than anything in the room. Lilia, Sebek, Silver, Crowley—none of them could hold him back him back anymore. Green flames surrounded his being until he was unrecognizable from his human form, his increase in size wrecking the foyer and threatening to drown those left under the debris. In his frenzy he couldn’t think of nothing but reaching for Yuu with his large talons until he had them in his grasp.
They were his.
They belonged to him, body and soul.
And Malleus wouldn’t let anyone else take his treasure away, least of all themselves.
