Her hand remains gripped around his, warm and firm, and he is close enough to see how her eyes almost appear cobalt in the electric light. The cheap bulbs of their apartment cast softer shadows across her severe features, gentling the full line of her mouth.
“No, he says, his voice softer than he’d intended. "They shouldn’t have.”
