my favorite films i watched for the first time in 2024 šš®āØ
Iāve seen people complain about the finale but I loved it. It felt so suitable to flash forward, I was so hoping for it to happen, otherwise the ending wouldnāt have been satisfying. After all friends promising not to lose touch, it was only fitting to see how that worked out.
Itās not a new concept to skip a few years in the story to show how a friend group fell apart. However, OMB did it well. The āfutureā felt realistic and we didnāt see too much of it, so that the interest for the next season would be high. That is good storytelling.
I hope they start off the next season two years later, and maybe show a few flashbacks. I assume something will bring the ex-friends together, and itād be cool to see their new dynamic especially since theyāre older.
Monse leaving Freeridge and moving on with new girlfriends was expected and isnāt necessarily bad as sheās also away from the streets now and sh*t that no teenager should go through. Although Monse was certainly the glue of the group which could be seen even in 1x01 (with Monse away Cesar left the group), so itās natural for everyone to stop being friends without her.
I think Jamal was looking for a place where he could release all his energy that he used to spent on conspiracies, and maybe after looking death in the eye in S3, playing football didnāt seem so scary anymore. Apparently, he even turned out to be actually good at it just like his dad.
I was surprised, yet very pleased, to see Ruby and Jasmine going strong after two years. Thank you! Thatās exactly what we need: healthy long-lasting relationships!
Oscar fulfilling his dream to have a family and leave the gang was probably the most wholesome ending. It was so satisfying to see him happy. And I hope he stays that way from now on. Please donāt hurt him.
At last, Cesar also had an expected conclusion to his journey. To put aside the sad reality of his life now (like it was easy before), if we solely judge from the entertainment value this choice is great, as weāll get to see Cesar as a leader and hopefully more mature.
TOP 5 FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM 2022āS QUEER AS FOLK
1. Mingusā performance to āsacrilegeā by yeah yeah yeahs
my first association when i read the title of this episode was this song, so i was immediately captured when it actually started playing. mingusā look during the performance was ethereal and mesmerizing. you could really feel the spiritual rebirth they and the audience were going through.
2. Brodie blowing up Daddiusā parentsā car to kimberly nicholeās cover of āhouse of the rising sunā
nothing more cathartic than getting revenge on your best friendās homophobic parents. brodie might be impulsive but itās admirable how much he cares and fights for his friends.
3. Brodie saving Mingusā life in Babylon
the most memorable shot during the babylon attack, which the show flashed back to a couple of times, was brodie body-slamming mingus after he sees the terrifying look on their face and realizes whatās happening.
4. Brodie and Ruthieās kiss in the rain
okay, so iām not saying i ship it. but their relationship plays as the main love story of the show.
sure, at first we donāt get anything but a āplatonic bestiesā vibe from them. yet, even in the beginning it feels like in ruthieās relationship with shar thereās always another person aka brodie. later when we find out brodie and ruthie were each otherās first love it all starts to make sense. brodie had to stuff his feelings for ruthie after she came out to him as trans, but he never really got over them.
i wonder what direction their relationship would go, were we to get a season 2. all obvious reasons tell me they wouldnāt last long, but who knows? sexuality is fluid.
5. Brendaās coming out
this coming out is pure camp and i live for it. it was as unexpected as my love for her, and yet completely in character. julian and brodieās reaction to āyou get it from your mamaā was priceless.
Iām like two months late with this wrap-up but here we go!
1.Ā Ā Ā Ā Genera+ion (2021) on HBO MAX
itās about a group of gen z kids exploring their identity and finding family amongst friends.
my favorite show ever! āgenera+ionā is the kind of story i dreamed of for years but never expected to actually get.Ā
āgenera+ionā went there and did that. multiple poc and queer characters! the different povs storytelling! the found family trope! teenagers talking and looking like teenagers! itās not overdramatized, thereās no unnecessary trauma dumping, and no sexualizing teenagers. it is refreshing, relatable, and authentic. this is the best show recipe for me.
it was unfairly canceled by hbo max, but I believe it still works as a stand alone story and is worth checking out. Ā
2.Ā Ā Ā Ā Daybreak (2019) on NETFLIX
itās a post-apocalyptic reality where all adults had turned into zombies and the teenagers are left to fend for themselves. the main character sets on a quest to find his girlfriend with the help of his sidekicks, while trying to avoid getting eaten.
itās a shame I overlooked this show when it first came out because it turned out to be a perfect fit for me. Iām usually not a fan of dystopian stories BUT this show has my favorite type of humor and way of storytelling. Iām talking breaking the fourth wall, insertion of animated scenes, absurdity and chaos all around.
I must admit, the main character wasnāt that compelling to me (perhaps thatās the reason why I didnāt pick up the show when it was premiering). same goes for his love interest. although I did like the unmasking of the manic pixie dream girl archetype. [slight spoilers] for most of the show the audience sees Sam and their relationship only from Joshās perspective. but Josh turns out to be an unreliable narrator, when Sam becomes an actual person instead of the idiolized version created in joshās head. I donāt think we get to see shows exposing their main male characters as āthe nice guyā very often, so thatās the part of their story arc that I liked. [spoilers over]
for the most part I was much more invested in the secondary characters (wesley, turbo, kj, eli & mona lisa are my favorite).Ā and I think the cast really is an ensemble, even though thereās a designated main character. other characters also get to exist on their own and even take over the narration.Ā Ā
i also much preferred the love story ivolving secondary characters. it came as a huge plot-twist surprise, and embodied some of my favorite tropes.
I watched this show twice and it goes on my all time favorites list for sure, along with genera+ion.
3.Ā Ā Ā Ā I know what you did last summer (2021) on AMAZON PRIME
if youāve seen the 1997 cult classic you already know the premise. a group of friends cover up a murder, and a year later start getting threats from an anonymous who claims to āknow what they did last summerā. however, apart from the familiar concept, the show is quite different from the movie, with a new setting and new characters.
most reviews iāve seen of this show were negative, but I LOVED IT. I donāt want to spoil anything, so Iāll just say that the plot twists,Ā and all the clues, and foreshadowings worked for me, and the finale gave me everything I wanted. it was so twisted and toxic and didnāt shy away from it, but it was also funny and entertaining. plus, Iām obsessed with the sapphic love storyline and the characters involved in it (almost as obsessed as theyāre with each other but Iām not that unhealthy).
I feel like I canāt rationally explain why I love this show so much, maybe the writers and I are just on the same wavelength. I think if youāre gen z and you like messy characters (and thrillers, duh) you have a higher chance of enjoying this series.
4.Ā Ā Ā Ā Young royals (2021) on NETFLIX
itās a series about a swedish prince struggling to balance the matters of the heart with the responsibility of the crown, after his parents sent him off to a boarding school.
this show manages to stay relatable and grounded even though weāre following a literal royal in a prestigious school. itās real, vulnerable, and cleverly written. and itās a beautiful heartbreaking love story. itās been compared to āskamā so if youāre a fan of it (and good television), this oneās for you.
5.Ā Ā Ā Ā Betty (2020) on HBO MAX
a remake of the 2018 movie skate kitchen. it follows a diverse group of young women navigating the predominantly male oriented world of skateboarding.
itās always great to see stories about strong female friendships, and this one also feels like a āfound familyā trope (which I love! and I mean, who doesnāt?). it feels very real as well, like weāre just watching peopleās lives without them being overdramatized. itās beautifully styled, and it makes you want to learn how to skate.
6.Ā Ā Ā Ā Cruel summer (2021) on FREEFORM, HULU & AMAZON PRIME
the action simultaneously takes place over 3 summers during the 90s. after it-girl kate mysteriously goes missing, another girl takes her place as the popular one, along with her friends and boyfriend. the narrative switches between two girls, while we try to uncover whoās telling the truth about what happened.
iāve seen people compare it to āpretty little liarsā. it doesnāt give me the same feeling, but I guess it does have similar themes. like, a popular girl disappears, only this one isnāt the embodiment of evil, thereās a teacher-student relationship but here itās not treated like something romantic or desirable, and the lying - which is a big part of both shows - but here the build-up actually pays off.
some of the acting and dialogue can be a bit awkward, but olivia holtās performance makes up for all of it. she carried this show. this is by far her best acting performance (with ācloak&daggerā being second).
7.Ā Ā Ā Ā The lying game (2011) on AMAZON PRIMEĀ
Emma finds out she has an identical twin sister Sutton, from whom she was separated at birth. Sutton asks Emma to take her place for a couple days to go look for their birth mother. However, things get messy when Emma discovers that Sutton has more secrets than she led on.
this might seem like an outlier on this list, being made over a decade ago and all. however, this is the third show with an āidentity theftā theme here, so itās very on brand for me.
as gen z, the only nostalgia I get is for the 2010s and back then I used to watch a ton of teen dramas that nobody cared about: āthe secret circleā, ātwistedā, āswitched at birthā, āmake it or break itā, ā10 things I hate about youā, etc. the only show that escaped my attention was āthe lying gameā. I decided to fix that.
I missed the vibe of those shows that I used to watch as a kid. if youāre like me, you will enjoy this. just donāt come in expecting great writing, thought-out storylines, or high-level production. itās full of missed opportunities, unanswered questions, cartoonish villains, and characters that come, disappear, and are never brought up again. (if anything, this show is like āpretty little liarsā!) but it also has entertaining love storyline(s), and a likeable cast of characters. not counting Sutton of course, sheās a disaster. I know this is based on a book, but I feel like the success of āthe vampire diariesā inspired the showās twin sisters. the actress looks like Nina Dobrev, and they went with the nice sister vs evil sister. only here the mean one is underdeveloped to the point of her being completely unsympathetic. she just becomes an annoying villain with no real motive.
beware! the show leaves off on a cliffhanger so donāt look forward to getting the mystery solved, just enjoy the ride of a 2011 teen messy drama.
8. Ā Ā Shadow & bone (2021) on NETFLIX
based on the worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, āshadow and boneā follows an orphan Alina Starkov in a fantasy world full of magic, darkness and danger.
not being a fantasy fan, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this. I donāt have anything negative to say. it seems like a great book adaptation. the level of production that went into this is incredible, the world-building and the characters are captivating. iām looking forward to season 2.
9. Ā Ā Chucky (2021) on SYFY
the continuation of the āchildās playā movie franchise. a Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, and thus begins a series of horrifying murders in the town of Hackensack.
this show turned a bit too cheesy and far-fetched for my taste by the end. but iāve been told that it kept the same tone from the movies (iāve never seen one, this was my first introduction to chucky), so that must be good for the original fans. overall, I still enjoyed it. itās gay, campy, and very disturbing. itās also always great to see teenagers playing teenagers. safe to say, iām never buying a vintage doll.
10. Ā Ā The girl in the woods (2021) on PEACOCK
Tasha and Nolan meet a mysterious girl who escaped from a colony that guards a secret door in the woods.
so, iām not into watching scary stuff, which you probably wouldnāt think looking at this list. but somehow, despite being very creepy, this show manages to feel warm and safe. most of it comes from the relationships between the three main characters. this series also has the best portrayal of a non-binary character that iāve ever seen. they get to explore their identity and face the issues that come with it, without it coming off as a trauma story. also, theyāre the best effing character.Ā
itās a cute short thriller. bonus point, it has Sofia Bryant from āI am not okay with itā.
Ā phew! this was fun! and hereāsĀ top 4 worst shows I watched last year: 1. bridgerton 2. ginny and georgia 3. one of us is lying 4. gossip girl (2021)
it just makes sense
1. eva = nora
both form a new friend group after theyāre rejected by their former friends (+ get out of a relationship)
2. noora = fatou
the closest friend of the first season main character. both fall in love with a mean popular kid.
3. isak = ismail
a character outside of the main girl friend group.
4. sana = ava
the bold, outspoken friend of the group, who used to be bullied, and is badly perceived by (some) audience.
this year was so good on new amazing series, and i watched a couple older ones that were on my list. letās get to it!
this show is so lush. modern humor and language is so perfectly incorporated here. i live for historical shows like this, that sort of break the boundaries of what's okay. and the soundtracks are top tier as well. but of course the main driving force is the main romance which couldn't be more perfect. i'm absolutely obsessed with them and always will be. definitely, one of my fav ships ever. unfortunately, it's the forth year in a row, when my favorite show gets cancelled after the first season. it's never fair, and "my lady jane" deserved to live on.
i thought it was so energetic and creative. maya and donald had perfect chemistry. i loved how the show took an existing story concept and turned it around, made it its own thing. a perfect action romcom imo.
when the show came out back in 2019, i watched the pilot and i KNEW, this was made for me. why did it take me 5 years to finally watch it? i don't know. but it's fantastic. it's just so unabashedly fun, bright and cooky, i'm obsessed. i get how it's not suited for a mainstream audience, and that's probably why it didn't take off. but it's very special to me.
quite campy, in the same vein as "now apocalypse", actually. it was certainly made for me, i'm an aquarius after all. the level of production and creativity is insane. this is a piece of art.
finally got around to this "comedy" that gives people anxiety. undoubtedly, it's one of the best shows airing now. a must-watch.
so this surely is a romance that will tear your heart apart. it reminded me of "normal people" and "lovesick" (which i whole-heartedly recommend). "one day" is so beautiful, the way it depicts time is genuine and real. the performances of leo and ambika are outstanding.
this show surprised me by how it drew me in. i found the story riveting, and the characters very authentic. i especially enjoyed the styling of the characters, the main girls had such well thought out unique styles that fit their personalities.
it's time for guilty pleasures. i mean, it's a really well-made show, nothing to be ashamed about. but it's just so messy and sinister in away, that at first i could't really say i loved it. but when season 2 premiered and i found myself clinging on to each episode, i knew i was in for it.
this has the aesthetics of "call me by your name" and the feeling of a perfect summer day. beautiful and vulnerable.
they are a force. this is both hilarious, dramatic and extremely inspiring. i could listen to "voldemort under my headscarf" all day.
honorable mentions go to the shows that i continued to watch this year: good trouble S5 - so i finished my favorite show ever thatās been with me for 5 years, iām so happy it exists and iām gonna miss it forever, i think everyone should watch it, itās worth it. shrinking s2 - obsessed with the vibes & extremely attached to this little friend-family. heartstopper s3 - still the most warm and kind series ever, only more mature now, and i love it. that 90s show s2&3 - so comforting to me, so sad it got cancelled. chucky s3 - camp itself has ended this year, i'm gonna miss this world. heartbreak high s2 - best teen show on tv rn, letās be real, the energy is unmatched, i hope the final season will exceed my expectations. young royals s3 - i donāt think season 1 could ever be topped, but it was a satisfying conclusion to a beautiful show.
ranking hsmtmts characters bc iāve got nothing more important to do
14. lily
sheās just plain annoying and i want her to get off my screen every time sheās on it.
hope sheās not in season three and if she is sheās not redeemed (make her even more evil, then maybe sheāll be interesting).
[this is just about the character of course, nothing against the actress]
13. miss jen
i was finally starting to like her in the beginning of season 2 but the last few episodes reminded me how infuriating she is. i donāt like how she treats her students and the fact that she doesnāt have teaching credentials doesnāt help.
12. ricky
itās not that i hate him i actually like him sometimes, but heās so oblivious and gullible. give this boy some therapy then maybe weāll talk.
11. nini
sheās alright. but we see so much of her and yet so little of the important stuff that would actually make her interesting. i support and respect her and all, i just donāt really care about her.
10. natalie
hello whereās her screen time? episodes 10&11 proved she deserves it.
9. big red
heās just kinda there. i like the actor but iām not that invested in the characterās storyline.
8. carlos
respect him a lot. but the show doesnāt give him enough plot line for me to care.
7. seb
love him bc heās a sweetheart but him and carlos are in the same boat (or should i say ship) when it comes to screen time. the show remembers they exist once every 5 episodes, so theyāre just kinda there in the background.
6. howie
heās so high up bc he intrigues me. iām certain that heās a good guy but i guess the finale will settle it for me.
5. kourtney
iām glad that this season sheās not just a supportive black friend and gets her own storyline. although i wish weād seen more of her at work & pursuing her dreams instead of only witnessing the howie drama (and even that mostly in the background).
4. ashlyn
ash was consistently great from the beginning. love her bond with gina and need more of it.
in some ways she reminds me of phoebe from friends because sheās a multitasking queen and apparently likes to stir up drama (bc wth was that deal with the chocolates).
3. mr mazzara
even though he was sort of an antagonist in season one (for like 4 episodes) and he said a few nasty things, since his first scene, i liked his presence and comedic timing. in season two he completely won me over. heās just someone who can do no wrong at this point. and his relationship with ej is amazing. so yes heās in the top 3.
2. ej
ej couldāve be an unlikable character but matt cornett is portraying him so well itās impossible not to like him. he was definitely one of the most surprising character development wise. although he was my second favorite since day one, regardless. his story arc was one of the best. he is the best male character. now, iām kinda scared to lose him next season. and also, portwell for life <3
1. gina
do i even have to say it? sheās a queen and everyone should bow down to her. shouldāve been the main character idc.
sofia wylie was the reason i started the show and gina became my number one the second i saw her in the background. finally this season has been giving her all the screen time she deserves and i couldnāt be happier. gina is one of my all time favorite comfort characters.
two episodes in
im so here for otis & ruby, the relationship makes both characters more interesting and less unbearable, plus they are so much better than maeve & otis, i can actually ship them.
i love cal. i want to see more of them. it was heartbreaking to see the bathrooms aka their safe space being demolished.
since season one adam has been my favorite character (after maeve), and iām so happy to see his development. he makes me go š„ŗ every time heās on screen.
eric and adam are so cute. i really hope they work out.
iām glad isaac told maeve the truth, and while i like isaac i donāt think maeve will be with him. i donāt think maeve needs a love interest this season tbh.
i hope we get an aimee centered episode.
episode 3
sorry viv and jackson, i used to really ship you last season but now iām cal and jackson all the way
viv is kinda annoying this season so far. itās in character but like she used to be one of my favorites
i want to fight hope
why do i love ruby now
episode 4
okay i do like otis and ruby but why did this turn into their show? i want to see other characters more!!!
i canāt wait to see hopeās downfall. istg if sheās not gone by the end of the season i will riot.
iām really liking maeve with isaac. their scene was so sensual and beautiful.
i just really hope otis and maeve both move on separately like theyāre doing rn, and never get together. i donāt think theyāre right for each other, and theyāre just boring together.
ready for paris adventures yessss
episode 5
jean is a queen
jackson on a trip is hilarious
flying feces whyyy
i love adam sm
oh no the girls are fighting
not ola and lilly having a fight over aliens
oh no donāt tell me maeve and otis are gonna find some motel and there will only be one bed
iām living for adam and rahim becoming buddies
jackson and cal š
maeveās not here? kevinās not here. KEVIN!
you tell him, maeve. otis sucked last season.
nononono. NOOO. disgusting. donāt kiss. stupid paris.
poor ruby š
episode 6
lilly backstory yesssss
vagina cupcakes I WANT
why is aimee the sweetest human being
i wonder if the season will end with maeve going away to the us
iām so glad weāre seeing more of ericās family
hope can die in a ditch. she would be a terrible parent considering how she treats her students. *me imagining violently smashing hopeās car to cope* who made this bitch an educator? is this allowed? IS THAT ALLOWED?! poor kids, theyāre legit traumatized now
iām sorry but with this crisis going on, i canāt care about some silly maeve and otis drama
otis DOES make everything worse. fuck otis. i donāt want to see him anymore either.
hell yeah viv. fuck that millennial bitch up.
no, eric, donāt just go away with some stranger. iām scared.
why is everyone fucking cheating?! is it so hard to keep your tongue in your mouth?
episode 7
ahhh i love everyone working together
omg this bitch is absolutely unhinged
āsex free campus? people fuck in the bushesā is my favorite quote, thank you eric
ruby matthews is officially THAT bitch, she did what i wanted to do the whole season
sucking on my titties is the best anthem. i love this show.
cal and jackson are definitely my favorite ship this season, i really hope they work everything out
the way connor swindells portrays adam is incredible
i need jean to be okay
theyāre each otherās mums stop iām crying
i wish mr groff cared more about his son than about getting back with his wife, like he hasnāt even talked to adam this whole time or made any sort of effort
lmao not A RAIN KISS i canāt believe a ship i donāt care about actually get a rain kiss
the finale episode 8 letās gooooo
lmao what is this mean girls moment
adam and rahim being besties is hilarious
iām sad cal and jackson didnāt work out but i get it, iām glad theyāll still be friends
the maureen and aimee goat adventures
my baby adam iām- i canāt, why is he getting hurt
why did adam and eric have to break up
not otis building up this absolute bitch that should be in jail
SHUT UP heās not the father?!
seeing adam happy is everything
proud of maureen for ditching michael
eric third wheeling in the tree house lmao
i feel like this season left everything disheveled, and iām left feeling empty. it felt more like a mid season finale than a season finale. i enjoyed season 3 but i think i prefer season 2.
shows to watch if you loved IANOWT
Desperately need another season of I Am Not Okay with This? Hereās 5 shows to enjoy while you wait for season 2 announcement!
1. The End of the F***ing World
Okay, itās an obvious one, given that itās the same creators behind both shows. Itās even been stated that both stories take place in the same universe. Nonetheless, if you havenāt seen TEOTFW yet, what are you waiting for? Thereāre a lot of resemblances between characters, many parallels, and the show overall gives off a very familiar vibe. Relatable angsty teenagers, love, friendship, blood and crime. The only thing missing is perhaps superpowers.
2. Sex education
This show can totally fill the void in your heart left by ianowt. Sex education is an homage to John Hughesā films. Thatās why just like with ianowt at first youāre not sure whether the show is set in modern times or in the 80s. You can expect to see a lot of bright clothing, high school clichĆ©s, beautiful friendships, well rounded characters. Besides, the show has amazing lgbtq+ representation, well written poc characters, actual female empowerment. This show is definitely everything our generation needs. Not to mention, it is hilarious.
3. Everything sucks
This show unfortunately wonāt entertain you for long as it was canceled after one season. However, if you want to watch a wlw relationship, this oneās for you. Itās a coming of age show, set in the 90s, about nerds and theatre kids coming together, and trying to figure out themselves and their place in the world.
4. Freaks and Geeks
Well, this is an underrated classic about outcasts in the 80s, that was also unfairly canceled after one season run. The plot is right there in the title. You follow the lives of Sam and his geeky friends, and his older sister Lindsay whoās trying to fit in with cool misfits. Ultimately, itās a story about growing up (shocker), battling social norms and searching for your identity.
5. Stranger Things
With the same people producing both shows itās no wonder they get compared. Stranger things has the same throwback aesthetic, although that might have something to do with the fact ST is actually set in the 80s. And even though scenery is what can attract ianowt audience to this show, the most evident similarity would have to be the girl with super powers. So if you liked ianowt for the supernatural aspect, stranger things has to be first on your watch list.
what I did like
This movie was very refreshing because it didnāt have the same cheesy glossy Netflix vibe. We all remember such āmasterpiecesā as Tall Girl and The Kissing Booth, and itās nice to see that The Half of It was actually a genuine story.
I really liked the way Ellieās culture and her family was represented in the movie. We donāt usually see families whose first language isnāt English having conversations in their native language on screen, even though itās unrealistic. And here it wasnāt even a big deal, it just came naturally.
The meaning behind the title and the story was beautiful. In the last scene when Ellie observes other passengers on the train who are sitting alone, the realization hits that all people are a half of somebodyās story. In friendships, romantic and family relationships thereāre always two halves, two people who make them up. People arenāt perfect, you canāt just meet someone who will fit you. Relationships blossom from the work that both people put in. [āLove, itās not finding your perfect half. Itās the trying, and reaching, and falling.ā]
Also having an Asian lead and lesbian representation in a mainstream movie was pretty great.
things that werenāt that great
The whole movie felt authentic but at the same time I was left with a lot of questions. Maybe the things I found problems with are nitpicks or they were meant to be that way. And honestly I might have not even noticed them, if only the movie hadnāt left me unfulfilled. You see, once I finished it, I understood that it was lacking something to make a long-lasting impression. Thatās what made me go back and think about what didnāt work for me in the movie.
It was hard to understand the school dynamics. The world of the movie felt limited. And people who were on the outside of Ellieās life ā faceless. With such a tiny world, that revolved around three main characters, the football games and talent shows felt out of place because the school life wasnāt established well. I didnāt understand why those guys bullied Ellie and sabotaged her performance. Just to be mean and because they were racist I guess, but they were so absent from the story, that it felt like a plot device and nothing more. Who were those two blonde ladies Ellie kept looking at during the talent show and in church? Just some random judging women? Did I miss something? All these questions just put me out of the story and left me puzzled.
The characters were closed books as well. I didnāt feel connected to any of them.
Asterās presented like a ādream girlā type of character that we see through Ellieās eyes. Her boredom and struggle to choose between what she should do and actually wants were mentioned but her emotions and thoughts were still an enigma. Besides, she was cheating on her boyfriend with Paul and everyone was okay with that? Itās not even addressed in the movie.
Ellie was not relatable for me because, again, we didnāt see much of her feelings. If the movie is already including a voice over, why not use it to help the audience understand the main character better? We only see what sheās going through, but we donāt see how.
While Ellie didnāt seem to play an active part in her own life, it was Paul who was moving the story forward. Usually, I enjoy a good-hearted dense jock, but not here. Trying to kiss Ellie even though he was still with Aster, and then not even caring that Aster saw them but instead saying that Ellieās gonna end up in hell for being gay (and never apologizing for it). Where did the homophobia come from? The fact that he was religious wasnāt that focused on to expect this turn of events. Just as well, it was hard to figure out what was happening inside his head. His character just like everyone elseās felt flat.
Probably the worst scene of the movie happened in the said church. With twenty minutes left, the movie, that so cautiously avoided and reinvented romcom clichĆ©s up to this point,ļæ¼ suddenly slips into an unrealistic and awkward speech in front of everybody (everybody being the characters that werenāt well developed nor established, so for us theyāre just nobody). Can we please stop making the scenes, where characters finally have a revelation or admit their feelings, so damn public? How often is it actually considered cute? Why canāt characters just talk to each other and be open and genuine, without having an audience to clap for them at the end?
Anyway, the premise itself wasnāt groundbreaking (what is it about Netflix making movies about asian girls writing letters?). However, I enjoyed a calm tone this movie had. I wish theyād just made the plot more exciting? or not as confusing?
After watching the trailer I was under an impression that Paul was going to find out sooner that Ellie liked Aster, and the movie would be about him helping her instead, which I still think would make for a more interesting story. Itās a shame we spent so much time on a relationship between Paul and Aster, that was obviously not going to last.
In conclusion, The Half of It wonāt become something Iād like to rewatch or contemplate about. With all its good parts the movie was unsatisfying for me. It felt like we werenāt following an arc but were rather seeing a chain of events in a characterās life. That sure is realistic but doesnāt make for a very entertaining story. Nonetheless, I think it was a nice refresher from all the quirky unrealistic romcoms that weāre flooded with.
