imagine if there was a slug civilization where they executed people with diatomaceous earth
Nelly Dean has an aura of being a normal person looking in on the chaos, but she's pretty self-deceptive about how malicious she was towards Catherine. 'Oh, she was just sort of proud, so I kind of liked to humble her' and then she describes very manipulative and dishonest stuff she did to torment Catherine... She's probably one of the less malicious people but because she's the narrator we see a lot of the bad stuff she does.
Not using the terms bad person or good person because those terms aren't real and cause mind/soul decay
When I saw that Minae Mizumura had written "Art is not democratic. Art is Sublime," I suddenly thought about how remarkable it is that such an opinion is shared by those with egalitarian political values. This does not apply to Mizumura herself, because I don't know what her specific opinions are. Still, it's common to meet liberals with humanist attitudes who have this kind of cognitive dissonance between their politics and their aesthetics.
I don't believe you can truly oppose hierarchical social relations without cultivating a deep contempt for the concept of a literary canon and the ideology of 'classics.'
Mizumura speaks of certain market trends in mass media -- which are difficult to talk to without a separate post -- as representing the opposite of true literary merit, and I agree. I hope that a popular trend based on mass participation emerges and totally vapourizes the world of literature that lingers on from the past.
Perhaps it will be one of those medieval hysteria plagues that made everyone dance...

All Intellectual Property is evil
thinking about the time my local garden centre put signs up that said "propagation piracy is a crime" and explained that "propagation piracy" is when you pick up a leaf or a twig that's fallen on the floor and take it home and grow a plant from it. I came home and mocked this because it's obviously extremely pathetic and stupid, and my ex got salty and said they were right and I was just like. you literally call yourself a communist and you are defending the right of corporations to protect their hypothetical future profits by classifying it as a crime to pick up a leaf

It's really hard to understand what is and isn't bodily autonomy when it comes to social pressures. Do people want to alter their bodies or are they being pressured into it... but really, there is no such thing as an authentic individual self that can make these decisions free of pressure. We are social pressure, it's part of us just like our bodies

This picture of a 'shanty town' in Peru looks quite similar to the Barracks Settlement in Yume Nikki! Especially how it is located in a desert. This lines up with the other Peruvian references in Yume Nikki, namely the Paracas style art and the Inca motif on Madotsuki's character design.

I don't believe that cultures can be better than each other, but I think it can be good to have a past culture for modern ones to organize themselves around and to inspire them
I'm really tempted to start posting in glossolalia, just typing in made up words
