it feels like we're only beginning to realize how much psychological heterogeny exists among humans

let's forget about the idea of human nature together

I'm sure it was because of volcano activity, people saw fire emerging from the earth and so always had a vague idea that beneath the surface, it was hot. The Phlegraean fields, Vesuvius, Etna etc.

btw does the characterisation of christian hell being hot and underground predate modern knowledge about earth's core and magma layers? was it because people dug deep enough to notice it was hotter? did people directly attribute the eruption of volcanos to something exiting from inside the earth and therefore hell? i haven't read dante's inferno feel like that might have some answers.

It's funny that antiwork is such a haunting presence in our society, almost a constructed devil for our society that represents everything we fear, that people feel the need to bring it up as a negative label even when it's totally irrelevant to the topic (like here)

(I wonder if the second person loves or hates the idea of nobody having to work? I get the impression it's the second... Either way, it's a ridiculous response)

tech cynicism is always bad and authoritarian

let's change our species into something synthetic and genetically engineered

I am not a particularly techno-optimistic person or a futurist or singularity believer or anything like that, but I think it kinda sucks that a lot of people in reacting to the nebulous threat of “the tech bros” have let themselves be negatively polarized against pretty straightforwardly correct ideas like “bodily autonomy and assistive technology is cool” (that is, fundamentally, the spirit that motivates transhumanism) and “death is scary and tragic.” One of the oldest extant works of human literature is largely about how awful mortality is and how hard it is to come to terms with death; it is in fact an incredibly common sentiment throughout history, and just because some people you know who really suck are also scared of dying doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

IMO vampire can mean anyone and everyone who doesn't fit into the ideology of work and employment, which includes both feudal nobility and ppl begging for money at opposite ends of the spectrum, it can be exploited or exploiters, whats important is that they do not contribute to the homogenized social order (which is basically good even for the nobility)

I know vampirism is often used as a metaphor for the drain of the aristocracy but I think it would be fun to have more vampire characters who were just some guy before they got turned. You seek out the most ancient vampire in existence and find out he was a 40 year old wheat farmer in ancient Mesopotamia when he was turned 7,000 years ago and he hasn’t been doing much since then.

It's a probably a distortion based on whoever stopped sending Zheng He

*Looks up* the Hongxi and Xuande emperors.

Totally a wrong narrative, really it was admirable that these emperors didn't want to go down the overseas colonization path + they never closed off the country

a while ago i heard someone say “it’s crazy to think that china used to be a world superpower, and then one of their emperors decided he hated all foreigners and completely closed the country off, and they’ve never recovered since. imagine what they could have been if not for that one man’s decision” and the thing that drives me nuts is i know a lot of chinese history and i cannot for the life of me think who this might be about

while the fact they advertized them as 'dire wolves' is inaccurate and misleading, it's not good that so many people are treating the new wolves as some kind of horrible thing due to the process by which they came into being.

I love genetically engineered species and I hope infinite numbers of them arise in the future

There is no purity in nature
