I really wanted to post a video about this but itβs so much that I canβt fit it into my daily media limit for tumblr, which sucks.
So as well all probably know, thereβs been a sharp rise in mental disorders in kids/teens (generally this generation to be honest).
Mental disorders like depression,anxiety, paranoia, eating disorders, ptsd etc. are becoming more prominent in this generation. Probably from social media, social standards, issues at home and maybe their general environment. Becuase of this, some people are starting to normalize it or romanticize and are starting to literally FAKE MENTAL DISORDERS! These people are doing this either for attention, or they think itβs cute or quirky or maybe EVEN FUN!! Which it is NOT.
Because of this, nobody is taking it seriously anymore. Iβve had friends whoβve been sent to psych wards (MULTIPLE FRIENDS) because theyβve been self harming or even tried to kill themselves. Like hereβs a list:
Iβve had a friend who was bulimic and self harmed, they were caught and sent.
Iβve had a mutual friend cut themselves in their bathtub and almost BLED OUT, they were sent
Iβve had a friend who was cutting themselves, they were sent
One of my friends had a friend that literally killed themselves
Like this is ridiculous. When I tell trusted adults about this, they donβt take me seriously because they think all teens are like this and itβs just a phase and arenβt taking their issues seriously. Like itβs absolutely heart breaking. Itβs to the point where some kids I know arenβt being sent to therapy or anything because their care taker doesnβt believe that this is serious. Itβs all becuase of the people faking it and exploiting it for attention. If youβre one of these people, you can actually choke becuase that is so rude and ruining others chances to GET HELP!
Itβs to the point where itβs influencing others to think they have a disorder becuase of how itβs being romanticized and normalized. Iβve had friends think they have something becuase they were maybe sad or anxious a few times. Like seriously.
These arenβt something to joke about or mess around with because it influences people to think they have something. It also influences people to think SELF HARM is COOL!
I had someone I knew back in 6th grade and I recently found out something terrible about them. This person literally started to encourage self harm in their peers. Like I had this one girl I was friends with and this person literally PROVIDING A KNIFE FOR MY FRIEND TO CUT THEMSELVES WITH! Telling people to self harm is absolutely DISGUSTING and if you do that, you really need to rethink your life choices and your morals. Something is really wrong with you. Now this girl started to self harm and really destroyed her body and it was not fun to watch this. It really wasnβt. Then their parents didnβt take them seriously. Like you see what I mean?? THIS IS GETTING OUT OF HAND!
STOP FAKING MENTAL DISORDERS
STOP ENCOURAGING BAD HABITS
STOP INFLUECING YOUNG MINDS TO THINK THESE THINGS ARE OKAY
Depression isnβt just sadness, just because youβre sad once doesnβt mean you automatically have it. Depression is an inbalance of chemicals in your brain. Itβs causes sadness, suicidal thoughts (and a lot of cases), fatigue, lack of motivation, isolation, tiredness, either oversleeping or lack of sleep, and many other things because depression effects different people different ways. It can also lead to a plethera of other disorders too.
Anxiety isnβt just being nervous. Itβs also about over sweating, being scared to literally leave the house. Checking your outfit again and again. Feeling like someone is judging your every move. Being over stimulated in large crowds. Panic attacks, anxiety attacks, feeling constantly over whelmed. Itβs like a literal demon in your head is eating away at you. Itβs terrifying. Lack of sleep because your thoughts are going a million miles an hour. Hearing every little thing and freaking out over it. Itβs horrifying and it feels like your day is lasting 10 hours longer than it needs to. Itβs can also trigger over things like tics (uncontrollable movements and sounds that you literally canβt stop, but this isnβt very common at all), paranoia, loss of sleep, isolation and it goes on and on.
OCD isnβt just wanting to be organized. Itβs repeating the same action several times to feel SAFE. Itβs living your life in a very specific way because if you donβt, you feel like something bad is going to happen. Maybe youβll die, maybe your mom will get sick and die, maybe youβre house will burn down. You never know. They need constant reassurance. Theyβll flick a light switch 8 times just to make sure itβs off. Theyβll wash their face several times in a row until it feels clean enough. Theyβll literally lick themselves in their house and itβs not fun or cute.
Paranoia isnβt being anxious. Itβs being terrified. Needing constant reassurance of your safety. Itβll keep you from leaving the house, or even going on your phone. Itβll make you feel like someone is constantly after you or a loved one and you need to constantly check to make sure nobody is outside, or tracking you. Some people literally rip apart their room to make sure thereβs no cameras or something watching them. It eats you away and consumes your daily life.
PTSD isnβt just being traumatized from something. Itβs like someoneβs in your head constantly reminding you of whatever traumatized you. Giving you mental images of it, making you relive it. Having constant nightmares of it. Being scared. It can also make your personality do a whole 180 on you and change you drastically. It makes you more paranoid, more cautious, more nervous. You wake up every morning with a constant reminder of what happened. Itβs rips you apart as a person and mentally to the point of breakdowns.
Anorexia isnβt just avoiding eating to get slimmer or dieting a lot. Itβs constantly trying to lose weight and never being satisfied. Youβre constantly insecure. Even though you LITERALLY have nothing to lose, you still feel the need to lose more. Youβre basically just skin and bones. You over exercise as well. When you have no nutrients in your body your hair falls out. Your nails and bones become brittle. You become weak until you eventually DIE.
Bulimia isnt something you should even fake. It destroys your body and damages your organs. It burns your esophagus from the repeated exposure to acids and well as the skin on your fingers. It makes people very insecure and can lead to gag reflex issues and shouldnβt be encouraged periodt. Donβt say βjust throw your food upβ to people looking to lose weight becuase in reality, you donβt lose any weight. You stay the same weight.
Self harm is NOT something that should be encouraged, especially in children/teens. Stop saying itβs okay. Stop doing it for attention. You can permanently mutilate your body. Itβll make you feel more insecure than you already where and some effects are irreversible. Donβt normalize it or romanticize it becuase the people who actually do it because they have no other way to cope arenβt being taken seriously and arenβt getting the help they need.
I can go on and on about this. Saying you have these SERIOUS issues is not okay unless you show valid signs of it or youβre professionally diagnosed. And DO NOT encourage these behaviors. Donβt normalize or romanticize it because adults will start to think itβs just a phase and people wonβt get the help they need.
Stop faking it.
Stop encouraging it.
