As I’m sure some may have noticed, Endeavor’s got his arc going on, where after finally realizing how horrible he is and tries to become a better person. But a problem I & many others tend to have resulting from this arc is that lots of folks talk about how Endeavor’s ‘different now’, how he’s changing, and how that makes him so much better than Thief Takami or, of course, Dabi (ugh); and as a result I think it’s important we to address is how…Bojack Horseman-y his attempts at changing have really been up until now. Think of it as in honor of Rei calling him out and hopefully forcing real progress out of him in the future, we’re going over his lack of progress so far.
So, let’s look through all his most notable attempts at changing in comparison to what he was doing before that he’s making up for, as well as anything else he’s done that might reflect in some fashion on his redemption:
-We can start with Rei; the woman who he bought, sexually abused for about a decade, psychically abused for 5 more years than that, and then had locked up in a hospital for another 10 years and which she has only just left. He tried to make up for that by having her favorite flowers delivered to her room in the hospital he had her sent to. This is about the average of what we can expect going forward, btw.
-Then there’s Fuyumi & Natsuo, who he deemed failures and neglected so much throughout their childhoods that he appears like a stranger to them, who they know more by the damage he’s done than any actual interactions. To make up for all that, he bought them a house to live away from him and not interact with him anymore, along with their mother when she leaves the hospital. (Not Shoto though, he still interreacts with Endeavor.) This is, unironically, the biggest and most selfless act of atonement he has committed thus far. All down hill from here!

not to get too fucking heated but the way even the narrative tries to make twice and his valuable relationships All About Hawks, the way it continues to emphasize how hawks had some positive feelings toward twice (and therefore that makes hawks complicated??), the way it keeps trying to sell the idea that these characters were significant to each other beyond how one manipulated and killed the other on behalf of law enforcement, and how every single hawks stan capitalizes off of this—
it annoys me so fucking much -_- i genuinely hate this character and i hate anyone who finds depth to this shit or acts like this is somehow makes good narrative use of twice.

2ly it can be very funny. recently read a fic where one girl is like "shes talkingshitaboutme. shes sooooooo talkingshitaboutme" and her friend is like "OoooKay" (psychologically revealing)
like yeah you are acting like a weird obsessive freak. ackshually. and its funny and i wuv it. yr friends dont want you to kiss but iiiiiiiii do

AND IK PPL HATE LOVE TRIANGLES but wouldn't it be so funny if Tsuyu did have a little girlcrush on Ochako at first but eventually she mostly got over it + assumed she's straight, only to find herself getting dragged along for thinly veiled dates between her best friend and the girl that tried to kill them 1000 times isn't that so silly
i think a lot of fic writers who are trying to stay in-character would benefit highly from figuring out some characters’ senses of humor and just… letting them be funny in different ways. ime i’m taken out of the story not during the serious and angsty moments, but most often when the writer inserts a line that they clearly think is funny but just reads so completely ooc for the specific character—polar opposite of the char’s usual word choice and humor, that it almost always immediately pings me as “something the author inserted because they personally think it’s funny.” more often than not i can probably tell when it’s actually the writer speaking, not the character, and it happens a looot with humor.
i remember when the bodysnatching happened and how hardly anyone else in the fandom (or what i saw of the fandom) seemed to find it as horrifying as i did. then the same thing happened again with the mind invasion. and yes the fact that the mind invasion happened at all and not even the story gave much of a fuck about the fact that it did is still one of biggest gripes with the finale
Talking to your Villain: Deku vs. Shigaraki and Ochako vs. Toga
Questionable method but I typed up all the dialogue spoken out loud in each encounter, from the moment things really start picking up steam to the moment the Villain's heart gets saved. The Heroes are trying to get through to the Villain - how much effort do they put into trying to have a dialogue?
Green is Hero Speaking; Red is Villain Speaking.
Need you note that Deku's 4 lines of green - the longest line he speaks - in the middle of his battle is actually not directed at Shigaraki. He's talking to Nana about smashing Shigaraki's lid. But maybe Shigaraki heard him, idk.
I also took out Tsuyu's speech to Toga. That was a good chunk of 'Hero trying to talk to Villain', and also just a good attempt too from Tsuyu, but we're focusing Ochako and Toga.
