in days before tragedy hits
one of my issues with the MLA arc resolution is that it just feels like a very incomplete understanding of ideology and praxis. it reminds me of people trying to ‘debate away’ nazis or antivaxxers or terfs or whatnot, bcs there’s this idea that the ideology will just… go away if you “win” somehow?? which is a very liberal understanding of ideological conflict imo. there are a lot of ideologies that are illogical, and which rely on the denial of facts and the invention of conspiracy theories to sustain themselves, which is why it’s so impossible to “win” against those people. but even when you move away from those ideologies and get into ones that are more liberal or leftist, you still get ideological conflict, and you’re often met with clashes of fundamental values, and opinions about what is morally acceptable or necessary, and so forth. ideology is a whole system of ideas, built from the ground-up, and you often have to work long and hard to get to the foundation to significantly change it (eg: marxism isn’t just about being anti-capitalist, it comes with a whole set of ideas about human dignity, and human desires, and what constitutes human nature, and through what kind of means capitalism strips them away or modifies them, and why capitalism does this, etc. even before you get to anti-capitalism, a marxist and a neoliberal will probably already disagree about, like, human nature, and who deserves dignity and what dignity even means).
that’s why Redestro giving in so easily is so unsatisfying to me, because that’s rarely how it happens ime. given how many people complain about their jobs and their wages, but refuse to take the logical next step to complain about the economic system they live under, it makes no sense to me that this guy who benefits from hero society and that kind of societal order would want to expand his concept of “freedom” to include Shigaraki’s view. the change shouldn’t be as simple as Shigaraki showing off his quirk, i want to know: why does Redestro accept this as his new vision of freedom? where does he feel like the MLA’s own ideology fits in? if he discards the MLA’s ideology entirely, why does he think Shigaraki’s is better? where does he see himself fitting into Shigaraki’s final goal? there’s just so much that goes into the formation and adoption of an ideology that this abrupt about-face, without so much as touching upon those questions, makes it feel unrealistic, because it’s never just as easy as debunking one idea. it’s an entire system of beliefs, and if Shigaraki managed to change enough of it for Redestro to willingly and happily follow him, I need to know what changed, and why, and how it leads to this conclusion.
Hey so I took your header to heart and decided to sit down and read some Marx. Some of what he said comes from good ideas but did you know he was a huge anti-semite? I read a whole article written by him were he goes on rants about Jewish stereotypes and claims we need to get rid of them to achieve an equal society? As a Jewish person myself, I'm a little taken aback that you advertise his readings.
this ask is old af so i’ll cut my answer

it's interesting that bnha attracts many "fandom isn't activism" types (it's a big fandom, so of course they come here) when bnha IS imo very concerned with instilling a sense of ethics within its readers. bnha IS a series where the protagonist is right, the flawed characters on the protagonist's side "get better," the good guys win and the bad guys answer for their crimes. "fandom isn't activism" but good lord bnha is guiding you down the most lawfully sanctioned route.
yes, bnha goes through the trouble of characterizing the bad guys and showing the reasons behind their actions, but it insists that the bad guys should still be held accountable. which is fine, plenty of stories do, but bnha is: (1) really ethically very simple as a story because of that, and (2) stymies its own emotional storytelling because it's fundamentally more concerned with drawing lines in the sand that "good" and "bad" guys can't cross.
for example: good guys can never overly identify with the bad guys or put the harm bad guys have done on the back burner. we have to remember endeavor, natsuo, and shouto are more worried about other people's lives, even as touya is burning to death in front of them. there's no lapses in judgment, no wrong decisions, no selfishness, nothing crazy, no one making insane gambits that put others in the line of fire to save their loved one, no one to say "fuck the world, you're the one i choose." only villains do that.
it's love at its safest and most sanitized for capitalism, love that is only self-sacrificial, love that doesn't interfere with the law, love that doesn't upset the social order, love that never implicates the world. at this point, even deku going berserker mode over bakugou's death would be more interesting, but that impulse is immediately suppressed and he follows the plan to fight shigafo, without even going to bakugou's side. in ten years they'll be married with a child and they'll miss its 13th birthday in a row because they have to bust a trigger smuggling ring. please god it's so fucking bleak.
so, yeah, i believe in the villains' relationships more. they make disruptive, unhinged, terrible decisions out of love and i love that for them. spinner puts the hand back on tomura's face, dabi burns down himiko's house, spinner wants to save tomura by walking into hell with him, himiko wants to pay back twice's death a hundred times over, and she knows what dabi will try to do and she lets him do it. it's fucking unhinged and i am invested!
people really are out here giving takes like "fandom isn't activism so the characters i like aren't really cops, but the LOV make each other worse so they have to be saved from themselves by paw patrol" as though that isn't the most vanilla take on the gotdamn earth... i don't want the shit that's been workshopped by therapists and lawyers for maximum correctness, give me some crazy deranged shit that'll determine the fate of the world.
Ppl: “Glaze and nightshade all your art!!”
Also ppl: * does not mention that you need to have a fucking NVIDIA GPU and running nightshade on one image takes at best 20 minutes*
Like the online version of glaze/nightshade requires an account. And last time i checked they arent accepting new accounts because of the high pressure.
Like i make my art on my ipad. My MacBook is from 2014. If i tried to download and run nightshade on my decade old macbook and go throufg 10+ years of artworks i might as well just set it on fire.
