The way that I understood it was that supernatural creatures like Seers or witches/mages where encoded into their DNA. Like no matter what Ethan and Benny did there was no way to never NOT become these supernatural creatures (even if they did have special moments to 'unlock' this ability. Although for me it feels more akin to learning to run rather than magical girl transformation type unlocking but thats boring).
