He said I wasn't the center Of the universe but I was a star He never orbited around me And I was strong but never asked
I was no galaxy I had no planets
But he was an asteroid that Got caught up in my pull He could never look at me Or be close enough to touch
I was too bright I was too hot
And I could not be cold or dull I was a wildfire untamed So I was just one burning star Among the infinite others
A little nature once in a while To break the trend of Love and other inward feelings
Show me a canyon Not that one, not the grand one Show me a regular canyon With water still flowing through
Show me the red of its walls Like a prehistoric mural Of erosion and persistence
Nature moves on, you know This earth shrugs us off We destroy it and it destroys us Nature breaks us all down
The winter cardinals Have finished their work Of raising wobbly chicks Into fierce and steady Juveniles, ready to Graze the sky with the Tips of their wings And soar off gracefully Away on their own breeze A fresh, solo journey
The parents are not Left behind, they are Quietly content, free To fly wherever they please The male a radiant scarlet And she such prominent earth Tones, the blazing yellow Of their beaks like Flames flying by on the Biting morning winds
The serene songbirds Mated for life, they fly Side by side, sharing One current of frigid air Wings spread out together As they glide in sync With nothing more to be Done, they settle in their Empty nest and sleep freely And warmly with each other
Step out into the wind with me On this frozen night That bears no snow
Do you know the meaning Of the cold? Do you know what it offers us?
Take my hand, you are safe Feel the subzero gust Feel the way it burns your face
I am shivering right beside you Are you alive Like I am on an icy evening?
I cannot make promises to you That I might meet you in old age In a time period I cannot predict I cannot promise you a long life Or a vow to always be beside you
It is a desire, a dull craving even To see the sun rise this morning And tomorrow and the next day If I had the ability, or the knowing I would give you security in facts
All that is certain to me currently Is that uncertainty is in our water It is in that river down below us It is in the tap that fills our glasses It is one of the few true comforts I can offer, darling, please don't cry
The food has been dropped off again And I can't put it away And it's all I can think about That I need to put it away and can't
But my hands are getting warmer And my fingers are starting to burn And my body feels like it's vibrating And the food needs to go in the fridge But I can't put it away so I fall asleep
I wake up and the food has gone bad I'm afraid it's gone bad so it's bad And my dad says that people are starving And I've wasted more food again
So I pull the blankets over my head And I do nothing all day Because I couldn't put the food away Because I couldn't get up and move And wonder if maybe my brain is melting
As the sun rises out Of the early morning sky I shelter my eyes as It winks at me And I am warmed By the secret between us Of how days are made
Shine brightly, my sun Or are you shy today? Linger behind The safety of a cloud And if you are sad I won't look for you In your escape into rain
We used to be birds In a cage together When we thought We wanted to live there
Now we soar high In different weather Spreading wings In the same open air
I've seen you in clouds I'll see you forever I flew to the heavens You flew everywhere
What are the laws of nature? Can you tell me? I can only think of one That energy cannot be created Or destroyed That it can only reconstruct One form into another
So what makes a flower bloom? Did I give the blossom My energy? I assume it comes from somewhere Within the soil, the stem But let me believe I can transform Into a beautiful thing too
Where do moths live in winter? Where do wild chickens go? I see them out now that it's spring But how did they brave the snow?
How do frogs slow their bodies To sleep within the ice? Who else shelters in the walls With the warm and cozy mice?
I wonder if the fish feel cold When all the lakes freeze over Now I welcome back the friends I haven't seen since last October
Though the finches and the foxes Have been here all year long I just saw the first chipmunk Since all of them had gone
How do rabbits breathe In all the ground they are under? I guess that I could look it up But it's more fun to wonder
Frost came and bit the earth, Snowflakes fell like feathers. Crystals landed cold upon me, Some were just the weather.
Icicles dripped upon my heart And froze it for forever, I think it beats in winter squalls, Although it's just the weather.
