Summary: Nancy wants to understand more about her girlfriend’s interesting past.

A/N: I love this AU and vampire!Reader so hope you guys like this! Although technically a part 2, this can be read as a standalone.

“What does it taste like?”

Nancy’s question admittedly had caught you off-guard. Never had you shared a relationship so intimately with a human who knew what you were and therefore, had never had to describe such a thing. It rendered you dumbfounded and bested, scrambling your thoughts together to try and concoct a half-decent answer. Then again, Nancy Wheeler usually did have that effect on people.

“Blood?” You asked, rather stupidly. 

“No, honey, the other meals you’ve been having the past 1000, or whatever years you have been alive.” Nancy laughed, shaking her head at you in disbelief. “Of course, I mean blood!”

You swallowed thickly, confused by Nancy’s sudden interest in the taste of blood. Things had been relatively normal since you revealed your vampiric status to her. You had gone along with life as usual, with Nancy just having the added context about you. It actually made her feel safer; she fell asleep at night clutching tightly on to you while you enjoyed watching over her and feeling her heart beating in her chest against your body. If she asked questions, then she might start to get scared of you again when she heard your answers. Although, you should have prepared yourself for the day that Nancy started to ask questions. As an aspiring journalist, it was quite literally her forte.

“Well,” you shakily began, walking through the woods backwards with your hands in your pockets, facing her as she followed you.  “It tastes different for me than it would for you. It would probably taste metallic and unpleasant for you. But for me, it’s like a sweet wine.”

Nancy nodded, rolling her tongue along the inside of her cheek. You tried to gauge her reaction. It wasn’t of disgust, nor was it of fear. She seemed indifferent, if not a little interested.

“Huh.” Was all she replied and it unnerved you. That was it? No follow-up, no third degree. Just a simple acceptance from the detail oriented and vastly intelligent Nancy? Something wasn’t right.

“That’s all I get, is it? ‘Huh’?” You asked, laughing lightly with hopes that Nancy might take her cards away from her chest and reveal what was going on inside her mind.

“Yeah, I was just curious.” She hummed sweetly and continued walking, as if you’d just told her something completely normal. 

You continued to walk backwards along the trail, feeling like you’d escaped her interrogation relatively unscathed. Nancy’s cheeks and nose turned pink as the cold bit at them while your complexion remained even and unaffected. Your jacket was more for style rather than substance and you couldn’t help but notice the slight shudder in Nancy’s shoulders as she shivered.

“Do you want my jacket? You look cold.” You offered. She gave you a sweet smile and a grateful nod. Immediately, you removed your jacket and draped it over her delicate shoulders. It hugged her petite frame and she seemed instantly satisfied to be wrapped in something you owned, pulling it round herself so it held her tighter.

“Better?” You asked.

“Better.” She replied, smiling but studying your face. Her curiosity returned for another round as she clearly pondered something else about you.

“What was your life like before… this?” Her next question made her earlier survey of you begin to make sense. She was trying to picture you in other time periods and how you might have fitted into them. To the others in Hawkins, you appeared as though you had lived there your whole life but she knew the truth. Your body had persisted for many lifetimes since your birth. How many identities had you had in your time on this planet?

It had been a long time since you really thought about what life was like before this never-ending existence. Having been a vampire for so long, you had started to forget what life was like as a human. Being so close to Nancy gave you little surprising reminders, like the way she’d get tired and fall asleep on you or the way her breath would quicken when she got stressed. Nonetheless, you still felt a million miles away from that life.

“I was a princess.” You started, thinking carefully about your past life. “I was changed right before The Crusades.”

Nancy’s jaw suddenly dropped, clearly fascinated by your admission. She tilted her head to search for eye contact and sped up her pace but you continued backwards, avoiding it.

“You were a princess?! What?! How have you never told me this before?” Nancy exclaimed excitedly but then frowned at your grimacing and uncomfortable expression.

“Yeah, the leader of my coven decided he wanted me so he kidnapped me and changed me into a vampire. I’ve been like this ever since.” You mumbled in explanation, burying your hands deeper into your hoodie pockets and slumping your shoulders. The memory came with a sting, even more so as you had put off thinking about it for quite some time.

But you loved Nancy, and if she was going to accept you for who you were, you would answer all of her questions until she was satisfied.

“Oh, baby,” she said softly, her voice soothing and laced with concern. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought it up.” “No, it’s okay. Now you know why I hunt bad guys who hurt women and children.” You shook your head, rolling your shoulders back to try and assert some sort of feigned confidence. Whilst you did hunt women too, men were far more likely to be the ones committing such heinous crimes.

“So…” Nancy started but was unsure if she should continue. “Just because he decided he wanted you, you’ve to stay with him?” Her eyebrows knitted together as she tried to understand the arrangement of your coven and feared it might be something more sinister than she imagined.

“I can leave if I want to but it’s lonely out there and I don’t really have the means to start my own coven.” You told her, although the possibility of starting your own coven hadn’t occurred to you. The one you were in was fine, although you had never truly fitted in. You mostly spent your time with Nancy anyway and were more than capable of hunting on your own.

Nancy parcelled that information and stored it for another time, not wanting to push you on it today. The intention was that she’d eventually attempt to persuade you to leave your captor, but she didn’t want to risk upsetting you after you’d been so gracious in opening up to her. Instead, she continued down another line of questioning.

“Didn’t Dracula live through the Crusades?” Nancy considered aloud.

“Maybe,” you shrugged. “Although, if your cultural reference for vampires is Dracula then I’m disappointed, Nance.”

“What? Why? What other one could there be?” She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.

“Carmilla of course! She came way before Dracula and she’s much better.” You said and watched Nancy give you a look of genuine interest. “A gay vampire who lures in beautiful women, sound familiar?”

Nancy blushed at that, dipping her head in an attempt to hide just how wide her smile was. If there was one thing you were sure of, it was that you’d never get tired of your girlfriend’s bashful responses to your flirting.

“I’ll need to check that one out.” Nancy grinned, still feeling giddy about your compliment and hiding her face with the lapels of your jacket.

It became clear that Nancy wasn’t going to become terrified of you again. Naturally, she’d have questions about your life. All she wanted to do was understand you and feel closer to you. A part of you had been hidden from her up until now and she was entitled to look further into it. If anything, it made her love you more because it was honest. Now she’d had a preview, she was furiously conjuring up further questions in her mind to put to you.

“What’s something you’ve learned over the years?” She asked next. Her question was good. Obviously, it was. Nancy was born to be a journalist. It made you pause before landing on something worthwhile.

“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,

And then is heard no more. It is a tale 

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, 

Signifying nothing.”

The words rolled off your tongue, having heard them many times before. It was a beautiful piece from Shakespeare’s MacBeth that you enjoyed and had sadly up until a short while ago, related to. Nancy, having also recognised it from being the conscientious student she was, frowned in response.

“Is that what you think about life?” She asked, perplexed by your choice of answer.

“It was.” You answered simply. “Until I met you.” 

At this, she couldn’t help but blush. Despite having seen her naked many times, it was always your way with words that caused Nancy to become sheepish. 

“Fan of Shakespeare then?” She giggled, prodding your shoulder.

“He’s alright, met him a couple of times. Doesn’t quite live up to watching ABBA win Eurovision in person back in ‘74 though.” You coyly replied, knowing that would pique her interest. 

“This just gets better and better!” Nancy told you, looking at you in complete awe. It was like you were a character who had managed to walk off the pages of a book and into her world. To her, you truly were something amazing and magical to behold.

“Okay, one last question.” She stated and you gave her an encouraging expression. Altering your path, you moved so that you could walk alongside her and put your arm round her, bracing yourself for the question.

“Am I the only one you’ve ever been in love with?”

“Yes.” Your answer came without any hesitation, because it was true. You’d never felt anything for anyone the way you felt for Nancy.

“But you’ve lived for so long.”

“I’ve had mates before, sure. But it was nothing like this, Nance. We are unbreakable.” You explained and pressed a kiss to her temple.

“But I’m a human.” She responded with a melancholic sigh. Often, you tried to forget about Nancy’s prospective mortality and the fact that one day, you would lose her. Once in her presence, you were only able to focus on her and worshipping her. She just had to taint the moment with a callous and untimely reminder that your time together was limited.  

Nevertheless, it was a cruel fact of life. You would endlessly persist in this existence long after Nancy was six feet under. It had taken you a millennium to find her, who knew when you might find someone else again. There was no other Nancy Wheeler and there never would be another one again.

When she died, your chance at love would die with her.

“I just try to make the most of what we have together.” You offered shyly, rubbing her arm and holding her a little closer.

“What if I ever changed my mind? You know, about not wanting to be a vampire.” A final yet incredibly important question slipped from Nancy’s lips before she could stop it. Although she had not carefully considered it before asking, she didn’t seem to regret asking it. In fact, she found herself eager to hear your answer.

“Well, if you do change your mind, then let me know. Until then, Nance, I’m happy to just spend every moment with you.”

She let out a contented hum at your answer just as she had done earlier and didn’t say anything else. Instead, she leaned into your hold, resting her head on your shoulder and enjoying the rest of your walk through the woods together.

“WHATD YOU EAT STEVE” you yelled as you clung onto the back of your boyfriend trying to pry his face mouth open to grab whatever it was he ate off the floor “SPIT. IT. OUT”. Eddie and Steve were chuckling from the couch watching you fight a monster that could clearly eat you in two bites if he really wanted to “NEVER” Steve said throw a mouth/face full of the steak you were gonna cook yourself for dinner “SPIT IT OUR RIGHT NOW OR SO HELP ME GODDDD” you continued trying to grab whatever it was while also trying to avoid his sharp teeth.

When that plan failed you decided to take more drastic measures and switch to plan B. The spray bottle, you knew the boys hated when you got the spray bottle because you always filled it with hot water. You huffed and stomped into the kitchen the sound of the sink turning on and something being filled could be heard from the living room. “Ooooo your in trouble Stevie” Eddie snickered “should’ve just spit it out like they asked” Billy grunted taking a sip of the bottle of bleach he had sitting on the table in front of him “you don’t think their-“ before he could finish you had already entered the room the dreaded spray bottle in your hand

“now Stevie I’m gonna give you one last chance, spit it out or your getting sprayed” you twisted the nozzle so it wasn’t mist but the precise stream Steve shook his head even going as far as to throw the steak in the air before catching it continuing to gnaw on it “wrong choice big boy” Eddie said before you began blasting hit Steve anywhere and everywhere you could with the offending liquid “I warned you Stevie”

It took five minutes if you spraying before Steve spit out what was left of your poor steak that you were gonna cook yourself “damn it Stevie that was my dinner” you huffed crossing your arms over your chest. Steve looked like a little kid after being scolded as he shuffled to you keeping his head down and burying himself in your arms shoving his face into your hair “m’sorry I’ll buy you a new one” he mumbles, you just sigh and reach up to run your fingers through his now wet hair “hell yeah you will and your gonna cook it” Steve nodded and clung to you tighter not wanting you to be mad at him anymore.

Eddie and Billy were dying of laughter from their spots on the couch clinging to each other as tears rolled down their cheeks and their stomachs hurt from how hard they were cracking up. “Y’all wanna be next” you snarked pointing the spray bottle towards them “not at all sweetheart” Eddie said putting his hands up while they both tried to hold in their laughs. You rolled your eyes and went back to petting Steve’s head noticing he had began making a weird purring/growling noise “awe poor little Stevie had to get a hug after he got in trouble and sprayed” Billy snickered along with Eddie earning them both a couple of sprays from the bottle watching as you mouthed ‘be nice or your next’ before you went back to holding Steve while he kept mumbling apologies.
