Introduction!

Plot: Snufkin goes on a journey with his aunt, Khaliah, who is Joxter’s older sister. Snufkin at the time was 4-5 years old and had never met his father so he was excited to finally meet him (she comes to visit the Mymble when the clan’s Seer informs Joxter he has a son). However, during the journey to where the Joxter was situated, the two are ambushed by a group of creatures who capture mumriks. They are taken to a camp with at least 100 odd mumrik, who are all trapped in cages or in a fighting area at the centre of the camp. It’s here Snufkin gets his harmonica from his aunt. They meet a man named Rahh, an old grey mountain mumrik (more info on types of mumrik will be posted with examples, tagged as #MumrikRaces). They spend about a week in this camp before Snufkin and Rahh escape, unfortunately, Kahliah dies while distracting the guards. Rahh carries Snufkin in a small wooden crate all the way to a beach. This is where Snufkin’s love of the sea starts because it reminds him of his survival and how precious life is. The two spend 2 days on the shore before they set off again towards where the Joxter is camped.

Once they arrive, Snufkin realises that Joxter is a member of a clan, one of the largest in the world. over 150 mumriks are in this clan and it’s always increasing, little by little. Rahh is greeted by Joxter after a few minutes of chatting between the clan leader Ekavir. Rahh hands of the crate Snufkin is inside and begins to explain how he believes Kahliah may be dead. after the news, Joxter is clearly upset but continues as he normally would. He takes Snufkin to meet his Wife Fauna and their one-year-old daughter, Aura. Snufkin spends 5 years with the clan as a full member, he gets close to the leader’s daughter Amala who is the same age as Snufkin. During his time in the clan, Fauna passes away while giving birth to a son named Joseph (this is 2 years after he arrives at the clan).

Snufkin is now aged 9-10 years old, which in mumrik culture is when a mumrik is old enough to survive alone. He is best friends with the clan leader’s daughter, Amala. He is being bullied by an older mumrik boy named Baltek (he’s 11-12 years old). Baltek frames Snufkin for a crime and gets him banished from the clan.

Snufkin leaves and travels alone for a year before he meets Moomin! He meets Moomin the same way he does in the movie and series. The plot of the AU continues after these when they are all teenagers/young adults.

New Characters:

Kahliah- middleaged forest mumrik, Snufkin’s aunt, butch lesbian gal, sweet as hell, deceased.

Rahh- Very old mountain mumrik, kind, wise, was a loner, has a single daughter in a faraway clan named Freya.

Amala- a natural born leader, confident, prideful, rational, calm, protective and brave.

Ekavir- Prideful but not in such a good way, stubborn, protective, brave and strong-headed.

Fauna- she was a forest mumrik, sweet and gentle, blind in her left eye, motherly, small but strong, knew card tricks. Deceased.

Aura- forest mumrik like her parents, Snufkin’s little sister, energetic, prankster, kind, fun, protective of her brothers.

Joseph- forest mumrik, Aura’s younger brother, lazy, steals food from people, sleeps anywhere, loves watching birds and collecting feathers.

Baltek- Prideful in the wrong way, arrogant, coward, lies a lot, picks fights with weaker and younger mumriks. He is a Swamp mumrik.

Netvi- mountain mumrik, old, wise, seer, spiritual, healer, kind, she was close to Snufkin and considered making him her apprentice.

Randell (name may change) aka The Mumrik Slaughterer- His guy is in charge of the creatures who capture mumriks and kill them. He’s cruel, malicious and evil. he is half mumrik but no one knows. He spreads lies saying that mumriks are monsters and will destroy peoples homes and are ruthless killers. None of those statements are true.

There are also Spirits in this AU called elder guardians which are mumriks who would protect the land/earth when they were alive. now their ghosts help guide creatures who are lost, confused or need advice. It’s rare for one to appear.

Tawni- She is a tall forest elder guardian, she’s very motherly and speaks to Snufkin every now and then during his travels. Her aura is pale green. her hair and fur colour is dark tan.

Jasper- Short, strong, jovial, happy, loves to make people laugh, elder guardian, desert mumrik.

List of things that sparked joy in my little Ancient culture enthusiast heart:

The moths in the Ancient Urban are essentially pigeons, including the fact some of them are tagged.

Finally a proper and canon confirmation that Ancients really did have pets, positive relationships with animals and weren't Only stuck in glass cubes on display like Moon implies once. It can also mean that they did research into animal behaviour, such as tracking migrating and such. From how biologists are in real life, we can assume they were even genuinely passionate & happy about these type of things.

All the pottery and plates in that workshop room,

A confirmation that they did have paper and used scrolls for writing stuff down,

alongside with the pearls that they, too, could perhaps freely read or one of those things on the shelf there might be a pearl reader, if it is more technologically based (CDs type information keeping)

I also wonder if those things there are books- with stone tablet pages or paper ones? digital things hidden in hardcovers?- or something else entirely. Do they maybe hold orders for earthenware?

The masks on the wall, they feel so real compared to the murals.

List Of Things That Sparked Joy In My Little Ancient Culture Enthusiast Heart:

Are they of the same person or is it of the workers there or maybe a family? Some of them look similar to those in the murals.

While at the concept of family, they had creches, but it doesn't sound like it was an outright job in the sense that they seem to have been community-raised (I fuckin' knew it I can put down my tin hat now).

List Of Things That Sparked Joy In My Little Ancient Culture Enthusiast Heart:

They had hard beds, similar to what used to be used in old china iirc, along with that pillow/headrest

This kinda thing. They were made out of porcelain to keep the head cool in the night, but I think some where out of wood too.

The bustling of the city.

The normalcy of people going about their day, talking, the vehicles zipping by (they had some kind of motor vehicles!!!!).

The architecture, in both the Ancient Urban and the Outer Rim (those roofs made the right side worth it to me, that's how much I love these bastards)

I find it very funny that what looks to me like a REALLY poor ass cable management seems like the height of decorative prowess to them. Also some insight into how the void ,,bath" actually looked like.

The toys... just the toys.

And the one about him remembering the halls he ran through- oh when I say that I adore the fact that this Echo is a kid stuck here, lonely and vulnerable with polite speech not plaguing it.

The original Echoes combined with the Iterators' distaste for the species as whole painted the Ancients as these heartless things lazer focused only on the Ascension, religion and rituals. There wasn't much space for thinking about them in a more human manner and I feel like most of the fandom did depict the Ancients only as the impression was given. Bunch of posh full of themselves suckups, uncaring much for one another or anything around them.

I get kinda annoyed when there's an insistance that some kind of sapient species has done only bad. With humans, too, I just about had it with the demonization, negativity and staggering blindness to the beauty and good we can and do create- in both fiction and reality. Same goes for these dumbasses.

Disko kid here begs to challenge that impression. He's lost and alone and kind of scared, stuck here not knowing how to move forward. He mourns the regularity and simplicity of his room, the nostalgia of shelves and toys, the golden sunrays sneaking in through the windows. He brings a certain humanity into the consideration of Ancients.

That maybe, only maybe.. they deserve to be mourned.
