Rewatching tmnt 2012 has been so wild because I remember when I was a kid, Donnie was my favorite so I thought I’d just revert back to that right?? a lot of my info comes from my own personal experience and understanding of martial arts! I started practicing the bo staff and learned some of the basics but also I was a black belt in tae kwon do!

Studying fighting styles and martial arts in general is not only a personal passion of mine but is also a part of my career as an action board artist. Watching tournaments and listening to fellow martial artists as well as how other people portray this information in media is a fun study along with psychology for me.

As an animator, when I made those critiques about how the characters fight, it was out of person frustration with the incorrect representation and also using gimmicks of fighting that aren't... useful. ever. (I will forever hate 2012 donnie being portrayed as weak when his weapon is a staple of martial arts FOR A REASON!!) but I also want to point out that they made that show in a time when more action-oriented shows were starting to gain attention. Anime helped influence a lot of 2012's mannerisms but because the show was done in 3D, that creates a LOT of limitations.

Most of my knowledge on the subject is from self-studying for YEARS, personal training with a master, and my job. I know quite a few martial artists who watched 2012 actually reached out to me in shock that they always felt the action in the show was a bit off and didn't realize until I pointed out the flaws. You don't always see this sort of thing a lot of the time but when a nerd who focuses a lot of their brain on action (like me) comes around and points it out, it can help you process what's going on and WHY something doesn't work.

when it comes to studying action, I would suggest watching your favorite action movies and figure out why something did or didn't work from a narrative or visual perspective. A great example of some of the best action I've seen in a directed movie, is Jackie Chan's movies. He, himself, is a martial artist and for most of those movies he directed them HIMSELF. the reason why avatar the last airbenders action was so good is because they had a professional martial artist on set, 24/7, helping them with moves and directing the board artists. I'm gonna leave two videos I HIGHLY recommend you watch if you wanna understand this stuff more in depth, there's a ton of stuff about action and what works and doesn't in a cartoon or show that is so important to my specific craft~

I cried reading this. Dude, even Uraraka dehumanized Izuku and dismissed his safety and well-being over the war, I can understand but that doesn't make it hurt less.

Bakugou slowly takes the role of Izuku's protector and I love to see it.

During the Tartarus escapees arc, Izuku has been dehumanized so much, it's insane. When I say dehumanized, I'm talking about how many people treat him like the vessel of One for All and not like a 16yo boy or a human being with feelings anymore.

"Nomu", "Number nine"

Meanwhile, Bakugou calls him by his name..

"You're the key to all of this. We can't have you dying on us."

like "If you die it's gonna be bad bc nobody can fight AFO anymore" and not "you don't deserve to die plz take care"

"please let him rest so he can fight properly"

and not "because he suffers so much and deserves rest"

I could make a long list of that but my point is, the more we go into the story and the more people prioritize saving the world over Izuku's well being, treating him like a robot to repair like they're just willing to sacrifice Izuku ('s mental health/life) and bakugou is having none of it.

Ever since he learned about OFA and AFO, he started to help Izuku training out of worry.

While the others want Izuku to be stronger so he can beat AFO, bakugou wants him to be stronger so he can survive. He's worried about losing izuku the most. As simple as that. A lot care about Izuku as well of course, but most still think beating AFO is more important than giving a kid a healthy happy long life.

Bakugou totally noticed it and it makes him mad. He yelled at All Might, his idol and the man he respect the most, for hiding something about the fourth user to Izuku when Bakugou knew secrets might be harmful to Izuku physically or psychologically since even though everyone noticed that Izuku was mentally drowning under pressure, they didn't really do anything worth noting to support him (until class 1A brought him back to UA)

Bakugou never mentioned AFO when he talked about bringing Izuku back because it's not his priority at all.

He's literally just dead worried for his friend.

Please, the first thing he asked him after being separated for weeks, with a war and a coma in between, was if Izuku was able to smile.

He genuinely cares so much about Izuku's safety and mental health it makes me want to cry. Bakugou went from being the boy's bully to his legit protector, so dare tell me otherwise.

During the battle with Shigaraki, he constantly had his eyes fixed on Izuku to be sure he wouldn't do anything risky and the moment Izuku really left his side to attack, Bakugou was pissed.

and he ended up saving Izuku, almost sacrificing for him. Not for a strategic purpose to keep OFA. His body literally moved on its own and all he could think about was everything Izuku and him went through. He wanted to save his childhood friend.

Honestly at this point I can confidently say that if Deku's death was the only solution to defeat/kill AFO then bakugou would prefer not to win. The guy who's obsessed with victory would totally prefer to lose than to have Izuku killed, that's a fact.

Now despite the apology, I dont think Izuku really understands how dedicated Bakugou is to protect him yet. I can't wait to see how their relationship will evolve.

Of course Bakugou isn't the only one who cares more about Izuku's life than OFA (class 1A, All Might, etc) but Bakugou's character development still has me crying.

So it looks like this chapter does confirm that All for One did feel remorse for Killing Yoichi, and we know he killed Yoichi cause it's been stated All for One killed all the past user except for the forth. Considering this is the first time we've every seen All for One cry, it's pretty safe to assume All for One, for how messed up it was, did love his brother.

What interesting here is that All for One is showing cold anger, he's crying but his face is completely stoic, and even when a bullet was aimed at his head he barely reacted. He basically shut himself down, his normal shading around his eye is around his lower face, so we can only see he's eyes. This is the closet we have ever gotten to All For One being humanised in some way.

Ironically here All for One reminds me a little of how Izuku was looking/acting during the Villain hunt arc, clearly upset but shutting down all other emotions so he was emotionless. Which is interesting cause it means AFO was trying to get Izuku to act like him when he lost Yoichi, which explains why Izuku was starting to look like a villain more specifically like a demon.

All for One was literally turning Izuku into an earlier version of himself because he knows that the version of himself that lost.

I make a longer meta on how Izuku is a "good" version of All for One and how Tomura is an "evil" version of Yoichi later, but TLDR I think AFO plan is to recreate the battle between his brother and himself but switching the roles so that he wins the battle instead.
