Internet, I am a queer researcher of queer health and I have something to say.
A few weeks back, a study went viral about the relationship between marriage equality policy and queer teen suicide rates, and a lot of people reacted thusly: “queer mental health is better when we’re not discriminated against! BREAKING: SKY IS BLUE, WATER IS WET”
This happens a lot. People see research about a thing ~Everyone Already Knows~ and they mock it. Now I want to make two things really clear:
1. Everyone does not already know.
2. This shit can lose these projects their funding.
Did you know that media coverage is a crucial factor in funding allocation? When we submit our application for grant renewal, we have to provide a list of news articles about our research so they can decide whether the public cares enough about us to let us keep doing our work. And most research doesn’t get all that much coverage, so individual reactions can really matter. If the primary reaction to our publications is eyerolling, we legitimately might not be able to continue.
I’ve seen some frustration from people who believe this research funding would be better put to use “actually helping” the affected populations instead of–I don’t know, pinning them under microscopes or whatever it is they think we do. But funding for policy initiatives is driven by research. I know you wish politicians would listen to individual voices telling them where the problems are, but that’s honestly not a smart way to direct limited resources. We need solid evidence. And a lot of the areas that need the most attention aren’t obvious–who knew bisexual people are at a much higher risk for physical and mental health disparities than gay and lesbian people? Who would have guessed that transgender folks are more likely than any other group (including straight people) to be military veterans, but overwhelmingly don’t claim their benefits? I’m sure some people noticed these patterns, but they definitely weren’t common knowledge within the queer communities I’ve grown up around, and those findings are leading to direct action as we speak.
I get that it can be frustrating to feel like your identity is being reduced to facts and figures for the benefit of red tape. But trust me, the researchers aren’t your enemy here. Most of us are queer too. All of us are just as frustrated by this crap as you are. We are doing our best, and I swear to you this work really is making a difference. Please don’t sabotage it.
I have nothing more to say in way of explanation except self indulgence which in turn explains why I feel a bit silly about this one, sorry :D
ERASE the plot of the whole series from your minds. they’re living a calm regular life and have their own jayviks to obsess over.
Recently, We've all been crushed by the horrible news of 'Dead Boy Detective Agency's Cancellation, and rightfully so! In the server I host, we've come up with a plan to figure out our next steps moving forward and to see if we have a real chance at campaigning for the show! At the moment, we're going to be selecting a user as a representative to reach out to Beth & Steve and ask if there's a real chance for us to be able to campaign or if hope is lost. We'll be sharing the link to the tweet here and in other DBDA servers so we can get it boosted as much as possible. Its the hopes that the retweets and @'s will gain their attention and we can have our questions answered. If our response is silence, we'll be going with plan B which includes having a mass group of people send the same message in hopes that it'll break through some of the noise!
We'd like to add that if this DOES work and we're told that we have a chance at successfully campaigning for DBDA; there will likely be fundraising and other events involved. Please stay tuned for my reblog of this post (which i'll pin to my blog) of the link to the tweet so you can aid us in this effort and join our fight to save this show!
-And a healthy reminder for everyone's sanity; there may *not* be a chance at being able to campaign for the show but this is our first step in finding out!
Remember to keep tagging with #save dead boy detectives
P.S. Even if we don’t get all that we hope for; this fandom has created such a warm and fun community with so many amazing creatives and we hope that you all will continue to create and inspire each other with your beautiful works and events!💜
this went up on cn’s instagram yesterday and i can’t believe it. seeing a major kid’s network teaching kids what nonbinary pronouns are, and that they’re valid, makes me so happy you have no idea
guys this is my first time uploading a video so be gentle
I don’t really think I’m that good at anatomy (or females) but this is quite a popular request so… I’m making a tutorial, and this is the part to show you what NOT to do with your fellow humans. More coming… eventually.
I suck at breast variations, but I try; see this page for awesome references: x
I never see anyone talking about how kids can abuse adults though.Â
Growing up I saw a lot of adult teachers get bullied by students and it sucked. They would purposely push them to their breaking point until they exploded, yelled, cursed, threw desks, and the ones who didn’t have that kind of reaction would just quit or end up fired because the kids would start rumors. One was because our new math teacher was effeminate so the guys thought “obviously this guy is gay and he’s after our dicks” and if he was ever nice to a male student (which… he was nice and friendly with EVERYONE and was the best teacher we’d had that year) they would start whispering behind me, “yo, look at that, did you see that? He’s flirting with his male students, that’s nasty” and so they made trouble for him.Â
My mother worked at a Discovery Zone type place when I was little and she would come home and break down crying because groups of little boys would call her names, call her stupid her whole shift.
I had friends in childhood who absolutely abused their parents. They were relentless and mean and hacked them into submission and it made for a lot of awkward moments when I would hang with them, because I couldn’t do anything since… they were my abuser too.
Just because you’re a minor doesn’t mean knives you throw are not sharp and won’t hit someone. The fact that so many kids on this site use their age as a weapon, as a way to say “but nothing I do has any impact because I have no social power” is SCARY and we need to try to make people aware of this kind of stuff from a young age because most people who are like that don’t really realize it and they need guidance and rehabilitation so the cycle can stop. Because those people grow up and have kids and do it to their kids and they don’t learn that it’s not normal or okay, that they cannot deny reality by controlling the people around them.Â
But sometimes it isn’t always that way, some of those parents were so nice and kind and I considered like family, and they just had absolute evil villains for kids.Â
Check in with yourselves, guys. Especially right now. There’s a lot of upsetting stuff being shoved in our faces all the time and it makes it hard not to get tunnel vision when our emotions get out of control, especially with the pressure to perform by a lot of social circles on tumblr. And if you’re young and a lot of this is new, pace yourself, you’re learning, and you need to be open to the idea of learning more and know that us being adults doesn’t mean we’re just out of touch boring old farts who don’t know anything. We’ve lived things and we have experience and when we say to you that it’s not okay to tell people who like things you do not like to kill themselves, we’re not “apologists”… we’re the survivors too.Â
And here we meet at a crossroads. Three ways to leave but nowhere to go.
