That's an awesome idea OP! Now I'm thinking about what lies Uther might have told Arthur about warlocks that Arthur would believe even after a magic reveal. Uther would have to come up with something to justify to his citizens killing any small child that happened to be born with magic, so he probably spread propaganda about how all warlocks would grow into soul-eating monsters to fuel their powers as they got older, and that was why they needed to kill the younger ones while they still could.

So after a magic reveal, Arthur would genuinely believe that Merlin's not only a powerful sorcerer, but also a soul-eating monster straight out of the most horrific bedtime stories Uther told him as a child.

I'll probably flesh this out a bit later!

BBC Merlin AU where Uther told Arthur throughout his childhood horrendous stories of magical creatures so Arthur would grow up to be wary of magic but he mostly made up shit like telling Arthur that the tooth fairy comes at night to rip out his teeth if he doesn’t clean them properly which sends Arthur into distress when they actually fall out. Or that Unicorns are the most vicious predatory creature and has to be killed on sight because they lure virgins, male and female, into the forest to feast on them (mostly children).

When Merlin comes to Camelot and all the magical threats are happening Arthur is like ‘Ah, yes. I know this. My father told me about it. It’s such and such does this/that’ what gives Gaius constant headaches because he can’t say that the King had lied to Arthur.

First season Merlin doesn’t questions Arthur’s expertise at first but has more doubts later on until Arthur misidentifies the questing beast and gets himself almost killed. After that Merlin is fed up with Arthur identifying magical creatures. But on a few rare occasions it goes like this:

Arthur: I think it’s a [doubtful magical creature]!

Merlin: Is it another one of your Father’s made up monsters?(*)

Arthur: Don’t speak of your king in such manner!

Gaius: Actually, [doubtful magical creature] exist.

Arthur: Ah-HAH!

Merlin: 🙄

Gaius: But it is absolutely not what you’ve described it to be.

Merlin: Ah-HAH!

Arthur: 😑

(*the way Uther talks about them they are no more than monsters)

Headcanon that Geoffrey of Monmouth isn’t actually a thicc sir, he just learned to keep his most important books strapped to him at all times in case Uther gets the urge for another book burning. Boy’s glutes are two history of magic tomes and they’re rock hard.

digital painting of bbc merlin's arthur pendragon. he's over a dark blue background, and the painting is in blues and purples with pink highlights. we see his face in three quarters, he's slightly leaning down. he's wearing armor and chainmail. the pink light that's cast is harsh, so half his face is in dark blue shadow, like the rest of the front of his body

A silly short Merlin au inspired by that one post where Merlin is put on trial in the blorbo court:

An evil sorcerer manages to capture Arthur, Merlin, and the knights as revenge for what Camelot did to the druids. However, this sorcerer is a devout follower of the old gods, so he decides to put Arthur on trial for his crimes against magic to let the gods pass judgement on him. After all, Emrys would surely show no mercy towards the son of the tyrant who burned Emrys's temples and slaughtered his worshippers.

So the sorcerer performs the ritual to summon Emrys, who appears looking like an eldritch monstrosity. It's a good thing everyone's too distracted by the glowing, incomprehensible god in front of them to notice that Merlin's soul has just been forcefully yanked from his body.

Of course, Arthur and the knights are terrified. They're bound, weaponless, and their hindbrains are telling them to run away now! The sorcerer, meanwhile, is giddy. He welcomes Emrys and presents Arthur to him, inviting him to judge the son of the butcher king as he sees fit.

Merlin, at this point, is just pissed. Getting one's soul yanked out from you body isn't exactly a pleasant experience! And now this nuisance who just kidnapped all of them was demanding that he kill Arthur!

But Merlin decides to play along for a bit, just to make this sorcerer suffer for his idiotic choice in trying to kill Arthur. So, Merlin replies, "he is innocent."

The entire room falls silent. Everyone looks at him in shock, but perhaps no one looked as shocked as Arthur. The beat of silence passed quickly though, as the sorcerer starting yelling.

"What?! How can that be true? Lord Emrys, you surely must know of this man's crimes against magic, against your people! He must be punished!"

"I am the judge here, aren't I? I say that he is innocent. You, on the other hand, are not."

Emrys then wastes no time in striking the fool down with lightning. Honestly, who did he think he was, making such demands? Arthur was Emrys's favorite mortal, he could do no wrong in Emrys's eyes!

TL;DR:

Arthur gets put on trial for crimes against magic, but Merlin declares him innocent because Arthur is his favorite little guy!

"I want you to always be you." Do you think... now here me out... Arthur accidentally made merlin immortal with that one saying. Like of course he meant it as don't let my death change who you are but... the possibility of by him saying this it caused merlin to accidentally make himself immortal.? Idk tell me what yall think.

That'd actually be such a great magic reveal, because Merlin would 100% be like "go ahead and tell someone, no one will believe you."

And Audrey would hate him all the more, both for making her look like a madwoman if she (rightfully) accuses him of stealing her cooked chickens using magic and for being fully capable of making her life so much easier by simply making Arthur's food with magic but refusing to.

I love it!

*Holds up megaphone* YESSSSSSS!!!!! I LOVE IT!!

I love stories where Camelot has preconceived notions of Emrys that were leftover from the purge! It has so much potential! Angst, humor, misunderstandings, self-reflection, it has it all! I wish more fics would explore it.

(This also reminds me of an au idea that's been sitting in my drafts for months. I should probably finish that one!)

One of the first prophecies in Albion was of Emrys and the Once and Future King. Every Seer in the realm had similar visions of the two powerful, glorious beings that would one day walk the earth. The prophecies remained prophecies for a few centuries before it began to grow into a fairytale story. Children were told stories of Emrys and the Once and Future King that would one day bring peace to Albion. Then it grew more and more as a story that people began to forget it was once a prophecy. When Uther began his Purge, he changed the story he himself had grown up hearing. He made Emrys out to be a creature of pure evil. If Emrys was magic incarnate, he couldn’t be anything other than evil. Children still heard of Emrys after the Purge, but he was a boogeyman, a villain that would snatch disobeying children from their homes and feast of them in the woods.

Arthur grew up hearing tales of the horrible, fearsome Emrys. Uther used Emrys as a tool to get Arthur to behave and be a perfect prince. Merlin heard of the fairytale version of Emrys from his mother. The Druids continued to worship Emrys as their deity but people thought them mad, he’s nothing more than a character in a story, but the Druids never forgot the prophecy. And with their Sight, their ability to recognize Emrys on sight, Uther lumped Druids in with the evilness he had slapped on Emrys’ name. He said the Druids performed sacrifices and rituals in Emrys’ name to try and conjure the demon to steal children’s souls.

Anyways, post-magic reveal Mordred calls Merlin Emrys and Arthur just freezes bc he Knows that Mordred is a Druid, and he Knows that Druids worship Emrys and would not take his name in vain or call someone else the name of their deity, and he was brought up hearing stories of Emrys being a demon, pure evil. So he just kinda. Looks. At Merlin who just grumbles about being called that but responds as if it’s normal and Arthur is a bit terrified. He’s like “You’re Emrys?” To Merlin who shrugs and is like “I guess” (unaware of the horrifying stories Uther spun of Emrys, only knowing what his mother and Kilgharrah said and how the Druids worship him).

The other knights have heard of the Demon Emrys except Percival who grew up in Druid camps but doesn’t have their Sight so he didn’t know Merlin was Emrys until right now. Gwaine laughing a little uncomfortably to break the tension and is like “So…taste any good children lately?” Arthur slaps him up back the head. Merlin just looks disgusted and confused. Mordred and Percival are offended on his behalf. Lancelot is amused by it all and sits back to watch the chaos. Leon and Elyan are shaking their heads at Gwaine’s stupidity. Why the hell would he say something like that to a DEMON????
