What Does Shaensigin's Voice Sound Like In Human Tongue? Is She Better At Speaking Spider-paw Words Or

What does Shaensigin's voice sound like in human tongue? Is she better at speaking spider-paw words or the language of two-toes? And what is her natural tongue/sounds, if any?

Shaensigin is very good at spiderpaw talk and something of a mimic. In a time long past, she and Ilganyag had a game they’d play, where they’d start with one word, and go back and forth repeating it, adding a new word of their own every round. Whoever couldn’t repeat the entire string of words first lost the game.

Shaensigin kept up with the bird pretty well.

More impressively, Shaensigin helped the Inak create their language. She’s not only good at it, but responsible for large parts of it. Of all the senet beast gods the two-toes have and still do worship, she has the longest history with them.

Humans can’t speak the two-toe tongue; we can’t make the right sounds. I’m not even going to try and type them out, but there are clicky knocks they make in their snouts, a growled consonant, and little gruffs :3 When I imagine Ruffles squeakily gruffling to her nanna I wish to slightly die.

I didn't think Duane was so misogenistic ;_; since he, in the end, tolerated his daughter learning pymary.

I think we’re fooling ourselves a bit if we don’t acknowledge he’s something of a misogynist. The challenge with Duane and with many of the characters in our cast is that they are inescapably marked by the cultures they grew up in. Just as we ALL are. We ALL have biases within us that we have to acknowledge and consciously overcome. There is no pure and unblemished person. It’s not possible in this bitch of a world.

Duane relenting that night and agreeing to teach Mikaila pymary was a battle - fought and successfully won - against his own misogyny. It was a good thing. But it was not a moment when a light switch flipped and he was suddenly a paragon of gender equality. He’ll keep struggling daily with his biases the same way we all do.

Everyone around you has biases. You can write people off because of them, or you learn to love in spite of them and help them understand more and grow. I do this with Duane the same way I have to do it with my dad and a lot of other people in my life. It’s the most difficult thing.

At first hearing that Duane was at any point in his life anything other than a bookish, pedantic wizard nerd caught me off guard, but then you think of all the times he ends up punching people and begin to wonder if there’s more ‘bully’ left in him than he’d care to admit

Wait, what was the divine revelation that made Duane pursue priesthood? Or will it come up in the comic later?

I don’t know if it’ll ever come up in the comic, and Duane’s always been kind of embarrassed to speak of it aloud because it makes him feel like one of those backwoods zealots that preaches anecdotes from a stump, but yeah, he had an Experience when he was a kid. Ssaelism is a very rational faith. It doesn’t encourage you to go around saying Ssael appeared to you in a vision and told you where you left your lucky kedis foot. If you tell your priest that Ssael speaks to you he’ll roll his eyes and suggest you stop mixing beer and wine.

Anyway, Duane was badly injured in a street accident (it was totally Lemuel’s fault, he was being a little shit) and very nearly didn’t make it. Duane was a very rambunctious kid - some might say a bully - and though his grandfather was teaching him pymary Duane tended to use it like, well, Sette might. To make his brother and their peers miserable. After he was hurt he was bedbound for a few months and his interests abruptly turned bookish. At the same time, frigging Sonum Ssael started talking to him in the back of his head, saying he needed to straighten the hell up.

Even after he recovered Duane was hobbling for a year and never took up his old role of neighbourhood bully. Instead he began studying his grandfather’s books, reading everything Ssael ever wrote, and spending way too much time in the ghers library. He shocked his grandfather by beginning to beat him in their play-duels, and shocked his dad by humbly requesting to attend seminary and become a cleric instead of becoming his apprentice in their family print shop.

Duane always heard Ssael with startling clarity in his prayers. That voice went away after his bad night in the snow.

What's the difference in pronunciations between the Ss in Ssael and the S in Soud? Are they, perhaps, pronounced the same, but spelled so as an artefact from Old Tainish? What about the Mm in Mmatont- how's that pronounced?

Double S is a z. Double m is an m with a stop after, treat the mm like its own syllable. So it’s mm-atont. Like, yum, delicious traitors. Mm-atont.

Double n works the same. ssh- is the same. Double L I borrowed from Spanish, and is an english y, with the interesting New Tainish tweak of becoming a separate syllable if it’s at the end of a word. So sshupall (friend) is pronounced probably nothing like you’d imagine! It’s four syllables. ssh-oo-pah-yeh.

Originally I considered using more apostrophes and diacritics in Tainish but fantasy languages are always tattooed up with marks like eighty year old bikers. If French can have utterly unintuitive orthography, so can Tainish, by gum.

If I'm reading this page correctly, it's the next morning and Ruffles is coming to wake Duane up. I'm curious if Duane was self-aware in the khert during the night or if he was stuck in his memories the whole time?

You read it correctly. I wanted to try doing a page with just sound effects and no dialogue, I’m glad it reads okay <3

Duane was stuck in memories all night. In the script I had a cut-away to him in the khert really mired in his worse days to hammer home the darkness of his present state, but it got chopped. I think at this point we’ve got the idea anyway :)

Hey Netizens! I'm Not Sure How Many People Are Aware, But Youtube's Been Slowly Rolling Out A New Anti-adblock

hey netizens! i'm not sure how many people are aware, but youtube's been slowly rolling out a new anti-adblock policy that can't be bypassed with the usual software like uBlock Origin and Pi-Hole out of the gate

BUT, if you're a uBlock Origin user (or use an adblocker with a similar cosmetics modifier), you can add these commands in the uBlock dashboard (under My Filters) to get rid of it!

youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)

reblog to help keep the internet less annoying and to tell corporations that try shit like this to go fuck themselves <3

What do Crescian and Aldish nationalists see as the end-goal of their war? I imagine Alds want to spread the dammakhert as far south as possible and maybe abolish the monarchy and Crescians want to destroy the dammakhert and Ssaelism.

It’s varied over the centuries, but you have listed the major angles that have driven them both in the past.

At present, Cresce is ostensibly in a defensive position, claiming that Alderode struck first and is occupying one of their bordertowns. Alderode claims that it is merely retaliating for Cresce sending spies and militants (surveyors) over the border, and that it will take a piece of Cresce into itself to send a message.

The Aldish deep state has other reasons for its international aggression however, just as Cresce probably is hiding something itself. This’ll all come out in the next few chapters.
