Something I find interesting is how so many of my most popular posts involve “shipping” observation/speculation of some sort. I’m not sure if that’s a testament to the fandom (most likely) or to me being a Blood player (possibly) or both, but it amuses me.
In the past year, Homestuck has ended and the credits have rolled. Now we have Hiveswap coming soon and a possible epilogue to look forward to. Hopefully both will provide answers to many important questions that still remain.
As always, thanks for your support (and patience), everyone! Here’s to another year!
The 12 Aspects all mean significantly more than their literal meanings. Supposedly, collectively, they encompass all of reality.
Here are some keywords that can be used as substitutions for the actual Aspect names. Not only are they useful for understanding the Aspects themselves, but they're also useful for classpecting purposes, for understanding the meaning of a Hero Title.
When paired with my Classes Chart, these Aspect keywords provide broad, basic, simplified information on what a particular role might do.
Existence
Space physicality, creation, (trans)formation, matter, beginnings, (re)birth, concreteness
Time timing, destruction, endings, inevitability, death, abstractness, meta
Knowledge
Light information, importance, relevance, fortune, luck, agency, visibility, clarity
Void nothingness, lack, irrelevance, submission, misfortune, unknown, obfuscation, invisibility, mystery, secrets, shadow
Perception
Hope belief, possibility, options, wish, realness, imagination, ideas, conception, sexuality
Rage fear, anger, lack of options, fakeness
Psyche
Heart soul, inner self, emotion, desire, love, will, motivation, passion
Mind thought, reason, logic, decision, choice, façade, outer self
Drive
Breath wind, (mis/re)direction, freedom, escape, quest, detachment, disconnection, distance, flight
Blood bonds, relationships, pacts, responsibility, duty, loyalty, unity, attachment, connection, groundedness
Energy
Life life force, energy, growth, power, persistence, wealth, boldness, enthusiasm, efficacy
Doom sacrifice, rules, limits, boundaries, decay, restraint, consequences, punishment
Edit 2/21/15: Added keywords to Space, Time, Hope, Breath, and Blood. Changed "self" to "inner self" for Heart (for clarification).
For anyone interested to know more about me, I finally got around to making an About Me page on my personal/reblog blog. Not a whole lot there, but at least it’s something.
Reflection on the 5/13/15 update with potential strategies, considerations, and predictions.
The best team to face the Becs would ironically be the "least important/effective" characters: Tavros, Jaspers, and the Mayor---plus Jade and GCat.
Jaspers could be a great distraction for them because cat. Actually, there’s probably even two of them around.
Tavros could use his communing abilities to control the Becs, plus potentially GCat to use as a distraction.
The Mayor would probably be safe because PM is his friend. He’s destined to face Bec Noir, anyway.
Jade, either asleep or awake, would occupy the Becs' attention, be safe from them (and protected by them!), and has the same First Guardian abilities.
As long as the Condesce is sufficiently distracted, they'd all be good.
Jack English vs. Dirk, Dave, and possibly surprise Davesprite would make a nice callback to when Bro and Davesprite fought against Jack on LOWAS. Remember how the final prototyping gave him First Guardian powers, which turned the tide of battle?
What if that happens with Jack English, such as obtaining the golden cuestaff and that very same ring? LOWAS (I assume it’s there now) is one of the closest planets to Jack English, too, so the battle could occur in the very same spot!
If Davesprite is around, he risks being influenced by the Condesce like Jade, since he’s part bird.
The idea of Karkat facing his old frienemy Spades Slick is delicious. If anyone can convince Slick to form an alliance, it's Karkat.
Any of the trolls facing the Condesce is probably dangerous because of her manipulation powers. That mostly just leaves the kids.
Nannasprite's probably around. She'd be great as part of the healing team, since she's alt!Jane and has healing abilities, too.
If there’s an extra Nannasprite who tagged along on LOWAS, even better.
Remember Casey's undead army on LOMAX? That has potential to show up again, too. If the Condesce uses her powers to control them, BAD NEWS. If not, allies ahoy! I imagine the golden battleship is still there, too, since Aranea wasn't around to move it; they could use that, as well.
During the fracas, Gamzee will probably escape. (Don't turn your back on the body!) Plus, he most certainly will travel back in time to at least give Lil Cal to CD to create Jack English in the first place. That has to happen somehow, since Vriska apparently didn’t do it. Gamzee might also prototype the final sprite. Who knows what else he'll do?
Vriska is leaving, yes. My guess is to raise the Cherubs, but we really don't know. (She's already hijacked Gamzee's role for practically everything else, plus she has other Gamzee parallels.) What if she returns in time to give the final blow to the Condesce, being the one to officially kill her? It'd mirror her dealing the final blow to the Black King of their session, plus... She'd likely inherit Lord English's curse. Lord English has already been manipulating her and using her to his advantage anyway; the curse would just make it official.
your method of determining classpects is actually really interesting and useful. i had thought i was a mage of mind for a long time, but then i did this (and of course did some more research on my possible titles) and discovered i fit more as an heir of time! i still have the mage in there since my opposite is mage of space. it works really well!
Classpect Profile? Thanks! I’m glad it helped you! :]
Remember when John said 'are you trying to fix your romance problems' while following Terezi's list maybe starting a blackrom with him is what was meant by that.
Heheheh, yep. I had the same thought.
In fact, if my double retcon theory holds any water, and eventually John lets Vriska die, it could be an interesting way to “fix” Terezi’s relationship problems with Gamzee (without Vriska being there). Her caliginous feelings could shift focus from Gamzee to John instead, thus not leaving her a total wreck by the end of the meteor trip.
This can’t be coincidence.
Okay, John's note that "it was gamzee," on the most obvious level, means Gamzee is responsible Nepeta's murder, not Vriska, whom Gamzee is framing and Terezi suspects.
But what if there's a deeper meaning to the message?
What if John inadvertently answered his own (and likely poor, confused Terezi's) question?:
"you don't need him."
Who's "him"?
"it was gamzee you idiot!!!"
By pairing together these two seemingly disconnected messages from John, maybe it'll plant the idea in Terezi's mind that Gamzee is the one she doesn't need. ...Unintentionally, at least on John's end. Granted, she probably won't even make this connection until much later, perhaps after more messages, but hey.
Inception, Egbert style.
Remember after the Trickster arc (A6A5A2), how the story returns to A6A5A1? Caliborn yells at Hussie for going "BACKWARDS BY AN 'ACT'." He thinks the Trickster shenanigans were "erased," to which Hussie responds:
What are you talking about? I didn't erase it. It was still a thing that happened. Do you really think I have the power to make something unhappen?? I would have to be a wizard to do that.
Well, it turns out someone does have that power:
Which means John Egbert is a wizard.
John already has plenty of wizard allusions:
DISREGARD THE UNIMPORTANT MALE GHOST BEHIND THE CURTAIN.
An obvious reference to the Wizard of Oz saying, "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain."
JOHN: let's all go see a big pompous wizard to solve all of our problems.
JOHN: we didn't realize it at the time, but there were still a bunch of problems waiting to happen. [...] JOHN: but don't worry, i'm working to overcome all those problems right now. JOHN: that's why i'm here!
Frigglish bothered his beard, as if unkinking a hitch in a long silk windsock. [...] As a matter of fact, his cadre of fellow wizards were all putting similar moves on their beards as well.
Thanks to John's god tier hood (wind powers help, too), others (mostly Roxy) continually mention windsocks with reference to John.
ROXY: im all ears johnny windsock
Even the Magician's Hat John wears as part of his "Clever Disguise" and the Bunny Sassacre Fedora---one of the first items he alchemizes---are wizardly.
One of the very first snippets of information we learn about John is that he's "an aspiring AMATEUR MAGICIAN." While it appears to mean a magician in the sense of an "entertainer who is skilled in producing illusion by sleight of hand, deceptive devices, etc.," a magician is also a "person who is skilled in magic" or a "sorcerer"---in other words, a wizard. Couldn't it mean both?
If Heir is indeed the passive counterpart to Witch, both classes who "change, manipulate, and control (with/through) their aspect"---which I like to call the Magician Classes---wouldn't that make the Heir of Breath a magician or wizard, anyway?
John and others continually refer to John and his abilities as "magic":
EB: everyone i know is turning magic, it's ridiculous. EB: including me! i'm magic now.
("Everyone" specifically alluding to Jade and Rose, an actual Witch and a Seer with the inclination toward Witch inversion.)
John calls his retcon abilities "weird retcon magic," and describes it as "some kind of surreal, history altering... reality hopping... magic power.” Roxy calls it “magic ‘fix literally everything' powers.”
Although John aspires to become a SKILLED MAGICIAN and a CUNNING PRANKSTER, he is “neither of these things” for most of the story.
At first, John has no control over his magic powers (first wind, then space-time jumping retcon abilities). However, eventually he learns and masters his powers, becoming a SKILLED MAGICIAN.
JOHN: i've noticed whenever i learn to do new things with my powers, it's usually in response to something. like something important that has to be done.
JOHN: i learned how to turn into wind and swoosh around about a year ago. [...] JOHN: i thought for sure i was a goner, when suddenly i poofed away from his tentacly grasp like houdini's slippery ghost. later i rematerialized to seize the tactical advantage!
JADE: he dispersed every drop throughout existence
JADE: leaving a little mark for anyone who might notice, signifying his final mastery over his confining reality
Thanks to his powers and Terezi's scarf instructions, John becomes a CUNNING PRANKSTER, as well.
JOHN: i am like the ultimate prankster now... nanna would be so proud!
Previously, John was neither a skilled magician nor a cunning prankster. Now he is both.
John, a magician, the wizard with the “power to make something unhappen."
Bonus points for shipping fodder: Roxy LOVES wizards.
John = Wizard. CONFIRMED.
BladekindEyewear has a theory that there will be a third Scratch, one in Caliborn’s session. While I’m not completely sold on it being necessary (and I disagree on the events that will play out if it happens), thematically, a Third Scratch makes sense, and evidence does support it.
Three scratches across Gamzee’s face:
Dave’s game glitching, making it unplayable and unwinnable:
Time to reset for the third time this hour.
> Dave: Reset.
So, if a third Scratch will indeed occur, what can we extrapolate?
We know a Scratch Construct is different between sessions.
It will always be an edifice of similarly cryptic design, located on the planet that is home to the Hero of Time. Its environment dictates the nature of its construction.
The Trolls’ construct is the Cardinal Movement, which looks similar to Aradia’s time machine music boxes. It also reflects the Land of Quartz and Melody, Aradia’s planet. Damara must have the same (or similar) planet as Aradia.
The Kids’ construct is the Beat Mesa, which matches Dave’s emblem and his time tables. It also fits with the gears and tech theme of his planet.
That just leaves Caliborn, the Time player of the third session. And what’s the theme not of his planet, but his entire session and character? Billiards.
Caliborn’s session includes a planet representing each pool ball. Notoriously missing is a Cue Ball planet.
What if Caliborn’s Scratch Construct is an entire Cue Ball planet, and we haven’t seen it yet? Or seen it in its final form, anyway. Rather than being ON his planet, it IS a planet.
Two likely candidates are Caliborn’s planet (Earth), or the Land of Heat and Clockwork, Dave’s planet.
(Personally, I love the idea of LOHAC, and its transformation resembling a cue ball.)
During a typical Scratch, once the construct’s surface is scratched, it will head toward Skaia.
Except Caliborn’s session no longer has a Skaia. However, recall Skaia transformed into a black hole. The black hole Caliborn uses to sink the pool ball planets!
I predict Caliborn’s Scratch will involve scratching the surface of a Cue Ball planet and then sinking it into the black hole that was formerly Skaia. In billiards, pocketing the cue ball is called a scratch. How perfect is that?
TT: This terminology can be very literal sometimes.
What do else do we know about Scratches?
Its power is dangerous, and is meant to be utilized only in emergencies such as yours. TT: You mean, in sessions where victory is no longer possible? Yes. […] TT: Then, it's like a panic button for the players to push once they realize the cause is lost.
Only in this case, replace “session” with “reality.” It sounds like this could describe the situation the heroes are in, with Lord English wreaking havoc throughout Paradox Space. An even greater emergency would be after Vriska begins the process of the Green Sun’s destruction, which has the potential to lead to the Big Crunch of Paradox Space.
Within the context of Rose and Doc Scratch’s exchange, “victory” means ability to successfully create a new universe, which is the goal of a typical session. However, Caliborn’s session is unique and extreme—a dead session. Its goal isn’t to create a new universe. In all likelihood, it has some connection with all of Space-Time, all of reality itself. A Scratch for a dead session would be employed for a different, more extreme reason.
TT: What exactly does the Scratch do, then? It resets the game. […] The release of temporal energy will be quite massive. This is a hard reset. It will reboot the conditions in your universe well before you began playing the game. You will have lived different lives after the reset. The different initial conditions will ideally lead to a more favorable scenario in the new session. Unfortunately, you will have no memory of anything that has happened in the session you are in now. TT: What will happen to us? Everyone in this session now? You will all cease to exist completely if you remain here during the Scratch.
Now, all this is true of typical null sessions. If scratching a null session resets the universe, perhaps scratching a dead session—Caliborn’s session—resets REALITY.
Instead of resetting the cherubs’ universe and which cherub plays, I think the third scratch will reset all of Paradox Space, all of reality, producing an alternate reality. A new reality perhaps ruled by a Pink Sun instead of the Green Sun.
Just as the kids escaped their Scratch and entered the new, reset instance of Earth’s universe—the Alpha kids’ session—through the window, the heroes will have to find a way to escape the third Scratch (and the Big Crunch) and enter a new, reset instance of Paradox Space.
While simultaneously destroying reality, the massive black hole created from the Green Sun’s destruction could very well be their escape route, like the hole in the window.
UU: and while the emerald eye of this storm is fixed in the abyss forever UU: today yoU are poised to escape its scowl once and for all. UU: by skaias gUiding light, yoU may leave behind its tUrning arms of bright coloUrs and mayhem, and secUre peace for yoUr cosmic progeny for all dUration.
A third Scratch, the destruction of reality, a black hole escape route, and the creation of a Pink Sun would make absolutely lovely parallels to the events of [S]: Cascade. It works.
