I will never stop saying that the LOV members are nothing more than a bunch of beginners villains artificially inflated to stay as permanent main villains.
The most frustrating part about this is how the only way Horikoshi could make this work is at expense of better villains with way more potential from the get go.
Stain, Overhaul, Nine, the MLA, all these villains with better concepts are sacrificed as lambs to make the LOV "develop" into better villains, which is totally false because they only get away from countless impossible situations thanks to an absurd degree of plot armor. Or how the fuck Toga being a teen with a knife can represent a problem to freaking Deku of all persons?
Another example of how Horikoshi struggled to keep every active lov member relevant is how Spinner in the final arc get this forced af rivalry with Shoji about the mutant subplot, an idea that always was barely developed in the series and suddlenly becames a big deal despite Spinner never give a fuck about other mutants, and neither Shoji did.
Ironic how Horikoshi stated that his favorite Jujutsu Kaisen villain is Mahito, for obvious reasons as he's basically Shigaraki 2.0. EXCEPT by the fact Gege understood that keep Mahito in the story more than necessary would have been a slog and he killed him in a very satisfying way.
Horikoshi could've taken notes and learn that the LOV members shouldn't have made into the final battle and their arcs would be better ended much sooner, while the other villains with more potential should stay longer.
Imo the League of Villains should have never existed from the main story of MHA. They were utterly unbalanced and were so flawed that no attempt of fixing could fix them.
I get where your coming from. I
I honestly believe the LOV really needed was time to grow away from the spotlight.
Think of the LOV as leftover pizza (I know, just stick with me for a minute)
Too long in the microwave/oven/pan and it tastes like hardback, too little and it becomes soggy muddled. There's a very specific way you need to do things and that's by not overthinking it.
Hori kept the microwave on too long and the LOV's potential evaporated.
From what I can tell, MHA worked best when it had a 'Villain of the week's type of thing going on.
This was most prominent and best set up with Stain, Stain's character/arc not only expanded the world of MHA but also brought up deeper questions about Hero society
What's most important here is that Stain didn't overstay his welcome. He rolled in, made every panel count and then went out like a champ. Affecting the protagonist and those around him.
He had an impact that's felt throughout the rest of the series (There is no Internship Arc in Ba Sing Se) not inspite of his short lived presence but because of it.
At some point, Hori lost this concept and the plot went with it.
I think the main problem with the LOV started after Kamino. Before this, every member has solid, or at least tangible ideals.
The Vanguard Action Squad was the LOV at it's most raw, not perfect but functional. They felt like people, when Magne stops Spinner from pursuing Midoriya, it feels real for the world.
Simply put the LOV (much like 1A) worked best as individuals, differing worldviews and all.
So when Hori robbed the LOV of their autonomy by practically wrangling them to Shigaraki, it in turn killed the LOV, because now nothing was individual about them.
If you want an example, how about Magne's death. Her last words are the very last time anyone in the LOV asserts any belief besides Shigaraki's own.
After this the LOV barely give any resistance to Shigaraki's plans no matter how short sighted or convoluted.
Kurogiri is outright sacrificed by the narrative so that Shigaraki finally has to step up.
Shigaraki's reaction to Toga's rage and grief follwing Magne's death can be amounted to: "Trust me bro, we're doing this for us bro, please believe me bro."
It's absurd.
As for being flawed, I'll assume you mean their motives.
What needs to be understood is that the LOV (Pre Kamino) and the PLF (Post Kamino) are not the same characters
Flanderisation is the phenomenon of a characters worst traits being exacerbated over a period of time until said character is unrecognizable from their original self.
This is what Hori did the LOV and he did this intentionally.
At some point he realized that the Villains actually had more of a point than the heroes, this likely occured after the MVA arc when fans began rooting for the LOV.
To counter this Hori sabotaged multiple characters and plots in a desperate attempt to justify his woolies and unfortunately for everyone who's isn't an abuser-stan (Enji and Bakuo). The rest of the cast and world suffered greatly.
What you ended up with are characters so detached from their origins that they might as well not even be the same characters at all.
There's an image somewhere that encapsulates this perfectly, it's a 4 panel comic with two stick figures (one black and one blue). If I ever find it or someone links it I'll be sure to upload it here
If you were to turn 9 and his squad into main series villains, how would you do so?
Tough question actually, because there's a lot of different things you can do with a group of characters like them.
And I don't want to make the classic "role swap" in which everything in the timeline is almost the same minus which characters fill X spot.
For Nine specifically, I would start his story right after Kamino and the defeat of AFO.
An idea I would like to play is he and Shigaraki could actually act as rivals of sorts when AFO is out of the picture (but he would still have a part on the story).
As both groups will start from the very bottom without much resources, and Nine will have his empty copy of the AFO quirk to fill with new quirks different than the canon, perhaps only keeping the more iconic ones as Hydra just because is so cool.
Actually the quest for find the ideal quirks and one that solves the cell degeneration would be an important part of Nine developement, rather than just happen offscreen.
As for what new quirks he could steal, that's not something I don't have very clear yet (so I accept suggestions) but one of them would be Dabi's blueflames. Lol I just want see Nine with epic blue flames.
...
Oh and an idea that always loved is that Nine needs another rival that isn't just Shigaraki, but someone else who is his direct opposite in terms of world view and ideology.
And that's no one else than Overhaul
Think about it, Nine and Kai are just the perfect foils for each other.
The concept of a quirk supremacist and an anti-quirk believer having a ideological (and literal) war for control the underworld and reform the world into their own view could be epic.
And for that to happen obviously we need to keep Kai as a recurring villain for most of the story. I would create a dynamic where a lot of villains groups will have internal battles while at the same time the heroes are another problem to deal.
But wait, you need soldiers for that to work.
And what best army for Nine than the one which literally believe in quirk supremacy?
Look I will die on the hill that MVA as a concept for an arc is literally made for Nine and his team.
The idea of Re-Destro wanting to contact a villain group that is getting more recognition and in the end they found common ground due beliefs fits way more with Nine than it does to Shigaraki.
I mean it's obvious, Nine is basically the living incarnation of all the ideals of the original Destro. If his descendant meet him he would instantly adore Nine.
...
So that's just a part of all my ideas.
I would like to better put them together into something more consistent. Need to work on it, perhaps some day I will make a story based on this rewrite idea.
Can you at least write a scene from this AU? Like Izuku and Yo in the ring, facing each other.
Oh sorry, but I don't really have the inspiration or the knowledge to write the scene.
I would like being able to do since the idea is interesting, but I should investigate boxing first.
Greek gods energy 🌩
Whoever decided it was a good idea to gift us with the image of AFO and Nine showing their perfect bodies, thanks to that person 🙏
I just want them to get back together in some way or another
So the wig idea still could work in this case, she would only need it to be white for match Gentle. And the classy Himura habit on being subtle as a baseball bat in to the head lol.I guess Mizunami got something of that not so subtle nature, but since he's not a bad person such nature would be for say good things to Izu without filter. He totally wouldn't be afraid of saying "what a nice ass!" lol.
...
Is fun how I like to make up reasons for my fav characters to be barefoot, as is something meaningful and not just an aesthetic choice (when Its possible at least).
For example I imagine Shindo loves to be barefoot when he trains because a passive effect of his vibration quirk is being able to feel the vibrations in the ground, like the earthbenders from Avatar. He can feel it anyway with shoes on, but being barefoot enhance the effect and makes him feel more connected to earth while feeling it's texture on his feet.
Nine also loves being barefoot because it is associated with a sense of terrenal freedom, which makes him happy and in peace especially during rains.
Mizunami also would just love put his feet on water, that's relaxing.
...
A lair for the Cider House gang? I bet it would be something like an abandoned warehouse, but rather than the cliche spooky lair of most villains, Mizu and his gang would just fill the place with neon lights, confy fornitures, arcade machines, all kind of TVs, game consoles, and other stuff they steal. And of course a lot of artistic graffity.
They don't live there of course, but it's a great place for chill between missions and such.
And now I need to think of a lot of domestic SeltzerBunny fluff since you mentioned the morning kiss.
I feel I'm always talking about this ship and Cinder and I thank you for that. I do have a question: does the media follow the cinder's gang?
I ask this bc I do want to give Izumi notoriety. Ofc she will WORK to gain it( I love her, but it would be disingenuous to the story making Izumi win by mere existing) but like the media does talk about the fearsome Usage (it's her moniker. A rare win for this fandom is the bunny jokes for Izu) and the same could be add to Cinder. He is a big name in the thievery world.
Or
Cinder works in the shadow and no one knows who he is?
Just wondering here bc I can work either way. Izumi gaining respect in the underworld and even getting the attention of big fishes like Nine.
It is still funny imagine Cinder being oblivious to how popular he is in the social medias. Villain fuckers are real and...he has never met them thanks to his good luck.
Izumi is watching the edits for...science.
You're welcome! Is always nice have more persons in this small fandom for the CiderIzu ship.
Can we call it SeltzerBunny too? Every ship good needs a corny name as well.
I assume the Cider House gang has sort of a reputation, considering their methods to operate and how they can wait for months before a big hit and not get captured in the process.
In my own AU nobody knows Cider is a member of the Himura family btw, but that's also probably because the clan erased a lot of his public registers and invented some story of "our son is overseas" or something like that.
Of course they're a famous gang in the otherworld however.
Ironically Nine is the underdog here, even his origin chapter put emphasis on how he "survived under the radar" considering how crazy his quirk is. I have my own ideas to flesh out this plot point, more info later.
I love the idea of Mizunami being totally clueless about his reputation in certain social media. He would probably think that's a bit cringe, but if it's Izu... he obviously doesn't mind.
He probably can get away because the mask covers a good part of his face, and that's a popular topic among his followers who fantasy about how he looks unmasked.
Only Izu (any version) got the privilege of see that handsome face in person.
Oh yes don't get me wrong, I don't think in canon any part about Yoichi and AFO relationship has any positive side, is totally horrible and toxic but still love the dynamic as a villain motivation. And is funny how the feelings are not one sided as many of AFO detractors think, because Yoichi until his 2nd death as vestige acts like he always wanted AFO to came back to him and be saved somehow.
On a related note, KudoIchi shippers are so freaking annoying...
Nine is a gentleman... that's canon. He has standards unlike crusty kid.
Eh... I wouldn't say any character in DS is trying to be like Bakugou. There's many abrasive characters in that series, but they're far from being similar to Bakugou in any other trait or story role.
Idk why anime fans are so reductive to compare characters based only on archetypes.
Is like the people who compare Shoto and Giyuu Tomioka from DS just because they're the "emo guy" of the series, when outside of a very basic part of their personalities both characters are nothing alike.
Canon possum is a joke but one thing I never forget is how decay IS powerful, sure a powerful quirk with an idiot is not a good thing in many fronts but...
Cinder (I'm loving him already) has to know a guy who can decay stuff with one touch even if he is an idiot.
Would cinder be worried about the quirk ?
Again, shig is an idiot and a bad leader and all that but one thing we can't deny is he knows how to fight.
So I think cinder would make a point to avoid him like the plague.
In canon Cider is the kind of person who knows he shouldn't bite off more than he can chew, since after all his plan during his debut was to steal during a very specific moment in which heroes aren't present, so is more reward without having to fight and less risk.
It was just a coincidence that A.M was there with Bakugou and Todoroki.
I guess his mentality also applies to fight dangerous villains, and the lov had some big names attached them. Their reputation probably was enough for Cider to not have his gang involved with such group of psychos.
But... I disagree on Shigaraki being a good fighter.
Maybe before all the bs power ups given by the doctor he at least knew how do surprise attacks and such, but Decay being such a one-dimensional quirk also means the user doesn't require a lot of skill to put it in use. It is basically just run towards the enemy and touch for instakill.
Which became even more braindead post awakening. Like even Overhaul has more room to be creative and need skill to put in use.
Decay is just a broken and boring quirk that requieres nothing to be effective. Crusty asshole somehow manages to be more plain than he already was at first, is like he evolves in reverse.
Eh, I didn't say that. Is just not for this particular scenario.
AFO is perfect for crossover material in fact.
...
Since you mention it... there's a pretty dope crossover of DS and MHA in Ao3 that is a massive one-shot that blends both stories (until certain point for MHA) in a pretty fascinating way.
And Muzan himself is the villanous main character.
The basic premise is that he survives the events of DS ending and he lives through the dawn of quirks and alters the MHA timeline. Of course during the dawn of quirks Muzan and AFO clash and they have a great rivalry.
...
That's a fair take, I dislike a lot of things about Zenitsu myself. Yes he's annoying but surprisingly not so much for me, I find him funny most time.
There's other things that I hate about him, mainly his atrocious romance with Nezuko and other things post ending that isn't worth explain if you didn't watch the whole series.
...
Yeah crusty boy will be there... just for die in a quick and pathetic way when a hashira shows up.
It will be the best option, trust me.
What do you think about another crossover AU for SeltzerBunny? This time with Demon Slayer.
It's kinda easy to adapt the respective canon quirks of our dear couple into Breathing Styles.
Cider/Mizunami obviously would be a water breathing user, and for this AU I like to think he would be tsuguko of Sabito who survived this time.
While Midoriya is a wind breathing user (cause you know air force and float and green aesthetic... whatever) who was saved by Masachika (Yeah he's also alive at least for now) from the lower moon who killed his mother.
That lower moon would be no other than BK, who is a promising demon in ascension who is capable of generate explosions like his quirk in MHA.
And this would make Midoriya quest for revenge his principal motivation.
Still thinking about the details for this AU and who should be the other characters adapted into it, as MHA having such a big cast compared to DS force me to pick only the necessary lol.
@nyc3 hello
So while I did saw the first season of DS and do think it's well paced and better than MHA in every way -not a big achievement to behold. I didnt saw the other seasons, I got spoilers here and there. My point is how some of the names here are unknown to me.
That being said...I do like more aus for this ship.
Cinder is still a thief in this au or he seeks revenge?
How they meet and how is their dynamic?

@mikeellee @kite2013
As you both notice, it's kind of funny how the interactions of Dr Garaki with both Nine and Shigaraki are such different in the way the scientist treats them (despite both are just lab rats in the end).
Because see how Garaki openly insults, disrespects and laughs of Shigaraki ideas in front of his supposed friends.
Garaki probably felt almost insulted for having to keep the game going just because AFO wants Shigaraki to have this illusion of free choice, when in reality he's just a kid which they still have in the palm of their hand.
Even after MVA when Garaki shows a bit more of tolerancy to Shigaraki for mantain the illusion, in the inside he still makes fun of him because obviously he's the only person to really know Shigaraki is just a vessel playing to be the super villain.
But then we have his interview with Nine...
Notice how the aptitude and demeanor of the doctor is completely the opposite of what we saw with Shigaraki.
Despite obviously he's offering Nine be part of a shady experiment, he acts strangely polite and even shows a bit of curiosity when Nine expose his motives to be part in the experiment.
But also, Garaki thinks Nine is a dangerous individual despite in theory he should be the one in control of the situation and unlike in Shigaraki's case, Nine is alone in front of the doctor.
The biggest difference on how Garaki view Nine and Shigaraki, is that in the first case he sees a real man with strong convictions and an indomitable will who could actually change the curse of the world if he's given the chance.
This is my headcanon, but I think Garaki saw in Nine's eyes the closet to AFO in spirit and convictions (and it's interesting how both of them have the same white/silver eyes, coincidende?).
But for Shigaraki?
He only sees a dumb kid who doesn't even understand the situation he's in. A more obvious puppet who can be used the way he likes.
Shigaraki never had any chance with Garaki.
Oh I forgot to mention, but it's also funny as hell how the doctor shows more respect to Dabi in their private conversations than he does with Shigaraki in the same situation.
This happens because just like Nine, Dabi was a dangerous person who can't be controled so easily by him. So at least it gives him a bit more of respect by the crazy doctor.
First of all, here's the fanfic in case you want to give it a read:
I really love that idea of AFO watching at Muzan and his demon moons, and he being petty as fuck like always inmediately would want to have that as well.
Technically he have nomus but they lack that rule of cool factor of the demon moons, so of course would try to response with super soldiers.
Ironically AFO already have soldiers with numeric order, that being Nine, Six, (Ten)ko and the rest of the unknown prototypes. He probably would try to use that for emulate the demon moons, but will fail epically because like in canon all AFO servants always reveal against him because unlike Muzan his security methods suck.
...
Zenitsu fights are visually cool despite every one of them is the exact same. I mean is kinda his whole thing that he doesn't know any other form of thunder breathing, but since he doesn't get to many fights it doesn't get old.
...
The demon that shares VA with crusty boy is Rui, a great villain btw.
And yeah in my AU crusty would just want mindless destruction. Nobody will feel bad for him, because fuck him. He's just an obstacle in this story.
Okay... maybe he will have sobe story about his human life as Tenko Shimura and he wanted being a demon slayer and save people like Nana, who was a hashira in the past and died in combat.
But a demon attacks and kills the Shimura family and turns him into a demon as well.
Sad and all, but nobody will know the story, he still gets humilliated and killed and goes to hell while his family is in heaven (evil laughs).
