Fuck That Good

fuck that good

šŸ”„ Despaircest (can't be unpopular as in "fandom hates it even though it's gr8"; we need to go weirder and deeper)

If those two fucking idiots ever had an actually honest and heartfelt conversation, things would have gone extremely differently because they actually did feel the same about each other.

The Despaircest plot is told out of order. 1-6's trial has Makoto's hope include the caveat of "we don't even know if Junko is lying!" Yes, he also goes "and if she isn't, we've got this", but that's just half of it and the other half is "nuh uh!" And here's the thing: SDR2 came out years later after DR1 was successful. DR1 never tells us if Junko was lying or not. So, view it with that in mind. DR1 leaves the question to us: was she full of shit?

Two years later, we get the answer. In 2-6. A whole game later, we find out the answer was "no, Junko was not lying". And that modifies the viewing of 1-6. Because now, you have to view 1-6 as "Junko is telling the truth here, she isn't lying to manipulate anyone, she's just being honest". When Junko says she loves her classmates? That's true. When Junko says the world ended? That's true. When Junko says Mukuro is just like her and loves despair the same way as her... wait, what?

Oh, but you're given a decoder ring. Beating SDR2 unlocks Danganronpa IF, where we find out that that is not at all true. But... if Junko isn't lying, but that isn't true, there's only one possible explanation. Junko's wrong. Now, how does that line up with IF? Perfectly.

In IF, Mukuro survives the murder because Makoto's memories start to come back and he warns her to dodge using her real name, so she does it on instinct, so she doesn't die, but he does get hurt trying to save her. Which leads to Mukuro turning on Junko. But importantly, there's the breakup.

"Say, sis?" "Oh! Junko, it's you!" Ikusaba's eyes brightened at the first sight of her sister in days, but they would soon go dim. "You know, I was always thankful to you, sis. I mean it." It was because Junko's voice, coming from the speakers, was terribly soft and gentle. "...Junko?" "I'm really sorry. I was being too harsh with you. I even tried to kill you just now, and I was about to make you do something horrible. Even though I know how you feel about Naegi." "I-I don't..." "Don't force yourself. You might not realize it, but it was really obvious. You never cared about those class pictures, but you looked at the camera properly that one time Naegi took the photo." From just the image on the monitor, the Super High School Level Despair looked like a girl with a sweet, innocent smile teasing her older sister. But that was exactly why Ikusaba was slowly falling towards despairing fear. "I always thought you should've put your all into it when you were in a picture with Naegi, but I guess that's all part of your disappointing self, sis." "But you know, you might be lackluster and disappointing, but I love that about you too." Ikusaba trembled. "I love you. How long had she wanted to hear these words from Junko? Ikusaba believed that, no matter what Junko said, she actually loved her very much. Ikusaba believed that she alone could understand the despair known as Junko Enoshima. It was a ludicrous notion. The moment Junko said, 'I love you', Ikusaba realized--to her agony--that she never truly understood her sister. Only now had she come to realize Junko's feelings. Junko was being kind. There was no lie in her gentle words. Perhaps she was being entirely truthful about loving her sister as well. This was precisely why this signalled the destruction of their relationship. Ikusaba realized that Junko was cutting ties with her. And before Ikusaba could say a word in reply, the girl on the monitor left her with a word of cruelty. "I know you'll make your dreams come true someday."

Do you get it? Junko really, truly loves Mukuro just as much as Mukuro loves her. And they never understood each other, but they both completely believed they did. Combine this with Junko in 1-6 talking about Mukuro and you have Junko's belief before the truth is revealed to her and Junko after the truth is revealed to her.

So, what was killing Mukuro? Trying to say "I love you" and make Mukuro's dreams come true without understanding Mukuro's love language or Mukuro's dreams. Consider how Junko describes how Mukuro "must have" felt. Why would she deny herself that despair? Simple: so Mukuro could have it, believing Mukuro wanted it just as much as she did. Her act of love in DR1 was self-sacrifice to give the greatest gift she could imagine to someone who she never realized didn't want it.

And what does Junko do when she does realize it? She breaks her entire sense of self and personality just to express her love to Mukuro. She realizes Mukuro has hope and everything, and she encourages it and fosters it out of love for her. She loves Mukuro enough that, even knowing they will now be enemies, she will speak Mukuro's love language rather than her own to make Mukuro truly know how much she loves her. This scene and killing Mukuro have the same meaning, and you can only come to understand this by combining 1-6 and IF to get two contradictory perspectives in order to recognize the before-belief and the after-belief.

Junko fucking loves her so goddamn much, but Junko expresses her love in a very particular way. Despair. Remember what she said to Class 78? She loves them all. She wasn't lying about that either. It's so personalized, so direct, so cruel, because she loves them. She loves Mukuro most of all, so she granted Mukuro the most intense despair imaginable, even though it meant losing it for herself, even though that is literally her entire modus operandi. It's fucking self-sacrifice when she kills Mukuro.

The twist is that she never understood that Mukuro didn't want it. Junko can understand and learn anything, except the one thing staring her in the face. But because of her talent, she can't imagine that there's something so blatant right in front of her she's failing to understand. Mukuro meanwhile? Danganronpa Zero gives us this:

Then, looking at the face Ikusaba-san showed me, I was suddenly taken aback. The ever so emotionless face was, ecstatic and smiling. "I donā€˜t know if...she is attracting despair or despair is attracting her but...she has lived her whole life with despair by her side. She lived while immersed in despair. Thatā€˜s why she began looking for despair in others. She learned to enjoy pushing people into despair. But you know, thatā€˜s normal. Itā€˜s the same as someone being cursed by misfortune fall into hatred for those who arenā€˜t. But whatā€˜s special about her was that, she learned to enjoy inflicting despair onto herself. Thatā€˜s how the link to despair began. As she chased down despair, she pushed it onto others on the way. Doing so, it caused her to desire falling into despair even more...and because of that chain to despair, the Super High School Level Despair was born." While she spoke, it was like she fell into a fever, the expressions on her face turned into ecstasy. It was so completely absurd that it would have been hard for anybody to think of it as anything but a joke, but I understood that this was real. It mightā€˜ve been because the memories of Junko Enoshima inside me led to that conclusion. "Hey, you donā€˜t get it right? I donā€˜t think anybody could. But you know, only I can understand it..." Consumed by ecstasy, even Ikusaba-sanā€˜s breaths began to become ragged. "Only I am able of understanding her. Thatā€˜s why she needs me. She still hasnā€˜t realized that but, maybe she is only pretending not to realize. Ufu, thatā€˜s because sheā€˜s so shy. Ufufufu." Seeing this intoxicated Ikusaba-san continue to talk like that, repelled me. I knew that she definitely didnā€˜t have normal feelings for Junko Enoshima, but that sort of thing shouldnā€˜t have anything to do with me.

They both have failed to understand each other. Danganronpa Zero came out before Danganronpa IF. So,

Ikusaba believed that she alone could understand the despair known as Junko Enoshima. It was a ludicrous notion.

Is a callback to

"Hey, you donā€˜t get it right? I donā€˜t think anybody could. But you know, only I can understand it..."

Both of them are having their preconceived notions about each other shattered at the same time in that scene in IF. Because both of them just assumed they understood each other. Because of course they did. They've been linked at the hip so long, they're symbiotic. Except, no, they didn't. Because they both assumed, rather than ever actually talking and getting on the same page. And note,

Seeing this intoxicated Ikusaba-san continue to talk like that, repelled me. I knew that she definitely didnā€˜t have normal feelings for Junko Enoshima, but that sort of thing shouldnā€˜t have anything to do with me.

It was incest in 2011. Before SDR2 and IF released. It was always incest. DR3 just was going "now shut the fuck up, we've visually confirmed it for you".

So yeah, Despaircest was mutual love of equal intensity ruined by them both being arrogant dipshits who failed to get on the same page because they wouldn't just have a goddamn conversation about it because they both assumed that they would gain nothing from it because they totally already understood each other so goddamn well. It was mutual, and Junko actually really did love Mukuro just as much as Mukuro loved Junko. It turned tragic from a lack of communication.

Can we get Makoto and Komaru waking up slowly as they enjoying snuggling to their "pillows"? They enjoy it... until they realize that it is the big chest of Aoi and Yuta. That makes The Eggs (Naegi Siblings) flustered while The Otters (Asahina Siblings) tease their favorite siblings.

Again a another reason for me to like Arturo and Ace

I just realized something sad related to Ace and Arturo in ch.2

You how that Ace listened in and found out about Arturo threatening Eden and Arei saving her, to which he creates the note. It means he knew about Arturo’s sister dying because of him right? You think when Ace was telling Arturo he can save Levi and only him that Ace probably wanted Arturo to save him not just because he’s the only medical help around, but also to redeem himself in not losing another life on his hands since Ace knows what it's like to lose someone dear to you and blame yourself for their death( cough cough Taylor cough).

Why Tenko Chabashira is a Great Character pt. 1: Tenko’s Backstory and PersonalityA

Another essay excerpt because that did better than I expected last time and I'm suprised people actually want to read my stuff.

Tenko Chabashira is an over-hated character in the fandom with people before the game even came out criticizing her and hoping that she died.

Now this is not everyone’s opinion.

I've seen many people praise Tenko, but it’s a widely accepted opinion that she sucks, ranking near the bottom on a lot of people’s tier lists and having people post on every social media platform how much they hate her.

I love Tenko.

She is my favorite character in NDRV3 and right now my favorite character of all time.

With the game already in its eight anniversary I thought, what a better time than ever to fulfill my civic duty as a Tenko fan and explain why she is a great character and doesn’t deserve nearly all the hate she’s gotten.

Backstory

One of the main reasons people hate Tenko is her hatred of men.

I would like to lessen this to dislike because Tenko shows multiple times in the game that she does not hate men and there are also reasons behind her sentiments.

Tenko took her master's teachings very seriously; he was like a father figure to her (which makes sense especially since her parents abandoned her), and she was adamant about mastering neo-aikido.

Tenko is also really gullible.

It's why she believes Himiko can do real magic, so she would believe her master wholeheartedly when he tells her that interactions with men would weaken her.

It's similar to a child being told by their parents that if they are good Santa will give them gifts.

Another factor contributing to Tenko’s dislike of men would be her crime fighting which not only adds to her childlike nature but gives more of a reason to her so-called ā€œman-hating.ā€

In one of Tenko’s ftes with Shuichi, she says:

ā€œAs practitioners of Neo-Aikido, Master and I… are also heroes of justice! Master and I wear masks to disguise ourselves! We serve to save, whether it is day or night! We do everything! Help an old woman carry her belongings… Help a child cross the street…Oh, yeah! I caught a thief the other day! We also punish degenerates who cheat and bring divine justice to gropers on trains. And even help girls who just had tough break-ups!ā€

Even though those don’t seem like the best reasons to ā€œhateā€ a whole gender overshadowed by being hurt by men emotionally or physically.

If you think about it, it’s not the worst reason either, Tenko was just a kid and her master filled her head with misconceptions and stereotypes about men.

(In the end, he was just trying to protect but there are many more ways to go about it.)

Of course, Tenko didn’t have to believe it, but by being exposed to bad men on the streets when she and her master were fighting crime, and not having many interactions with good men, you can start to see where she comes from.

She’s just like a kid who never grew out of the boys' cooties phase (with a little more trauma), and as a kid, she wasn’t taught that all men aren’t bad, she wasn’t shown that all men aren’t bad, and she wasn’t exposed to the idea either.

I don’t think we should blame Tenko for something really out of her control.

Children are very impressionable that's why they're easy targets (well them and elderly people).

Their frontal lobes aren't fully developed so they don't think critically plus when your a kid small and vulnerable you tend to look to your parents for safety and guidance.

Imagine yourself in Tenko’s shoes. The man who is basically a father figure to her tells her all these misconceptions about men—and that they will stop her from fully mastering Neo-Aikido, something she has dedicated years to. With her low self-esteem, she likely already believes she isn’t good enough.

(While most of her self-esteem issues seem to be tied to her physical abilities, strength could play a role in that too. )

Wouldn’t that make you dislike them?

Then when he takes her out and she sees the men doing exactly what her master told her that they would do it would not only prove that her masters teachings are true it would solidify that hatred.

Now at the beginning of this section I said that Tenko doesn’t hate men but now I’m saying she does?

I believe Tenko had bad teachings and exposure that made her man hatred reasonable.

I don't think Tenko hates the whole male species as she says she does but if you're a man who hurts women Tenko is going to hate you with a burning passion an important distinction I need to make.

Tenko’s backstory isn’t perfect I’ll admit that but based on how she interacts with men during the game and how she acts overall bad exposure and teachings are a fine reason.

Personality

She’s rather boisterous and is like a ball of energy and can be overbearing to other students especially Himiko since how she acts with other students (not just the boys) is not ā€œnormalā€ per se (but no one in this game is normal) many people chalk it up to her just being annoying.

Still, I would like to add something else that may be a factor in her upbringing which I know I have already discussed.

Still, Tenko grew up in a temple with priests she was sent there when she was very young (there isn’t a specific age but many suspect five to six) so we can assume that she didn’t have a lot of interaction with kids her age (especially boys) with the only time interacting with people probably being people going in the temples for religious purposes or the people she saved while fighting crime.

A person’s upbringing especially if it’s bad or not normal can influence how someone acts just take Maki Harukawa, for example, she grew up in an orphanage and was trained to be an assassin during the game when Shuichi and Kaito are fighting she makes Shuichi watch her teaching Kaito to assemble and disassemble a crossbow so that they can make up, and when Kaito is kidnapped she reverts to the only thing she knows and tries to kill Kokichi.

Or Gonta Gokuhara who was raised in the forest by wolves doing odd things like not wearing shoes, lacking general cultural knowledge, getting suddenly controlled by strong emotions and having trouble with language.

So it makes sense for Tenko to act strangely and lack strong social skills, given her isolation from kids her age when she was young.

Unlike someone who has been interacting with others their entire life, starting from kindergarten, her experiences have been limited.

Or you can just say it’s her lack of understanding social cues and she’s neurodivergent coded.

...

Tenko, while claiming she hates men, gets along fine with them and shows them support. Some of these scenes include:

Joining Kaito’s strategy meeting

Telling Shuichi not to be too hard on himself after Kaede’s death

Yelling at Kokichi when he makes fun of Shuichi without his hat

Promising to avenge Rantaro and Ryoma’s deaths

Complementing Gonta for being calm and reasonable after Kirumi accuses him

Feeling bad after flipping Shuichi over her shoulder and carrying him back to her room

Allowing Shuichi to participate in Aikido with her

Telling Shuichi he needs to gain more confidence in himself.

She is also lovely and caring, volunteering to protect all of the girls, placing herself at risk alongside Kaito and Gonta to save Kaede from her execution, and her friendship with Himiko, in which she tries to help her overcome her emotional suppression, demonstrates her compassion for others.

She is one of the most vocal characters when it comes to opposing the killing game they were imprisoned in, and she is always willing to offer assistance or emotional support.

Tenko has a wonderful personality. Her deep emotional core, supportive persona, and childlike thinking are qualities that I and many others can identify with.

These qualities, in my opinion, dampen the hatred of her "male-hating" mentality in some aspects and make her a charming character.

Tenko's development

While having many ā€˜annoying/ undesirable’ traits Tenko eventually does have character development.

The main one is her dislike of men. I've already discussed that this dislike doesn’t seem genuine because, since the beginning of the game, she’s been having friendly, kindhearted interactions with men but taking that out of account Tenko does develop from the beginning of the game to her death.

Tenko’s journey reveals layers of her personality, showcasing how bad experiences shape beliefs and attitudes.

And how a good experience can turn it all around for the better even if her transformation is not entirely linear and overshadowed by other major characters (Shuichi Maki and Himiko.)

In her Free Time Events (FTEs) with Shuichi, she is very mean to him.

Nicest thing she says is that he can improve himself through Neo Aikido and become a good man like her master.

However, the interactions in her FTEs specifically with Shuichi amplify her disdain for men making it seem worse than it is in the game.

Despite all this she still she moments of genuine growth realizing that not all men are as bad as the ones her master told her about and the one she saw while crime-fighting through her experiences with Shuichi and the other men in the game she slowly but surely alters her perspective, and the journey leads her to form a friendship--though some would say acquaintanceship--with Shuichi (a man 😱.)

It’s a shift for her from her initial male-hating persona as she learns to accept that not every man is as bad as she was taught to believe by her master.

I could go on but this is getting long so in Part 2 I'll delve deeper into Tenko’s character arc and development in chapter 3.

Nightmare (Komahina Oneshot)

Nagito Komeada x Hajime Hinata

Warnings: Blood and death

Hajime ran out of the restaurant, trying to find the others. After receiving a worrying message from Nagito, he quickly bolted to the restaurant, to find no one. He didn't see anyone on his way to the beach either.

But right when he turned to enter the beach, he froze.

Fuyuhiko. Sonia. Akane. Kazuichi.

Their bloody bodies lay motionless on the beach. But before he could do anything, he heard small wimpers of pain. Then, he noticed Nagito standing there.

He was gripping Mikan by the back of her neck, and held a knife in his other hand. His once warm gray-green eyes were now swirling, and wide with insanity. Nagito always had a strong obsession with hope, but these were not eyes of hope. They were eyes of despair.

Nagito plunged the knife into Mikan's neck, blood splattering all over the sand, dyeing it red. Mikan's watering eyes, filled with fear, turned dull and lifeless. Nagito let her body drop to the ground. He held a twisted grin on his face. He was clearly proud of himself for his... accomplishments.

He turned his body to face Mikan.

"I am very sorry, Mikan. Will you please... Forgive me?"

The tone of his voice made Hajime flinch, and Nagito let out a twisted, maniacal laugh. All of Hajime's uneasiness suddenly transformed into fear.

Forcing himself to move, Hajime took three small steps forward. Taking a better look at his boyfriend, his hoodie was covered in blood, and had bloody smears on his face. From the looks of the bodies and the bloodstains, they were recent.

Nagito immediately turned his body to face him.

"How nice of you to join us, Hajime! Everyone was waiting for you..."

"You-You did this, didn't you?" Hajime struggled to speak. Nagito smirked.

"What a smart man you are. Of course it was me. They were getting in my way, so I had them removed..."

Hajime looked at Mikan's lifeless body.

"But-But why Mikan?! What did she ever do to you?? Don't you know that she did her best to help you when you had Liar's Disease?!" Nagito chuckled.

"Of course. But that was before Mikan was getting close to you. A little..."

Nagito stepped towards Hajime until his face was level with his.

"...too close for my liking."

Nagito pointed a knife at Hajime's neck when he spoke.

"Are... Are you going to kill me...?"

Nagito was grinning again, as he traced a line from Hajime's neck down his neck to his shoulder with his finger. With his left hand, he gently ran the side of the knife's blade down Hajime's side, his grin widening when he felt Hajime shiver. The blood from the knife made a trail down Hajime's side.

"Now, now Hajime... I could never do that. You're my hope, after all. I did all of this for us."

Nagito cackled again, causing Hajime to flinch once more. Nagito was gone. This wasn't his friend. His boyfriend. Nagito wouldn't do anything so obscene. So... despairing.

But he did. And Hajime was trapped with him.

...Forever.

------------------------------------------

Hajime woke with a start. His chest heaved as he struggled to breathe. After taking a few moments to collect himself, Hajime took a moment to check his surroundings.

He was in his cottage, laying flat on his back in bed. He checked the clock on the bedside table. 2:30 AM.

He let out a sigh, simultaneously relieved that the nightmare wasn't real, and annoyed that he wouldn't be able to go back to sleep.

He jumped when he heard movement next to him. He turned his head to see Nagito stirring as he turned his body to face Hajime.

That's right. Nagito.

His boyfriend.

Hajime swiftly rolled onto his side to face away from him.

Even though he knew it was just a nightmare, he couldn't help but flinch when Nagito placed his hand on his arm.

He felt Nagito draw his hand back as if he had touched something hot. When he gently grazed his fingers on Hajime's arm, he tensed, but didn't reject the touch.

Nagito fully placed his hand on Hajime's hand again, and felt the boy's muscles relax, though his body was stiff.

"What's wrong, love?" Nagito asked with a sleepy tone. Hajime gulped. He couldn't even begin to imagine how Nagito would react if Hajime told him about the nightmare.

What if he really thought Hajime thought he was a murderer? He would be so offended.

"Nothing," Hajime forced out. Nagito began to gently rub his arm.

"I can see that something's wrong. I felt you tossing and turning in your sleep, and you flinched when I tried to touch you. Please tell me what's wrong," Nagito pleaded.

"It was a nightmare," Hajime finally admitted. "But I can't explain it. I don't want to offend you."

Hajime couldn't see, but he could guess that Nagito raised his eyebrows in confusion.

"Why would I be offended by a nightmare? You can't control your dreams."

Hajime supposed that was true.

He took a deep breath in, and started to explain.

"I received a message from you, saying that I wouldn't have to worry about death or despair anymore. I headed to the restaurant, but it was empty. Then I headed to the beach, and everyone was dead. And there you were in the middle, with blood on your clothes and an expression of complete despair."

Hajime felt Nagito stiffen in surprise, but the white haired boy continued to rub his arm as he waited for Hajime to continue.

"After you killed Mikan, you turned to me. You said that the others got in your way, so you removed them. You didn't kill me, though. You only killed the others so we would be alone together. Forever."

Nagito was silent for a moment. Hajime was worried that he was offended before he felt his boyfriend wrap his arm around Hajime's torso and pulled him close. Nagito pressed his stomach into Hajime's back and rested his chin on his head.

"That does sound frightening. But I can assure you that I would never kill anyone. As much as I relish the thought of being with you forever, I would never harm or kill anyone to achieve that. That would be far too despairing for me to do."

Hajime managed a smile. Of course Nagito wouldn't harm anyone. He was just too hopeful.

Nagito let out a chuckle. "Is that a smile I see?" He lightly teased. Hajime let out a chuckle of his own. "Maybe."

Nagito smiled and pressed a kiss to his head.

"Are you feeling better, love?" Nagito asked. Hajime held his hand that was wrapped around his waist. "Yeah. Thank you, Nagi."

Nagito held hin tighter. "Of course. Now, what do you say we go back to sleep?"

Hajime nodded and tried to turn his body to face his boyfriend, but Nagito wouldn't budge.

Hajime chuckled pressed up against Nagito's stomach. He supposed he would let Nagito be the big spoon. The nightmare way in the back of his mind, Nagito's warmth and his breathing, along with his heartbeat relaxed Hajime, and he could feel his eyelids growing heavier.

Nagito kissed his head once more before whispering, "Goodnight, my hope. Sweet dreams."
