“A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.” — Richard Bach

“The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe.” — Gustave Flaubert

“I’m not a very good writer, but I’m an excellent rewriter.” — James Michener

How to Write a Character Who Feels Like Throwing Up

When fear, dread, or guilt gets sickening—literally—your character is consumed with a gut-clenching feeling that something is very, very wrong. Here's how to write that emotion using more than the classic "bile rose to the back of their throat".

Start with the Stomach

This isn’t just about discomfort. It’s about a complete rebellion happening inside their body.

Their stomach twists like a knot that keeps pulling tighter

A cold sweat beads on their neck, their palms, their spine

Their insides feel sludgy, like everything they’ve eaten is suddenly unwelcome

They double over, not from pain, but because sitting still feels impossible

Add Sensory Overload

Vomiting isn’t just a stomach reaction—it’s the whole body.

Their mouth goes dry, and then too wet

Their jaw tightens, trying to contain it

A sudden heat blooms in their chest and face, overwhelming

The back of their throat burns—not bile, but the threat of it

Breathing becomes a conscious effort: in, out, shallow, sharp

Emotional Triggers

Nausea doesn’t always need a physical cause. Tie it to emotion for more impact:

Fear: The kind that’s silent and wide-eyed. They’re frozen, too sick to speak.

Guilt: Their hands are cold, but their face is flushed. Every memory plays like a film reel behind their eyes.

Shock: Something just snapped inside. Their body registered it before their brain did.

Ground It in Action

Don’t just describe the nausea—show them reacting to it.

They press a fist to their mouth, pretending it’s a cough

Their knees weaken, and they lean on a wall, pretending it’s just fatigue

They excuse themselves quietly, then collapse in a bathroom stall

They swallow, again and again, like that’ll keep everything down

Let the Consequences Linger

Even if they don’t actually throw up, the aftermath sticks.

A sour taste that won’t leave their mouth.

A pulsing headache

A body that feels hollowed out, shaky, untrustworthy

The shame of nearly losing control in front of someone else

Let Them Be Human

A character feeling like vomiting is vulnerable. It's real. It’s raw. It means they’re overwhelmed in a way they can’t hide. And that makes them relatable. You don’t need melodrama—you need truth. Capture that moment where the world spins, and they don’t know if it’s panic or flu or fear, but all they want is to get out of their own body for a second.

Don't just write the bile. Write the breakdown.

Okay listen I have another disability related thing that’s important!!

If you have any disabilities linked to tooth decay/erosion, through direct cause or secondary symptom, it is vital that you get one or both of the following items: Sensodyne toothpaste and enamel repair mouthwash

Okay Listen I Have Another Disability Related Thing That’s Important!!
Okay Listen I Have Another Disability Related Thing That’s Important!!

This includes health conditions such as acid reflux, diabetes, thyroid conditions, fibromyalgia, chronic pain & mental illnesses such as depression that create poor hygiene routines, sensory issue disorders like autism and ADHD, and any health condition that causes frequent vomiting / increased stomach acid, including eating disorders and migraines.

All of these disabilities will erode the enamel of your teeth, not only opening you up to cavities but making it very easy to chip your teeth from such simple things as biting the wrong way on the tines of a fork. (I’ve chipped my teeth at least 4 times this way).

The toothpaste on the left here (sensodyne pronamel) is gentle on your teeth, won’t cause painful sensations from any extreme mint flavor, and will even protect your gums if they’re sensitive from any of these conditions.

The mouthwash on the right (Crest enamel repair) will, as it says, repair your enamel — which is marvelous, because the technology to repair your enamel at all is relatively very new to society! — but it is most importantly non-alcoholic. Meaning that it works well as a once-a-day rinse without any of the burning sensations of antiseptics that typically discourage people with sensory issues from taking care of their teeth.

I know remembering to do these things every day can feel like a lot when you’re sick and exhausted, but I promise a collective three minutes out of every day is going to save you an incredible amount of pain and money in the future. If your teeth are susceptible enough to rot, you can actually die from infection. And as they say, with how little insurance actually covers dental —

Not brushing your teeth??

In THIS economy???

Okay I have a question

This might be a dumb question

But

How do I plot.

I mean the only way I know to plot is like okayy character A does this and then this happens and then it's solved.

how do we come up with the ...STUFF that happens in between the stuff that's suppose to happen. (Maybe all I have to do is sit down and think but I can't seem to do that)

Hey! That’s a really good question!

So, I’ve seen a lot of advice about plotting that basically boils down to “write down the plot of your book” but I’ve always found that to be a bit vague. Plotting really isn’t that intimidating once you figure out a method for it but if you’re starting from scratch, it can definitely be a daunting process.

My method of plotting is broken down into 3 basic processes:

1. Figure out the world you’re writing in.

Now, my personal way of doing this is by making a PowerPoint. I treat it like I’m crafting a presentation for a class. I give lots of historical context to my setting, mention cultural things that might be relevant. Basically, I just make a slideshow that I can refer back to when I’ve lost track of some of my worldbuilding.

Depending on your setting, this process might be more or less extensive. For instance, if you were writing in the present day in whatever setting you live in, you might only need to keep track of the dates and times that your book is taking place in. If you were writing in whatever setting you live in but twenty years ago, it might be a little more extensive, as you would probably want to keep track of things like major events, more local events, what technology was widely available, the cost of things, etc.. This part of plotting is especially useful for any science fiction or fantasy writing, as it can be a great format to keep track of different magic systems and other settings that are useful lore in your setting.

2. Establish your characters.

Coming up with characters is definitely most writers’ favorite part of starting a new story. Not only does it usually come pretty naturally, the characters tend to shape the world around them as you build their personalities and backstories up. Don’t let them run away with your world, though. It can be really easy to justify making worldbuilding things that suit your characters really well, but remember, you’re trying to create a convincing setting as well as interesting people within that setting. There are always going to be aspects of the world that work against your characters interests, as well as parts that they just don’t really care about.

Ultimately, I recommend making a folder for each main character you have. Include vignettes written about them/from their perspective. Add drawings and playlists! Have fun with it! As long as you make some kind of documentation of who they are/where they came from/where you think they want to go/where you think their part in the story will be, you’re going to get the hang of writing ABOUT them, which is the point.

3. Figure out a problem, a cause, and a catalyst.

A lot of what’s difficult about plotting is that you don’t always know what you want the story to be. Even if you do know what you want to happen, you don’t always know how to make it happen. This is why I format this process like a flow chart or in bullet points. You want to find the “problem” at the center of your plot.

Obviously, in your story, things happen. But what things? And why? But more specifically why here? Why now? Why these characters? Why in this place? It’s important to figure out not only what happens in your book but why that is what MUST happen. There has to be some inescapable force driving your plot forward (the desires of a character, the plans of the antagonist, global events, some sort of deadline) or else it will not feel like it is moving forward on its own, rather you will likely find it is very hard to “make” your characters do what you need them to. (Another piece of advice: if you feel like you’re having to force a scene to fit in a certain place in the plot, that’s because it doesn’t have anything that’s pushing it to happen right there and right then.)

This part does take a lot of writing (more journal style writing, rather than writing vignettes) but it is SO helpful when you actually start your first draft.

If you want, I can totally go more in depth about how to organize a flow chart or how I organize my billet points. I just omitted them because this post is already pretty long. I hope this is helpful! Sorry it took me so long to get to this ask.

Good luck and happy writing!

SANJI HEADCANONS!

—HOW HE LOVES;;

- all for nothing;; sanji doesn’t do half-measures. If he loves you, he loves you w/ everything he has. He will drop everything to make sure you are happy, sometimes at the cost of his own well-being.

- romance is second nature to him;; Not in a fake, performative way. He just genuinely enjoys making you feel adored. Expect small gestures such as a cup of tea made just how you like it, a flower tucked behind your ear, a hand on your waist when no one’s watching .. etc

- Food is His Love Language;; He will learn your cravings before you even realize you have them. Stressing out? Here’s your favorite dish. Had a long day? He’s already making something warm and comforting. Nothing says “I love you” like a perfectly plated meal with your name written in sauce.

- Always Touching You;; Nothing overbearing, just little things, fingers brushing yours when he hands you a plate, a hand at the small of your back, adjusting your collar because “Tch, you can’t just walk around looking like that.” It’s his way of staying connected.

-Sanji is the embodiment of a walking romance novel at first;; Expect dramatic gestures—roses, candlelit dinners (even if it’s just on the Sunny), and calling you every pet name under the sun (mon amour, darling, my love—it never stops).

- His flirting is still constant, but he gets flustered when you flirt back;; If you casually say something like, “You’re handsome, you know that?” this man will short-circuit. Starts stammering, suddenly can’t make eye contact he was NOT prepared.

—DATING SANJI MEANS..

Late-Night Conversations in the Kitchen;; When the ship is quiet, you’ll find him there, brewing tea or making something light. If you’re up too, he’ll pull out a chair, pour you a drink, and just talk. Those moments feel intimate—just you, him, and the soft glow of the kitchen dim lights.

Being Taken Care of (Even If You Don’t Ask);; Cold? He’s draping his jacket over your shoulders. Feeling sick? He’s already making soup. Had a rough day? His fingers are in your hair, massaging your scalp as he hums quietly.

Dealing with His Stubbornness – He will absolutely not admit when he needs help. You’ll have to learn how to trick him into resting. Maybe you tell him you “just want company” so he’ll sit down next to you. Maybe you grab his wrist before he can light another cigarette and just hold it until he sighs and relents. He won’t say it, but he appreciates it more than he can put into words.

- Watching Him Go from Sweet to Deadly in Seconds;; You know he’s the most charming, caring person, but the moment someone disrespects you? That’s gone. His voice gets low, his smile sharp, and the guy who was just flirting w/ you suddenly finds himself face down on the floor.

—HIS FLAWS;;

- Bottles up emotions;; Acts fine until he explodes—either sharp words or total isolation.

- Stubborn as hell;; Will die on a hill even when he’s wrong.

- Self-destructive;; Would rather suffer alone than let others get hurt (Whole Cake Island, anyone?).

- Overthinks everything;; Acts smooth, but internally spiraling (“Did I sound dumb? Are they mad?”).

- Jealous but won’t admit it;; Plays it cool until someone flirts with you—then suddenly all touchy.

SANJI HEADCANONS!

First time making these, it’s just some thoughts… lmk if you want anyone else too!!! :D
