My immediate reaction to seeing this: Grab my ever present notebook and copy it down so I don't have to keep flipping tabs. Open the Coppermind. Translate. Grin.
an urgent PSA to the cosmere fandom
This post will be frequently updated - check the Google Doc linked here for the latest version. Follow this Tumblr for more information in the days ahead.
Yahoo Groups will be shutting down key features and restricting access to Groups, with user-uploaded content being deleted on December 14, 2019. With this shutdown, decades of fandom history will vanish. But there is something that every member of the fandom community can do now - whether they’ve ever used Yahoo Groups before or not.
Immediately contact the admins to find out what their plans are.
Download PGOffline, a Windows tool to save the files and messages. Any member of the Yahoo Group can use this tool - you do not have to be an admin to save the mailing list.
Since many admins are busy or inactive, install the free Windows software program yourself and start downloading - focus on Files, Photos, Links, and Messages. A step-by-step walk through is available here and a video tutorial here.
Submit your plan to download here.
Export the messages and backup up the files and photos by copying them to another folder on your computer. Then contact Open Doors, the OTW preservation program. The OTW is open to providing storage of Yahoo Groups backups that are assembled by moderators and non-moderators alike. Details are here.
If you are a member of a Yahoo Group and have downloaded the files and messages, and the admins do not respond, please contact your fellow mailing list members. Remember, anyone can save a mailing list messages, files and photos and submit them to Open Doors.
Click here for instructions on how to use the Chrome plugin
If you need help from fellow fans, try asking on the “Save Yahoo Groups” Discord Channel
Mac Users: try this Chrome based plugin
Instructions on how to use the Chrome plugin
Alternatively, if you are familiar with Python, please experiment with the tools found at https://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=Yahoo!_Groups
Communicate with your Group members - let them know your plans
Download your Group messages, files, photos, and links using the tools above. Don’t forget to download your members list.
Decide if you want to simply archive the old posts and disband the mailing list or start up somewhere else.
Please take a look at setting up a Dreamwidth community - it allows explicit material, threaded conversations, privacy locks and is free. Image uploading is limited to 500MB for free accounts and 1.5GB paid accounts. Also, if you are considering Groups.io as an option, please note that it does not allow any material that depicts sexual activity, even implied sexual activity or anything that could be considered a fetish.
If you are a member of a mailing list, submit the mailing list for consideration. It will help volunteers focus their efforts. Don’t forget check here to see if your group is already being downloaded.
Even if you are not a mailing list member, consider creating a page for the mailing list on Fanlore, so that there will be a place for people to talk about the mailing list, its history. Details here.
Has your “inactive” email been purged? Is your email email address not linked to a Yahoo Group ID?
An “inactive” account is one where you haven’t sent an email or logged in for the past year. Receiving emails does not count as activity. The email address is then released, and can be used by someone else.
If you used your Yahoo email to subscribe to a mailing list, your access to the Yahoo Group is gone (along with all your emails). If your account was deactivated within the past 90 days, you may be able to reactivate it. (more here). Alternatively, you can try contacting Yahoo Mail support.
Outside the 90 day window: you can try creating a new Yahoo email account using the same screen name as long as no one else has snapped it up. Simply sign up as you would for a ‘new’ email account. Reclaim an inactive mailbox. Then log into your Yahoo Group.
In the last post, we determined that the incenter (the intersection of the angle bisectors of the triangle) is probably the most viable center option for constructing 9-point ellipses. Today we will look at what we can get by using different triangles.
The first thing to note is that for an equilateral triangle the incenter is the same as the orthocenter. This is because the angle bisectors are also the altitudes of the triangle. This means that the resulting conic is going to be the 6 point circle we are already familiar with.
When we were working with the orthocenter, right triangles gave us special cases because two of the legs of the triangle were also altitudes. Since we are using angle bisectors instead of altitudes now, right triangles do not form a special case. In fact, we will never have a situation where a bisector coincides with a triangle side.
Another interesting thing to note is that, unlike the orthocenter, the incenter will always be inside the triangle, even if the triangle is obtuse. This means that obtuse triangles now produce new 9 bind-point patterns.
The most interesting case occurs when we look at isosceles triangles. Here, the angle bisector for the different angle also bisects the base of the triangle. This means that those two points coincide and we end up with 8-point ellipses. Furthermore, the symmetry of the triangle means that the angle bisector of the unique angle will also end up being an axis of the 8-point ellipse. If the unique angle is smaller than the two matching angles, it will be the major axis. If it is larger, it will be the minor axis. Both possibilities have potential strengths and could be used to design useful defenses.
Next time we will either go off the deep end with a crazy idea I have for Lines of Warding or we will dive into Lines of Vigor. I haven't decided topic I want to write up next.
I'm having trouble getting the next chapter of my Shallan in HP land crossover right, so I've been rereading Shallan chapters trying to figure out why things aren't working. It's getting there. In the mean time, have some Pattern thoughts:
“The pattern seemed impossible to capture. Its complex repetitions twisted down into infinity.” (pg 67)
Our dear friend Pattern is a fractal. This much is clear. It takes a while, but Shallan finally gets around to asking Pattern if he has a name beyond the one she has given him. His response:
“Name is numbers. Many numbers. Hard to say. Pattern...Pattern is fine.” (pg 215)
Fractal patterns that are on some level infinitely complex can often be described by seemingly simple equations or sets of rules.
Theory/ Headcanon: Pattern's true name is a mathematical description of his fractal form. The fractal exists in multiple dimensions and his appearance in the physical realm is just one tiny slice of his full form: the intersection of the fractal with the physical realm. His apparently changing patterns are not actually his pattern changing, but instead him moving so that the intersection changes and we get different views of him. His ability to shrink corresponds to moving so that his intersection with the physical realm is smaller.
Now I really want to know Pattern's true name.
Hey Cosmere fandom, it’s book rec time.
The book series in question is the Imperial Radch Trilogy by Ann Leckie. In order, the books are Ancillary Justice, Ancillary Sword, and Ancillary Mercy.
It’s a space opera with significant focus on character and relationships. The POV character is Breq, an aro-ace space warship AI in a human body who sets out on an impossible journey to kill the Lord of the Radch (the local 3000 year old space emperor) to revenge her beloved Lieutenant. Along the way she (unintentionally and reluctantly) collects people (humans, ships, aliens,...) in a gloriously messy found family.
* It’s super queer
* Characters actively struggle with depression, anxiety, addiction, etc.
* Almost everyone is a PoC
* For the sake of Propriety everyone wears gloves and bare hands are super scandalous.
These books are amazing and you should strongly consider reading them. The audio book versions are also fabulous.
If you’ve already read them, I’ve been Radch posting on my other blog (RithmatistKalyna) and I would love to talk with people both about the books/characters/tea sets/etc and all of the Cosmere crossover potential.
After some thought, she decided that the concept of loving siblings was a little like the Allomantic pulse lengths she was supposed to be looking for - they were just too unfamiliar for her to understand at the moment.
Oh, Vin. Your brother may have helped you survive, but he was a horrible, horrible brother. And she HAD a baby sister that their mom killed. I can't even...
Vin still needs to have Lift as a little sister. Then, one night when Shallan is out on a mission as Veil she needs to come across them and bring them in off the streets and eventually be accepted into their little group as the big sister. She would try to tame them somewhat and teach them things like writing, but they would spend just as much time corrupting Shallan. They would create an alter-ego for Lift so that the Ladies Davar, Valette and [I'm still trying to come up with a good name] could go out together, but they would also create a third alter-ego for Shallan (beacuse they wouldn't want the ghostbloods to recognize Veil) so that they could sneak out in the streets together.
Now I really want to know if burning copper affects lightweaving at all... Can Vin see through lightweaving if she is burning copper? or maybe if she is burning tin? hmmm.... Also, if Shallan weaves a disguise for another Radiant, can they maintain it with their stormlight even if they aren't a light weaver?
I'm slightly late, but here you go! Have a little story :-)
Adolin's first reaction was to stare blankly at her. After what felt like ages, he shook himself and asked slowly, “I...don't think I heard you right...could you say that again?”
Shallan rolled her eyes, “I want to find a way to actually watch and document the highstorms.”
He took a deep breath. “Ok. That's what I thought you said... Why?! Wasn't being stuck out in one in the chasms enough?”
She laughed, “Nope – it just made me realize how much we don't know.”
"Of course it did." Adolin groaned. “If I don't help you with this, you're just going to find a way on your own, aren't you?” He sighed. “Fine. At least this way I'll know what's going on. Knowing you, you already have at least half of a plan. Let's hear it.”
OMH THAT IS ABSOLUTELY STORMING ADORABLE!!!!! You’re amazing :D
“anything about axehounds or chulls or skyeels or other stormlight critters”
For kalynaanne! Here’s an axehound pup taking a nap in the afternoon sun. :D
AHHHH I just discovered that somewhere in the convoluted process of getting the file from SoundRecorder to tumblr the first line got lost... Why didn't anyone say anything?! Corrected version coming shortly!
Corrected version can be found at http://kalynaanne.tumblr.com/post/111933243197/ok-completely-new-post-because-the-other-one because tumblr apparently won't let me fix this one *rolls eyes*
Ok. I figured that if I did the lullaby from Shadows, that meant I should also do Shallan's lullaby from Words of Radiance. I sat down and messed around with it until I came up with a tune I like, so, here, have another cosmere lullaby.
Alloy of Law: make Sherlock and Watson vigilantes from the wild west and then send them to a steampunk city where they acquire a brilliant but somewhat naive badass girl apprentice. Oh, and they all have magic.
So. I found my way to tumblr when I first discovered Brandon Sanderson's books. As a result, this, my main, was all Sanderson all the time. Tumblr won't let us change which blog is the main blog and my brain won't let me make this blog more general, so you'll find my general tumbling (currently including a great deal of Imperial Radch and Murderbot) on my "side blog" RithmatistKalyna.tumblr.com .
