A boring photo of the beach before today's swim. However, it was a great swim. Lowish tide coming in. Stacey Hearl, Campbell McCall and I swam 1 mile. It took us 18 minutes to the turn around and then 33 minutes coming back. Aren't tides wonderful? Helen and I walked from Vikinggar in Largs to the pencil. It was a lovely day. This is a photo taken while we were at the pencil looking across the Clyde to Cumbrae and Arran. (at Largs Pencil Monument)
On the 16th of June seven international clean energy organizations launched a major new campaign aimed at keeping nuclear power out–as in completely out–of all negotiations at the upcoming COP 21 climate talks in Paris in December. To me this is a really bad idea. Existing Nuclear technologies are the best way to decarbonise electricity production. Newer technologies, Small Modular Reactors especially, have the ability to decarbonise electricity production as well as other sectors. Two sectors that come to mind immediately are process heat and marine transport.
These are the Group Photos from the New Year’s Day Swim at RWSABC in Greenock. 24 of use went into the water to get wet. The majority went for a 5 to 10 minute swim. Gerry Malone, Ernie Currie and Colin Campbell went for the “normal” 2 km swim. Conditions were rough with a north wind making it bouncy.
Helen and I returned from our holiday in Prague last night. We had a good time, I’ve returned feeling relaxed and somewhat recharged.
I liked Prague a lot and I was thinking about what makes it such a nice city (for tourists like us).
In no particular order:
1 - Friendly and honest people. 2- A great city centre for walking around. 3 - Good public transport. 4 - Green space easily accessible from the city centre. 5 - Good affordability. 6 - A compact city centre with plenty of bars, pubs and Restaurants.
I will discuss this more in my future blogs.
Yum Yum Helen's made pumpkin pie 😊
Tonight's sunset at the Boat Club.
After this morning's open water swim the blood was rushing back towards the skin. I was on my own and swam 417m in 13:28. Highest tide coming in. Northerly wind onto the beach gentle breeze Force 3. Water temperature 8 degC #openwaterswimming #rwsabc #greenock (at The Royal West of Scotland Boat Club)
WHAT more could one want? It is cheap and simple to extract, ship and burn. It is abundant: proven reserves amount to 109 years of current consumption, reckons BP, a...
This article from The Economist magazine dated April 19th to 25th April suggests that Coal is going to play a large role in providing electrical power for he foreseeable future. This will be especially true in poorer countries. What we need is to make nuclear cheaper than coal.
Boxing Day Swim 🏊 - High tide, Force 7 High Winds Near Gale - David, Ernie and I didn't go far. We went up The Esplanade for around 100m the went towards the MOD slip and then back. We were in for around 12 minutes. The squalls and spray when you in the water are exciting. Water temperature 8.2degC (at The Royal West of Scotland Boat Club)
