— Slytherin’s Reputation As The Evil House Is Being Fixed In-universe

— Slytherin’s reputation as the evil house is being fixed in-universe

— There are Discworld references

— Harry is a Star Wars fan

— Various aspects of magic & magical society that seem weird, illogical and/or unreasonably underused in canon are treated reasonably (though in some cases by Harry only)

— Voldemort’s plotline will make you sad while still despising him

— Harry is constantly comparing his story to LotR

— everything and everyone is crazy but will make sense in the end (probably)

— the author is so smart but sometimes shows his Crazy Fan side

Recently I got recommended a lot of videos criticizing Harry Potter and no videos talking about how great Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is instead. Like, if you want a better version of the story, just read this fanfiction by Eliezer Yudkowsky.

In his AU:

-Harry gets adopted by Petunia and an Oxford professor and is homeschooled in science

-When he gets into the wizarding world he is irritated by the society’s bigotry and backwardness and wants to change the world by fusing magic and science

-He is accepted into Ravenclaw and so is Hermione

-He befriends Draco instead of Ron and slowly makes him question his beliefs and actually become a better person

-Hermione has a lot of screen time and her own arcs including the one where she fights against misogyny in heroism

-there’s a homestuck reference

-there’s a death note reference

-at some point Harry bullies the sorting hat

-Voldemort (or rather his actual identity) is a well-written character with interesting backstory and goals

- the plot point where Harry is Voldemort’s horcrux plays a big role in this

-at some point Voldemort uses a gun

-there’s a scientific explanation to how spirits and patronus work

-there’s an mlp reference

-one of the hocruxes is in space

-the Philosopher’s stone is canonically created by two lesbians and one of them is baba yaga

Only right now am I discovering plenty of shows of different degrees of “old”. I may not be making a lot of fan content, but be sure I need it.

I don't wanna @ anyone because I understand how fast things seem to move in today's landscape of streaming shows dropping entire seasons in one day, and networks pumping out new series constantly to try to attract more subscribers with no intent to actually maintain those shows over time but I just saw someone self-deprecatingly lament that they are still thinking about a show that ended almost a year ago, making fan art and playlists for it, and I want to be very clear:

you can still create fanworks when it comes to old media!! PLEASE do!! there are always going to be new fans who will appreciate it, and veteran fans who are dying for new content and new perspectives. also, less than a year is NOTHING. the original Star Trek series was on TV six decades ago and there are still people losing their minds over it, writing stories and reblogging gifsets daily, and that's only one example.

a fandom lasts as long as there are people who love a thing, even if it's only a handful of people. love what you love and write and draw and make gifs and playlists about it!

For evidence that Terry Pratchett understood humanity on a deep and fundamental level, look no further than the breed history of Dalmatians, because that shit is straight out of Discworld.

Conclusion: someone at the UU ships toxic yaoi. Probably the Senior Wrangler.

(From what we know about wizards, any possible couple that might find themselves under mistletoe will inevitably be toxic)

"Tell me, Senior Wrangler, we never invited any women to the Hogswatchnight Feast, did we?"

"Of course not, Archchancellor," said the Senior Wrangler. He looked up in the dust-covered rafters, wondering what had caught Ridcully's eye. "Good heavens, no, they'd spoil everything, I've always said so."

"So why, every year, do we hang a damn great bunch of mistletoe up there?"

"well, er... it's... well, it's... it's symbolic, Archchancellor."

(scenes from Hogfather feat. the Senior Wrangler NOT beating the allegations)

I hate it when people ask me what genre of music i listen to because i genuinely have no clue. It's called Music I Like genre. The best genre out there

Random things that are canon in Sherlock BBC that we don’t talk about enough:

- Sherlock is friends with BANKSY

- Sherlock and John have played board games together in their free time (and it went to shit)

- Sherlock taught John to waltz behind closed curtains on Bakerstreet more than once AND they were caught by Mrs Hudson

- John has an alcoholic lesbian sister he doesn’t get along with

- John thinks that Sherlock is autistic

this is a confession to the star wars fandom because I have to get this off my chest. last summer just for fun I taught myself to read aurebesh and. you fanartists have Got to Continue putting the most Hilarious stuff into the background of your art because it is literally my favorite thing

here’s a couple of excellent things I’ve read since I started keeping a list just last month:

- “I hate drawing lightsabers”

- “Idk what to put here”

- “stupid fucking sign”

- “eat paste, it’s good”

- an entire news article on a phone screen which I actually found really impressive

- a few funny misspellings but the best one so far was ahsoka somehow becoming “asock”

- wanted poster of obi wan that read “wanted for fashion crimes”. the caption translated it as “wanted for high treason”. like blatantly lying to my face. love it.

- door on a ship was labeled “cake storage”

- “shopping list: frogs, hair gel, lightsaber polish”

and my personal favorite:

- “if you’re reading this you’re a fucking nerd”

Sometimes my brain’s like “hey, here, out of nowhere, a name that’s absolutely perfect for your character!" But most times it’s like "no. nope. this one sounds ugly. this one doesn’t feel like her. this one spells ugly. this one’s nice but transliterates awfully. she doesn’t look like this one. I hate this one for no reason. This one’s good but I already have a character named like this in the same work"

Also for me it’s certainly not the single most stressful part, but it is a special kind of stress to have someone on your character list who is just a description without a name. I’m not even talking about actually writing someone yet unnamed.

why is it that naming characters is the single most stressful part of writing? i’ll spend weeks drafting intricate plots and creating entire fake histories for countries, but the moment i have to name someone, my brain is like, 'uhhhh… kevin?' i can’t have my epic fantasy hero named kevin! but then i overthink it and end up with something like arithalas drakemourn, which sounds like a bad d&d oc. there is no winning.

anyway sound off. at what stage do ppl think Han figured out the Force was real. the boring answer is after seeing Obi-wan vanish but i think he could rationalise that away as his eyes playing tricks on him. what do we think.

All hail deep, eternal friendship and Professor Tolkien who showed us such good examples of it

I think one of the great things about the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit as well is the fact that while historically the most moving relationships in a narrative are usually romantic or familial. The Lord of the Rings is one long treatise in praise of friendship. The nearest relatives in the Fellowship are cousins. The parent-child relationships and the variation of uncle-wards that is Theoden and his sister's children are fraught with dysfunction. If we set aside the periphery relationships like Sam and the Gaffer and Beregond and Bergil there is upheaval in all the parent child relationships.

But friendship now that is wholesome and exemplified in all the races. For men there is Eomer and Boromir and their bonds with Aragorn. Hobbits of course speak for themselves throughout the whole trilogy and the Hobbit. There is mourning for lack of connection between Mirkwood and Lorien for the elves. A yearning for renewed friendship. And of course the standout friendship of them all for its unlikeliness if for no other reason. Legolas and Gimli. A friendship so fast and secure that Legolas cannot consider leaving Middle Earth for his rightful place in the west without bringing Gimli with him. A dwarf. The race that was not meant to be made and certainly no dwarf has ever been even near the undying lands and Legolas knows this.

The fact that friendship can be just as eternal as a marriage vow or the bonds of blood is something that doesn't get a lot of coverage in literature and yet it permeates the life of all the heroes in The Lord of the Rings. From Aragorn to Samwise
