NOTE: Hello all! Just wanted to update you with my current writing progress so far. I just finished writing my first chapter of S!CoBL and Iโm posting it here to tumblr!
I donโt currently have a schedule for when Iโm going to release this series, cause this is my first project of this scale so Iโm just kinda writing as I go along. I already have all the major story beats planned out, itโs just a matter of turning plot points into actual writing lol.
But I also just wanted to say that I actually formatted this story in a strange wayโฆ You see my writing sample is written in first person pov however, this story I originally wrote in screenplay format and translated into third person. So hopefully you all will like this style of writing too, as it comes a lot more natural to me than trying to force myself into first person pov writing.

INT. SUPERSTORE - NIGHT (YEARS AGO)
A young Billy, no older than four, walks alongside a shopping cart. His mother, Marilyn, an exasperated woman in her early twenties, fumbles through her purse as her shopping cart comes to a full stop. She glances over at Billy.
"Stay right here, baby. I'll be back in a minute."
Unbeknownst to Billy, Marilyn was a local dealer who was currently low on cash as a young mother. She had reluctantly brought Billy along for a late-night "meetup," uneasy about leaving him home alone at his age.
As Marilyn hurried away, Billy's attention was lured by the laughter of two children engrossed in play with action figures and dolls. Their voices echoed through the aisles.
"Woah! What toy is that?"
"It's Star Commander Ultra! He's the bravest hero in the galaxy.โ
The child's younger sister chimed in, trying to brag about her doll as well, in hopes of getting some attention from Billy and her brother.
"Well, my doll is Princess Butterfly Sparkle Glitter, and she's the bravest and the coolest in all twelve galaxies!โ
"There's only one galaxy, Macy." He said, as his eyebrows dropped. Seemingly familiar with his sister's need to be the center of attention in every situation.
Amidst their banter, they agree to let Billy in on their game as they go back to running around the store shouting and having fun.
Suddenly, a mother's voice pierced through the aisles, in an attempt to round-up her children. She shouted across the aisle that she was done shopping, and they were leaving. The children hastily said goodbye to Billy as they ran off to catch up with their mother.
Now left completely alone, Billy's anxiety surged. He realized he wasn't able to find the shopping cart his mother had told him to wait by.
Roaming a handful of aisles, his confusion and panic grew as he felt every second scrape by.
As Billy hastily rounded a corner, he collided with the legs of a police officer, falling to the ground, stopping his search completely. A tall blonde woman who was looking down at him in surprise.
"Oh, whoopsies! Haha, that's alright bud. You okay?"
Although Billy didn't respond, he read the name that was sewn into her uniform, Lindsay.
Officer Lindsay helped him to his feet. Her concern deepens as she looks around the store, realizing this child is unattended. She takes it upon herself to help Billy find his mother.
As Billy and Officer Lindsay roam the store looking for Marilyn, they eventually find her in a heated discussion with some of the employees at the store. Marilyn's face drops. She is suddenly pale with shock as she realizes her son is being escorted by a police officer.

EXT. SUPERSTORE - NIGHT
Marilyn was led away, leaving Officer Lindsay to return to Billy. She knelt down to his level.
"Hey bud, how do you feel about coloring books? If you want we could color together in this book that I brought with me.โ
Billy doesnโt reply. He just stands in silence looking around, seemingly confused about the situation, not sure where his mother is.
โI could really use your help with coloring these tigers, if you wanted to help me out.โ Officer Lindsay continued.
Billy agreed, oblivious to the chaos around him. He followed Officer Lindsay's lead, as she was a calming distraction from the situation.
The last thing Billy remembers is Officer Lindsay taking his hand and leading him away from the arrest of his mother.

INT. SOCIAL WORKER'S OFFICE - DAY ( PRESENT DAY )
The sounds of the night slowly start to fade into the background. Blending together until they make a voice. The voice of Mrs.Kelly, Billyโs social worker.
โBillyโฆBillyโ
A now teenage Billy lightly flinches as he snaps back into reality, realizing he is being called.
"Come on in, Let's talk." Mrs.Kelly said as she beckoned him into her office with her hand.
Her office was well-worn, a place Billy had been countless times. The room filled with a light clutter everywhere. Filled to the brim with books,binders and paperwork she was in the middle of sorting through.
Billy enters the room and tosses his backpack onto one of the open seats in her office, and with a few stretches, made himself comfortable. It was clear he was in no rush to sit down.
"Ah, how could I forget, ol' reliable. Billy said as he gestured towards the chairs in front of Mrs.Kelly's desk as he looked over at her with a slight grin. "You know, instead of you guys spending all this time and money trying to put me into a foster home, I could just live here instead."
The air grew charged as they faced each other.
Mrs.Kelly's patience was wearing thin, worn down by Billy's snarky tone.
"Billy, you know we're running out of options here. Iโm really gonna need you to get your act together."
Billy's eyes narrowed, a touch of bitterness seeping into his voice.
"Uh-huh."
"You already know why youโre here," she continued.
"I do."
"And you already know what Iโm gonna say."
"True."
With a casual crossing of his arms, he settled further into his chair, poised to mimic Mrs.Kelly as they spoke in unison.
"That I brought you in here today to tell you that youโve been assigned to a new foster home," they synchronized.
She let out a sigh, clearly accustomed to Billyโs attitude.
"Look, I know it's been a tough year for you. But this time has to be different."
She locked eyes with Billy, her authoritative gaze cutting through his playful exterior.
"This time, you've got to give them a chance."
Billy's gaze hardened, his frustration simmering beneath the surface.
"A chance? How many chances do I have to give? How many 'homes' will I go through before you guys actually start listening to me? I donโt need a fake family to play pretend with. I have a family, I have a mom, theyโre out there, looking for me."
Mrs.Kellyโs expression softened, a mix of empathy and weariness.
"Billy, weโre not going to have this discussion again, weโve been over this. You can do whatever you want when youโre 18, but for now the state is responsible for you. Which means Iโm responsible for you, and I need you to try and play along, just a little longer."
Billy's guard wavered for a moment, temporarily exposing his feelings of rejection and hopelessness that lie beneath his sarcastic tone.
"But Iโm tired of it. I just wanna make my own decisions instead of you guys and your 'agency' shoving fake families and broken homes onto me like Iโm some sort of charity case."
Mrs.Kelly leaned back, letting out a sigh. She knew she was dealing with a determined young man whoโd clearly had a rough start to life.
"Youโre not a charity case, youโre a young man. A young man with a bright future ahead of you, and weโre just trying to do whatโs best for you."
She paused, ensuring she had Billyโs attention despite his sudden drop in bravado.
"Iโm trying to do whatโs best for you."
Billy nodded, a hint of reluctant acknowledgment. Then, with a sharp scoff, he adds,
"Yeah, I've heard that one before too."

Hey, look itโs Mary Marvelโผ๏ธโผ๏ธ
I finished this drawing on my phone while I was at work so I didnโt have my normal โKirby dotโ brush that I normally use to fill in their chest emblem. But thatโs okay I drew these dots by hand!!
Yeah originally I was gonna give her a golden chest emblem but then it was just too much yellow in one spot so it didnโt look good,,, Maybe Iโll change Freddyโs color from a silvery blue to yellow just to spice things up, so they donโt all look the same lol.
But yeah I made her outfit white because sometimes itโs red, but Billy is red. It made sense for both of them to be red when they were canonically twins. However, in a lot of stories they arenโt lol.

Okay, I know I was gone for a little bit, sorry about that lol. I was out of state for the holidays and I have a hard time writing/drawing when Iโm not in my comfort areas haha >_<.
But I wanted to share this. These are my little โscene cardsโ I guess you could call them. They just give you guys a little bit of insight to the anatomy of my Shazam story that Iโm outlining right now!

I have these scenes in a lot more detail but I canโt show it to you guys because it looks like this lol.
But Iโm posting this now because Iโm just opening the floor to comments, suggestions, or questions for this story so far. :^)
I think some things that might be confusing is that I did technically write in a redemption arc for Black Adam. Which I know might be controversial for some, but his main โbeefโ with Billy is that heโs offended that The Wizard chose a new champion after he got banished to the furthest star in the galaxy.
But then once heโs defeated itโs revealed that The Wizard was actually kinda conflicted about having to banish him and Billy wasnโt meant to replace him. Billyโs much happier with his foster family on earth than being like The Wizards adopted son lol.
I still want him to be โpunishedโ at the end for trapping The Wizard and Tawny to try and take over The Rock of Eternity. So my solution for that would be to give him a โCrown of Thornsโ that nerf his powers a lot, but still keep him in his โmagic formโ. Since you know,,, if he were to say โShazamโ and revert to his mortal form he would die of old age almost immediately,,,,
But yeahh idk, let me know what you guys think. Right now Iโm working on writing scene 3. If any of you guys want to read scene 1 & 2 I have them completed, theyโre just in screenplay/script format lol.
Maybe Iโll convert them soon. Who knows?

My Rock of Eternity work in progress! ๐ชจโก๏ธ๐ ๐ดโจ
When I post the final for this Iโll probably write a little blurb of text that explains some stuff about The Rock of Eternity, and how itโs kinda a physical manifestation of The Wizardโs heart.

Making slight tweaks to my current art style,, as in trying to use line weight? Iโm still experimenting with it so I thought I would make another Freddy & Billy drawing because I need practice drawing character interactions as well lol. Much to learn, as always lol :p

Working on a Freddy re-design as well, but this oneโs a bit of a rush job because itโs like 1am and I really wanna go to bed LOL
I also have some concept models done of the Rock of Eternity as well. I want it to kinda be a floating island diamond-shape looking thing. The bottom half of the diamond kinda like the floating islands in Steven Universe, and then the top part being kinda grassy mountains helping to make the diamond shape,,, I also need to add the little thrones in there. I was also thinking of maybe a little cave area in the mountain, but idk yet. I obi donโt have the skills to model that so I would have to draw it all by hand,,, so weโll see~ โจโก๏ธโค๏ธ
Here is a new Shazam design for my version of the story!! โก๏ธ
My idea was to have the adult Shazam look a lot more like his child-counterpart. I think this will help both characters seem like the same person, with the same internal struggles. Because Shazam isnโt Shazam without Billy Batson, ya know?
That baggage from his past, and his struggles in the foster care system breeds empathy within the character, and I think that empathy is a good way to keep a hero motivated to do good.
I was thinking on how I was gonna write the connection Between Shazam and Billy. So far what Iโve been thinking is Billyโs internal struggle in the story is that heโs worried that he is unlovable and he will never find a place where he truly belongs. Thatโs kinda why he has so much urgency to find his birth mother, because heโs craving that support system he had for the first few years of his lifeโฆ

These feelings of worry,shame,guilt and overall just kinda feeling like a burden accumulates within him over the years as he grows up in the system. Being passed on from house to house with pretty much all of the adults in his life stripping him of any personal autonomy he had. Like the adults in his life donโt really care about his wants, and they never listen to his concerns. They just keep passing him around his entire childhood.
That lack of stability, and that lack of autonomy really make him feel isolated and sad.
Billy is in distress that he pretty much has no say in where he lives, whoโs in his life, or even the amount of personal items he gets to own. And he feels kinda helpless that his fate is kinda being locked in this cycle until he turns 18. Because every time he runs off, he gets caught. Then heโs back at square one.
Then this connects to Shazam because once he receives the wizardโs powers he becomes an adult. Then in that moment he realizes he does have a lot of power he never had before, both in the sense of flight and super strength, but more importantly the power to make his own decisions.
However, since he is a child he does kinda turn towards the more reckless side of things. Like how we see in the 2019 movie. Using his powers to ditch school, test his abilities, finding ways to get money, and then learning how to buy things he wants. He kinda leans heavy into these habits at first because heโs never been presented with an opportunity to make his own decisions before. Heโs never really had the opportunity to do what he wants.
Then over the course of the story shows Billy starting to navigate all the freedom heโs been given. Watching him learn to use his powers for more selfless acts of heroism instead of only for his own self interests.
Having his background be one of a kid growing up with no control in his life, knowing those feelings of isolation and helplessness makes him more empathetic. Heโs an โadultโ thatโs a lot more empathetic towards children and the less fortunate because he understands them.
Heโs more willing to stop and listen to their concerns.
Heโs more willing to help them solve their issues, because he is one of them.
Just finished Darlaโs slightly older design! Now sheโs with everyone else, yay! Sheโs about 15 in this design so all the ages go, Darla 15, Mary 16, Billy 16, Freddy 18. And Iโm done with the main cast now yippieeee! ~โจ
Note: I always say โabout (age)โ when I post designs, because since I have birthdays for all of them it really depends on the time of year Iโm writing In. ๐

Work in progress for my Shazam story. โก๏ธ
This is a scene towards the start of the story, right after the prologue actually. Itโs the scene where Billyโs social worker is trying to explain to him that sheโs running out of foster homes for him to go to and is trying to get him to behave.
These are very quick sketches however, I think itโs probably for the best because one of the hardest things for me to learn is how to incorporate storytelling into my art lol. Which is funny because I enjoy both writing and drawing. So yeah,,,,
But anyways,, again not really sure how I want to tell this story? Like at first I was set on a screenplay for sure, but then I was like,,, maybe I should just write it as a fanfic? Because Iโve had nights where Iโve written 8,000 words in one night,,,, but those are rare. But ALSO also I really do enjoy the visual aspects of a comic,,,, but a comic would for sure take me the longest and require the most focus,,,,
Iโm still not sure at this point, but I guess Iโll have to decide soon if I want people to eventually be able to enjoy my take on Billy Batsonโs origin story,,,,,

Darlaโs role in the story is to be the empathetic peacekeeper of the group. She is the sibling that hates conflict and tries to see all aspects of a situation to help find solutions to problems.
She is there to remedy situations and get everyone on the same page whenever her siblings start to argue.
She is the sibling that opens her heart to Billy first despite his cold personality, and welcomes him with open arms.
LESSON OVERVIEW

Darlaโs lesson throughout the story is showing Billy the importance of giving people second chances and understanding people before you place judgement on them.
Helping him understand that in order to be a good hero and a good brother he has to open up and let others in. Over the story Billy has moments where he tries to fly solo, but Darla is always the first one to welcome him back despite his mistakes.
Darlaโs loving and sweet personality gives Billy insight into how itโs important to give people second chances and intervene when others are in trouble. Billy has done noble things in the past however, Darla is a living reminder of why these values matter.
