thereโ€™s so much wrong with this place. everything, actually.ย

as if the void dimensionโ€™s very existence wasnโ€™t crime enough, chrissy stumbled down a hill covered in vines that appeared locked in a neverending battle with themselves, writhing and thrashing until too exhausted to continue. the ground crawled, the sky grumbled. unearthly animal voices chittered nearby every time chrissy so much as scuffed her sneakers too loudly.ย

if her nerves werenโ€™t completely shot by the time she escaped, theyโ€™d be numb enough to fool her into thinking they were useless.ย

Thereโ€™s So Much Wrong With This Place. Everything, Actually.ย

like the sky itself was ill, it regularly spat out streams of bloodstained lightning to wash the stale air in a rainbow of bruised indigo across sickly green, mocking her own bruised body - or complementing it. every sound echoed only to disappear moments afterward. even the echoes seemed doomed to die mere yards from their origin.

time burnt away meaninglessly the further chrissy walked on....and on.....and on untilย  โ€”ย  yes, finally, main street snuck into view. hawkins always seemed so small from behind a set of wheels. just another pint-sized half awake middle american town that only stirred on weekends and holidays, where people still used the wordย โ€œnewfangledโ€ and the church bell still told the time better than anyoneโ€™s watch. family businesses rarely closed because the family seldom moved. home was familiar. home was predictable, safe.ย

chrissy had never been more sure of anything in her life when she stared down at the rotten facsimile of hawkins and reminded herself it was the farthest thing from safe.ย

what she ought to have done was make a beeline for the police station. that would have been the wisest, smartest thing. but at the sight of the mayorโ€™s office a few blocks away, a wall of exhaustion hit chrissy harder than a freight train. all that walking after an impromptu resurrection did nothing for her stamina and the thought of rest was enough to make her want to burst into tears. enough for her to creep up the office steps and gently pry open the door. inside was silent as a graveyard and twice as dark. dust motes floated in in the air, swirling into eddies while she tiptoed down the central hallway. going up the stairwell was tantamount to courting disaster - even keeping her back to it felt risky. then the smallest stroke of luck materialized in a plush (if musty) chaise lounge tucked away in an office. with some difficulty chrissy managed to drag it all the way back to the front doors and scoot it against the wall adjacent. this way, nothing could get in or out without her knowing. the best she could ask for at the moment. all that was left was to lay down, find an angle that didnโ€™t exacerbate the shooting pain in her shoulder, and attempt to sleep.ย

pain lingered no matter how she arranged her limbs, but sleep... sleep crept up on her without warning. the world fell into darkness so quickly that when chrissy awoke it was with a twitch of terror. she couldnโ€™t remember toeing the familiar, milky line between consciousness and the void.

everything looked exactly the same as when sheโ€™d arrived.ย

had hours passed? had days?

without any shift in light and no sound from the church bell or town center clock, chrissy might as well have been in the same place forever. such a thought blasted shivers into her every extremity. time to move along. this place gave her every species of the creeps ever invented.ย

the next two blocks to the police station were small potatoes compared to her haunted trek from the creel house. her body still ached with every bend in her stride. rest had done nothing for her pain, only giving her sufficient energy to push through. well, that was something, wasnโ€™t it?ย

despite the flickering hope the notion of weapons provided, that light was dashed by the rattle of very secure locks on every door chrissy tried. she slammed her good shoulder into all of them; none did so much as tremble in their frames. the windows were barred even if she could find a rock to smash the glass. in the end, all she had were her frantic fists and shouts of panic that she knew, chrissy knew, were more foolhardy than anything else. any number of the nightmares lurking in shadows that she never spotted could hear her and come rushing out, discovering the easiest prey to ever wander in their vicinity. her yelps were careless and scratched like sandpaper over the tender meat of her throat, but she couldnโ€™t seem to stop. sheโ€™d come all this way for nothing otherwise. this couldnโ€™t be for nothing. she couldnโ€™t let it stop here.

Thereโ€™s So Much Wrong With This Place. Everything, Actually.ย

hours into the unclear future, chrissy might catch herself realizing that infinite reasons could exist for pink cheeks and dreamy silences in a packed kitchen hot from crowded bodies guzzling light beerย and gossip like air, but in the moment she was only capable of joyously giggling,ย ย โ steve, youโ€™re so pink!ย โžย  a small poke to his cheek came after, followed in quick succession by an exultant gasp and a poke to a nearby eddieโ€™s cheek.ย ย โ you both are! โž

image

such a sight was inexplicably tickling with a plastic cup of punch or two in her system (never more than that, howeverย  โ€”ย  playing it safe has become more comforting than boring) that lent a glowing edge to even the harshest of lighting and noises. like all of them were sucked into the kind of classic 80โ€™s film chrissy used to romanticize within an inch of its life. with her shoulder sunk into eddieโ€™s side and halfway beaming at steve, an argument could be made. brat pack, eat your heart out. they didnโ€™t have safe places like she did, to be drawn back to every night like twin homing beacons. they werenโ€™t laughing like she could these days.ย

a slow, loose dawning still managed to roll over the former cheerleader, cooling a little of her own halfway inebriation.ย  โ itโ€™s been a while, right? since we had fun like this? โ€˜cuz it feels good. โž ย

โ€œso um. i saw you going to the woods after school, @greenscrunchyโ€ย  ย itโ€™s out of the blue, smack dab in the middle of the first break theyโ€™ve gotten. the big game is tonight, so if thereโ€™s any time to cram in as much practice as possible, this is it.ย  ย โ€œwhatโ€™s up with that?โ€ย  ย thereโ€™s no judgement, but tatum does have to ask โ€ฆ what the hell. with the amount of people that have gone missing from their quiet town in the past three years, taking a shortcut through the forest seems like an awful idea.

image

sheโ€™s been practicing. starting from before the first bell rang when she slipped the hurried note into the slats of a forbidden locker until almost running from the woods like a bat out of hell. her thoughts wrote the script over and over throughout the rest of the afternoonย so that when she opens her mouth the story comes out smooth. at least, she hopes itโ€™s smooth enough that tatum, with with her watchful gaze sharper than a scalpel, will buy it.

chrissy hates lying, but it comes naturally. itโ€™s how she can survive until summer.ย

ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  โ meditating. iโ€™ve been trying it out before these last few games. โžย  her expression weaves together a concerted effort to keep her smile from wobbling or seeming fixed, but the many yearsโ€™ previous practice for that too is a hail mary that's yet to fail her.ย  โ itโ€™s supposed to help with focus and relaxation. โžย  chrissy shakes both pompoms sheโ€™s clenched in one hand with a grin.ย  โ doing the opposite of cheering before a game actually helps! and i need to stay focused for the girls, so.... โžย  all the narrowness of her shoulders might end up disguising none of the helplessness tucked into her shrug.ย ย  โ for the championship. are you excited?ย  โž

they should never put this in the kitchen, chrissy thought through her hazy bubble cloud of wine cooler and winter break-fueled good mood. it was almost a languid sort of cheer that had hit her this late in the evening; she rarely stayed this late at parties but the smiles in every direction passively persuaded her to let the night drag on further and further until everyone would inevitably become a half-drunk and sleepy mess of laughter and jokes that never quite landed yet sounded hilarious regardless. but sheโ€™d forgotten about the trademark seasonal trap the party host had hung in a kitchen entryway, beyond which the siren song of a sofa crooned chrissyโ€™s name.ย ....right - sheโ€™d been meaning to watch out for the mistletoe earlier. and missed her cue to glance up before nearly sliding past nancy right under it โ€” until she noticed nancyโ€™s movement grind to a halt, too.ย stupid little plant thing.

before her already alcohol-pinked cheeks could bloom any darker, chrissy giggled with all the air she had left in her lungs. oh, this would be easy, actually. no problems here.

ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  โ oops, i guess! merry christmas break, nancy. โžย  there was no needing to think her plan through twice before swinging an arm about nancyโ€™s shoulders and giving her a smack square on the cheek. perfect.ย  โ that counts, right? since weโ€™re under here, i think we should make the rules. โžย ย

whenever there's a moment to generate clear thoughts inside the falsely labyrinthian halls of hawkins high, chrissy has begun wondering if the pathways of her brain have been rewired in the exact same turns and corners. stupid, since almost four years have passed in this place and that seemed hardly enough time for her life entire to be remolded. but something as mundane as high school, evidently, did have that power. a sparse but reportedly all-powerful adult presence mixed with still developing young minds hungry for some kind of independence created a strange kind of panic room masquerading its every wall as windows. there was nowhere to go but in until you were cast out on your butt to be the mystical mature everyone said was required after twelfth grade. a place where all students were asked to be older but treated younger, at its most basic.

at the eventual end of her illustrious career as a hawkins high elite, chrissy was sure she'd be picking out splinters of the school's influence for years.

a new shard lodged itself in hidden places she'd doubtlessly discover later when a voice shattered the brief silence she'd wrapped herself in. it made its intrusion gently, but could not escape what it was. despite herself, chrissy jolted.

โ huh?? โž immediately, too sharp. her grimace offered the first apology. โ i โ€” sorry, i was โ€” i mean i wasn't... sorry. i'm okay, yeah. just get lost in my own head sometimes, when stuff here get too loud. probably senioritis, you know? โž

if whoever this polite guy might be wasn't convinced of her sanity, she'd hardly blame him. that had been one of her poorer saves to date. thankfully, the burst of adrenaline cleared her clouded thoughts enough to see his expression. he wasn't exactly in his comfort zone either. time to save what she could of the moment.

โ thanks for checking. โž a swallow. โ i appreciate it. i hope your day hasn't been as weird as mine. โž finally she'd collected enough presence of mind for a real smile and a sentence that sounded spoken by an actual human being instead of a zombie. โ have i passed your table at lunch recently? they somehow change every year. was it the science club, maybe? โž

SONG: DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH - THE NEARLY DEADS

Warren knows he's not exactly social - he's never tried to be. Quite the opposite, in fact. He liked the isolation. It was relaxing. It was safe. (As safe as anything could be, but Hawkins had been pretty quiet, so far.)ย

Social or not, he still knows who this is as soon as he turns the corner. Of course he does - itโ€™s Chrissy Cunningham. Everyone knows who she is. Cheer captain, one of the popular kids. Most people said she was nice, but Warren had never spoken to her. Again, he liked quiet. Not social. All that.ย

But when he sees the look on her face, he freezes. He almost turns on his heel. He definitely looks away. He feels like he shouldnโ€™t be looking at her like this - like nobody should see her like this. Sheโ€™s sad. Chrissy Cunningham is sad. Hypocritical as it is, that feels unnatural. He falters, glances around.ย

well well well. some of the lotr fandom has shown their true colors. i'm both surprised and not surprised at the frankly outlandish amount of complaints that dwarves and elves and hobbits of color seem to have elicited. the rage is more outlandish when you discover the reasons for these complaints are 1) tolkien on occasion neglected to describe skin color which apparently renders everyone pale or 2) nostalgic attachment to the peter jackson films makes it unfathomable to picture the above listed races as anything other than pale/white.

here is all iโ€™ll say about it: A WORLD WITH ONLY WHITE SKIN IS AN INCOMPLETE ONE. yes, even a fantasy world.
