Definitely A Great Summary. Love It.

Definitely a great summary. Love it.

The sad thing to me is that first time you watch it you'll surely miss A LOT of the unspoken. When actually, that's the best part.

the beautiful thing about black sails is that in shape and function it is a show about conversations. a show about talking, a show about dialogues, monologues, the stories told, the war declarations shouted out, the people who are all in their own ways masters of the words. but inherently black sails is a show about things that cannot be said. histories and feelings that cannot be brought to the surface and need to stay unspoken, layers of meaning hidden beneath the text, and the real face of the stories secreted away in between lines. and i think that's so rad

Absolutely true. He absolutely loved them both, even if I'm not sure he already loved Miranda as much as he later did, back then, or as much as he loved Thomas. But the point is that he however respected her (the both of them) deeply, and the fact that this already happenes in a early stage of their romance has even more meaning to me. Thomas was capable of defending himself, because he was a man and because the Earl was his father. He had the chance to speak his mind and be listened (even if he was not). In a way it would have been unpolite and arrogant of James to assume he couldn't and speak in his place. But Miranda could not, 'cause she was a woman and not even with the best reputation, she had not a chance to speak and to be listened and that's way James steps in. But then he starts to speak and you actually see he is doing it for the both of them. And well, I guess that was the moment when both the Hamiltons realized they were actually doomed.

The way James doesn't say anything until Lord Hamilton starts in on Miranda. Yes, he would have inevitably stood up in defense of Thomas, but you can see throughout the dinner scene how he is holding back, staying quiet, allowing Thomas to argue with his father. But it's when Lord Hamilton starts taking potshots, nastily calls Miranda a whore, is when James stands up. His tipping point is when Miranda is disrespected, (it isn't the first time, either) and it's so...so...insane, because he stood up for both of them. Miranda and Thomas. He shot back against Lord Hamilton for Miranda as much as he did for Thomas, because he loved them both.

"She loved the sea for its storms alone, and the green only when it grew scattered among ruins."

G. Flaubert

Miranda Barlow's aesthetic.

I love so much this character and her story and I think she would have liked very much Madame Bovary if she had the chance to read it.

(We all know what was written in that burning letter, don't we? I think it was important to include that too about her)

"What's going on in this house is not a simple affair." ~ she said.

"It is not." ~ he replied.

I think what he really meant here was not "it's something worse", but "it's something more". It's something that changed our whole lives.

Even if I can't help blaming him in this scene for not listening to her, I have to say that his way of feeling things deeply without ever letting them show completely is so precious to me.

This conversation is perfect, seen in the aftermath.

It perfectly depicts these two amazing characters in all their shades.

Absolutely true. Because Flint and Madi were just two birds of a feather. They learned it slowly, through hard experiences I'd say, but they definitely understood it (and each other) by the end of it. How great the two of them would have been in leading that war together! And what greater evidence of this is the knowing look they share after Madi's rescue in ep.XXXVIII?

And the sadness Madi shows at the end, learning of Flint's departure, how true that was! Either she thought he was dead or not, the point is that she felt on her own skin the same desperation and defiance he must have felt seeing their war and all their effort going to waste, because she felt the same -if not worst. She felt that losing that, for him, would have been just like dying, as it was for her.

So yeah, that's why I'll never forget Silver for what he did. He loved her by cutting away her wings, he locked her in a cage just to protect her, and how can you do that to someone whose life is lived in the name of freedom? I can't accept that.

For how I see it, he never deserved her nor her trust.

Y'know, something that's very elucidative to me regarding John Silver's character, and in a way Flint's character, is that despite him not being the one in a romantic relationship with Madi (in fact I believe his dynamic with her is more of a brothers-in-arms, united for the same cause, that later transforms into something bordering on a mentor/pupil dynamic or even almost a father/daughter dynamic but not quite), Flint ended up understanding Madi as person FAR better than Silver ever did, or could.

So much so that Flint knows Madi would never allow anything to jeopardize the start of the war or its success: not her own life, not Silver's life, nor any promises of safety for her people and her people alone in her maroon encampment - nothing. And he's right! Madi herself confirms it to Woodes Rogers toward the end of S04. Silver might have fallen in love with Madi, but he never actually saw her. And if there ever was an instance when he did, I don't think it was voluntary and it only fed into his own selfish desire to protect her at all costs, not just to himself but to her, too.

Silver also knew she would stop at nothing for the revolution, he knew that even if she were to die, they would make a martyr of her and she would have been fine with that because even dead, she would have accomplished what was necessary, which was to make the war explode and the revolution set in motion. Where Silver failed but Flint did not, was that he was more scared of losing her than he was of losing the war. Which is very human for someone who is definitely not as idealistic as either Flint or Madi, but still selfish and in a way, cruel.

Flint and Madi understood each other completely and made this silent pact to do anything to make their plans go forward, always with the intent to keep each other safe whenever possible, but willing to let the other die if all other options had run out, and they would hold no grudges toward each other should it come to that and they happened to survive. And Silver... Silver didn't. He loved Madi with all his heart, but he never understood her. Not enough to respect her wishes, anyway.

It absolutely is one of my favourite episodes too, even if it's so sad. Like...Miranda /shines/ (she always does, but damn, here she is *blinding*) and the closeness between her and Flint is so evident here, two survivors who has become each other's survival until one of them is not anymore.

My goddess, it hurts so much.

Episode 17 Of Black Sails Is Peak Television. It's Arguably My Favorite Episode Of The Show And Miranda's

Episode 17 of Black Sails is peak television. It's arguably my favorite episode of the show and Miranda's death (I didn't put the entire thing because it's too long but it's so fucking great, the scene itself for me starts when she asks about the clock) is my favorite in the history of television: how we are lead to it throughout little moments in the episode, how it happens and the massive implications it has on Flint as a character and in the show itself.

Because this is it, Flint was betrayed a second time. Every time he tries to do the right thing, it backfires. And now he has lost the only person as important to him as Thomas, there is no one who really knows him anymore.

He now has no reason to hold back anymore.

PS: If Gates and Billy made me sad, you wouldn't believe how devastated I feel about Miranda and Thomas.

Work of art. I feel glad to have this artist both in dolls and Black Sails communities. I couldn't wish for anything better (honestly, I never thought I'd have found BS' custom dolls, and instead...what a gift!).

[id: 4 photos showing a doll sized version of james flint’s copy of meditations. 1st photo: a custom flint doll, shirtless in black pants, holds the book in front of him as if showing it to someone. 2nd photo: taken over the doll’s shoulder. The book sits open on a wood shelf (that looks like a desk to the doll) held open by the doll’s hands to the page with the inscription ā€œJames My truest love. Know no shame. T. H.ā€ 3rd photo: the same as the 2nd but this time the book is open to the title page reading ā€œMeditations. Marcus Aureliusā€ 4th photo: also the same but open to a page in the middle of the book, both sides printed with lorem ipsum fake text. End id]

Took a side quest to make flint’s copy of meditations :) My 1st time bookbinding (since an art class in high school) Yay! And i just happened to have a scrap of (genuine!) red leather that was the perfect size for the cover. The pages are printed on paper i tore out of an old book i was getting rid of anyway, and, in the tradition of barbie books, newspapers, etc, each page is printed with lorem ipsum text.
