sooooooo who wants an AU spinaraki fanfic that’s ~95,000 words and is pretty alright, if I do say so myself?

saw a post somewhere wishing for a spinaraki longfic, and my god, I want one too.

then understanding the feeling, I’ve decided to confess that, though I never said anything here on this blog, I’ve been sitting on one since 2019. It was a roleplay-story between me and @happojin-blog, written during MVA. she played spinner, I played Shigaraki. was super fun! and now also got permission to share it with everyone.

it’s a bit outdated because back in April 2019 when we started it, we didn’t have details like Spinner’s age, quirk, backstory; and it was also way before the Kurogiri-Oboro reveal too. So let’s say this story is just very AU.

got plot and romance and murder and gaming and all. slightly wonky formatting because it’s a roleplay; slightly dark in tone, but that’s more just the result of delving into the dystopia that the bnha world is to the downtrodden.

I'm so tired of Spinner being left out and excluded from the League. Put Spinner back in the League please. Make him Himiko's endearingly awkward big brother. Make him Magne's endearingly awkward little brother. Make him worry about Tomura whenever he gets sick and dedicate his time to taking care of him. Let him go to the gym with Jin. Let him argue with Dabi. Let him make video game references. Let him be the only one to understand the gaming references Tomura makes. Let him go skateboarding. Make him stay up late at night playing GTA. Make him a paranormal fanatic, despite him easily getting spooked. Include him in League game night, where he annoys everyone when they play Monopoly because he keeps begging for money just to spend it poorly. Let Jin teach him how to work on cars because Shuuichi's interested in mechanics. Let him playfully call Atsuhiro's magic tricks lame. Let him help Kurogiri wash the dishes after dinner. Make him a hopeless romantic. Make him a source of support for the League. Make the League comfort him whenever he's upset. Make him laugh so hard he cries at a shitty joke Dabi makes. Make him rope Dabi into playing video games with him whenever Tomura's not around even though Dabi sucks at them. Make him want to reconnect with his family, because despite all the shitty things they've said and done to him and them being complicit in the discrimination he faced, he still cares about them and wants them to have a good life. Make him not want to have a birthday party because the greatest gift to him is just being able to hang out with his friends. Make Spinner care so much about his friends. Give the man anxiety. Give the man insecurities. Give the man his friends back.

it's so fascinating to me that dabi & hawks are fraternal foils, yet there's nothing about their dynamic and constellation with endeavor that signifies fraternity, they're in relation to each other as sons of endeavor (emphasis on him, not them). their sense of worth depends of endeavor the patriarch, they center him the way a child centers their parent and it's crazyyy how endeavor indirectly sets up dabi & hawks against each other as filial rivals the way he sets up touya and shoto.

the difference is that touya & shoto have a more tangible rivalry going on while dabi & hawks compete with each other thematically, they have similar experiences with childhood neglect & abuse and choose polar survival strategies so to me, dabi vs. hawks boils down to the dialectics of which post-traumatic survival strategy (fight vs. fawn) leads to the parental attention their inner child desperately craves.

and tbh? idek who actually gets what they wanted or a "kinder" conclusion. dabi dies for the sake of revenge and hawks comes out alive, but it is ultimately dabi who gets to move on from endeavor and focuses on his little brother & the unconditional love he experienced despite everything he put him through, meanwhile hawks is still deeply attached to the endeavor he chose as a pseudo-paternal figure as a 5yo like he doesn't get to move on at all and doesn't receive the fraction of unconditional love that dabi does. it's crazyyy to watch hawks go through all of that and act like nothing happened, as if dabi's presence never challenged his stance on endeavor/abusive men/the way he copes with what happened to him as a child.

and ofc hawks can't do any of that, endeavor as a "redeemable" character only works if hawks is there to remind the reader of his good deeds, which only works if hawks doesn't get to progress and reflect. It's sad but also funny on a meta level because there is a very clear analogy between horikoshi reducing hawks to a tool that suffers from bad writing for the sake of another character's writing and the hpsc reducing hawks to a tool that suffers mentally for the sake of the establishment. (dog motif works so well for hawks but i digress)

idk, one thing i really like about the todoroki subplot is that it's good at showing how an abuser messes with a family's dynamics and renders it dysfunctional, there was no way for touya to be normal about his little brother and ofc he saw shoto's birth and his own death sentence, and there was also no way for dabi & hawks to have a normal relationship either because endeavor is an omnipresent patriarch in their fight. horikoshi barely scratched the surface of dabihawks' dynamic in relation to endeavor and completely ignored it the final arc to ride endeavor a little harder, but the implications are there and i won't let anyone ignore them!!!!!!!!!!!

Shigaraki enters the hideout, walking right up to the bar and sitting on a stool across from Kurogiri.

“Kurogiri, I want a gamer girlfriend.” Shigaraki says, “I need your help.”

Kurogiri calmly sits down the glass he was cleaning, “Have you tried talking to a woman?”

Shigaraki shakes his head, “Not your advice— your help. And no! I have a better idea.”

Shigaraki stands on the roof of a tall building, carefully holding binoculars between his fingers. He peers down at the GameStop across the street. Kurogiri stands beside him.

“I’m choosing the first girl that walks out of that GameStop.” Shigaraki explains.

A mom and her children walk out of the GameStop, the kids all screeching and running around.

“I’m choosing the second girl that walks out of that GameStop.” Shigaraki corrects.

Hours pass and Shigaraki hasn’t moved from his spot where he surveils the GameStop building. Kurogiri had dozed off at some point and is lightly snoring.

“Kurogiri.” Shigaraki says, suddenly and sharply. Kurogiri jolts awake. “This is taking longer than expected. I haven’t seen any girls. Just a bunch of virgin plebs and Spinner.”

Kurogiri pauses to address the irony in that statement, then continues, “Perhaps you should consider a different method- like online dating?” Kurogiri asks.

“I’m banned on all those apps.” Shigaraki says.

Kurogiri tilts his head, “Why—“

“Shh!” Shigaraki says. “I think I see someone.”

You walk out of the GameStop holding packs of pokemon cards and a Shadow the Hedgehog plushy. You start to walk away, nearly tripping over the air. You mumble a slew of curses as you adjust your cat ear headband and keep walking.

Shigaraki places a hand over his chest, “Wow, she’s so cringe… She’s perfect.”

Kurogiri nods, “Very well. Go talk to her—“

“Talk to her??” Shigaraki asks. “Uh, no? I’m going to kidnap her, convince her to join the League, act cold, aloof, and disinterested until she discovers that on the inside I’m just a troubled soul with a bleeding heart and she falls in love with me. Duh! God, it’s like you’ve never read fanfiction before.”

Kurogiri sighs, “The fact that All For One doesn’t pay me for this is the worst crime he’s committed.”

Hi I need to ramble about dabihawks again because what do you mean horikoshi created the perfect characters for the "two sides of the same coin" plot but never used it? What do you mean he created two characters that could've been heros together or villains together but chose the universe where they're apart? What do you mean he created two characters that could've understood each other so deeply but never made them share their worries together? Never make them talk seriously? Never make them realize that they could've helped each other?

Yes dabihawks is toxic but you wanna know why? (Partly) because toxicity is the only thing they've ever known. Their family, their growing up environment, the people they interacted with, their ideals, their opinions, the society: everything in their lives is toxic. So of course it's hard for them to be healthy for each other since they can't even be healthy for themselves.

However, even if a lot of people are saying that they represent the "we make each other worse" trope, I don't really agree (although I respect every opinions don't get me wrong). I feel like if they talked seriously they could've created something new. Both relating on how shitty their fathers were, on the abuse, on the society's marginalization they went through (because yes, Hawks is marginalized and not integrated, try me). Both talked about their dreams of becoming heroes but failing because touya became a villain and keigo became a soldier. Both relating on how difficult it is to express emotions when you lived all your life with people wanting to dictate your every moves and dreams (the commission forcing hawks to exist as they want while endeavor forcing his dream on dabi, but the reverse is also true). They lost trust in everything but could've helped each other to trust again.

They could've been the anchor for each other if horikoshi actually didn't throw their potential away (love you hori but you fucked up on that one). They could've help each other because even though dabi is obssessive he would've listen to someone who when through the same atrocities as him, just like the only people he was able to bound with were the League.

They could've help each other because hawks would've realise that his true will as a hero is not to follow the HSPC but save little children that just wanted to be accepted. Dabi could've help Hawks to get away from the commission while Hawks would've help dabi reconsider his revenge on his family (not endeavor though, but the rest of his family). Dabi would've understand that great heros are doing what they can, but in the current society it's just not enough. And they both would've understand that bad people don't fester the society, the society fester the people.

They could've been the comfort place they were both seeking. They could've understand each other. They might even have brought keigo and touya back.

What a waste.
