How Will The James Webb Space Telescope Change How We See The Universe? Ask An Expert!

How will the James Webb Space Telescope change how we see the universe? Ask an expert!

The James Webb Space Telescope is launching on December 22, 2021. Webb’s revolutionary technology will explore every phase of cosmic history—from within our solar system to the most distant observable galaxies in the early universe, to everything in between. Postdoctoral Research Associate Naomi Rowe-Gurney will be taking your questions about Webb and Webb science in an Answer Time session on Thursday, December 14 from noon to 1 p.m EST here on our Tumblr!

🚨 Ask your questions now by visiting http://nasa.tumblr.com/ask.

Dr. Naomi Rowe-Gurney recently completed her PhD at the University of Leicester and is now working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as a postdoc through Howard University. As a planetary scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope, she’s an expert on the atmospheres of the ice giants in our solar system — Uranus and Neptune — and how the Webb telescope will be able to learn more about them.

How Will The James Webb Space Telescope Change How We See The Universe? Ask An Expert!

The James Webb Space Telescope – fun facts:

Webb is so big it has to fold origami-style to fit into its rocket and will unfold like a “Transformer” in space.

Webb is about 100 times more powerful than the Hubble Space Telescope and designed to see the infrared, a region Hubble can only peek at.

With unprecedented sensitivity, it will peer back in time over 13.5 billion years to see the first galaxies born after the Big Bang––a part of space we’ve never seen.

It will study galaxies near and far, young and old, to understand how they evolve.

Webb will explore distant worlds and study the atmospheres of planets orbiting other stars, known as exoplanets, searching for chemical fingerprints of possible habitability.

In anticipation of the (now virtual) New York Caribbean Week and the annual Labor Day Parade, this August we’re highlighting artworks in the Museum’s collection that celebrate the presence of Caribbean culture and its diasporas.

Jamaican artist Ebony G. Patterson uses lavish surfaces and verdant motifs to entice viewers to contemplate not only the power of beauty and fashion but also historical and contemporary violence against Black bodies. In the monumental three-channel video installation …three kings weep…, a trio of towering young men shed tears as they sit silently before a backdrop of floral wallpaper and fluttering artificial butterflies. The videos play backwards, and as a result the initially shirtless men appear to be slowly dressing themselves in colorful clothing with mixed patterns and gleaming jewelry that draw on the styles of dancehall culture and carnival costuming. Silence is intermittently interrupted by the voice of a boy reciting “If We Must Die,” a sonnet that Jamaican-born writer Claude McKay published in 1919 after a summer of intense racial terror and resistance across the United States. In the final seconds of the more than eight-minute-long triptych, as the men’s sartorial performance ends, each proudly crowns himself with a bandana, a bucket hat, and a pair of reflective glasses, respectively. As in McKay’s poem, these three kings are ready to fight for their dignity.

Come view this work, along with other videos from the Brooklyn Museum’s collection, starting September 9 in an upcoming outdoor screening series—stay tuned for details!

Mondays Suck.

Mondays suck.

Mondays coupled with seasonal affective disorder & holiday blues? Even worse.

Put yourself first and spend some time with a meditation practice. It might sound tough, but 10 minutes isn’t a long time—and sometimes just taking a moment to breathe can make the rest of your day more centered and calm.

Meditation can:

Reduce stress

Control anxiety

Lengthen attention span

Improve sleep

Boost overall health

It’s also free and can be done anywhere, which is why it is one of our favorite forms of self-care 🤗. Give it a try and tune in.

📿Mindful Mondays📿 with our host Jarrick The Floating Yogi for SIFT Meditation at 8am ET

About the class:

Participants will discuss SIFT Meditation and ways to incorporate it into daily life, then meditate with sound bowls from Buddah A Blessing LLC. Meditation simply puts sustained focus on something. SIFT is an acronym for Sensations, Images, Feelings, and Thoughts. SIFT stands for Sensations, Images, Feelings, and Thoughts. This is an excellent technique for youth to scan and get acquainted with their subjective experience. Jarrick will host a Meditation session where users can observe these SIFT’s and the Meditations ability to create space between them, their triggers, and responses. This will also allow participants to feel more confident if their identified triggers were to arise in daily life. SIFT meditation clears up our Mindspace to make more balanced decisions in tense situations.

Meet Jarrick

Mondays Suck.

Jarrick The Floating Yogi has been practicing yoga and incorporating its philosophy into his life since 2014. He’s trained in Power, Dharma, and Ashtanga Yoga and holds a consistent Ashtanga practice to this day. For several years in his younger days, he was in a band, so he quickly took to Cymatics, the effects of sound, frequency, and vibration on matter and consciousness using sound bowls and other instruments. Jarrick was introduced to Yoga through the fanciful world of Japanese Anime. There he found a world of parallels through the teachings and parables. Jarrick’s kind and gentle manner is well suited to lead students of all levels to integrate the lessons learned on our mat into our daily lives.
