A very sad anniversary today. Progress is being made but the cost is too high. âđž
When Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges surrounding his murder of George Floyd, the conversation found on Tumblr (and elsewhere online) reflected two major points:
This is not justice being served. There is no justice in the face of murder, and if there were, it certainly would not be found within the American carceral system. The verdict stemming from this trial will not stop the violence and oppression Black people face at the hands of an over-policed country.
âBlack people donât need reminders that Chauvinâs guilty verdict doesnât mean the fight is over. Itâs okay to celebrate small victories.â
These truths are not at odds with each other. They can, and will, co-exist.
Take a moment today to celebrate George Floyd and his beautiful family. Keep his little daughter in your mind and hearts. If you want to feel a bit of relief that at least one person was found guilty for their hateful, heinous crimeâplease do so. And then remember that it was just one person. Remember that if you are an ally and an accomplice, you must not stop learning. You must not stop fighting for real justice.
Accountability for police killings is rare:
Since 2005, 140 law enforcement officers have been arrested for on-duty manslaughter and murder. Only 8â5%âhave been convicted.
And that doesnât account for the 98% of police killings where there were no arrests for murder or manslaughter.
Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police
And then yesterday, roughly one hour after Nancy Pelosi thanked George Floyd for âsacrificingâ his âlife for justice,â police in Columbus, Ohio shot and killed 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant.
That is not what justice looks like.
Rest in power, George Floyd.
Rest in power, MaâKhia Bryant.

This is it. Itâs December. Only one more month until the year can climb right back into the dumpster fire whence it came. But before the sun sets on this shambolic year, thereâs still one thing left to do.Â

In 2013, when we first introduced Tumblrâs Year in Review, there was no way to know weâd one day be reviewing a year that in no way, shape, or form deserves a formal assessment. Unless 2020 gave you the gift of prescience, you probably didnât expect such a complete disaster of a year, either. Nevertheless, here we are!Â
We all know what didnât happen this year (life), but what did happen in 2020? We tried (and failed) to make sourdough bread, we loved then quickly got bored of a game weâve waited eight years to play, we filled our time with fiction while the real world crumbled around us, and we collectively made binge watching a way of life. If nothing else, 2020 gave us time to explore new hobbies and rekindle forgotten ones.Â
Just as the reality of quarantine began to set in, the world erupted in protest, responding to the killing of George Floyd and systemic issues of racial injustice. Our community took to the streets in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and inspired voters across the United States to fight to have their voices heard. And we did it all while navigating the worst pandemic in over a century. No big deal, right?
This yearâs YIR posts account for a full 365 days, from October 21, 2019 to October 20, 2020. We know the world imploded right after that window closed, and weâll talk about that too, but that wonât be reflected in these lists (sorry, Castiel). Sit back, relax and letâs look back at what happened in 2020.
