โ06 โ08: The first lie
The grandeur of the Clarke Mansion is still evident in the moments before they leave. The staff bustle around, making sure every detail is in place, as you, your family, and Dann prepare to depart for the lavish event at the Ritz.
The golden light of the chandelier in the hallway spills out into the driveway as the sleek black cars pull up, their engines purring softly in the night air. The elegance of the mansion stands in stark contrast to the wild, pulsing energy of the celebration awaiting themโa night meant to showcase Mikeโs latest achievement.
You walk down the grand staircase, a vision in your red dress. As you descend, every step is deliberate, measured, meant to captivate.
Your parents, who were already waiting near the entrance, canโt help but pause in admiration at the sight of their daughter.
But you are too preoccupied with the swirling thoughts in your head to fully bask in their praise. Your brother's harsh words still echo in your ears, but you've done everything you can to mask the weight of them.
Tonight, you need to be untouchable.
Your father approaches you, voice full of pride.
โYou look stunning, darling. No one will be able to take their eyes off you tonight.โ
โAnd you better make sure they donโt, sweetie.โ Your mother in an elegant black dress says brushing a strand of your hair.
You force a smile, though your gaze flicks to Mike standing near the door. You know heโs already prepared for what he perceives as your inevitable fall tonight.
But you wonโt give him the satisfaction of seeing you flinch.
โMaybe you should focus on not embarrassing yourself, YN. Thereโs no room for mistakes tonight.โ He smirks.
You feel your pulse quicken, the familiar sting of his condescending tone cutting through you like a knife. But you don't respond. Not tonight. you've already made up your mindโyou will be perfect, no matter what he says.
Dann, standing quietly in the background, watches everything unfold with a mix of disdain and curiosity. She can feel the heat radiating off you, and for the first time, sheโs not sure if she envies you or resents you.
Still, thereโs a part of her that doesnโt want to get swept up in the endless cycle of praise and punishment that seems to define your world. As the last person to make their way out the door, Dann glances at her mother, who gives her a sweet smile, waving her goodbye.
When the cars finally pull up to the Ritz, the atmosphere shifts entirely. The event is already in full swing, lights glittering, the hum of conversation and laughter spilling out into the cool night air. The building itself looks like a monument to luxuryโtall, majestic, with every surface reflecting the opulence that the Clarke family holds dear.
Inside the car, your family sits in quiet anticipation. Your parents speak in hushed tones, planning their approach to tonightโs gathering, while Mike remains distant, his eyes fixed on the glowing windows of the Ritz.
As the car doors open, the flood of sounds from the celebration pours inโcascading music, the clinking of glasses, and the rhythmic beat of life beyond the door.
You step out first, followed by Mike, parents, and Dann. They make their way up the steps to the grand entrance, where the doormen usher them in with professional smiles. Inside, everything is extravagantโgleaming chandeliers, velvet drapes, and golden accents everywhere.
It feels like a different world entirely.
You adjust your posture, and for a moment, you feel the weight of all eyes on you. This is your world, a place where you can thrive, even with Mikeโs shadow looming over you.
As you step into the grand ballroom, the scent of roses and expensive perfume mixes with the faint aroma of hors d'oeuvres being passed around on silver trays.
The room is alive with conversation and laughter, the hum of wealth and power weaving through the air. Youโre used to thisโthis is where you belong, where youโve always shone. You adjust your dress, a subtle yet powerful statement of the seasonโs trends, and scan the room.
Your friends spot you almost immediately, their polished appearances as perfect as always. They weave through the crowd with ease, their heels clicking against the marble floor as they make their way toward you.
โBabe!โ Mindy exclaims, her eyes sparkling โYou look stunning, as always.โ
โOf course she does,โ Samantha chimes in with a sly grin โWhat else is new?โ
You smile, a perfect blend of warmth and confidence โItโs all about keeping up appearances, isnโt it?โ
Mindyโs gaze shifts past you, her brows arching in curiosity โWait a secondโฆ Is that Dann?โ
All turn, spotting Dann lingering awkwardly near one of the side tables. Sheโs holding a glass of sparkling water like itโs a lifeline, her lavender gown catching the light in a way that draws just enough attention.
โOh my God, it is her. Whatโs she doing here?โ
You shrug with a practiced air of indifference โMother invited her. You know how she getsโalways so kind and generous. She thought it would be nice to show some appreciation for Dann helping around the house.โ
Mindyโs lips press into a thin line, and the others barely hide a snicker โKind of her,โ She says, her voice dripping with sarcasm โBut seriously, babygirl, what were you thinking, letting her wear a dress from a collection from years ago? She looks ridiculous.โ
You feign innocence, a soft laugh escaping your lips โWho am I to deny her a chance to feel special?โ
Sam smirks โYouโre a saint, baby. Truly. She really sticks out, doesnโt she? Like she doesnโt belong here.โ
โThatโs not my problem,โ You reply smoothly, brushing off the comment with a flick of your hair โMother wanted her here, and Iโm doing my part. Whether or not she fits in is up to her.โ
You glance across the room, your eyes narrowing as they settle on Seonghwa. Heโs standing with his family, dressed impeccably as always, his confident smile lighting up the space around him.
For a brief moment, your polished demeanor falters. Thereโs a lot unsaid between the two of youโmore than anyone in this room could ever guess.
After Wooyoungโs last party you haven't talked.
โShall we mingle?โ Someone asks, breaking your train of thought.
โOf course,โ You reply, slipping your arm through Mindyโs โLetโs remind everyone who really runs this town.โ
As you move through the crowd, your presence commanding attention as always, you can feel the weight of the evening settling in.
Tonight isnโt just about appearancesโitโs about control, power, and making sure everyone, including Mike and Dann, knows exactly where they stand.
โฎ โ
As the evening progresses, the hum of conversation and laughter fills the air, but Dann lingers near the edges of the room, keeping to herself. Her glass of sparkling water trembles slightly in her hand as she tries to blend into the background.
The soft lavender gown you gave her feels alien on her body, and sheโs keenly aware of every glance sent her way.
What she doesnโt realize is that many of those glances are judgmental, the dress silently announcing her as out of place.
It doesnโt take long for Mindy and the other girls to leave you with your parents and notice Dann standing awkwardly by the refreshments table. They exchange a quick look, their eyes gleaming with amusement, and saunter over, their movements purposeful and predatory.
โDann? Oh my god, hi.โ Mindy says, her voice dripping with faux sweetness.
Dann startles slightly but nods, trying to smile โUm, hi.โ
Samantha tilts her head, feigning curiosity โThatโs such aโฆ unique dress youโre wearing. Where did you find it? A vintage shop?โ
Dannโs cheeks burn, but she forces herself to meet their gaze.
โActually, YN gave it to me. She thought it would be appropriate for tonight.โ
Their smiles widen, eyes sparkling with malicious delight.
โOh, our babygirl always so generous. Did YN let you borrow it from her last seasonโs wardrobe? Or was she just trying to make you look like a charity case?"
"I mean, you must feel so lucky to be here with all these important people in such a... dated dress."
โVery retro, not something anyone else here could pull off, but good for you for trying.โ
Dannโs grip tightens around her glass, her stomach twisting. She knows theyโre mocking her, but she refuses to let them see her falter.
โThank you,โ She says evenly โIโll take that as a compliment.โ
Mindy arches an eyebrow, clearly surprised by the response, but Sam isnโt done yet.
โItโs just so sweet of YN to give you something she wouldnโt wear anymore. Such a generous friend, donโt you think?โ
Before Dann can respond, Seonghwaโs voice cuts through the conversation like a blade.
โLadies, there you are. Iโve been looking for you.โ
He appears at Dannโs side, his presence commanding, and tone light but with an edge that makes your friends instantly fall silent.
โHwa,โ Mindy says with a wide smile โWe were just admiring YNโs generosity in lending Dann one of her dresses. So thoughtful of her.โ
Seonghwaโs lips curve into a polite but icy smile โOf course,โ He turns to Dann, his expression unreadable โAre you enjoying yourself?โ
Dann hesitates, but nods โYes, thank you.โ
โGood.โ His eyes flick to your friends, his smile never wavering โIf youโll excuse us, I promised to introduce Dann to some of my friends.โ
All the girls exchange glances but step aside.
โSure, have fun.โ
Seonghwa grabs Dannโs arm and leads her away, his steps measured and graceful. Once theyโre out of earshot, he leans in slightly, his voice low enough that only Dann can hear.
โDonโt let them get to you. Theyโre just bored.โ
Dann glances at him, unsure whether to trust the sudden kindness.
โThanks, I guess.โ
Once theyโre seated with a drink in hand, Hwa turns to Dann, his expression serious.
"So, howโs everything going with Mike? Whatโs the plan for tonight?"
Dann glances around nervously, making sure no one is listening.
"Mike told me to tell Hongjoong a fake address so that he wouldnโt come tonight... he wanted YN to be left alone, humiliated. He said he was going to make sure she felt small in front of everyone during his speech."
Seonghwa nods, pleased with the progress of the plan, but thereโs a certain coldness in his smile.
"And youโre sure heโll follow through? Mike doesnโt usually miss a chance to put YN in her place."
Dann sighs, her hands trembling slightly as she grips her glass.
"I donโt know if I can keep doing this... but heโs promised that tonight, itโll all come together. YN will feel what itโs like to be cast aside."
Seonghwa watches her for a moment, assessing, before leaning back and taking a sip of his own drink.
"Good. Just remember, if you want to be part of this, you have to follow through. All of us are in this together now."
Dann nods, but the weight of her actions starts to sink in. She knows sheโs in too deep to back out now, and yet the guilt gnaws at her.
As Seonghwa continues to chat with her about their plans, she canโt shake the uneasy feeling that the lines between revenge and her own humanity are beginning to blur.

Hongjoong adjusted his cufflinks in the mirror, his expression thoughtful as he glanced at his reflection. The evening was meant to be a special oneโan elegant celebration at the Ritz, an event where he would finally step into the world you navigate so effortlessly.
But something didnโt feel right. Why did your family decide to change the venue so suddenly?
Confused but trusting, Hongjoong went along with the information, believing it was just a miscommunication. He got ready, dressed in the suit you bought him, ready to experience a world beyond his usual scope.
But as he drove, the city fell behind him, the roads winding into quiet, unfamiliar countryside. There was no Ritz, just a few ordinary homes and farmland stretching into the distance.
Panic started to settle in his chest as his phone buzzed, showing no signal. He tried calling you, Dann, and even Wooyoung, but no calls went through.
The further he drove, the more he realized Dann had played a cruel trickโluring him away, leaving him isolated and alone.
Anger surged through him as he realized the intent. Dann had deliberately ensured he wouldnโt make it to the party, making you feel abandoned, unsure, and hurt.
His fists clenched around the steering wheel, frustration boiling to the surface. He needed to get to you, to make sure you knew it wasnโt his choice to stay away.
Desperate, he took a U-turn, his tires screeching slightly on the gravel as he headed back toward the city.
The night was dark, and the streets were eerily quiet as he raced toward the first address you had given him.
โฎ โ
The party was in full swing, and you had slipped into your role effortlessly. Your laughter echoed through the room as you sipped champagne, your friends and guests hanging on your every word.
Mindy, Sam, Wooyoung, and a few others surrounded you, chatting about the latest gossip in the city, and the music played softly in the background, setting a festive mood.
You looked around the grand ballroom, admiring the luxurious dรฉcor, the chandeliers that sparkled overhead, and the gentle hum of conversation filling the air.
It was everything you had grown accustomed toโthe perfect night of glamour, elegance, and being the center of attention.
But as the evening wore on, you couldnโt shake the nagging feeling in your chest. It was as though something was missing, and that something was Hongjoong.
You glance at your phone again, noting that the time is slipping away, and Hongjoong still hasn't arrived. The champagne, which had initially made you feel warm and confident, now seemed to weigh on you, making you restless.
โWhere is little Hongjoong, babydoll?โ Wooyoung asks you.
โDon't know, he should be here by now.โ
โMaybe he doesn't know how to get here.โ
โMaybe, let me call him.โ You excused yourself from the group and wandered toward a quieter corner.
Your heels click softly on the marble floor. You unlock your phone and send a quick text to Joong.
YNโก: Joong, are you coming? Itโs getting late.
You bite your lip, anxiously staring at the screen, waiting for a reply. But the familiar bubble showing that he is typing never appeared.
Frowning, you call him next, holding the phone to your ear as the ringing tone echoed in your eardrum. But when the call goes straight to voicemail, your anxiety deepens.
Where is he?
You make sure to include him in this world you live in, and now, you are starting to doubt if heโd actually show up.
There had been no signs of trouble earlier, but now the silence from Hongjoongโs end is unsettling.
You pace slowly, trying to calm your racing thoughts, but it's hard to ignore the tightness in your chest. You know you shouldnโt be worriedโhe might be caught up in traffic, or maybe something had come upโbut deep down, a quiet voice is telling you it isn't that simple.
You text him again, hoping for any kind of response.
YNโก: Kim Hongjoong. Where are you?
Nothing.
The seconds stretch into what feels like minutes, and your stomach twists. You donโt like this feeling.
You donโt like being uncertain.
You donโt like being let down.
You return to the party but find yourself unable to focus on the conversations around you. Your gaze flickers back to your phone as the minutes tick by. Your thoughts keep drifting back to Hongjoong.
What is keeping him? Is he really on his way? Or has something happened?
You take a long sip of your champagne, trying to shake the unease, but it lingers.
You just wanted him here, wanted to be with him.
You force yourself to rejoin the party, plastering on a faint smile as you move through the crowd. Mindy and Wooyoung are still chatting nearby, but their laughter feels muffled, distant.
The sparkle of the chandeliers seems dimmer now, the glamour of the evening dulled by the absence of the one person you were hoping to share it with.
โSweetie, there you are,โ Your motherโs voice pulls you from your spiraling thoughts. โMikeโs about to give his speech. Come, stand near the front.โ
You nod, following her to the center of the ballroom, where Mike is standing on a small stage. The guests quiet down as he takes the microphone, his charismatic smile commanding attention.
โLadies and gentlemen,โ He begins, his voice smooth and confident โFirst, thank you all for being here tonight. It means the world to me to celebrate this milestone with my family and our closest friends. As most of you know, Iโve recently been entrusted with a significant position in our family business, and I am honored to take on this responsibility.โ
The crowd applauds, a few cheers breaking out. Mike raises a hand, his grin widening.
โI want to take a moment to express my gratitude for the opportunity to step into this role and carry the legacy of the Clarke family forward. My parents have worked tirelessly to get me here, and I will do everything in my power to uphold the values of this company. Itโs an honor to follow in the footsteps of my father and grandfather.โ
A round of applause erupted, and you force a smile, applauding with the crowd, even though a sense of dread fills your chest.
You can already feel where this is going.
โBut before I move forward,โ He continues, his voice gaining an edge of sarcasm โI have to acknowledge someone whoโs always been there for me, even if she doesnโt always realize how much of a burden sheโs been.โ
His eyes flick to you, and for a moment, the entire room seems to pause.
Your heart skips a beat. You try to keep your composure, but there is an unsettling feeling settling deep in your stomach.
You force yourself to stand tall, but the quiet murmur of the crowd around you makes you feel exposed, like a target under a spotlight.
โAs my sister, YN has beenโฆ well, how should I say thisโฆ a distraction,โ Mike says, his voice dripping with mock affection โSheโs been more focused on parties andโฆ friendships than actual responsibility. And I think itโs time she learns that life isnโt all about being the center of attention.โ
You feel your cheeks burn, the words piercing through you like ice. You can feel the eyes of the guests on you, the weight of their silent judgment. You try to maintain your composure, but the sting of Mikeโs words make you feel small.
Like you donโt belong here.
Like you are nothing more than a plaything in the shadow of your perfect, golden brother.
Mikeโs gaze never wavers from yours as he delivers the final blow.
โMaybe one day, sheโll realize that success isnโt about what you can get from people, but about what you can give back. I can only hope that she grows up soon enough.โ
A few uncomfortable chuckles rip through the crowd, and your chest tightens. The blood rushes to your ears, and for a brief moment, you feel like you canโt breathe.
You look around, trying to find someoneโs gazeโanyone who might offer you some comfortโbut they all seem to look away, as if they have already accepted Mikeโs harsh truth.
Your father is smiling, nodding as if itโs all just a joke. Your mother is watching you with a mixture of concern and hurt.
But you feel entirely alone.
The crowd clap hesitantly, you manage to give a tight smile, though it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.
You stand still, trying not to let the tears welling in your eyes break free.
You have no idea where Hongjoong isโif he is even comingโbut right now, you need him more than ever.
You need someone who sees you for who you truly are, not the image that Mike and everyone else had constructed for you.
โExcuse me,โ You murmur to no one in particular, slipping away from the crowd.
โฎ โ
The party had begun to mellow out after Mikeโs speech, the guests turning their attention to the endless flow of wine and hors dโoeuvres. In one of the quieter corners of the room, Dann sat alone, her champagne glass untouched on the small table before her.
She fiddled with the hem of her dress, her eyes flickering toward the laughter and conversation swirling around her.
Mike, ever the picture of confidence, approached her with a sly grin, his glass of scotch in hand.
โWell, Dann,โ He says smoothly, sliding into the chair beside her. โHow much did you enjoy YNโs littleโฆ public humbling?โ
Dann hesitates, caught off guard by the directness of the question. But then, her lips curl into a faint smirk.
โI canโt say it wasnโt satisfying,โ She replies, her tone measured but laced with an undercurrent of bitterness.
He chuckles darkly โI thought youโd appreciate it. After all, youโve had a front-row seat to her antics, havenโt you?โ
She shrugs, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass โIโm around her every day, every hour. I see more than anyone else does.โ
Mikeโs brows lift, his curiosity piqued โReally? And where is our dear YN now? Have you seen her?โ
Dannโs eyes darted toward the balcony doors โProbably outside, drinking, smoking, who knows.โ
Mike leans forward, his voice dropping slightly โSmoking?โ
โYeah,โ Dann replies casually โShe does it often. You wouldnโt notice, but I do. She hides it well.โ
He studies her for a moment, as if trying to gauge the truth in her words. Then, with a smirk, he straightens up.
โInteresting. Well, I suppose I should go check on her, make sure she hasnโt set anything on fire in her dramatics.โ
Dann let out a small laugh, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. She watches as Mike rose and headed toward the garden doors, his steps purposeful and unhurried.
โฎ โ
The garden is quiet, the cool night air wrapping around you as you step outside. The soft glow of the party lights spills onto the garden, but you move further into the shadows, needing to be alone.
You clutch your champagne flute tightly, the glass cold against your palm. Your chest feels heavy, the weight of Mikeโs words pressing down on you.
Why does he always do this? Why canโt he just let you be?
You take a deep breath, the crisp air biting at your lungs, and tilt your head back to look at the stars. Theyโre beautiful, distant, and unattainableโjust like the life youโve always wanted.
Your hands shake slightly as you sip champagne, the liquid sloshing around in the crystal flute as you bring it to your lips. You donโt care if that is already your fifth glass.
You need something to numb the ache in your chest, something to drown out the sting of Mikeโs words.
You fumble for a cigarette, pulling one from the pack with a trembling hand. The sweet strawberry scent fills the air as you lit it, inhaling deeply as the smoke curls around you like a shield. It doesnโt help.
The words heโd saidโhow you arenโt good enough, how you would never live up to his expectationsโreplays in your mind over and over.
You try to focus on the cool air, the quiet of the garden, but the ache in your heart doesn't go away. You felt completely exposed out here, the vulnerability that had crept in from Mikeโs public humiliation gnawing at your insides.
You didnโt care that you were smoking in a garden meant for guests, you didnโt care about anything at all right now.
How long have you been out here? An hour? Two? You donโt even know anymore. Your head is fuzzy from the alcohol and the smoke, and all you want is for someone to make it stop.
But no one is coming.
Your phone buzzes in your purse, but you donโt bother looking at it. It can be anyoneโyour parents, Mindy, maybe even Seonghwa.
But the person you truly want to hear from is nowhere to be found.
The door to the garden creaks open behind you, the sound sharp and jarring. You flinch, not needing to turn around to know who it is.
The anger in the footsteps, the unmistakable tension in the airโit could only be Mike.
โYN.โ His voice cuts through the night like a blade.
You take another drag from the cigarette, your back stiffening.
โWhat do you want?โ
โI want you to stop acting like an embarrassment!โ His words are sharp, accusing โWhat the fuck are you doing out here, smoking and drinking like some commonโโ
You whip around to face him, your own anger rising like a tide.
โI donโt need you to lecture me, Mike.โ
โClearly, you need someone to remind you of your place,โ He shoots back, his tone venomous โYouโre out here, embarrassing the family, and you donโt even care.โ
Your lips curl into a bitter smile, your fingers still wrapped tightly around the cigarette.
โYouโve made it clear enough how you feel about me. Why donโt you just get lost and leave me the fuck alone?โ
Your voice is raw, but your words are sharp and final.
Mikeโs jaw clenches, his anger bubbling over. Before you can react, he steps forward, his hand lashing out and landing across your cheek with a sickening crack.
You gasp, your head snapping to the side from the force of the slap.
For a moment, everything goes still. The sting spreads across your face, your vision blurring, but it isnโt just the slapโitโs the realization that he didn't change during these years and his knack of hitting you when he's upset is still there.
That he can hurt you again, in front of everyone, and no one would stop him.
Your lip splits, the taste of blood mixing with the bitterness in your mouth. Your eyes fill with tears, but you blink them back, refusing to show weakness.
โYou'll always be the same, right?โ Your voice trembles with the weight of the words.
Mikeโs chest heaves with anger, but you don't care. You aren't afraid of him anymore. His cruelty has pushed you to the edge for too long, and now, something inside you snaps.
But as much as you want to say more, to lash out at him for everything he has ever done, your throat tightens. You swallow the lump in your throat, clenching your fists at your sides.
โGet back inside, YN,โ He sneers, turning on his heel โYouโre making this family look pathetic.โ
You stay silent, watching him walk away, the sound of his footsteps echoing in the empty garden. You sink back onto the bench, hands trembling.
You hadnโt expected him to hit you againโbut it doesnโt matter. Nothing about this night matters anymore.
What is left for you? Where is Hongjoong?
As you sit there, all you can feel is the weight of his slap and the suffocating silence of the garden.
โฎ โ
The mansion looms in the distance as you step out of the car, the cold air biting at your skin through your thin dress. The chauffeur doesnโt say a word, and you donโt acknowledge him.
You didnโt say goodbye to anyone at the partyโdidnโt even care if anyone noticed you slipping out.
You push open the front door, the familiar creak echoing in the grand, empty hall. The house is silent, save for the faint hum of the refrigerator from the kitchen and some maids doing errands.
Itโs late, but a light glows faintly from the far side of the room. Dannโs mother is there, cleaning up, as she often does late into the night.
She looks up as you enter, her expression softening into concern the moment she sees you.
โMiss YN?โ She says, her voice cautious yet kind โWhat happened to your lip?โ
You touch your fingers to your mouth, wincing slightly at the sting of the torn skin. The dried blood cracks under your touch, but you force a small, dismissive smile.
โItโs nothing,โ You say, your voice hoarse and detached.
She frowns, setting the dish towel down โIt doesnโt look like nothing. Are you sure youโre alright?โ
You nod, unwilling to engage any further โIโm fine. Goodnight.โ
Without waiting for a reply, you make your way upstairs, each step feeling heavier than the last. By the time you reach your room, the weight of the night is unbearable.
You close the door behind you, leaning against it for a moment before letting out a shaky breath.
The room is exactly as you left itโimmaculate, pristine, and entirely too cold. You slip out of your dress, trading the suffocating fabric for a pair of loose sweatpants and an oversized hoodie.
Crawling into bed, you stare at the ceiling, the events of the night playing over and over in your mind.
Mikeโs humiliating speech, the slap that still burns on your cheek, and the conspicuous absence of Hongjoong.
Hongjoong.
You held onto the hope that he would show up, that heโd swoop in and make everything feel bearable, but he didnโt. Not a call, not a message. Just silence.
Your chest tightens, and your throat feels raw as the urge to cry threatens to consume you.
But you donโt. You wonโt.
You clench your jaw, swallowing hard against the lump thatโs risen in your throat. Tears prick at the corners of your eyes, but you blink them away furiously, refusing to let them fall.
Crying feels like defeat, like letting Mike, Hongjoong, and everyone else see how much theyโve gotten to you.
You curl up on your side, staring blankly at the wall. The ache in your chest is suffocating, but you press your lips together, forcing yourself to stay composed.
Mikeโs words echo in your earsโhis sneer, his disdain. And the silence from Hongjoongโthe boy who is supposed to be on your side, who is supposed to see you, really see youโis deafening.
But you wonโt cry. You wonโt give them that power.
You take a shaky breath and close your eyes, trying to block it all out. The humiliation, the loneliness, the betrayalโtheyโre all too much, but you wonโt let them break you.
You are a Clarke. And YN Clarke doesnโt cry.
โฎ โ ห๏ฝก๐ฆน โ๏ฝกยฐโฉ
Hongjoong bursts into the venue, his heart pounding from the frantic drive. The event is still lively, guests milling about in elegant attire, but his eyes scan the room for one person onlyโyou.
He pulls out his phone, scrolling to your name, his thumb hovering over the call button. With a shaky breath, he presses it, raising the phone to his ear as he moves through the crowd.
โCome on, pretty. Pick up.โ He mutters under his breath.
The line doesnโt even ringโit goes straight to voicemail. His stomach sinks, and a fresh wave of panic washes over him. He tries texting instead:
Joongieโก: YN, Iโm so sorry. Iโm here now. Where are you? Please let me explain.
He hits send and watches the message sit undelivered, the grey checkmark mocking him.
โDamn it,โ He hisses, running a hand through his hair.
โHongjoong?โ
A familiar voice cuts through the din. He turns to see your mother standing a few feet away, her brows knitted together in mild surprise.
โMrs. Clarke,โ He says, relief flooding his tone as he quickly approaches her โHave you seen YN? Iโve been trying to find her.โ
Her expression softens, though thereโs a trace of sadness in her eyes. She sighs, folding her arms across her chest.
โI havenโt seen her in a while. She mightโve left already.โ
Hongjoongโs face falls โLeft? Why would she leave?โ
Mrs. Clarke hesitates, clearly choosing her words carefully.
โYou know how these events can beโฆ overwhelming. Sometimes, she just needs space.โ
His heart twists. He can sense thereโs more she isnโt saying, but he doesnโt press her. Instead, he nods, his mind racing with worry.
โDid sheโฆ say anything before she left? Did she seem okay?โ
Her lips press into a thin line, and she glances away briefly โShe didnโt say much. Butโฆโ She pauses, then shakes her head โI think itโs best if you talk to her yourself. Maybe she is at home.โ
Hongjoong nods again, swallowing the lump in his throat.
โThank you. Iโll find her.โ
The elegant woman gives him a small, almost apologetic smile before stepping away, leaving Hongjoong standing amidst the glitz and glamour of the party.
The lights feel too bright, the laughter too sharp. He dials your number again, and when it goes straight to voicemail, his frustration bubbles over.
โPretty, please, call me back,โ He says into the phone, his voice strained โI need to talk to you. Iโm sorry I wasnโt here earlier. Please, justโฆ let me know youโre okay.โ
He hangs up, his chest heaving. Every second that passes feels like an eternity. He starts pacing, determined, Hongjoong sets off toward the exit, hoping against hope that heโs not too late to make things right.
After a twenty minute drive, Hongjoong pulls up to your house, his heart pounding as he steps out of the car. The sprawling mansion looms in the moonlight, its grandeur only amplifying his anxiety.
He jogs up the stone steps and rings the doorbell, shifting nervously from foot to foot.
After a moment, the door creaks open, and a maid greets him. Her expression brightens slightly when she recognizes him.
โOh, Mr. Hongjoong, youโre a friend of Miss YN, arenโt you?โ
โYes,โ He says, his voice laced with urgency โIs she home?โ
The maid hesitates, then nods โI think she is in her room now, come in.โ
Hongjoong exhales, his chest tightening โThank you.โ
He makes his way through the elegant hallways, his footsteps echoing faintly on the polished floors.
When he reaches your door, he finds it closed. He pauses, then knocks softly.
โYN? Itโs me, Hongjoong,โ He says, his voice trembling slightly โIโฆ I need to talk to you. Please.โ
Thereโs no response.
He knocks again, this time with more urgency โYN, Iโm so sorry. I need you to know what happened. Please, just give me a chance to explain.โ
Inside, you sit on the edge of your bed, your knees pulled up to your chest. You can hear every word heโs saying, the emotion in his voice tugging at your heart.
But you donโt move, your resolve firm. You canโt face him right nowโnot like this.
Hongjoong presses his forehead against the door, his fists clenching at his sides.
โI was tricked,โ He says, his voice breaking โDannโฆ she gave me the wrong address. I thought I was going to the party, but it was all a lie. By the time I realized it was too late. Iโm so sorry, YN. I didnโt mean to let you down.โ
Still, you remain silent, staring at the door with a mix of anger, sadness, and exhaustion.
You want to believe himโyou really doโbut the weight of the evening keeps you rooted in place.
Hongjoong leans back, running a hand through his hair โI hate that I wasnโt there for you,โ He continues โI know tonight was important to you, and I messed it up. But please, prettyโฆ I care about you. Iโll do whatever it takes to make this right.โ
Your heart aches at his words, but you canโt bring yourself to respond. Maybe itโs the humiliation still fresh in your mind or the sting of feeling abandoned when you needed him most.
Either way, you decide to stay quiet.
After a long silence, he sighs heavily โI get it, you donโt want to talk to me right now. Thatโs okay. Iโll wait until youโre ready.โ
He lingers by the door for a moment longer, as if hoping for a miracle. When none comes, he finally steps away, his footsteps retreating down the hallway.
Inside, you exhale shakily, your hands gripping the edge of the bed. You feel torn, caught between your desire to open the door and the overwhelming need to protect yourself.
Maybe when you feel betterโwhen the pain isnโt so rawโyou can talk to him.
But for now, you stay where you are, letting the quiet of the room envelop you.
โฎ โ ห๏ฝก๐ฆน โ๏ฝกยฐโฉ
The next few days pass in a haze. You keep to your room, the curtains drawn and the world shut out. You donโt want to face anyoneโMike, your parents, your friends, and especially Hongjoong.
The humiliation from the party still lingers like a wound that refuses to heal, and you canโt bear the thought of their pity or judgment.
Your mother knocks on the door each morning, her voice soft and tentative, but you always feign a cough or complain of feeling unwell. It works, for now.
They let you stay hidden away, though you know itโs only a matter of time before they stop accepting your excuses.
By Wednesday, the isolation is starting to feel suffocating, but you still canโt bring yourself to leave.
The knock on your door comes earlier than usual, followed by your motherโs voice.
โSweetie, itโs me. Can I come in?โ
You hesitate, considering pretending to be asleep, but before you can answer, the door creaks open. She steps in, her expression a mixture of worry and sadness as she closes the door behind her.
She sits on the edge of your bed, smoothing the blanket with her manicured hands.
โYouโve been in here for days,โ She says gently โIโm worried about you, sweetheart.โ
โIโm fine,โ You murmur, your voice hoarse โI just need some rest.โ
She reaches out, brushing your hair โYou donโt have to pretend with me, YN. I know how hard that night must have been for you.โ
Her words catch you off guard, and for a moment, you feel your resolve waver.
But instead of breaking down, you pull the blanket tighter around yourself.
โI donโt want to talk about it.โ
She nods, her gaze softening โThatโs okay. But I need you to know thatโฆ Iโm here for you. No matter what.โ You donโt respond, your eyes fixed on the wall. After a moment, she sighs and leans forward, kissing your forehead โIโll let you rest. Justโฆ donโt shut yourself off completely, okay?โ
Later that evening, another knock sounds at your door. This time, itโs your father.
He doesnโt wait for permission before entering, holding a small black box in his hand.
โDarling,โ He says, his tone unusually bright โI thought you could use a little pick-me-up.โ
You glance at him warily as he places the box on the bed beside you.
โWhat is it?โ
โOpen it and see,โ He says, his smile strained.
You sit up slowly, pulling the box closer. Inside, nestled on a velvet cushion, is a sleek key fob. Your breath catches as you recognize the emblemโyour fatherโs favorite luxury brand.
โA car?โ You ask, looking up at him.
He nods, his smile faltering slightly โItโs parked in the driveway. I thoughtโฆ after everything, you deserve something special.โ
You stare at the key, a mix of emotions swirling inside you.
This isnโt the first time heโs done thisโtried to smooth over their failures with expensive gifts. When you were a child, it was toys, then clothes, then trips abroad.
Now, itโs cars.
โThanks,โ You say quietly, your fingers curling around the key.
Your father seems to relax at your response, as if the gesture has absolved him of guilt.
โTake your time, darling. Whenever youโre ready, we can go for a drive.โ
You nod, watching as he leaves the room. The door clicks shut behind him, and youโre alone again.
You stare at the key in your hand, the weight of it heavier than it should be. Itโs a beautiful gift, but it doesnโt fill the emptiness inside you.
It doesnโt erase the memory of Mikeโs words or the ache of feeling like youโre always second best.
You set the key down on your nightstand and lie back against the pillows, closing your eyes. Maybe tomorrow, youโll feel strong enough to face the world.
But for now, you stay cocooned in your room, the only place where you feel safe.
โฎ โ
The next morning, you wake up before your alarm, determination burning in your chest. Youโve spent days locked away, hidden from the world, but that ends today.
No one at school knows what really happened that night, and you intend to keep it that way. As far as theyโre concerned, you were just under the weather.
Also, after four days, you decide to turn on your phone, which immediately fills up with notifications of missed messages and calls. You decide to take a moment to review it.
10 missed calls from Mindy.
7 missed calls from Brat Woo.
2 missed calls from Hwa.
1 missed call from Mingi.
28 missed calls from Joongie.
486 unread messages.
You don't want to read so many messages, so you prefer to shut it down and start to get ready for the day.
You pull open your closet door and scan through the racks of designer clothes.
After a few moments, you settle on a pearl-white blouse that hugs your frame perfectly, paired with a plaid mini-skirt that shows off your legs, and your favorite jimmy chooโs high heels complete the look, adding the perfect touch of glamour.
Your makeup is flawless, of course. You conceal every imperfection, erasing any hint of the chaos youโve endured.
The faint scab on your lip vanishes beneath a carefully chosen red lipstick, and the flush of blush gives your cheeks a healthy, radiant glow.
The girl staring back at you in the mirror looks exactly as she should: untouchable, effortless, and every bit the queen bee.
Outside, your new car gleams under the morning sun, a symbol of your parentโs guilt and their way of fixing everything with a price tag.
You donโt care. Today, itโs a weapon, and you know exactly how to use it.
The engine purrs as you pull into the school parking lot, catching everyoneโs attention. Heads turn, conversations falter, and by the time you step out, all eyes are on you.
You move with purpose, your heels clicking against the pavement as you stride toward the entrance.
You can feel the weight of their stares, hear the murmurs of curiosity.
โIs that YNโs new car?โ
โDidnโt she call in sick for the past few days?โ
โShe looks gorgeous!โ
You smirk inwardly, keeping your expression neutral. Let them wonder. Let them speculate.
None of it matters.
Inside, your friends are waiting near your locker, their faces lighting up as they spot you.
โBabe! Youโre back!โ Mindy exclaims, her voice tinged with relief โWe were so worried about you!โ
โWhat happened? Are you feeling better?โ Another friend chimes in.
You shrug casually, opening your locker as if this is just another normal day.
โIโm fine. Just needed a few days to recover from the flu. Nothing serious.โ
Mindyโs eyes flicker to your car keys, which youโre holding deliberately in your hand.
โAnd the car? Is that new?โ
You flash her a small smile, dangling the keys for emphasis โA little gift from my parents. They thought I deserved a pick-me-up.โ
The group erupts into compliments, fawning over your car and your outfit. Itโs almost too easy to redirect their attention.
But as you glance around, your gaze lands on Hongjoong in the distance entering the library.
Maybe itโs time to talk with him about that night, he owes you an apology.
โI see you in class, girls.โ
Without waiting for a response, you make your way to the library.
The library is quiet, the faint rustle of pages and soft whispers creating a cocoon of calm. You scan the room until your eyes land on Hongjoong, sitting at a table with a few of his friends.
He looks up just as you approach, his face shifting between surprise and relief.
โYN,โ He starts, rising from his seat, โIโโ
โSave it for later, Hongjoong,โ You cut him off sharply, your tone leaving no room for argument โWe need to talk about what you said that night.โ
He hesitates, glancing awkwardly at his friends, but your unwavering stare makes him nod and follow you to a secluded corner of the library.
Once youโre alone, you cross your arms, your eyes narrowing.
โWhy didnโt you show up at the party? I waited for you for almost three hours, Joong.โ
โI know, I know, pretty,โ He says immediately, reaching out to steady your waist, his tone pleading โBut like I told you that night, Dann tricked meโโ
You cut him off again with a scoff, pulling back โDann? You promised me you wouldnโt talk to her again.โ
โAnd I didnโt start the conversation!โ He protests, frustration creeping into his voice โShe approached me that day at the mall.โ
โWhat?โ You blink, momentarily thrown off. The situation sounds ridiculous, almost laughable.
โThat day, I was shopping, and out of nowhere, Dann appeared, asking what I was doing there. When I mentioned the partyโโ He pauses, sighing heavily as his hand rakes through his hair, โShe told me the venue had changed and said sheโd send me the new address. I thought it was odd, but when she mentioned your mom inviting her, I believed it.โ
Your jaw tightens โAnd then?โ
โI drove to the address she gave me,โ He continues, his voice dropping with guilt โIt was in the middle of nowhere. No signal, no way to contact you or anyone else. By the time I realized what was going on, it was too late. I rushed back to the Ritz and then to your house as soon as I could, butโฆโ
Youโre silent for a moment, processing his words. None of it makes sense.
Dann, sweet, shy, unassuming Dann, pulling off a plan like this? The thought feels absurd.
Then again, you remind yourself, people arenโt always what they seem.
โAnd why did you trust her? Why didnโt you call me after she told you that?โ You press, your tone sharper now.
Hongjoongโs hands tighten briefly around your waist before he mutters.
โShe said maybe you were busy and forgot to tell me. I... I trusted her because she was my friend.โ His voice is barely above a whisper, the admission dripping with shame.
โOh my god, Joongie.โ You let out a bitter laugh, shaking your head โI thought you were smart. But I understand. She was your friend, and you didnโt think sheโd trick you like that.โ
He bites his lip, clearly embarrassed, but when you reach out to cup his cheeks, lifting his gaze to yours, he softens.
โNow you owe me an apology,โ You murmur, your lips brushing his lightly โYou left me all alone.โ
He smiles at your pout, a playful glint in his eyes โI know. What about dinner after school?โ
You shake your head, frowning โI want another kind of apology. You know what I mean, Kim Hongjoong.โ
And of course, he knows. But he canโt resist teasing you, just a little.
โWe canโt do anything indecent here, pretty,โ He murmurs, his hands slipping lower to rest on your hips as he pulls you closer โI donโt want to get us in trouble.โ
You roll your eyes but let the moment linger for a breath longer before stepping back, a plan already forming in your mind.
โFine,โ You say, straightening your posture and fixing him with a determined look โBut this isnโt over. And speaking of people owing me, Iโm going to have a little chat with Dann. She has some explaining to do.โ
Hongjoong stiffens, his playful demeanor vanishing โYNโmaybe you should let it go. You know how Dann is. Sheโll twist things, make it worse.โ
โNot this time.โ Your voice is steady, cold โShe went too far, and Iโm not letting her get away with it. If she wants to play games, Iโll show her how itโs done.โ
He watches as you stride out of the library, determination radiating from every step.
He knows better than to argue when youโre like this, but even he canโt help the twinge of unease at the thought of whatโs coming next.
โฎ โ
The final bell rings, and students rush to leave the school. The hallways are alive with chatter, but you remain by your locker, surrounded by her entourageโMindy, Wooyoung, Samantha, and a few others. Hongjoong lingers close by, his face a mixture of anticipation and tension.
As the crowd thins, you spot Dann walking down the hall, clutching her books, her head low as if trying to make herself invisible.
Your lips curl into a sharp smile, eyes glinting with cold determination.
โDann!โ You call out, voice slicing through the noise like a whip.
Dann freezes, her face draining of color. Slowly, she turns, her eyes wide as they meet yours.
It's been days since that day at the party and sheโs been so nervous about you finding out what she did.
You saunter toward her, your friends following closely, their presence an unspoken threat.
โYN, I have toโโ Dann begins, but you cut her off.
โDonโt even try, Dann. Iโm not in the mood for your pathetic excuses.โ You step closer, your gaze narrowing โI just have one question for you: What made you think you could lie to Hongjoong and me and get away with it?โ
Dann swallows hard, glancing at the others, who are watching her like predators sizing up their prey.
โWhatโโ
โOh, donโt give me that!โ You snap, throwing her hands up dramatically โYou know what you did that day.โ Dannโs panic builds, and her breath catches in her lungs for a moment โYou didnโt mean to send Joongie to some random, deserted place? You didnโt mean to ruin my night?โ
Dannโs grip tightens on her books โI wasnโt trying toโโ
โYou werenโt trying to what?โ You interrupt, voice dripping with mockery โYou werenโt trying to sabotage me? Youโre such a bad liar, Dann.โ
Mindy smirks, chiming in โI mean, seriously, Dann. Did you really think you could pull this off? Youโre soโฆ gullible.โ
โAnd desperate,โ Wooyoung adds with a chuckle, earning a snicker from the others.
You cross your arms, your expression one of feigned hurt.
โYou know, I even gave you that dress for the party. That expensive designer dress. Because I thought, โHey, maybe Dann deserves a chance to feel special for once.โโ You pause โGuess I was wrong.โ
Dannโs eyes well up with tears, but she shakes her head, trying to muster a defense.
โYN, I didnโt mean to ruin anything. I justโโ
โJust what?โ Your voice rises, drawing the attention of a small crowd of lingering students. โJust decided to be so dumb and submissive that youโd believe anything someone told you? Or are you working with someone?โ
The accusation hangs in the air, and Dannโs lips part as if to respond, but she quickly closes them, her silence speaking volumes.
To everyone's surprise; Hongjoong steps forward, his jaw tight.
โYou know what, Dann? I canโt believe I trusted you. You used to be my friend. I thought you were better than this.โ
Dann flinches at his words, her composure slipping further.
โJoong, Iโฆโ Dann looks down, her tears threatening to spill over.
You smirk, stepping closer until youโre towering over Dann.
โDid you want me to be mad at him?โ
Dannโs face flushes with humiliation, and she shakes her head vehemently.
โNo! Thatโs not what Iโโ
โSave it, youโre pathetic, Dann. And youโre not just a liarโyouโre a bad one. Honestly, I doubt you came up with this plan on your own. Someone mustโve put you up to it. Who was it?โ
โMaybe it was Seonghwa, I saw them talking at the party.โ Mindy snaps with a grin โRight, Dann?โ
Dann remains silent, her lips trembling as she clutches her books tighter. She won't say a word about it, and you frown at the mention of Seonghwaโs name.
Seonghwa talking with her, What the fuck?
โNo answer?โ You laugh bitterly โI see, youโre too scared to even admit it. Well, let me give you some advice: Stay out of my way. Youโre not in my league, Dann. You never were, and never will.โ
Wooyoung steps forward again with a grin โYou owe YN and Hongjoong an apology.โ
โA real one. Not that half-hearted excuse you tried earlier.โ Sam adds.
Dannโs tears finally spill over, and she whispers โIโm sorry. I didnโt mean to hurt anyone.โ
You roll her eyes, turning to your friends.
โLetโs go. Iโm done wasting my time on her.โ
As they walk away, you glance over your shoulder one last time, lips curling into a satisfied smirk.
โOh, and Dann? Donโt ever think about messing with me again. Next time, you wonโt get off so easily.โ
The crowd disperses, leaving Dann standing alone, her face streaked with tears. Behind her trembling exterior, a flicker of something elseโanger or determinationโtakes root.
โฎ โ
Dann steps are heavy, her hands trembling slightly as she clutches her bag. Tears still cling to her lashes, but her face is set in a grim determination.
The humiliation at school burns fresh in her mind, your cutting words replaying over and over like a cruel mantra.
By the time she reaches the front door of Clrarkeโs mansion, her shame has transformed into angerโa searing, all-consuming fury.
She pushes open the heavy doors without hesitation, her steps echoing through the grand foyer.
There is Mike, sitting comfortably reading something.
โMike.โ She says, her voice firm despite the lump in her throat.
Mike looks at her, his expression cool and calculating as always. He closes the book, his sharp eyes scanning her face.
โWell, well,โ He drawls, his lips curling into a smirk โYou look like hell. Let me guessโQueen YN had her fun at your expense?โ
Dann glares at him, dropping her bag onto the floor.
โShe humiliated me again. In front of everyone.โ
Mike chuckles, crossing his arms โThatโs her style. Did you expect a thank-you card for all your hard work?โ
โI expected her to be human for once,โ Dann snaps, her voice trembling with emotion โBut sheโs not. Sheโs a monster. And Iโm done being her punching bag.โ
Mikeโs smirk widens, a glint of approval in his eyes โFinally. I was starting to wonder if youโd ever grow a backbone.โ
Dann takes a deep breath, forcing herself to steady โYou were right. About everything. YN needs to be taken down. For good.โ
He raises an eyebrow, intrigued โAnd youโre ready to do what it takes?โ
โYes,โ Dann says without hesitation, her fists clenching at her sides โI want to destroy her. Her reputation, her relationships, her entire worldโI want it all gone.โ
Mike stands up, and walks directly in front of her โNow youโre speaking my language. But do you have a plan, or are you just here to vent?โ
Dann lifts her chin, meeting his gaze with newfound determination.
โI thought you might have some ideas. Youโre the one whoโs been watching her for years, waiting for her to slip up.โ
โI do have a few ideas. But if weโre going to do this, weโll need to be smart. YNโs not stupidโsheโll see a direct attack coming from a mile away.โ
Dann nods, her anger simmering just below the surface.
โSo what do we do?โ
Mike gestures for her to follow him, leading her to a luxurious sitting room where he pours himself a drink.
He takes a slow sip before speaking.
โWe chip away at her. Little by little. Sheโs built this image of perfection and control, but all it takes is one crack for the whole thing to shatter.โ He leans against the bar, his eyes gleaming with malice โWe start with Hongjoong. Make YN doubt his intentions.โ
Dann swallows, the weight of his words settling over her.
โHow do we do that?โ
Mike swirls his drink lazily, watching Dann with a satisfied smirk.
"Simple," He says "We make her think the one person she trusts most is betraying her."
Dann frowns, confused "Hongjoong? But heโs loyal to her."
He chuckles, shaking his head "Loyalty is fragile. YNโs world is built on power and controlโshe doesnโt trust anyone completely. If we plant the right seeds, sheโll start questioning even him."
Dann crosses her arms "How? He barely even talks to anyone outside of their little circle."
Mike leans forward, his voice lowering conspiratorially.
"Iโm pretty sure that after that nerd missed the party, he will apologize to her, right? Maybe this time he will fuck her as an apology.โ He smiles, his words full of venom.
Dann shifts uncomfortably at Mikeโs crude words, but she doesnโt argue. Heโs rightโHongjoong will go crawling back to you, desperate to make it up to you.
Heโs like a lost puppy when it comes to you, willing to do anything to stay by your side.
Mike watches her reaction carefully, then smirks โAnd when that happens, weโll act.โ
Dann furrows her brows โWhat do you mean?โ
He sets his glass down with a soft clink, straightening up.
โIโll tell you later, now go.โ
Dann hesitates, a flicker of uncertainty passing over her face, but she does what he ordered. She turned around and left the room.

โWell, Iโm finally here,โ you mutter as you look at the enormous castle that looms overhead.ย
You had been traveling to get here for some time and your body ached from the long journey. However, now that you were in the presence of the magnificent building, you felt like you couldnโt stop and rest just yet. You thought it was weird when a reclusive lord wrote to you, a professor at a prestigious university, and requested that you be his childrenโs governess. He mustโve thought you were qualified because you were a literature professor and had read a lot of books, which were important for teaching children. However, there were no references, and no one had heard of the family or this lord that was writing the letter. Yet, you decided to take the job for your own personal reasons.
You were leaving your life from the modern world and everything that was associated with it.
It wasnโt hard for you to leave everything behind. You didnโt have friends, and no one would come to look for you if you disappeared. When you were not teaching students, you spent your life in the company of books. They were the only thing that made you happy and the only things that had stayed constant throughout your life. That was the main reason you agreed to work for this strange lord, because you had heard that his castle was filled with the greatest works of literature.
As you approached the front doors, you noticed how the windows were dark, no light was coming through. Was everyone asleep? The castle seemed eerie in the night, and you had a nagging feeling that something wasnโt right. You tried to shake those feelings away, knowing that this was not the time to get spooked. You were exhausted and wanted nothing more than to sleep.
Upon arriving at the front door, you knocked and patiently awaited a response. Your heart raced, anticipation gnawing at you. After no one answered, you tried again, knocking louder this time. You wouldnโt have traveled this far without wanting an answer. On the verge of quitting and finding rest, the door, as if beckoning, slowly opened, urging you to enter. You paused, torn between entering and leaving, ultimately deciding that it was rude to depart without a word.
โHello, is anyone home?โ You shouted as you walked inside, hoping someone would answer.
No one came to greet you, but the sound of the wind echoed in the empty halls. There was no need to be scared. You were hardly scared of things that you didnโt understand, but this place had an air of mystery that made you uneasy. It felt like there was someone else in the house, watching your every move. The only lights came from the torches along the wall, but their light did little to ease the darkness.
โLord Jeong, are you here?โ You called out. You knew it was late, and he might be asleep, but you needed someone to answer you. โMy name is Y/N. I am the new governess that you hired.โ
Again, no one answered you, and you felt a chill run down your spine. You had hoped that someone wouldโve met you, but the lack of answers and the emptiness of the castle made you uneasy. You made your way down the hall to see if there was anyone awake. Maybe the servants were still awake, doing last-minute chores before going to bed. You hoped to find someone that could tell you where you could sleep.
You didnโt have a plan or anywhere else to go.
As you walked through the hallways, you noticed how the walls were lined with portraits. The people in the paintings all looked so beautiful, even if they were old and dust had covered their faces. However, it was odd that the portraits seemed to stretch out endlessly, even though the hallway was not very long. You thought about wiping the dust off to see the faces, but you decided not to since they were not yours.
Your eyes wandered down and saw the many artifacts that were also lined up on the walls. There were old swords, shields, and even some strange-looking guns. As a literature professor, you couldnโt help but be curious about what those weapons were used for. The stories of these things would make for interesting research.
You were so distracted by the many relics on the walls that you didnโt notice a figure moving swiftly towards you until it was too late. Something cold grabbed onto your arm and you turned to see a pale hand gripping you. You screamed and tried to break free, but the grip was so strong, it was almost as if it was draining the life from your body. You turned and saw the face of a beautiful man, who looked at you with wide eyes.
โYouโre not supposed to be here. The doors shouldโve been locked,โ he said, his voice raspy and low. He had a stern face, his sharp eyebrows furrowed as he stared at you. He wore a fancy suit and looked to be in his late twenties, but his age didnโt match his youthful features.
โI-Iโm sorry! Iโm the new governess, and the doors just opened by themselves!โ You cried.ย
The man let go of you and you stepped back, trying to get away from him. You could tell that he was the master of the house, and you didnโt want to anger him. You were not the kind of person to yell at others, especially your employer, but his sudden appearance and tight grip were enough to make anyone lose their composure.
โIโm sorry, Miss. Iโm Jeong Yunho, the lord of the castle,โ he apologized, his face softening. He seemed to be the kind of person who didnโt speak often, and you found his voice comforting. โIt is very late, and I was just startled. I didnโt expect anyone to come to the door at this hour. Please, forgive me for frightening you.โ
โItโs fine. I am just a little shaken up,โ you said, trying to calm down. You didnโt want to admit it, but his sudden appearance had frightened you. And that said a lot since you were scarcely afraid of anything.
โCome, letโs get you settled,โ he gestured to follow him. โI will take you to your room.โ
You followed him, still wondering what had just happened. The house was dark, no light was coming from the rooms. You wondered why the lord would keep the lights off at this hour. You also noticed how silent it was. There were no voices, no sounds at all. You didnโt think you had traveled far enough for this place to be abandoned, but it certainly felt that way.
Yunho stopped at a door and opened it. โThis will be your room while you are here.โ
The room was very elegant, decorated in various shades of blue. There was a large four-poster bed with a canopy, a dresser, a vanity, and a bookshelf. The shelves were full of books, just like the ones you had read. You were relieved to know that there would be something familiar for you to do.
โPlease get some sleep,โ Yunho nodded at you slowly. โTomorrow weโll tour the castle and introduce you to the staff and the children.โ
โThank you, Lord Jeong. Goodnight,โ you curtsied and he closed the door behind him, leaving you alone.
You were exhausted, so you quickly took off your shoes and laid down on the bed. The sheets were soft and smelled nice, like fresh laundry. It had been a long day, and you couldnโt wait to fall asleep. As you lay there, you thought about the castle, the servants, and the children. Tomorrow was going to be an exciting day.
As you drifted off to sleep, you couldโve sworn you heard the sound of whispering, as if the voices were coming from the walls themselves.
The next morning, you woke up early, eager to start the day. The first thing you did was get dressed and head downstairs to the dining hall. When you arrived, the servants were already bustling around, preparing the table and setting out the food. They were all wearing the same outfit: black uniforms with white aprons, their hair neatly combed back.
The table was set, and you sat down, waiting for the rest of the household to arrive. Soon, you were joined by Yunho, who greeted you politely. The man was dressed in a black suit, and his hair was perfectly styled. He looked so regal, but his face was emotionless, his mouth pulled into a straight line. He had dark circles under his eyes, making him look older than he was.
โGood morning, Miss Y/N. How are you feeling?โ He asked. His voice was deep and commanding, but there was no hint of malice in it.
โGood morning, Lord Jeong. Iโm well,โ you answered. โIs the rest of the household going to join us?โ
โThey are busy with their own duties,โ Yunho responded. โWe will tour the castle later today, but I would like to discuss the duties you will have while you are here. First, your primary task will be the education and care of the children. They have not had a governess for a few months and they are at the age where they should learn and be educated.โ
โOf course. As a professor of the literary arts, I will make sure to teach them everything they need to know,โ you responded. You were excited to have a chance to teach someone, especially young minds. โWill I also be in charge of their daily routines?โ
โYes, their daily routine and their discipline as well,โ he continued. โYou will have your own schedule and free time, so do not feel as if you are confined to this castle. You are welcome to go out and explore the town or the grounds. There are plenty of beautiful places for you to see. In the meantime, the staff will continue their duties and will help you with anything you need. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask.โ
โI will, thank you, Lord Jeong,โ you said, trying not to let the excitement show in your voice.
โJust call me Yunho,โ he said, his face softening a bit.
โYunho,โ you said, testing his name out. You liked the way it sounded.
โWell, now that thatโs out of the way, letโs begin the tour,โ he stood up and led you out of the dining room.
As the two of you walked through the halls, Yunho pointed out different rooms, explaining what they were used for. You saw a drawing room, a sitting room, a parlor, and even a billiard room. There were other rooms as well, but you couldnโt remember what they were. You tried to listen carefully to everything that Yunho was telling you, but your mind was elsewhere. The castle was so grand, and the interior was so intricate.
You had never seen anything like it.
You were shown the ballroom, a music room, and even an observatory. Everything was so grand and it all overwhelmed you. Yunho told you more about his family and the history of the castle.ย
You learned that the castle had been built a hundred years ago, when Yunhoโs ancestors had moved to this land. The estate had been passed down through generations and was the source of pride for the Jeongs. However, the family had lost many members, and the last one was Yunhoโs late wife.
โAnd this is the grand library,โ Yunho said, standing in front of the double doors. The doors were massive, carved with intricate designs. You couldnโt help but feel intimidated by them.
โI canโt wait to see whatโs inside,โ you said, stepping forward and grabbing the handle.
โNo!โ Yunho yelled, grabbing your hand and pulling it away from the door. โNo one is allowed in the grand library.โ
โWhy not?โ You asked, confused. You were curious about the books and wanted to explore the grand library.
โThose books are too dangerous. They are filled with stories and tales that could corrupt the mind and the soul,โ Yunho replied, his tone serious. โThey are the reason my late wife is dead.โ
You couldnโt believe what you were hearing. How could books be dangerous? You knew there were some books that could be scary, but those were fiction. These were books, not demons or monsters. You didnโt understand why they were kept locked away.
โPlease, Miss Y/N. Donโt ask me to open the doors. Iโve lost too much already,โ Yunho begged. His eyes were pleading with you.
You didnโt know what to do. You were a scholar of literature, and the idea of being banned from reading books was painful. It was in your nature to be curious, and you wanted to find out why the library was locked. But you didnโt want to upset Yunho or lose the job that you havenโt even started yet.
โThere is a smaller library for you to use with the children,โ Yunho assured you. โYou can read anything in there. Just please, donโt ask me to open these doors again.โ
You nodded your head in understanding, and Yunho seemed to relax. You wished you couldโve said something, but it was pointless to argue with him. The mystery of the grand library would remain unknown to you. Still, your mind raced with curiosity. You couldnโt shake the feeling that you needed to see the forbidden books. Perhaps it was because you were a scholar, but you needed to understand. You needed to learn the truth, no matter what the cost.
โThank you, Yunho. I will keep your advice in mind,โ you replied. Your heart raced with thoughts about the library and the possibility of learning the secrets that were hidden behind those doors. As long as you were here, there would be no escaping the desire to learn more. You knew that would get you into trouble someday. That was just a part of who you were.
After finishing the tour, Yunho led you to the children who were outside in the courtyard playing. As you neared the children, you noticed a man in casual clothes who appeared to be a groundskeeper or something of the sort. You noted his appearance, thinking he looked handsome. As you and Yunho entered the courtyard, the children came running to greet him, calling out โDaddy!โ. Despite his age, Yunho lifted all three children as they tried to hug him and spin them around in his arms. His gaze softened as he embraced each child. His stern demeanor was nowhere to be seen.ย
When he put them down, Yunho introduced you as the new governess. The children hid behind their father, whispering to him about how pretty you were. You giggled slightly, finding their reaction endearing, and it made you less nervous about taking the job. Yunho chastised the children, and they soon came out of their hiding, shyly offering you their introductions. Yunho introduced you first to his son, Yujin, who had turned five, then to his daughters, four-year-old Suyeon and three-year-old Sujin. You kneeled and greeted them politely. The children immediately attached themselves to you, clutching to you and introducing themselves. While this wasnโt a simple task for you as someone new, you could feel their excitement as they began to speak to you about their interests and their favorite toys.
Yunho sent them off to play once more after confirming when their lessons would start the following morning. The man you assumed to be a groundskeeper watched the interaction between you, the kids, and Yunho. As the children ran off and resumed their playing, the young man stepped forward, offering you a friendly smile. You watched curiously, noticing his youthful appearance. He couldnโt have been that much older than yourself.
โWelcome, miss,โ he said. โIโm Choi Jongho, the lordโs cousin and the groundskeeper here. Though I help out with other matters within the castle as well.โ
โNice to meet you, Jongho,โ you smiled, extending a hand out which the young man took firmly, shaking it. You couldnโt imagine that a man of his age could maintain a property as extensive as the Jeong castle. โI hope we will get to spend some time together since Iโm the new governess for the Jeong children. Are you their only groundskeeper?โ
Jongho released your hand with a small chuckle. โI suppose I am. Itโs not a simple job, but someone has to take care of things here, am I right? Besides, the estate means everything to Mr. Jeong, and I care deeply about it as well. He trusts me fully, and thatโs a blessing.โ
The young manโs tone was genuine and laced with kindness. Jongho carried himself with an ease that reassured you as well. Something about the young man felt safe.
โHeโs very nice and has already been treating me quite well,โ you mentioned as Yunho joined you two, the children having returned to their previous activities, oblivious to the world around them.
โThe staff here all admire and respect Lord Yunho, as he deserves,โ Jongho said. โThe children are fortunate to have a father so dedicated to them.โ
You glanced at the lord who held a similar expression to Jongho, the two staring back at the children, no doubt sharing the same thoughts. You would be lying if you didnโt admit the warmth spreading in your chest from the image. Yunho was gentle with the children, and it made you feel good about taking the job despite the secrets locked within the castle. You still didnโt quite understand what the books could contain, but chose to ignore the curiosity for the time being. Yunho already trusted you enough to open up, revealing some of his past, even if it did spark more questions than answers.
The three of you remained in the courtyard watching the children until they came running toward you again, nearly jumping into their fatherโs arms. Yunho spun them in circles before lifting Sujin and carrying her back towards the house.
โI better start getting Sujin cleaned for her supper,โ he said to the remaining party. โCome on, children.โ
Sujin was quick to wiggle in her fatherโs grasp, as she clearly wanted to walk. โPapa! Down!โ she giggled as Yunho lowered her and followed her and the children back inside the castle.
Jongho and you watched as the Jeongs walked off, chuckling slightly in the wake of the energetic kids and Yunho. When Yunhoโs silhouette had disappeared, you looked back at Jongho with a bright smile on your face, admiring how the sun hit his skin to accentuate his handsome features. The young man was incredibly attractive, and you hoped youโd get to spend more time with him while working at the castle.
โWell then,โ Jongho rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and shifted his stance, โI will go back to tending the grounds. If you need me for anything, you just have to ask. Itโs nice to meet you, Miss Y/N. I really hope we get to spend some time together in the future. Take care of yourself.โ
Before you had the chance to respond, Jongho placed his hat on his head and promptly headed for the gardens. There was a skip in his steps, something you couldnโt help but notice as you watched him make his way through the expansive yard. For a man that was around your age and appearance, you expected him to be a little less excited about his chores and duties, especially given the size and maintenance requirements. You almost expected him to have complained a little about being a servant, but he didnโt appear to have any issue with it. This intrigued you even more, giving you reason to pay him more attention in the coming days.
As the last rays of sunlight faded, the maids began setting tables for dinner. With Yunho preoccupied with the children and Jongho busy elsewhere, you decided to explore the grounds for some fresh air. The castle grounds were spacious, and it was important to take some time to explore the vast space. Besides, if you were going to be staying at the castle for some time, it was good to familiarize yourself with everything. You didnโt want to get lost in the castle, since you would no doubt become easily disoriented among the winding halls. The grounds also would be the best place to familiarize yourself. You should have started earlier since now the sun was fading and darkness was settling into place. You hoped to be back within an hour as dinnertime was approaching fast.
Despite the castle being eerily ominous and quite frightening when you saw it last night, it looked gorgeous bathed in sunlight during the day. You couldnโt resist letting your imagination roam about as you strolled around the premises. You imagined a heroine escaping through the open space while wearing a beautiful silk dress. You envisioned her making her way across a stone pathway and into an emerald garden filled with vivid plants and flowers. This reminded you that the castle did seem out of place for being located in a dense forest in the mountains, isolated by many miles. It was fascinating and beautiful in the daytime. Now that the sun had fallen below the horizon, and you couldnโt enjoy the sights, it gave the castle a darker feeling.
On your explorations around the castle, you heard noises that sounded like muffled conversations. However, when youโd check, nothing and nobody would be there. Peeking in the windows and circling around the grounds, you heard these strange noises coming from the castle itself. Maybe this wasnโt the best time to explore on your own.
You made your way towards one bench on the property to catch your breath. You were starting to wonder whether the noises you had heard before were perhaps nothing more than simple tricks of the mind or maybe a nearby village. You sat back on the wooden bench with a heavy sigh escaping your chest.
The sounds coming from the castle continued to grow louder. Soon, there would be nothing but utter silence surrounding it again. You thought about making your way back towards the entrance. Yet the mystery of the unknown voices calling out to you kept drawing you back in. You wanted to discover the truth about them. Was there someone or something lingering behind these walls? Was it just an old building creating these peculiar noises? Or had the wind simply picked up slightly to produce such abnormal vibrations? There was no way of telling what had been causing it and you were beginning to wish you hadnโt even considered searching. The only thing left was for you to leave without learning a thing and return safely inside the castle to enjoy the warm fires of the dining area. You stood up but were startled by the sight of a figure that appeared next to the gates and your eyes went wide with surprise.
โAh!โ you gasped in surprise, quickly jumping backwards to avoid falling to the ground.ย
You blinked several times, trying to clear away the blurriness from your eyes. Surely, there couldnโt be any person standing there, right? You looked over at the gates again, but there was no one there. You scanned the area for any movement or sign of a living being but could see nothing besides the trees, rocks, and bushes.
This was starting to freak you out. Sure, you knew that this was a possibility when you took the job, but you didnโt think that anything scary couldโve actually occurred at this location. And why were you getting such a creepy vibe from this part of the castleโs property? Something just seemed different about it somehow.
With a firm shake of your head, you straightened your posture and cleared your mind before heading back inside the castle to take your seat for supper. If you were to do any more exploring, it would be done on the next day with a proper guide. Perhaps asking Jongho to tour the entire grounds would not be a bad idea, since he would undoubtedly be more familiar with the details and stories surrounding the castle. For now, youโd eat dinner, bathe yourself and retire to sleep. This was already enough of a scary encounter, but you wouldnโt let it keep you awake at night, especially on the first evening you arrived.
It had been a few weeks since youโve become a governess for the children. The kids woke you up in a cheerful mood and eager for lessons. You found yourself sitting in the garden again as you read stories with the kids and watched their natural curiosity shining brightly. Yujin and Suyeon seemed excited but also overwhelmed by the amount of information in the books. For now, you preferred keeping the story to short tales, careful to stick to the knowledge level and time frame necessary to keep them interested. Thereโd be time later to teach them more complex ideas.
It felt good teaching the children and guiding them. They were quick learners and always happy. The weather was perfect and sunny. The roses and the wildflowers that lined the path leading towards the garden swayed softly in the gentle wind. The smell of nature surrounded you as it filled the air with its sweet fragrance. Birds chirped happily, flitting through the trees above the children. All three of them had their gazes pointed towards the book as if they were focused intensely. After you finished the first reading, the three began discussing amongst themselves about what story they would ask for next. You sat quietly with a grin stretched across your lips.
What adorable little devils.
Their enthusiasm inspired you further to be the best teacher you possibly could, determined to always bring out their best traits and encourage their development. Every bit of work counted towards reaching that goal. Once the dayโs lesson ended, they skipped back inside the castle and up towards their rooms. You turned around in the direction from which the footsteps had come and watched Yunhoโs face as he walked closer towards you; the sun glistening off the gold buttons and linings in his attire. His eyes focused solely upon you.
โHow was todayโs class?โ The question slipped from his lips smoothly.
โPerfect,โ you responded. โThese kids are so brilliant. I can tell their excitement was genuine.โ
โIs that so?โ Yunho asked. โDo you enjoy teaching them?โ
You nodded quickly. โI definitely do. Itโs definitely different teaching children compared to adult students, but I enjoy both. Itโs refreshing. When my lessons finish, I look forward to their little questions. It makes the entire process worth it.โ
Yunho hummed his response as the sound echoed around the two of you. A comfortable silence settled between the two of you and you noticed the corners of his mouth curve slightly upwards. A faint blush formed on his cheeks and you blushed at the realization that he was staring back at you, holding your gaze.
โWould you like to join me in my study?โ Yunho asked. โSince we are both professors, you in literature and I in art, perhaps I might entertain you with tales of art and literature from times long forgotten and stories you have yet to hear.โย ย
A tingle ran down your spine from the seductive tone in which he spoke. Never had you heard Yunho sound like this before, but it seemed as if he was offering an invitation you could not refuse. Not that you would have declined it, either. With an eager nod, you rose and allowed yourself to be escorted towards his study.
As you followed him into the massive room and the double-door was shut behind you, Yunho lit the fireplace, which immediately filled the space with heat. The flame reflected off his glasses, his eyes twinkling in the light. When your attention shifted to the roomโs furnishings, you found yourself gazing at the stunning fireplace and intricate gold filigree work. It was breathtaking. You turned back toward him, wanting to ask him about its design and purpose in his home.
His fingers danced gracefully across the leather-bound book that he had retrieved and placed before him on a polished oak table, running the tips of them over the smooth texture. It must have been quite old. Probably thereโd be hundreds of pieces of knowledge written inside of that volume which could answer questions, solve problems or even make predictions.
โThis book has been handed down through generations in the Jeong line and is very precious. Many members of the Jeongs have read it and learned its contents, adding to its importance.โ With a satisfied smile, he slowly lifted his gaze back up towards you, speaking. โWould you like to read some?โ
โI would love to,โ you whispered breathlessly, barely containing yourself.
Yunho laughed deeply at how eager you sounded. He slid the book towards you and watched as you held onto the book with the care that only a well-loved treasure receives. โWell then, Miss Y/N, I would like to share its contents with you. Itโs important to understand its origins and meanings in order to fully appreciate it.โ
You examined the worn pages, observing the parchment-colored paper. It was bound with thin leather strips on both sides, revealing intricate designs etched into each page and carefully outlined. This wasnโt just an ordinary journal. It was a journal passed down by the Jeongs from generation to generation and filled with their histories and traditions.
You flipped through the pages carefully, noticing that every single piece contained drawings or diagrams with accompanying text describing their purpose. The picture of a traveler leaving his hometown followed a section entitled โJourneyโ. He stopped in front of an enormous mountain and stared straight ahead into nothingness, while standing still for the longest time. Finally, after a momentary pause, he moved forward and disappeared over the horizon. Under the picture, two simple lines had been inscribed: โTo journey is to liveโ.
Then the traveler appeared again on another page; this time he appeared to be riding on the back of a horse. The caption read: โTraveling is to expand your horizonsโ and under it there were more words in small font size: โHe who sees the world differently is no stranger, but a friend.โ You chuckled slightly, finding a kindred spirit with those lines written in cursive. It reminded you of your own experiences in college and the fact that everyone saw the world through a different lens.
โWhat do you think?โ Yunho leaned forward a bit and smiled at you with interest, curiosity and an open heart.
โI love it,โ you confessed earnestly. Your gaze lowered back towards the open book and its contents while you gently stroked its edges with one hand. โThank you so much for allowing me the pleasure.โ
As soon as you said those words, Yunho laughed again in a sweet tone that warmed your soul and brought a smile to your lips.
โPerhaps youโll join me again sometime,โ his invitation rang clearly in the air as he motioned towards a stack of papers to his left. You couldnโt deny that the prospect made you feel quite excited, and you enthusiastically agreed. You needed no more encouragement, eagerly scanning the book once more before placing it gently upon his table.
โYunho... are there any more journals you could let me read through?โ you questioned carefully as his body relaxed against the leather seat, stretching out and closing his eyes with a contented sigh.
โPossibly,โ Yunho replied.
โPlease? I promise I wonโt go too far into your family secrets,โ you joked lightly, causing him to grin widely while shaking his head in amusement.
โWe all have our own histories and secrets. Though, you may be free to go through all journals that I possess if it will please you,โ he teased playfully as his brown eyes glittered. The smile adorning his handsome face showed affection and perhaps even a hint of a hope that maybe one day youโd want to learn about all of his own hidden desires and passions. But for now, you contented yourself with merely exploring the knowledge held within these priceless volumes.
Before you realized it, an hour had flown by. The sounds outside grew quieter as dusk fell, yet neither you nor Yunho dared to stir. Both lost in thoughts about the history of the Jeongs and their stories, it took you by surprise when the door swung wide open, revealing Jongho in a state of clear discomfort. The corners of his usually bright eyes crinkled up nervously, but, he managed to speak without faltering.
โI... I need to talk to the Lord for a moment,โ his voice was hoarse and his speech slower than usual. You could almost feel his anxiety and worry radiating through the room.
โI understand,โ you politely excused yourself while leaving the book where it laid before standing up to exit his office. โThank you again, Yunho. For showing me some of the journals.โ
โCertainly,โ Yunho replied. He appeared relieved, seemingly happy about being able to assist you. โI hope it will provide enjoyment during the upcoming days.โ
With one last appreciative glance, you exited and closed the door.
โYou showed her the journals?โ Jongho asked once he was certain that youโd be out of earshot, staring at his boss intently. He raised an eyebrow questioningly. โYunho, are you sure-โ
โI couldnโt help it,โ Yunho muttered. His face darkened briefly, a hint of sadness slipping through the cracks of his typically cheery mask. โI had to. She looks too much like...โ
His statement trailed off abruptly, but the implication was crystal clear to everyone within hearing distance. They knew what had been running through his mind. The young woman resembled so much of his dead lover. She was a spitting image, reminding him of those few precious days in which he was young and naรฏve, inexperienced in life and its cruelty, and thought love could overcome anything.
โIโm surprised that Miss Y/N looks like her,โ Jongho whispered softly. โHow is it possible?โ
โIโm sure that her soul is back now to stay,โ Yunho breathed deeply and stared straight ahead, his hands fidgeting. โNo longer would we have to hear her restless soul wander and whisper among us, crying out our names.โ
โYou canโt possibly think of bringing her back. Itโs too dangerous, not to mention it will be her end,โ Jongho argued. โWhat if things go wrong and she never becomes alive? Are you going to sit idly by and wait forever? For something that could take place never? And if the spell is successful, do you expect Miss Y/N to walk alongside you without questions? Youโre thinking of trading another soul to bring back your wife. Would she not end up suffering the same fate, if not worse?โ
Yunho looked up at Jongho coldly. โDo you not understand how much it means to me to have her alive again? Even if only for a short period. She deserved it. We could have been so happy if not for everything else.โ
โSo youโre willing to hurt someone else in exchange for the woman you loved, hoping that maybe things will go back to the way things used to be,โ Jongho continued his plea, โthe late lady is gone. Miss Y/N deserves the opportunity of a complete life, free of any attachments from the past and all the horrible memories attached to them. You canโt expect to use those forbidden books to bring her back to life.โย
โI cannot continue on without her,โ Yunho hissed. His brows knit together furiously as he fought against the rising anger within him. โOur children need their mother, my family and our legacy needs their daughter-in-law, and most importantly, I need my true love to return to me.โ
โThink for a second, Yunho. Do you seriously believe the spirits of your childrenโs mother would be okay with sacrificing an innocent person to resurrect their dead mother?โ
โYou know what her ghost wants, Jongho,โ Yunho groaned, dropping his hands to his sides in defeat.
โMiss Y/N isnโt Lady Ara,โ Jongho reminded him. โLady Ara and Miss Y/N have completely different backgrounds, interests and personalities. Even if they share physical appearances, that is all.โ
โI am aware. Believe me,โ Yunho looked away with frustration evident in his voice. โI know that my wife is gone and that Miss Y/N is alive and well...โ
โYunho, why donโt you just fall for Miss Y/N instead and start over instead of hurting an innocent and beautiful person? Lady Araโs soul may be gone, but that does not mean that you cannot find happiness without her again,โ Jongho added quietly. โThe children seem to love her, the staff love her. And Iโโ
He trailed off and shook his head slowly. Silence stretched between them as they considered everything before them.
โYunho,โ Jongho muttered eventually. โThink this through again before making any decisions. Even the dead are allowed a proper resting place. Is resurrecting their late mother really the best thing to do, especially if they cannot see or feel their mother, anyway? At least Miss Y/N is a breathing person thatโs right in front of you.โ
โI-I know,โ Yunhoโs gaze dropped to the ground. He tried to collect his scattered thoughts. A part of him already believed Jonghoโs words. A bigger part, however, wanted his wife and only his wife. He could still vividly imagine his late wifeโs soft smile and laughter, her warmth against his chest and kisses that reminded him of sunrises. Nothing compared to the love and affection she showed him and their little family. Everything in him ached with longing for her touch, her kiss, and her embrace again. If his spells worked successfully, sheโd come back to him whole again and to spend the remaining years of his life together with him in bliss.
Yet another quiet voice in his head warned him against those foolish notions and dreams. How could it possibly be wrong when a pure soul was sacrificed to bring back the woman that was the cause for his and his childrenโs sorrows? Then again, was he truly sure he would gain exactly the results he desired and hoped for? Was bringing his dead wife back really the answer? Could it really fix their broken household? Or would he be nothing but a monster, bringing pain to others again?
โDoes her ghost still haunt you?โ Jongho probed as his friend remained deep in thought, hands interlocked before him.
โYes, of course. All day long, I hear her pleas and whimpers,โ the expression on Yunhoโs face fell entirely at Jonghoโs response. He sounded terribly drained. โEven after these three years? Iโm glad that the staff canโt see her but the children... Iโm sure theyโre so scared.โ
โOh, she wonโt go after the children, would she?โ Jongho questioned worriedly. โSurely not.โ
โYes. You know, the only way that we can appease her and put her soul to rest,โ Yunho mumbled. His eyes filled with regret as he sighed. โShe... She wonโt leave us alone unless we get her back.โ
โGive yourself more time and think about things properly again. If nothing works, then so be it. If anything, let Lady Araโs soul have peace and find its way towards eternal rest,โ Jongho reminded him as kindly as he could. โIโll look through the forbidden books again and write up a report for you.โ
Yunho blinked at him blankly for a second. Slowly, understanding began dawning on him. Perhaps he really was overreacting slightly. Maybe his desire had caused him to temporarily lose his sanity. The idea of having her back, the ideal outcome for him, overwhelmed his entire being. Perhaps Jonghoโs suggestion would lead him in the right direction. He needed to make a decision soon. For his own sake and his familyโs sake.
โOkay,โ he finally managed to say. โOkay.โ
Jongho gave him another quick glance, almost hesitant before eventually saying his farewell. He wanted to lighten up the mood again, at the same time aware that it was pointless and the lord would most likely shut himself off until tomorrow morning. If thereโs anything, he would help. Until then, heโd give the man some space.
As the heavy wooden door swung shut, Yunho slouched into the chair. A loud sigh escaped him. His mind still raced about a way of resurrecting her but also contemplated on the fact that maybe, just maybe, Jongho might have had a point. A faint glimmer of hope sparked within him. Maybe the feelings werenโt totally gone or completely destroyed after all.
He could start over. The opportunity of getting to know and falling for Miss Y/N did cross his mind more than once and her kind and soft personality was a contrast to that of Ara, though he couldnโt deny the way she could brighten the childrenโs days, as well as the staffโs and even his in such a short time was already refreshing. A bitter chuckle sounded, immediately drowned by the crackling sounds of the dying fire in front of him.
Jongho sighed, unable to hide his concerns. Not wanting the staff to sense something was off, he put on a straight face, ready to head out on another duty. Before leaving, he made sure to leave a small vase of fresh white roses, picked from his own garden and lovingly trimmed in an attempt to brighten Yunhoโs room.
Only Jongho had seen through the dark magic heโs dabbled and accidentally cursed himself with, much to their horror, because the once sweet and optimistic lord, blinded by his obsession and desperate feelings towards his deceased wife had used forbidden knowledge no human should dare meddle in, only for it to bring tragedy and heartache upon himself. Yunho never expected the resurrection spell he chanted with so much optimism would end up turning the mansion upside down, that all of them, especially him, would end up experiencing agony so great and unending, until all that remained were only broken memories of his late wife.
The household went into mourning for many months after the spell. Everyone who met Yunhoโs former wife adored her, and it had been so difficult seeing Yunho and his children suffer alone with her death. The staff tried to console them and reassure them that even the deepest wounds heal, but the way he fell into darkness left everyone speechless, even Jongho.
The previous three tutors resigned or retired prematurely because of stress and other concerns. None of them could ever reach out to their children enough to make a connection, and even when they did, they still had not figured out the dynamics well enough to work effectively with them. But ever since Miss Y/N had become the new governess of his beloved cousinโs children, his hope in them blossomed, watching their eyes slowly grow brighter with happiness and affection as the days went by.
To Jongho, Miss Y/N felt right for the job, from her enthusiasm when interacting with the young heirs of the Jeong family, to her eagerness to learn about everything regarding the Castle and surrounding area, especially the histories surrounding its location. He watched from the corners of the grounds and various windows to check up on the new governess during her daily routines, the way she seemed to enjoy teaching the children every bit of her knowledge while still allowing time to allow their innocence to flourish and their free spirits to grow and develop, how Miss Y/N willingly included them into discussions or other activities even if it seemed uninteresting to them, yet never forced the kids to do things they didnโt like, always encouraging. He cherished every smile on her sweet and gentle face.
Someday... perhaps... Jonghoโs eyes lowered. Deep in his chest, something had changed. He couldnโt quite pinpoint what that was. Did his heart start beating differently? Did his breathing become shallower? Jongho shook his head, shaking the strange feelings away, even as the sense that something had already shifted, and would shift more. He pushed back his self-doubt and closed his eyes. There was no way that he could harbor feelings like these when his station would never allow him to have someone. Especially a woman of her standing.
Jongho brought a hand to his face, running it over his tired features.
โDamnit,โ he cursed under his breath. He thought his life was perfectly normal and steady. Until recently, there wasnโt anyone who seemed to capture his attention. He felt conflicted, but resolved that the feelings would surely vanish if he didnโt let himself think about them.
Jongho huffed and shook the feelings away. He knew there was no hope whatsoever, especially not at the moment when the lordโs future and reputation is in danger, where all hopes for him to recover are placed on the very governess heโs admired ever since she first arrived here, because she reminded him of the missing piece of Yunhoโs broken puzzle: his dead wife.
โDear god,โ Jongho massaged his temples slowly with a deep sigh, unable to shake the image of her smile from his mind. He wondered whether heโd ever stop thinking about her. Itโs not even been a week, and sheโs already crept up inside his head. The possibilities worried him and sent shivers through his entire body. Why do these feelings exist inside him? Where did they come from and why now of all times when he has to put his life on the line for his boss?
A thousand and one worries ran rampant within him, but nothing prepared him for the day that she suddenly became the focus of his life. Was it because she had turned everything in their lives into something entirely new? She brought light and warmth everywhere she went. She gave new meaning and purpose to his dull existence. He wanted to protect her. Jongho clutched his fists tight at the thought of anyone or anything putting her in harmโs way or seeing her cry. How did this happen? Why couldnโt he control whatโs going on inside his head or heart? All of his training, all of his efforts to be rational, completely overthrown by Miss Y/N.
For the longest time, Jongho stared ahead into the darkness. In his heart, a seed had been planted, waiting for its chance to burst open. A dream, a possibility for something bigger than the two of them. What if... What if she felt the same?
He wanted her. That much he was certain of, and although he had never thought it possible that his life would turn into what itโs turned into, it did. No doubt. But the biggest issue with everything: what does Miss Y/N want? Would she like a future by his side? A life with a mere servant, when she could easily marry into the aristocracy instead and obtain riches?
Jongho paused and slumped deeper into the pillows. None of these were questions he had an answer for, nor could he form any sort of speculation for at least in the foreseeable future, unless she showed him something else. The only thing heโs sure of right now is that, for as long as it takes, for as long as the chances of her loving him remained uncertain, Jongho would hold on and treasure every smile, every laugh and every giggle that makes him wish to have his own smiles and laughs with her.
And for the first time in a while, he realized what had brought such joy into his previously monotonous life and now, what he will never, ever, give up no matter what.
Even if it meant going against Yunho.
โMiss Y/N!โ a sweet, cheery voice chimed happily as you settled into a chair.
The children had become comfortable enough to act so comfortably in your presence, not hesitating to pull themselves up by you for their morning meal. Every time you saw them in their cute outfits, smiles bright and glowing, and chatting happily away, a warm sense of fulfillment spread through your entire body. What were the odds that a few weeks ago you would have thought nothing like this would be possible, and yet, everything in front of you showed otherwise?
โWhat are we learning today, Miss Y/N?โ Yujin asked, mouth half-full with some cut up pieces of apples.
โSlowly, dears,โ you instructed patiently, gently tapping a napkin to his lip. โWe are learning more about literature and art appreciation.โ
โIs it the boring kind like those dumb books in Daddyโs study?โ Suyeon wrinkled her nose distastefully.
You giggled as a certain fondness washed over you. The precious little girlโs blunt opinions and personality never failed to amuse and delight you. Even if they might not like a particular activity, both she and Yujin would sit dutifully next to you and pay attention.
โThese are different kinds of books, I promise,โ you winked, earning delighted gasps from the two children.
Sujin, being only three, clapped along with the excitement, watching her older siblings. Despite her babbling, there were some basic words of gratitude and greeting she recognized and had begun uttering for each member of the staff, which warmed everyoneโs hearts. As you taught the two older children, Sujin would happily be in your lap or clinging to your skirt. She definitely liked following and was quieter, preferring to listen to you speak more than try to recite herself.
โAlright. Letโs go,โ you picked Sujin up.
With the children in tow, you entered the room, where several books lined the shelves neatly in organized rows. The previous tutors were highly experienced individuals; well read, knowledgeable and proper. Although Yunho gave his children the luxury of many learning opportunities and experiences, there was something to be desired in that they would not relate well to the childrenโs age. Childrenโs education needed to be adjusted according to their growth, development, interests and abilities in order for them to retain their lessons and information better.
Although you taught adults during your time as a professor in a college, being able to teach little children was an entirely new world of its own. But seeing their adorable little faces lighting up with their eyes gleaming whenever you started telling them a story, seeing Sujin clapping her chubby hands or watching them lean forward as they listened intently, hearing them ask questions, and interacting with them. Everything about their childhood was a rare treat. You could tell the children enjoyed themselves tremendously. Their innocent smiles and their wide, sparkling gazes filled with curiosity and wonder were more than enough payment to last a lifetime.
โSo,โ you began, getting up from the table to approach the wooden cabinet against the wall. As usual, you scanned over its contents briefly, deciding on what to pull out, before turning your focus back to the children, who patiently waited. โI know Suyeon doesnโt like the books in their fatherโs study, but perhaps she may prefer some paintings.โ
โLike pretty ladies sitting on swings or walking near water fountains?โ Yujin asked. His sweet question made you chuckle as his interest was also shown.
โThere are also plenty of pictures like that too, although most of them will probably show landscapes,โ you mused, bringing up a large, bound folio. โHow about we try this one together?โ
Your suggestion was met with their excited agreement. Once the book was laid flat on the wooden tabletop, you flipped past the first few pages. You didnโt have to say much about the cover or title, as it didnโt take long for the kids to recognize what the subjects of these works were. Suyeon stared curiously, barely able to read the words scrolled upon its cover.
โAre you ready to learn more about the artists behind some of these lovely images?โ Your question resulted in an enthusiastic cheer.
While the kids sat with their legs dangling as they carefully examined the pictures before them, you opened another folder containing a brief passage of information that served as an introductory background on the person who painted each work. It would have taken many times the amount of energy to fully explain or discuss each painting itself, much less explain the various aspects of brush strokes, textures, color schemes and so on. Instead, a simplified overview of each artistโs lives would have to be enough until the children can sit and learn without feeling bored.
โWhat are we learning today?โ Yunho asked with a raised eyebrow and a soft grin as he leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed.
โArt. Artists,โ Suyeon waved her hands around excitedly. โItโs so cool, daddy!โ
โDaddy. Look!โ Yujin held up an oil pastel drawing with two rabbits. The sight of him pointing proudly to his art and holding it out made you crack a fond smile.
โI figured today we delve into the arts since youโre an art professor yourself, my lord,โ you remarked gently, watching the kids jump about and start on their respective drawings, though Sujin needed more of your assistance. โWe could branch out into more literary sections starting later, and of course, Iโll include plenty of reading time.โ
โWhat great ideas. I think the children love it,โ he offered up a quiet hum.
โThey do have talent,โ you added happily. The young master and lady were exceptional at drawing and painting, though not without their moments of struggle in between, to be expected from children of their ages.
โNow, now, my young lord and ladies,โ you said calmly, stepping over with the stack of paper and paints, โwe donโt want to paint our beautiful clothes, do we?โ
Picking up Sujin, her chubby hands filled with green and orange smudges, you rubbed them lightly over a tissue before depositing her on your hip, making the younger Jeong squeal with delight, smacking her tiny palms against your cheek and staining it. Laughing at her behavior, you handed her to the nanny as she came to pick her up. Yujin and Suyeon joined them for a moment.
โPlease make sure the children get cleaned up and dressed as well, Miss Kim,โ Yunho told the nanny as you organized the scattered materials into their neat piles. The children were adamant at spending every spare second with you and constantly begging you to stay a little longer, regardless of the fact that it was nap time and you needed a break too. โMiss Y/N must also rest.โ
You thanked the nanny quietly and bade farewell to the kids with the promise that you will continue your studies together with them after naptime. Just as you were about to head upstairs for a quick catnap, Yunho gently took hold of your shoulder, making you glance at him in surprise.
โYou have paint on your face,โ he murmured, pulling a clean, soft handkerchief out of his pocket. Before you could respond, the cloth ran softly over the corners of your lips and across one side of your cheek. Your entire face tingled and burned. A sudden warmth enveloped your entire body despite how soft the delicate cloth felt against your skin.
His gaze and expression were softer than usual. Kind eyes that radiated heat, along with an enigmatic smile you couldnโt decipher. Unconsciously, your teeth dug into the inside of your lip and an inaudible sigh slipped through your parted lips. Yunho stopped a moment and surveyed you closely, still smiling with that indescribable grin as his gaze dipped lower briefly.
โDo not think too much,โ he added with a low chuckle. You became uncomfortably aware of his fingers gliding smoothly across your skin as he wiped off the extra paint left behind by the childrenโs sticky fingers, then you watched him refold the handkerchief neatly before stuffing it into his pocket.
It took you another moment to remember to breathe. His proximity still affected you greatly. Thankfully, he stepped back and headed away, leaving you alone to deal with the growing feeling in your heart and mind. How is it even possible, you wondered as your gaze remained fixated upon the dark head of hair until the figure disappeared down the hallway and turned to the corner, when his mere smile and touches were enough to make you lose composure and act shy in front of him? And the thoughts of him touching you, looking at you, thinking about you...just you, in the privacy of his chambers.ย
You buried your hot face in your hands.
Being around the man, his charming aura and enigmatic smiles, made you question and yearn for the chance to be held in his arms and in his affections. You sighed deeply, knowing fully well that, although nothing could ever happen, at least the feelings could only fizzle out with time. Surely, this entire episode will pass soon and everything can return to normal again.
To distract yourself, you decided to get some hot tea and snacks from the kitchen. You found Jongho in the kitchens already, nibbling a snack of his own. When he noticed you, he shifted so his seat would give you enough space to sit and dine on the delicious and soothing sweets.
โWhat kinds of books do you usually read, Miss Y/N?โ Jongho suddenly asked, catching you completely off-guard.
โOh, me?โ you hesitated a little, lowering the cup to the table with a quiet, timid chuckle.
โYes. I was curious and wanted to see whether your likes and preferences are similar.โ he gave a hopeful, toothy grin. โAre there any other books or topics you are interested in?โ
โOf course. I absolutely love history, literature and language, and art, of course,โ you explained, ignoring the thudding of your racing heart, cheeks growing pinker. โOh, and cooking, sewing, gardening and painting, too. Anything that will allow me to unwind after work, really.โ
โWhat about romance?โ Jongho continued, making you grow hot.
โR-romance?โ Your brows furrowed, nearly choking on the dessert.
โItโs one of the most popular genres in our townโs library,โ he nodded his head enthusiastically. โBut you seem to like reading history.โ
Oh, thatโs what he meant.
โWell, I enjoy all forms of literature. So, thereโs that,โ you giggled nervously. You didnโt have time to explain your obsession and love with the subject. โTo answer your question, yes, I do enjoy the occasional romance novels too, although it depends. They should contain elements that spark the interest of the readers.โ
โAnd what interests you?โ Jonghoโs smile widened even more as he asked the simple question, turning to you again and making your heart do a backflip.
For a moment, your head was a total mess. Of course, you enjoyed reading historical novels and occasionally light romantic ones, but most of it, you used to read them as an outlet for the dayโs stress or when your heart ached from loneliness. As you grew into a fully grown adult and understood your bodyโs needs, a different craving for literature developed. The contents became dirtier and explicit.
That didnโt mean, however, that you were shameless enough to mention these types of works to anyone. Your eyes looked around briefly, scanning the area, making sure no one could catch sight of how flustered youโd become. Jongho was handsome, that much you could acknowledge as a fact. And in the time that youโve known him and had been working in the mansion, a faint seedling of some sort of respect, admiration, and desire for something bloomed. The fact that you could imagine him holding you so intimately that you had started looking at his built figure, thinking of his lips over yours, his fingers trailing softly over every inch of your body.
Jongho followed your gaze to find it landed on the servants. To others, they were chatting and conversing with each other and working about the area while preparing to serve tea for afternoon refreshments. It was simply them going about doing their duties. โMiss?โ
โHm?โ you uttered. โYes?โ
Jongho shifted towards you, leaning forward and casually adjusting his legs while sliding his hands closer to where yours rested on the table. His height caused his shoulder to hunch forward slightly, so his breath wafted across your cheeks, warm and soft. His handsome features, his neatly slicked hair, his gentle expressions, you could stare at his gorgeous features for hours and not grow bored with taking everything in. โAre you okay? You seem to be quite flustered.โ
โOh? Flustered?โ A high-pitched noise escaped your lips, sounding more like a broken screech. โMe? I was just thinking thatโโ
You quickly cupped the cup with a nervous smile and drank more of the refreshing lemon drink. Your throat was tight. Was it getting warm? The way you shifted in the seat revealed the discomfort in between your thighs that continued to grow worse. Jongho had somehow affected your hormones without realizing.
โI-itโs nothing. Nope! Just me and my silly thoughts.โ you swallowed thickly, fanning your heated face with your free hand.
You couldnโt understand why you started feeling this way for both Yunho and Jongho. These feelings werenโt like the kind that youโd had experienced before with anyone else. Youโve had your fair share of men, though folks would call you promiscuous because they didnโt believe any good woman would associate themselves with those kinds of folks. But with Yunho and Jongho, there was this unfamiliar sensation in how you reacted whenever you saw them. And if you were being completely honest with yourself, you liked this. A lot. You loved feeling the butterflies in your stomach.ย
This sweet, new thing.
โYour face is pink,โ Jongho noted casually. There was no hint of teasing. It was spoken with genuine, quiet worry that caused an oncoming headache, coupled with the dryness in your throat. โPerhaps you should lay down.โ
Your lips tightened and pursed. โI will, I think.โ
You dabbed at the corner of your mouth and then left the servant to clean up in order to exit to your bedroom to lie down. However, instead of a long and dreamless nap, your mind became filled with dreams and fantasies of what could be. Of Jongho and your fingers entwined, him leaning closer to steal a kiss, his lips so tender upon your own and his body flushed to yours, skin tingling with need. Of Yunhoโs powerful arms around you, shielding you, and his breath hot and husky as he murmurs his affections, kissing you deeply with a passionate neediness. The images made you sigh heavily into the bedsheets, letting out all the tension that you had no other place for.
And deep down, you felt almost certain that there might be a place for both men within your heart.
The thoughts surrounding Yunhoโs mind as he slept that night were those of Miss Y/N, whom he was growing more accustomed to seeing and thinking of each passing day. Every time, when she walked past him and greeted him or when she lingered near, he would breathe her in, notice every little detail like the crinkle near her mouth when she laughed and the light in her beautiful eyes. And just when he thought that she would be ingrained in his mind, her figure would change to that of his late wife, the curves, the colors and her voice would change into her tone.
Her face appeared a lot clearer than it has been for years. Almost as if she was here beside him, lying next to him with one arm and her head draped lazily across his chest as she fell asleep to him, running his fingers gently through her smooth locks. Even her touch, her sweet smell. It felt so real, as if it was not the first time heโd had her in his arms.
With a quick inhale and a shift of his head, his hand dropped limply onto the soft covers, and the rest of her figure faded from his mind. Her memory would always linger with a bit of uncertainty that threatened to spoil his mood. How strange, Yunho thought to himself as his eyes reopened to see the soft, plush bedding covering his bare chest. In the distant corner, moonlight continued to filter into the large room, bathing all the furniture in a silver glow. For the longest while, he remained motionless and stared at the ceiling. The cold sheets caressed him lovingly as he curled against his pillow.
He heard the whispers, the voices, coming from the walls, filling his brain, filling his very being. Was he becoming crazy? Every night, it grew stronger; the voices, her, trying to draw him into an ever-growing darkness.
โYunho,โ the whispers, the dead hiss came, causing him to clutch his pillow with white-knuckle strength, nails digging into the silky material as he clutched his head with his other hand.
They were always there; waiting for him, waiting for him to do... something.
โYunho,โ her breath, her breath was against his ear now.
โYunho,โ she hissed. โYunho, Yunho, Yunho. Donโt you want me, Yunho? Do you not want me? Yunho? Yunho!โ
He closed his eyes, gripping the blankets in both fists, feeling her invisible touch on the backs of his shoulders. โNo,โ he whimpered, โnot anymore, not anymore!โ
The feel of her icy fingers on his chest sent ice into his heart. It felt like death in his ears, in his chest, in his mouth. Yunho squeezed his eyes shut tightly as he felt a hard shudder overcome his entire form.
โGive. Me. What. You. Promised.โ Her voice grew louder, a silent roar, and louder, her words growing indistinguishable as he sat in silence, a tremor overtaking his body. Yunho could feel her fingernails drawing small circles and spirals upon his bare skin, and her mouth was cold upon his ear, her breath harsh and wet. โYou promised me eternal life. Give it to me.โ
He opened his eyes, staring at the ghostly apparition of his late wife who still continued to hover before him, grinning and chanting in that harsh, otherworldly voice. โI canโt... Not when the body you want is a breathing, living thing!โ Yunho gritted through clenched teeth.
โDonโt you love me?โ She snarled. โDonโt you miss me?โ
He stiffened, not wanting to reply, as the sight of his former, most beloved person standing before him with such unabashed cruelty was too much. He kept silent, hearing his heart beat faster as the cold spread in his chest, like frost burning up the core of him.
โTell me, dear,โ her voice lowered, cooing and breathless in his ear, โdo you still love me, after everything that happened, Yunho?โ
He didnโt know how to reply. So many mixed emotions rose and threatened to overflow. The coldness in his bones and her heavy weight, the dread, the dread all sinking down upon him until he finally whispered,
โYes...โ Yunho looked at her, unflinching. His resolve held for this one second as the memories, the old fears, the hatred flooded him all the same.
She smiled, eyes glittering darkly in the candlelight.
โDo you wish you had me by your side, again?โ She cooed and reached forward. โShe looks like me, you know. You can have us both. Tell me, tell me.โ
Yunho closed his eyes, shaking them, wanting to rid himself of the ghost before his eyes, his ghost, the vision before him, and then he cried aloud, โNO!โ
And when he felt the warm hand that touched his arm gently, Yunho flinched away with a heavy gasp.
โMy lord?โ the quiet voice came. Yunho opened his eyes, the ghost of his late wife, nowhere to be seen. In her place stood his very real, breathing person.
You looked down at his sweat drenched body, a clear sign he was either having fever or having a nightmare. You head the sounds coming from his bedroom and dashed towards him to investigate the situation. Now, standing at the bedside and examining his poor sleeping figure and seeing how he tossed and turned.
โAre you alright?โ you asked hesitantly, not caring that you were just in a thin layer of chemise that barely concealed all of your most intimate areas, or that he was naked from the waist up.
โMmhm,โ his throat muscles bobbed. It was all Yunho could manage through the overwhelming need and desire. You. He needed you. He needed someone else. Anyone other than her. She would not haunt him for long, not when he had a mind and will of his own. Not when he had you.
โI-I....โ the man shook his head, closing his eyes for a moment before letting them flutter open. He grabbed your hand, pulling you towards him so that you lay flat on the bed, his body hovering over you.
The blanket had moved aside and fell completely from his torso to the mattress, showing off the stunning upper body, tousled and messed hair, and a glint in his half-closed gaze. You exhaled shakily, still unmoving.
โPlease. I... just want you. Just tonight,โ he breathed, looking up from your cleavage. He captured your lips with his own, leaving you speechless and breathless. โStay with me tonight.โ
The gentleness, his words, and his touch seemed to burn into your skin. His hands moved up your arms, pinning them above your head as he devoured your mouth and your neck. His knee settled nicely between your legs. With every word, his teeth, tongue and lips trailed over the tender skin of your exposed throat and collarbone.
It felt right; his firm, warm body pressed to your own, the gentle tugs of his hands upon the flimsy chemise, the slow drag of his thumb across your lips, the feather-light brushes and caresses, his mouth upon yours, exploring, dominating, yet coaxing out your desire. The soft noises you make and the whimpers of his name urged him forward, spurring his hunger.
โDo you want me? Tell me you want me,โ he pleaded. His mouth was so close that you felt his hot breath washing over your wet lips, making you shiver. โPlease.โ
โI want you,โ you gasped, overwhelmed by your desires and needs and unable to say more. Your lips yearned for him. For his taste and his scent. You wanted nothing more but him.
His chest rose and fell rapidly, trying to catch his breath as he reached down with one hand to press a finger to your slick sex, dragging it upwards, sending your hips bucking and arching from the pleasurable shock that ripped through you. โYunho....โ
โI...โ his breath quivered. โIs it alright?โ
He was hard, unbelievably hard against your thigh and his tent was already apparent in the loose trousers he was wearing. Even so, his kind nature urged him to be respectful. โIs it?โ
He glanced up and down at your bare and quivering form, taking in the curves of your soft, lush skin and the dips between. His gaze lingered on your full and luscious breasts with its stiffened peaks, so tantalizingly inviting and luring. You wiggled one of your hands free, grasping the hand that was on your sex, squeezing it as you smiled tenderly.
โYes,โ you breathed softly, and his eyes bore back at you in shock. โI am willing.โ
After hearing your words of consent, he inserted a long finger inside you. You gasped loudly and arched your back as his mouth latched onto one hardened bud, taking your breast into his mouth, sucking greedily and harshly. He added another finger and began to slide his fingers in and out, allowing the tip of his fingers to run across that spot he knew would have you writhing in pleasure.
You bucked your hips again to meet the pace of his fingers, as you tried your best not to moan louder and louder. โP-please... Oh! Yunho, please.โ
It felt as if every nerve ending in your body was alight and ready for his touch, to feel his heat wash over every inch of your exposed skin, even his soft breathing. As he pressed his body flat and covered your entire form with his own, the entire room seemed to dim, your hearing and vision a mess, every sound muted and faraway as you succumbed to the feel of Yunhoโs hands and the press of his weight over you, which somehow reassured you.
โHush now,โ his low voice tickled your ear, making your entire body shake with anticipation and need. โLet me take care of you. Iโll make you feel good. So good.โ
You found yourself moaning from his husky and thick voice alone. He rolled his hips to emphasise the point, dragging the hardened bulge against the inside of your thigh. He removed his hand from you only to rip your chemise cleanly down the middle.
โIโll get you another one,โ he chuckled when he saw your surprised face.
โHow am I supposed to go back to my bedroom?โ you managed between huffs.
โYou donโt,โ Yunho murmured, taking hold of both your hands in one grip again, pinning them together. โI intend to keep you all night long until the sun rises. Weโll see if you are not absolutely spent by then.โ
Before you could utter another word, Yunho trailed, kissed down the valley between your breasts and all the way to your stomach, dipping the tip of his tongue in the tiny curve where the muscles in the belly are. Your senses were over flooded from every lick and stroke, each graze of his teeth, his hands and his mouth, kissing you, kneading you, stroking you, anywhere and everywhere.
Suddenly, there was an empty feeling in the pit of your stomach when you noticed Yunho rising. His hands made quick work of undoing the cord that kept his pants tied in place.
โOpen your legs,โ Yunhoโs hot breath fanned over your cheeks as he breathed raggedly. He urged, squeezing the soft flesh of your thigh lightly. โWider.โ
Slowly and agonizingly, he crawled down your body, his fingers all the way to the inner part of your thighs, pulling and spreading them apart for him. Without a warning, his tongue laved at your damp opening, drinking your essence greedily as you writhed and moaned beneath him. A firm hand went to your stomach, preventing you from moving too much as Yunhoโs lips covered your swollen folds. You pulled on the silken strands of his hair, earning a growl of approval, and moaned softly at the sensation of his warm breaths fanned over your clit. His tongue swirled over your entrance, driving you absolutely mad.
With his talented and torturous mouth, Yunho didnโt take much longer until your release spasmed throughout your entire being, shattering your every thought and coherency. Yunho didnโt relent and continued devouring you, prolonging your release until you were forced to use your free hand to push his head away. When your breathing finally evened out, you felt Yunho shift, his weight above your pelvis, and his solid erection laid heavily between the apex of your thighs.
โY/N,โ his hands moved to your wrists once again. And, as you felt him enter your walls and slide deliciously along your soaking, moist flesh, he took your lips in a kiss, claiming your mouth and drawing a breathless gasp from you as his length filled you and stretched you most deliciously, stealing your breath away. The two of you settled into a delicious rhythm with his cock stroking in and out and with the thrust of his hips in perfect sync with your rocking. โYou feel so good.โ
The deep grunts that followed had you burying your nails into his skin, the need for him increasing as you could almost hear the thudding of your heart as Yunhoโs movements got quicker, causing you to arch against his chest. There were no thoughts in your mind and you couldnโt help the wanton moans that escaped your lips. With his hand guiding your leg around him and the other supporting him, Yunho sank his length deeper inside you.
โSo warm,โ he shuddered in disbelief as his breathing became more ragged, the scent of his cologne and arousal hitting you directly, along with the droplets of sweat that began to form on his back. You moaned and whispered his name repeatedly like it was a spell, knowing that he needed more than just your words.
His low growls were so close to your ear, urging you to continue chanting his name with every movement until a small whimper broke from you, a soft, โoh.โ
โLook at me,โ his lips grazed your earlobe as you mewled and jerked your hips to meet his deep thrust. He needed to see the look of complete surrender on your face when he finished you. He wanted to see every detail.
โYunho,โ you let out a soft moan.
โNow,โ he whispered in a commanding tone that sent shivers down your spine, drawing a gasp from you as he snapped his hips, embedding himself to the hilt. โCome for me.โ
A cry, sweet and wanting, was forced from his lips, as Yunho wrapped his hands around your throat, capturing the moan in another kiss, making you feel the warmth radiating between your connected bodies. He breathed heavily and groaned at the contact of his throbbing erection in your heat. As if responding to your need, he squeezed the globes of your rear gently before continuing his rough and hurried strokes.
When the tension and pressure grew too great, Yunho couldnโt control himself. He climaxed with a deep grunt and your name. All his strength seemed to abandon him and his weight toppled over, leaning on you. Immediately, he shifted and placed a kiss at the top of your forehead, gathering you close to his sweat slicked skin with your head nestled under his chin.
Your hands roamed all over the expanse of Yunhoโs broad, warm chest as his heartbeat started to slow. One hand pushed a stray strand away from his face, revealing flushed cheeks, moist and slightly swollen lips, and tousled hair. Yunho looked gorgeous and absolutely stunning underneath the pale moon that continued to provide its illuminating light.
His eyelids fluttered open to look directly into yours. With his right hand, he drew your face towards him. Your breath hitched as Yunho rested his forehead upon yours, his thumb grazing across your lips. He sucked in a deep breath and whispered something in a tone that you could not catch. Afterward, he moved downwards and connected his mouth to yours, kissing your lips fervently, relishing every little moan you emitted.
โYouโre beautiful,โ he uttered in the brief pauses between kisses, making you chuckle. โAre you alright?โ
โI should be asking you that,โ you said. โWhat happened to you earlier?โ
With a furrowed expression, you witnessed the dark look that crossed Yunhoโs handsome features. The way he carried himself, the quiet elegance he always displayed. It was all still the same, but there was also something hidden and tucked behind his person. Like he carried a heavy burden on his shoulders. Yunho shook his head. โThereโs... a lot of things thatโs happened, Y/N. Itโll take a long time to explain.โ
โWell, Iโm not going anywhere,โ you replied quietly, brushing a thumb against his cheek.
Yunho merely looked at you, studying every minute detail of your face, committing everything to memory. At that moment, there was nothing else but you and Yunho. Nothing and no one could have this. And the way you spoke, the way your gentle hands moved across his skin as you spoke, the very fact that he was talking about something he hadnโt touched upon in the years of your company, caused him to think. Maybe you werenโt going anywhere, after all.
โIf thereโs a reason,โ you murmured slowly and cautiously as you rested a hand upon his naked chest, โa reason that has prevented you to open up and talk, I hope that in time, youโll be willing to tell me what troubles you, Yunho.โ
With a smile tugging his lips upwards, a genuine smile, Yunho held you close. For the first time in years, there was a spark of hope and warmth he could feel and it was not a hallucination, no.
It was very real.
One month passed by relatively fast.
You were standing next to Jongho, waving at the departing carriage that Yunho and the children had departed in. Yunho and the children were heading to the capital for the holidays, as was the custom for nobles to do. Sujin was clinging on to you for dear life and refused to leave, wailing and screaming in anguish, holding you tight in her embrace while the other two children joined her in their wails. Their loud sobs drowned out all the noise of the bustling servants and horses.
โYouโll be back before you know it,โ you muttered, rubbing the childโs back soothingly and in a voice loud enough to be heard amongst the chaos. The toddler buried her face further into your chest, nodding slowly while sobbing quietly. โItโs only for a few weeks.โ
Yunho sighed and walked up behind, gently peeling off Sujin from her iron grip.
โYou have to let go, baby,โ he soothed and smiled comfortingly.
โPapa, no!โ she wailed, digging her face against Yunhoโs chest with a new set of sobs. The older gentleman gave you a helpless look and sighed. You only offered a supportive smile in response.
โThe sooner you let go, the sooner we can return and you can see Miss Y/N again,โ Yunho cajoled with the toddler, still not relenting her hold on his shirt.
Yunho waited patiently as Sujin processed his statement and pulled her face back, still sniffling and sobbing and hiccupping. She nodded vigorously. โUh, huh.โ
โAlright. Say goodbye, now,โ Yunho said sternly. The toddler pouted with tears dripping down her red face.
โBye-bye mama,โ she cried. โBye-bye!!โ
You stood there frozen and startled beyond belief. The children and everyone around them went still with astonishment as a sudden awkward silence washed over everyone and they stared back and forth. Your mind went blank and unresponsive, incapable of forming any thought and even a simple word as the small and fragile girl wrapped her arms around your neck once again, causing the spell to break.
โGoodbye, sweetheart,โ not bothering to correct the toddler. You embraced the little girl, taking in the smell of her soft baby hairs. With one final cry, the toddler released you. โIโll see you soon.โ
โJongho, keep Miss Y/N and the rest of the staff well,โ the nobleman addressed to the younger man with a slight blush dusted over his cheekbones. He offered an apologetic grin before sending a knowing look your way and nodded, retreating inside his carriage with the crying kids trailing behind. The carriage shook roughly and then, with the sound of rattling wheels, was off.
โMama, huh?โ One maid let out a teasing grin. โSeems like the little lady has already taken a liking to you, Miss Y/N.โ
โWhat do you expect? Miss Y/N is the closest to a mother figure that the young lord and ladies have.โ The house steward, old and grizzled as he was, merely hummed in thought, stroking his beard in contemplation as he watched the retreating carriage fade in the distant hills.
โI donโt mind it at all,โ you laughed. โSujin is three, after all. She doesnโt understand much.โ
โJust wait, Miss Y/N. In no time, all three children will start calling you mama. That would be adorable,โ one of the kitchen maids added. Everyone began to chat animatedly. โThe master already has affection towards you. Itโs only a matter of time until those adorable tykes start picking up on his feelings.โ
โWhat are you all saying?! That would never happen!โ You blushed bright red as everyone burst out laughing.
Jongho chuckled. โNow, now. Letโs all get back to our duties. The sooner we all finish, the sooner we can finally relax!โ
With Jonghoโs cheerful remark, the atmosphere turned jubilant. The servants immediately scattered back to their stations and went back to their responsibilities. However, Jongho stood next to you. โYou know he cares about you.โ
โHe-weโre not together!โ You protested loudly, waving your hands frantically in front of you. โThereโs no way he can like a woman of my stature.โ
โAre you blind?โ He laughed, patting your shoulder with a wide grin. โEveryone in this entire mansion and even the children have taken to you. Youโve fit right in like you were always a member here.โ
โAnd you? Did you like having me around here as well, Mister Jongho?โ You looked at him. You teased, a grin on your lips.ย
โMore than you know. To me,โ Jongho beamed, a look of pure relief overcoming his entire form. The burden that he had carried seemed to have evaporated. He nodded toward the large estate and the shrubbery in the garden. โTo me, itโs almost like you were here to watch over all of us. Because, if anything, there was no one that has loved us like the way you did.โ
โJongho....โ Your chest tightened. There was something about his eyes. Something about the way they took you and held you with utmost trust and admiration that brought joy into your heart.
โI know that, like all humans, Lord Yunho had his share of tragedies in the past,โ the groundskeeper began quietly, as his gaze wandered to the green hills and to the morning sun, bathing him in a soft glow and accentuating his firm jaw and soft, brown hair.
โCan you tell me... about what happened?โ you asked. โNo, never mind,โ you added quickly. โYou donโt have to if-โย ย
โNo. Itโs alright. You need to know,โ he gave a strained laugh and gestured you to follow him. You and him walked down a path in the enormous garden, Jongho taking extra time to make sure all the shrubbery were in check and that the plants looked neat, pruned, and trimmed to his liking. The both of you stood underneath a small pavilion and sat at a table facing the fountain.
โWhat happened to her?โ You asked him in a soft whisper.
โYou mean Lady Ara?โ His gaze lingered upon the lilies floating peacefully along the surface of the pond. He clenched his fingers tightly. โYou look like her, you know. She was so vibrant, warm, gentle, and beautiful. But during the last few months of being pregnant with Miss Sujin, her health and strength began to wane.โ
Your face showed concern. โHow?โ
โThe grand library,โ Jongho didnโt bother to meet your gaze. Instead, his eyes followed a lone dove that alighted near one lily. Its wings fluttered against the cool wind and the breeze blew through his locks softly. He sighed deeply and closed his eyes. โThree months prior to little Sujin being born, Lady Ara was reading a book that wasnโt meant to be read.โ
โWhat were they about?โ You questioned quietly and carefully as the younger manโs brow furrowed.
โOld magic,โ Jongho hesitated. He was visibly nervous and when you reached out to squeeze his hand, he didnโt stop you. Instead, he grasped onto your hand with such a hard grip, his face contorting and crinkling in pain and horror that you almost feared he had broken a bone or two in his hand. โAnd with old magic, came a price.โ
He swallowed and continued in a low, shaking whisper. โHer life.โ
Silence was the only answer he received. So, he continued.
โThank the goddess that little Sujin was spared the curse that was bestowed upon Lady Ara, but....โ A bitter, defeated chuckle was heard as he stood from the bench. He picked up the clippers that laid upon the ground and snipped a tiny branch. โIt would only be a matter of time before the curse took Lady Araโs life. She didnโt make it through and now her ghost haunts the castle.โ
โGhost?โ you asked.
โHavenโt you heard whispers? Chilling voices down the halls sometimes at night?โ Jongho asked.
โSo Iโm not going crazy,โ you whispered. โNo wonder I hear these voices.โ
โThe staff and the children canโt hear or see her,โ Jongho finally finished as he took his seat again. The old and withering rose bush branches were shedding their petals at a rapid pace as he pruned the branches and pulled at the weak buds. โBut Yunho and I still do. Ever since her death, sheโs been plaguing and tormenting both of us in different ways.โ
You chewed at the insides of your bottom lip. โWhy her?โ
โBecause her ghost is tied with that old book she read,โ Jongho said.ย ย
โCanโt Yunho burn the book?โ you asked. โIโm certain that would set her spirit free.โ
โWe tried, many times.โ Jongho merely shrugged with a helpless look. He stabbed his clippers on the wooden bench with a sigh. โWhen the first two tries failed, it got worse. Whenever Yunho attempted to do such a thing, Lady Araโs ghost would wail so loud and horribly. Yunho and I would find ourselves being paralyzed, unable to move or speak. And when we asked her what she wanted, she hissed that she didnโt want to go. That she wanted eternal life.โ
โJongho,โ you said.
He snorted a little and turned his head away in shame, not meeting your worried and alarmed expression.
โWhatโs going on?โ you asked.ย ย
โYou. She wants you, Y/N.โ Jongho pressed a trembling hand against his temple. โShe wants to take over your body.โ

Yunho lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling as the quiet sounds of the night settled around him. His mind, however, refused to follow suit. No matter how tired his body was, his thoughts spun endlessly, circling back to the shopโand more specifically, to you.
He was excited at the thought of seeing you again. It hadnโt been that long since he returned to Seoul, but the pull to visit the Emporium had been growing stronger with each passing day. He could already picture you behind the counter, scolding Wooyoung for his antics, before turning to greet him with that knowing smile, as if you had been expecting him all along. Whatever the reason, the thought of seeing you again filled him with a strange, almost giddy anticipation.
Still, there was a feeling he couldn't quite shake. The more he thought about it, the clearer it becameโyou were always there. It didn't seem strange at first. He had assumed it was just part of your role, that the shop was your domain. But now, it left a bitter taste in his mouth.
Have you ever left?
Wooyoung could move freely, coming and going as he pleased, yet you seemed bound to that strange, magical space.
Yunho turned over, restless now, staring at the sliver of moonlight creeping through the window. It bothered him more than he wanted to admit. The shop seemed to be both your sanctuary and your prison, and the realization gnawed at him, unsettling him more than anything else.
Why couldnโt you leave? What kind of magic was holding you there?ย
His phone buzzed on the table, a faint vibration cutting through the silence. Without even glancing at the screen, Yunho already knew who it was. He sat up, grabbing it with a sigh as he swiped to answer.
โHey,โ Yunho greeted, tucking the phone between his ear and shoulder.ย
โYou see the news?โ Gunhoโs voice crackled through the line, more concerned than curious.
Yunho froze, his grip on the phone tightening as dread settled like a heavy weight in his chest. โWhat news?โย
Scrambling to his feet, he headed into the living room, nearly stumbling over the coffee table as he rushed to turn on the TV. The familiar black screen flickered to life, and there it was. The words scrolled across the bottom of the screen:
Family of Lee Y/N files for legal declaration of death after three years with no leads.
โTonight, we bring you a heartbreaking update on the mysterious disappearance of Lee Y/N, a case that has gripped the nation for three agonizing years. With no trace, no leads, and no answers, her family has taken the devastating step of filing a formal request with the courts to have her legally declared deceased.โ
โThis move marks the conclusion of a relentless search that began with hope but has since dwindled to this painful reality. For her loved ones, itโs not just the end of an investigationโitโs the closing chapter on three years of desperate prayers and unanswered questions.โ
โIn a heartfelt written statement, the family conveyed the grief that has consumed them since Y/Nโs disappearance and the painful decision theyโve made to file with the courts to have her declared legally deceased:
"Over the last three years, not a single day has passed where we didnโt hold on to hope, praying for Y/Nโs return. But as time has gone by, weโve had to face the heartbreaking reality that we may never get the closure we so desperately need.ย This decision isn't about giving up on Y/N or what she means to us. Itโs about finding a way to survive in a world that no longer includes her.ย
We will always love our daughter. She will forever be a part of our lives, and this is something we will carry with us for the rest of our days. This is the hardest thing weโve ever had to do, and is a step we need to take to begin the healing processโfor her, and for us."
A heavy pause lingered between them before Gunhoโs voice cut through the silence.ย
โI didnโt think theyโd go through with itโฆbut I guess they couldnโt wait anymore.โ
"Yeah," Yunho muttered, though his voice was hollow. His fists clenched, knuckles turning white. It wasnโt fair. You were alive, breathing, movingโexisting in that shop. But no one would believe it if he told them. The world ran on facts, on things that could be touched, proven, explainedโand the shop was none of those things. It wasnโt on any map, couldnโt be found by search parties or missing persons reports.
To everyone else, the shop didnโt exist. And even if he wanted to tell your parents, what would he say?
"Oh, by the way, your daughter is alive, just running a magical shop that only I can find. She doesnโt remember anything about her past life with you. But donโt worry, sheโs doing just fine!"ย
The thought made him sick. If he said it out loud, heโd be dismissed as crazyโor worse, cruel.ย
The shop might have been magical, but it was also a prison. He saw that now. A beautiful, mysterious prison that kept you chained, hidden from the world. And no matter how much he wanted to free you, to bring you back to the life you once had, he couldnโt force you out. You were bound by something deeper than magicโbound by your own pain, and your decision to forget.
โMom and Dad went over to their house after they came back from the courthouse,โ Gunho interrupted, his voice softening with a layer of sympathy Yunho wasnโt sure he was ready to handle. โMr. Lee couldnโt stop crying.โ
Yunhoโs heart ached with the impossibility of it all. Your fatherโs tears, your motherโs quiet grief, the hollowed-out home where life had once thrivedโthey deserved closure, peace. But the truth wouldnโt give them that. It would only raise more questions, more pain.
He remembered the first time heโd visited your parentsโ house after you disappeared. The warm, inviting home heโd known all his life felt cold, lifeless. The laughter that once filled the rooms, the scent of your momโs cooking, the familiar hum of conversationโall of it was gone. Instead, there was only silence.ย
And then there was your father.
Your father had always been a man full of energy, always quick to joke, quick to offer a smile. But that day, it was as if your disappearance had drained the life out of him, leaving behind a shell of the man who once doted on his daughter.ย
Yunho could still see the way your fatherโs shoulders slumped as he led him up to your room, barely uttering a word. He had commented on the plush Yunho picked up before retreating quietly, disappearing into the background like a ghost in his own home.
He clenched his jaw, the frustration bubbling up inside him. All he could do was carry the weight of the secret, knowing that no matter how much he wanted to fix it, some things were beyond his control. The shop had taken you, and in doing so, it had taken the light from your family as well.
โCan you tell them Iโmโฆsorry. Just that Iโm so sorry for everything.โ
โWhat are you apologizing for?โ Gunho asked, Yunho could hear the frown in his brotherโs voice.
What was he even apologizing for? For disappearing from their lives when they needed him most? For not being able to protect you? The truth was, he didnโt know where to start. Every regret, every moment of helplessness, crushed him under a guilt he could never fully articulate.
He had been there that dayโthe day you vanished. He had argued with you, had seen the way your expression darkened, the way your eyes filled with sadness, and yet he didnโt stop. He thought youโd come back, that you just needed space after the argument. But when you didnโt, when the days stretched into weeks, then monthsโฆYunho had no one to blame but himself.
Your parents had reached out, desperate, but he was just as lost as they were. They had looked to him for answers, for some kind of hope, and he had none to offer. He had failed them. And now, knowing where you wereโwhat you had becomeโmade it even worse.
โI should have done more,โ Yunho muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. โI shouldโve been there for them. AndโฆI donโt know how to do anything else, but the least I can do is apologize and let them know that Iโm alsoโฆmissing Y/N.โ
Gunho exhaled deeply. "I'll tell them," he finally said. "But, Yunhoโฆyou canโt keep carrying this all by yourself. You canโt keep punishing yourself for something you couldnโt control."
There was a pause, the crackle of the phone line filling the space between them before Yunhoโs voice came back, quieter this time, like he was holding onto his composure by a thread.ย
โI know, but justโฆjust tell them for me. Please.โ
Gunho exhaled, pressing the phone harder against his ear as if it could bring him closer to Yunho in that moment. โI will,โ he said, his voice softer, filled with understanding.ย
"Before you go," Yunho started, the words faltering for a second, "I need you to do me a favor."
โ
That night, Yunho's sleep was anything but peaceful.
He stood in a grand throne room, its towering pillars casting long, imposing shadows that stretched out in the throne room like hands. The crimson red robe he donned felt suffocating, the weight of it unfamiliar, as if it didnโt belong to him. The heavy crown pressed down on his brow, making every breath feel like a struggle.ย
Before him, you knelt on the cold stone floor, your wrists bound by iron shackles that clinked softly with each subtle movement. You were a shadow of the person he once knew. Gone were the bright, flowing robes you once wore, replaced by tattered prisonerโs clothes, sullied with the grime of the dungeon from which you had been dragged. Yunhoโs breath hitched in his throat as he watched you kneel before him. It felt wrong. All of this feels wrong.
โLady Lee Y/N,โ the herald intoned, his voice cold and unfeeling, โyou stand accused of high treason for the poisoning of Queen Mina.โ
Whispers broke out amongst the members of the court, eyes darting between you and the throne. Yunhoโs fingers tightened around the throneโs armrests, his knuckles whitening under the pressure as a sharp pain coiled in his chest. Treason? His mind screamed, desperate to reject what he was hearing.ย
He had been told it was you, that all the evidence pointed to you. But as he looked into your hollow gaze, every fiber of his being rejected it. You couldnโt have done this. You wouldnโt have.
You were framed. He knew it as surely as he knew his own name. But what choice did he have? The kingdom demanded justice, demanded blood. If he refused to follow the law, what would that mean for the throne he had been sworn to uphold?
โYour crime,โ the herald continued, his voice carrying an almost sickening indifference, โhas brought great shame to this kingdom and your family. For that, you have been sentenced to death by execution, to take place before the court in a fortnight.โ
Yunhoโs chest tightened. The heraldโs words hung in the air like a death sentence for his own soul. He could feel the weight of every nobleโs gaze on him, waiting for his verdict, waiting for him to condemn you. But his heart screamed in protest. His mind raced, searching for some way out, some way to save you. His pulse pounded in his ears as time seemed to stretch agonizingly slow.
You lifted your head slowly, your movements heavy as though the weight of the shackles was nothing compared to the sorrow in your heart. When your eyes finally met Yunhoโs, the world seemed to stop.ย
Your lips parted, as if you were about to speak. For a brief second, Yunho held his breath, hopingโprayingโthat you would plead your innocence, that you would give him a reason, any reason, to defy the sentence that had already been handed down. But no words came.
Instead, your eyes told him everything. They bore into him with a clarity that words never could, a silent plea that tore at his heart. They were filled with pain, but not the kind he expectedโnot the sorrow of a victim pleading for mercy. No, your gaze held a different kind of anguish, one that Yunho had not anticipated.
You werenโt asking him to save you. You werenโt asking for forgiveness.
You were asking him to let you go.
Yunho gasped, his chest heaving as he shot upright in bed. His heart pounded violently as his breath came in ragged bursts, the air thick in his lungs as if he was still trapped in the throne room.
He squeezed his eyes shut, willing the image of youโkneeling, broken, pleading silently for releaseโto fade. But it wouldnโt. It felt too real to be more than just a nightmareโit had felt like a memory, like something he was doomed to repeat over and over, and no matter how much he wanted to change it, the outcome would always be the same.
Yunho paced around the kitchen, his brow furrowed in deep thought as he struggled to figure out how he was going to find the emporium in Seoul. Every lap around the room seemed to bring him closer to a resolution, but it still eluded him.
He knew the emporium was no ordinary shopโits location obscured from anyone who didnโt truly need to find it. But Yunho needed to find it, more now than ever. The problem was, the shop didnโt care about urgency.
Wooyoung, lounging lazily on the kitchen counter, tracked Yunhoโs movements with mild curiosity. His casual demeanor was a stark contrast to Yunhoโs anxious pacing as he let out another yawn and preened his face.ย
"Youโre going to wear a hole in the floor if you keep that up," Wooyoung finally said with a yawn.
Yunho stopped mid-step, standing at the edge of the kitchen, his shoulders tense. "Wooyoung," he began, his voice faltering slightly. He wasnโt used to thisโasking for help, especially not from Wooyoung. But desperation gnawed at him, and he didnโt have the luxury of pride right now.ย
"I...I need to ask you something."
Wooyoungโs ears perked up. He sat up on his haunches, his gray eyes gleaming with mischief as they locked onto Yunho.ย
โThis must be serious," he smirked, the teasing glint in his eyes only growing sharper, but Yunho didnโt back down.
"Y/N canโt leave the shop can she?โ
Wooyoung paused, his eyes flicking to the floor before locking onto Yunhoโs again. โWell...no. Wishes arenโt simple and they sometimes come with consequences.โ
โConsequences?โ
โShe asked to be its keeper,โ Wooyoung continued, his voice serious, without a trace of his usual playfulness. โAnd thatโs not a simple role. The emporium is not just some shop. Itโs alive, connected to realms and forces you canโt even begin to comprehend. For her to keep it running, for her to maintain its balance, she had to become part of it. And that meant binding her, not just magically but physically, to the shop.โ
โThen I need to find the Emporium in Seoul,โ Yunho said, his voice firm and resolute. But even as the words left his mouth, a shadow of doubt crept in. He hesitated for just a moment, and the question followed before he could stop it: โBut...where do I even start?โ
โWellโฆ for starters, magic is all about feeling,โ Wooyoung began, his tone light and almost mocking, as if the answer was the most obvious thing in the world.
โWhat do you mean?โ
"Let me ask you this," he said, voice dropping to a whisper. "Is your love for my master not enough?"
Yunhoโs eyes widened, frustration and embarrassment written all over his face. โThatโs notโ!โ His voice cracked before he caught himself, but the heat was already there, his cheeks flushing with anger. โOf course I love Y/N! How could you even say that?โ
Wooyoung tilted his head, studying Yunho with a smug satisfaction, as if he had anticipated this exact reaction. "Then why are you so hesitant?" he asked.
"Iโm not hesitant," Yunho said, his voice tinged with frustration. "I just donโt know what I did last time to summon the shop.โ
Wooyoung sighed dramatically, hopping off the counter and landing gracefully at Yunhoโs feet.ย
โYouโre so busy doing that youโve forgotten to feel. If you know where your heart lies, the emporium will open itself to you. If you were really that connected to Y/N, maybe your love would be enough to guide you back. Without my help.โ
Wooyoungโs words felt like a taunt, poking at insecurities Yunho hadnโt even been ready to admit. Was there something wrong with him? Was his love for you not enough? Had he been too caught up in the chaos of everything to feel what was right in front of him?
Yunho took a deep breath, letting the tension in his shoulders slowly unwind. His mind was still racing, but the sharp edges of his frustration dulled slightly.ย
"So what do I do, then?" he asked, his voice quieter now, less defensive.
Wooyoung stretched out, jumping down from the counter to land at Yunhoโs feet. "Trust your connection with Y/N. Stop trying to find it with your head," he said simply. "And start searching with your heart."
Yunho left his apartment with a determined stride, the weight of your journal tucked carefully under his arm. The familiar hum of the city surrounded himโcars honking, distant conversations, the faint sizzle of street food vendors still open at this late hour. But tonight, none of it registered in his mind. His focus was singular, every thought of you pulling him forward like a string tied to his heart.
As he wound through the narrow streets, his steps quickened. He didnโt have a map, not a physical one, at least. The journal he carried wasnโt a guide to the emporium, but it was the closest thing he had to your lifeline. Your drawings were there, etched on the pages, a snapshot to your life and the bond you shared with him. He could almost feel your presence with him as he walked.
With every turn, the pull toward you grew stronger, an invisible force guiding him. He didnโt know where he was goingโonly that he had to keep moving. Then, as he rounded a corner, a strange sense of familiarity washed over him.ย
There was something about this path, this particular stretch of roadโฆ
His eyes widened in recognition as he stopped dead in his tracks. Ahead of them, just across the street, stood the entrance to where you both had attended university. Yunhoโs breath caught in his throat. He hadnโt been back here in yearsโnot since he graduated.ย
Wooyoung, who had been trailing lazily behind him, stopped beside Yunho, his keen eyes picking up on the sudden shift in Yunhoโs expression. He followed Yunhoโs gaze, a slow smirk creeping onto his face as he glanced between Yunho and the familiar sight ahead.ย
โWell, would you look at that,โ he mused, his voice light but carrying a note of something deeperโsomething knowing. โSeems like youโve got a better sense of direction than I thought.โ
Wooyoung turned to Yunho, a familiar glint of mischief lighting up his eyes as he leaned against a lamppost. "So, what's the grand plan when you get there, huh?" he asked, his voice teasing, laced with amusement. "You planning to storm in like a hero and declare your undying love for my master? Sweep her off her feet?"
Yunho shook his head, his lips tightening into a thin line, his gaze firmly fixed on the path ahead. "N-Noโฆ not exactly," he muttered, his voice quiet but steady.
โI want to make my wish."
Wooyoung raised an eyebrow, intrigued. The teasing smirk on his face softened ever so slightly, though the playfulness didnโt completely vanish.ย
"A wish, huh? And what exactly would that be?" He knew Yunho too well to take him at face value. Something had shifted in Yunhoโthis wasnโt just about him anymore.
Yunho didnโt answer right away. As he stood there, in the quiet night of Seoul, with the lights of the city dimming behind them, the gravity of what he wanted finally settled in. It wasnโt just about seeing you again. It wasnโt about selfishly pulling you back into his world, forcing memories to resurface, or desperately trying to rekindle what once was.
No, Yunho wanted something deeper. He wanted something for you.
"I want her to be free," Yunho finally said, his voice breaking the silence between them. "I want Y/N to be free. Not bound to that place.โ
Wooyoung studied him for a long moment, his eyes narrowing as if he were reevaluating everything he thought he knew about Yunhoโs intentions. He had expected him to want something else, something more...predictable. Like wanting you to remember him, to rekindle your past and continue where things left off. But this? This was different. And for the first time, Wooyoung found himself... impressed.
Yunhoโs heart pounded in his chest as he approached the familiar door, nestled between the soba shop and the weathered bookshop that always seemed deserted. The floral overhang above the door swayed gently, an ethereal presence that almost seemed to hum in recognition of his arrival. The soft pull in his chest was undeniable now, a subtle but persistent thrumming, like a thread drawing him closer to the place beyond the door.
He exhaled slowly, trying to steady the nerves gnawing at him. He closed his eyes for a brief moment, gathering his resolve, before pushing down on the handle. The door gave way with a soft creak, opening into the emporium.
The shop felt alive, as if it was breathing. Every corner brimming with energy, the air thick with the hum of magic. And there you were, standing in the center of it all.
โ
โYunho!โ you exclaimed, startled as you caught sight of him standing in the doorway. Your heart skipped a beat, and in your flustered state, you instinctively waved your hand, sending a flurry of objects soaring through the air with your magic.ย
Books shuffled themselves back onto shelves, a teacup hovered briefly before floating to its proper place, and an assortment of crystals and trinkets rearranged themselves with an almost frantic energy.
Yunho blinked, his eyes wide with surprise, though a soft smile tugged at his lips. He leaned against the doorframe, watching the small whirlwind of chaos unfold around you.
You glanced back at Yunho, cheeks flushed as you tried to regain your composure. "I wasnโt expectingโuh, I didnโt think youโd be here so soon!" Your voice betrayed the nervous flutter in your chest as you hastily used your magic to smooth down your clothes, attempting to look more presentable.
โI didnโt mean to catch you off guard,โ he said, his voice warm and a little teasing.
You forced a light laugh, waving your hand dismissively even as the warmth on your cheeks spread further.
โNo, no, itโs fine. The shop usually isnโt this chaotic. Itโs justโฆโ You narrowed your eyes toward the mischievous figure who trotted past. โSomeone decided to take a little vacation, leaving me to tend to the place alone.โ
โI earned that vacation,โ Wooyoung quipped, his voice carrying a hint of amusement as he hopped up onto a nearby shelf. He stretched leisurely, clearly unbothered by your pointed stare.ย
โBesides, youโve got it under controlโฆmostly.โ
"Mostly?" You turned back to Yunho, mortified that heโd arrived to find you in the middle of what probably looked like absolute chaos. Shelves were haphazardly filled, some items glowing faintly with residual magic as if they hadnโt quite settled into their places, and the air smelled faintly of incense mixed withโฆsomething else. Something you didnโt have time to figure out right now.
โYou donโt need to apologize,โ he said quietly. โI didnโt come here expecting anything perfect, Iโm just keeping to my word.โ
For a moment, there was a comfortable silence between you two, the room now still and quiet after the flurry of activity. You opened your mouth to respond, but the words wouldnโt come.
Wooyoung cleared his throat dramatically from the shelf, breaking the tension in the room. โWell, since Iโm obviously not needed here, Iโll be going on another vacation. You two have fun playing shopkeeper and traveler,โ he teased with a wink before disappearing into a wisp of smoke.ย
With Wooyoung gone, the shop fell into stillness. The warmth of Yunhoโs presence closed in on you and somehow the absence of your feline companion made the space feel larger, yet somehow more intimate. Every breath, every heartbeat, seemed amplified in the silence that had settled over the shop. It was just you and Yunho.
"Iโve decided what to wish for."
Yunho's voice was soft but unwavering as he took a step closer, his eyes locked on yours.ย
"O-Of course. What might that be?" you asked, your voice faltering slightly. You fought to keep it steady, but something in the way Yunho looked at youโthe depth of his gaze, the quiet intensityโmade your heart race faster than you cared to admit.
"Your freedom."
Two simple words, but they hit you like a storm. The world around you seemed to still, the very air filled with the magnitude of what heโd just said. Your freedom. The one thing you never thought anyone could give you, let alone offer so willingly.ย
"Yunho..."ย
โI want you to be able to come and go as you please, to live your life without the magic chaining you to this place." He stepped closer still, and now you could feel the warmth radiating from him.ย
"Iโm willing to offer half of my life in exchange if thatโs what it takes."
You blinked, your breath catching as his words sank in. Half of his life? The enormity of his offer was staggering, and for a moment, you couldnโt even comprehend it.ย
"Why would you..." you stammered, your voice shaking with disbelief. "Why would you do that forโฆme? Thatโsโ"
"You deserve to be free, Y/N," he whispered, his voice tender but resolute. "And if this is the way to make that happen, then Iโll gladly pay the price."
The very atmosphere of the emporium shifted in response, as if the magic within its walls had taken notice of his declaration. The shop creaked ominously, its magic swelling as though it, too, was contemplating Yunhoโs wish. The lanterns overhead flickered, casting erratic shadows across the room, and the flowers hanging from the sky garden above swayed in unison.
"Ahem!" came an exaggerated throat clearing.ย
Both you and Yunho jumped, startled by the sudden intrusion. Hongjoong stood casually leaning against the frame, arms crossed, a single brow arched surrounded by wisps of glittering smoke curled lazily around him.
You felt your cheeks flush with embarrassment, the intensity of the moment broken by his nonchalant interruption. Yunho, on the other hand, remained frozen for a brief second, visibly caught off guard. His jaw tightened, but the initial shock melted into a look of mild exasperation, a heavy sigh slipping from his lips.
Hongjoongโs smirk deepened, thoroughly unbothered by the silent glares he was receiving.ย
"You were about to do something reckless," he remarked, his voice light but edged with a knowing sharpness.ย
Yunhoโs brow furrowed, his voice tight with determination. โI know what Iโm doing. This is my choice.โ
โHalf of your life?โโ Hongjoong paused, casting a pointed glance at the both of you.ย
Hongjoong wasnโt one to interfere without reason, but the way he spoke of the emporiumโs magic made your stomach churn with unease. Yunhoโs wish was far more dangerous than either of you had realized.
"Yunhoโs wishโ" you began, your voice barely a whisper, but Hongjoong cut you off with a swift raise of his hand.
โIs admirable,โ he finished for you, his tone softening for only a fraction of a second before turning sharp again, โbut dangerously naive.โย
โThe magic here doesnโt bargain in simple terms,โ Hongjoong continued, his voice dropping low, the gravity of his words pulling the room into silence. โYou canโt just offer up half of your life and expect everything to fall neatly into place. There are rules, consequencesโones that donโt care about the nobility of your intentions.โ
Yunho blinked, his brow furrowing. "What do you mean?"
โIf you do this, you wonโt just be giving up years of your life. Youโll be binding giving up your soul, your essence. The magic will take from you in ways you canโt predict or undo.โ
Hongjoongโs faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips, a rare flicker of humor breaking through his usually composed demeanor. He straightened up, crossing his arms casually as he studied Yunho.ย
โThatโs Y/Nโs journal, isnโt it?โ Hongjoong asked, his voice soft yet deliberate. He didnโt need an answerโhe already knew.
Yunho stiffened slightly, instinctively bringing a hand to his chest where a corner of something protruded from the edge of his jacket. The memories it contained, the emotions inscribed within its pages, were too personal, too sacred to be used as collateral for anything. The mere thought of it made him uneasy.
โYou know,โ Hongjoong began thoughtfully, โmagic thrives on more than just time or years of your life.โ His eyes flicked meaningfully toward the journal. โIt craves something deeperโemotions, memoriesโฆthe essence of who we are."
โWhat are you saying?โ Yunho demanded.
โIโm saying you might want to reconsider the offer. Y/Nโs journalโthose memories, those emotionsโit holds far more value than any number of years you could offer.โ
Your pulse quickened. You didnโt remember anything about the journal, couldnโt recall the emotions or thoughts tied to the pages of ink. And yet, knowing that it carried fragments of your pastโmemories that could belong to you but were now lostโstirred something deep within you.ย
"Myโฆjournal?" you asked, puzzled as you stared at the worn leather book in Yunhoโs hands. It felt foreign, almost surreal, to see it again.
โI promised to tell you the truth about your past andโฆabout us.โ His voice faltered briefly as the enormity of that promise washed over him. โI brought this,โ he continued, finally pulling the worn journal from his jacket, โbecause it was important to you. And I thoughtโฆmaybe it could help you remember.โ
Yunhoโs fingers lightly brushed over the journal, his expression softening as he looked at it. โItโs full of your drawings. You used to sketch everythingโplaces we went, people we metโeverything. You captured things no one else noticed, things I didnโt notice until I saw them through your eyes.โ He swallowed hard, his gaze shifting back to you.ย
โYou always saw me better than I saw myself.โ
He handed you the journal, his hands steady but his heart pounding. "I thought if you saw your own artโsaw what you felt, what you capturedโmaybe... maybe you'd remember something, even just a piece of who you were."
Your fingers trembled slightly as you took the journal, feeling the worn leather beneath your fingertips. This book had been with you through so much, carried pieces of you that even you didnโt remember anymore. You ran your thumb along the edge of the cover, trying to steady your breath. It felt strangeโholding something that had once been so personal, and now, it was like holding a fragment of someone else's life.
"It feels strange," you admitted, quietly. "Itโs like it belongs to someone else."ย
"I know," he said quietly, his voice gentle yet unwavering. "But this is still you. The person in those pagesโsheโs still here."ย
He reached out, his hand covering yours, and the warmth of his touch steadied you. The slight tremor in your fingers stilled as his presence grounded you, reminding you that, despite everything, you were not alone. You simply stood there, staring at the journal, a relic of a past that seemed unreachable. Was that person really still inside you? Could the pieces of the past be put back together, or had too much been lost?
โThis...is the least I can do for you.โ He looked down at the journal in your hands, a symbol of what he was about to give up. His eyes met yours, more intense than youโd ever seen.ย
"Iโm going to make my wish. Iโll give anything to set you free.โ
Your breath caught in your throat. Yunhoโs words carried a weight that both terrified and comforted you. He was ready to sacrifice somethingโperhaps everythingโto break the chains that held you to the Emporium.
โIโll grant the wish,โ Hongjoong declared, his voice slicing through the heavy silence of the Emporium. His tone was casual, almost amused, but his eyesโsharp and knowingโheld the gravity of what was about to happen.
โNo, let meโโ you began, stepping forward instinctively, but Hongjoong cut you off.
โWhatever that toy did to you, it weakened your magic. You canโt afford to take chances right now,โ he explained softly.ย
You had nearly forgotten about the plush toy in the chaos of recent events. But now, with Hongjoong's reminder, the faint sense of something missing from within you became impossible to ignore. Your magic had indeed felt dim, like a flame trying to burn under water. It left you feeling vulnerable. Unmoored.
You glanced at Yunho, who stood tall and resolute, though the slight tremble in his hands revealed the weight of his decision. The journal remained clutched tightly in his grip, as if he wasnโt quite ready to let go. The air around you began to buzz with energy, the edges of magic stirring, making your skin prickle.
Suddenly, the floor beneath Yunho lit up with a radiant glow. Intricate symbolsโancient runes and shimmering patterns of lightโspread out from under his feet, forming a large, pulsating circle that expanded to the edges of the room. The energy in the air vibrated around you, and the ground beneath your feet hummed with power. The magic was alive, swirling and converging, ready to set the impossible in motion.
The magic began to rise, swirling around him like a gentle wind at first, then growing stronger, forming a cyclone of light and energy. The glow intensified, a brilliant vortex that seemed to pulsate with the power of the wish. The journal in his hands began to shine, its pages flickering as if they were coming alive.
You felt a sharp tug at your chest, your own magic reacting to the powerful forces being summoned in the room. It stirred weakly, echoing through your body, as though the emporium itself was waking up, aware of the monumental exchange taking place. The air hummed with a potency that both exhilarated and terrified you.
Then, as quickly as it had risen, the whirl of magic began to dissipate. The light faded, dimming until the room was left in a quiet stillness. The energy that had crackled and swirled just moments ago was gone, leaving only a faint ringing in your ears. Your breath came in shallow, uneven gulps as you tried to make sense of what had just happened. The intense force of the magic had vanished, but something inside you had shifted, changed.
You feltโฆlighter. The sensation was almost surreal, like a weight you hadnโt realized you were carrying had suddenly been lifted from your shoulders. In that moment, something inside you brokeโan invisible barrier you hadnโt even realized was there.ย
Yunho stood in front of you, his eyes soft yet heavy with concern. He searched your face, as if trying to piece together the puzzle of what you might be feeling.
"How do you feel?" he asked, his voice low and tentative, as though he was afraid of the answer.
For a moment, you didnโt respond. You didnโt need to. You looked at him, the edges of a smile tugging at your lips, and before you even realized what you were doing, you reached out and poked him lightly on the chest. It was a simple, almost childish gesture, but it broke the tension that had settled over the room.
Yunho blinked, surprised at the sudden touch, but a soft chuckle escaped him. His shoulders eased just a little, and that warm, familiar glow returned to his eyes.ย
That was all it took.ย
Without thinking, you stepped forward, closing the distance between you and wrapped your arms around him. The embrace was instinctive, natural, as if it had been waiting for this moment. His arms encircled you, pulling you close, holding you as if you were something fragile, something he didnโt want to break. In his embrace, you felt a warmth that had been missing for so long.
As you buried your face in his chest, you heard a soft fluttering sound around you. It was faint at first, but then the sound grew louder, like wings beating in the air. You pulled back slightly and looked around the shop.
Pages. The journalโyour journalโhad burst open. Loose pages, filled with memories, sketches, and words, were now swirling through the air, carried by an invisible breeze. The pages brushed past you, each one holding pieces of your past that had been hidden for so long. Sketches of places you vaguely recognized, fragments of conversations you couldnโt quite place, and moments that had long since faded from your memory.
Hongjoong stood a little further away, his smile softening into something more tender. He looked on at you and Yunho, with a quiet contentment. His eyes gleamed with pride, not just in satisfaction with the outcome, but as if he had been waiting for this moment all alongโfor you to find your way back to Yunho.
The emporium, the magic, the chaosโit all led to this, and for the first time in a long while, he seemed genuinely at peace.
โ
โWell, well, look at you,โ Wooyoungโs playful tone rang out, breaking the comfortable silence that had settled in the room. He padded in with his usual feline grace, tail flicking with amusement, his gray eyes gleaming mischievously as they zeroed in on you.
โGetting ready for your date with Yunho?โ His voice carried that familiar lilt, half-teasing, half-genuine, that he knew would rile you up.
You shot him an unimpressed look, but the warmth creeping up your neck betrayed you, your cheeks turning pink despite your best efforts to appear unaffected.
โItโs not a date, just an outing.โ
Wooyoung raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. โA weekend getaway to the beach isnโt an โouting,โ he quipped. โCome on, admit itโyouโre looking forward to this.โ
You paused, fingers toying with the sleeves of your cardigan. The truth was harder to hide now, and you couldnโt help but smileโjust a little.
โMaybe. A little,โ you admitted, the butterflies in your stomach betraying the downplay.
But before you could say anything more, a sharp, stabbing pain shot through your head. It came out of nowhere, sudden and intense, like someone had struck you from within. You winced, your hand immediately flying to your temple as the ache intensified. The pain spread like wildfire, spreading until it became almost unbearable.
"Master? Are you okay?" Wooyoungโs playful tone vanished instantly, replaced by genuine concern. He leapt onto your bed with nimble ease, his tail twitching anxiously, his eyes wide with worry.
But you couldnโt respond. Your world was spinning, and suddenly, it was as if someone had thrown open the floodgates in your mind. You were standing outside of an apartment complex, your heart pounding. Yunho was there too, looking at you with an expression you couldnโt quite placeโhe wasโฆangry. He was saying something, his lips moving, but you were too distracted by the tears stinging your own eyes.ย
โMaster!โ Wooyoungโs voice pierced through the chaos, pulling you back to the present. His paw gently pressed against your leg, trying to anchor you. โWhatโs happening, Iโll call for Jonghoโโ
โNo,โ you interrupted quickly, shaking your head despite the pulsating pain reverberating through your skull. You didnโt want to alarm Wooyoung further, didnโt want him summoning Jongho over a headache. You forced the words out, struggling to sound convincing.
โNo, Iโm fine. Itโs just a migraine.โ
But you werenโt fine. Not even close. That memoryโYunho standing there, his face twisted in angerโfelt too real. It wasnโt just a fleeting moment or a dream. It was something that had actually happened, though you couldnโt recall why. You had forgotten it, buried it so deep that your mind hadnโt been able to access it until now. And with it came a flood of confusion and guilt.ย
What had you done to make him look at you like that?

300 followers event ๐
You notice the light of the candles as soon as you open the door of your house, taking the first step inside your apartment.
โIโm home!โ you said.
Shortly after, called by your voice, you noticed Jongseob coming out of his room to come and welcome you.
That day was your anniversary; one year had passed since you had confessed your tender love and the "roommate" label had turned into lovers. You had just returned from the small pastry shop where you worked in the afternoons to save up for your studies, and with you, you had a large plastic bag containing your boyfriendโs favorite cake.
Although neither of you was swimming in gold, you were happy with your flat. So you gradually decorated it and created a small home with all the amenities you could want.
โWelcome back, honeyโ he said to you, coming closer to steal a kiss from you and helping with the bags.
While he went to put the cake in the refrigerator you moved towards the small room, from where a soft light came.
As soon as you entered, you noticed that many candles were placed throughout the room, and in the center, there was a carefully set table. The window was wide open, and the view was of the city illuminated by the few lights of the night.
On the table there were two glasses, and next to them a bottle of your favorite wine. The plates had light red and gold decorations, and the tablecloth and napkins followed that theme.
There was also your record player, who carefully selected the records that had accompanied your evenings throughout that year.
โDo you remember our first date?โ the boy asked you as he entered the room.
โWhen we shared pizza, sitting on this sofa while we tried to guess about the lives of the passers-by under this balcony? How could I forget?โ you asked him.
He nodded and moved in your direction, seemingly unable to resist his desire to be by you.
He took your face in his hands and soon joined your lips in a long kiss.
โHow about we create a remix, maybe with a slight upgrade?โ he asked you, looking you directly in the eyes.
โI would love it,โ he replied, smiling.
Everything at that moment brought back memories of the first date, when after a year of living together, since you attended the same university, that boy had come forward to ask you to be together.
โHappy anniversary Seobโ
โYou too, loveโ he replied.
During your first date, while you were waiting for the food to come, the two of you sat on the couch. You could only gaze lovingly at Jongseob's slim physique as he was focused on the task at handโhe had stood up to begin the vinyl recordings.
During the first date, you were waiting for the pizza to be delivered, while now you were waiting for the lasagna - entirely cooked by Jongseob - to cook in the oven!
You had once expressed how much you would have liked to taste Italian food, so that's why he chose it for dinner.
He had carefully chosen the order of the music records to listen to, as he had presented them to you during your year together.
To ensure that everything looked its best in your eyes, he had even asked his mother to lend him some of the dish set that she had used for her wedding.
He had discovered your favorite flavor in candles, and in his pocket, he had a crumpled piece of paper with a short poem that he wanted to recite to you.
Now he was sitting next to you on the couch and was following the moves of the first date step by step. He had counted how many times your eyes had crossed, but like the first time, he had gotten lost in your eyes and had opted for a more direct approach.
He had turned to you while you were watching him the whole time - noticing how his face was bright and how he had changed in a year. You vividly remembered all the features of his face and how his expression had gone from full concentration to complete disorientation as soon as he had looked at you.
And now everything was happening again: your eyes had met, and the butterflies in your stomach had started to dance.
He had soon come dangerously close and had canceled the distances. Neither of you could hold back a smile, remembering your first kiss while you were living the umpteenth. Many quick kisses alternated with passionate ones while your bodies also got closer.
You took a brief break to let out some lovely laughs that blended in with the background music like they were the melody itself.
Smiles between the kisses, comforting scents, and the warmth of the bodies that united.
He had moved his hand from behind your neck to your hips- oh how he had become bolder.
You were facing him and found it difficult to keep your eyes closed, so now and again when he drew you away, you gave him a tiny peek.
You loved so much seeing that boy's face up close.
With an awkward and hesitant smile, he looked so attractive with the candles lighting him.
The first time you had been interrupted by the arrival of the delivery boy, while this time by a strange burning smell that began to spread from the kitchen.
As soon as it hit your boyfriend's nostrils, his eyes widened and he suddenly stood up.
"THE LASAGNA!" he said as he ran towards the kitchen.
You giggled as you moved to go and check it out too.
As soon as you arrived in the kitchen you saw him wearing two pink skates and an apron of the same color, as he took the lasagna out of the oven. He hadn't even taken the time to turn on the light, the light of the candles was enough; but he had chosen to wear the apron to avoid dirtying the outfit he had worked on to impress you.
Luckily the lasagna wasnโt burnt, but on the contrary, it had acquired a light crunchy crust that had made that dish even better.
You found yourselves shortly after at the table, savoring that delicious food while you remembered the times gone by, shared moments of the present, and fantasized about future experiences.
WE GOT ONE!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

Staring at the fire crackling, you try to hold back the tears that threaten to escape. When had it all gone so wrong?
Just last year, you had been enjoying your boyfriendโs Christmas show with his rock band, and now youโre sitting alone, the night before Christmas.
The crackling of the fire adds to your melancholy, the harsh cold winds blowing outside creating a gloomy atmosphere. You know you should forget like he has, but you canโt throw away two years of your life that easily.
The memories of last Christmas come flooding back to you, even as you try to suppress them. Memories of sitting beside the fire with Yunho, cuddling as you watched a cheesy Christmas movie. Or baking Christmas cookies together at his apartment, laughing as you threw flour at each other.
Turning to the remote controller, you press the power button, not expecting to see him on the screen. His band is playing, and you immediately feel a pang in your chest at the sight of him, his fingers dashing across the keyboard.
Even though heโs the keyboard player and not the lead singer, he has an air about him that draws you in, making it unable to look away, even as you know you should. Why is he still having this effect on you?
The song is one you recognize. โMerry Christmas, Please Donโt Call,โ by Bleachers.
Itโs a song heโd introduced to you last Christmas, and, even though itโs sad, it had been a source of joy for you in a way last year, because you remember dancing to the song with him, smiling and laughing.
Now, it really is sad.
When he gets up at the end of the song, leaning into the microphone, you furrow your eyebrows, listening.
โThat song goes out to someone I lost a year ago today.โ He looks right at the camera, his brown eyes sparkling with unshed tears. โIโm sorry, baby. I wish it had been different, but know that I never really stopped loving you.โ
You gasp, only momentarily questioning if heโs really talking to you, before you jump up, now determined to make things right for some reason. You know itโll probably end in more heartache, but you have to try.
Grabbing your keys and coat, you hurry out the door into the winter storm, unlocking your car before hopping in.
Even though the roads are horrible tonight, you know the way to his apartment like the back of your hand, only slowing because of the snow.
About twenty minutes later, you arrive at his apartment complex, hurrying out of the car, through the blinding snow, and into the lobby of the building.
You try to calm yourself down, stepping into the elevator and pressing the button to the fourth floor.
When you get to the floor, you walk down the hall, slowing to a stop in front of his door. Taking a deep breath, you knock.
It takes about two minutes, but the door opens, revealing a messy-haired Yunho, a few locks of his dark blue hair having fallen in front of his brown eyes, which widen at the sight of you.
โY/N?โ he whispers, his hand clutching the doorknob so tight you think he might break it. โWhat are you doing here?โ
โI saw the program.โ
โOh.โ
With a sigh, you rub your arm, biting your lip, really starting to wonder what youโre really doing here yourself. โH-How have you been?โ
โIs that really what youโre going to ask?โ Yunho asks, giving you a half-smile.
โWhat else would I say?โ you question softly, suddenly feeling stupid for coming to see him. โI canโt just say Merry Christmas or something stupid like Iโve missed youโโ
โCanโt you?โ he asks, his dark eyes searching yours. โBecause Iโve missed you.โ
Sighing, you frown slightly, โThis canโt be happening. I donโt know what I was thinking. Let me justโโ
He grabs your wrist as you turn to leave, making your gaze snap back to his. โEvery day without you has been torture. You came to see me for a reason. Do you feel the same?โ
โYunho, it doesnโt matter how we feel. It canโt work now anymore than it did then. We have different goals.โ
โWe donโt have to!โ he exclaims, almost desperately. โI canโt give up the band if thatโs what you want. You were upset it took up so much of my time? Iโll quit.โ
Your eyes widen as you shake your head, โYunho, the reason you couldnโt give it up for me before is because itโs what you love to do. I canโt take that away from you. I canโt make you live without it.โ
โWell, I canโt live without you.โ
His words hang heavy in the air, making you suck in a sharp breath, โYunhoโฆโ
โDonโt say anything,โ Yunho tells you, taking a single step closer. โJust tell meโฆโ
โTell you what?โ you ask, your eyebrows furrowing.
โWhat do you feel?โ he asks, just before he leans in, his face inches from yours. Your heartbeat quickens as his warm breath fans across your lips. โIf you feel nothing, Iโll leave you alone.โ
Youโre torn between wanting to close the distance and knowing you shouldnโt.
You donโt have to wait for long.
It feels like the world stops when his soft lips brush against yours for the first time in months. It isnโt like an electric shock, with fireworks exploding, rather itโs like coming home after a long time away. Like warmth and softness andโฆ love.
It only takes a few seconds for you to melt into him, the kiss deepening as he lifts his hands to cup your face, your hands finding his chest, his heartbeat quickens beneath yours fingertips.
After a few moments, he pulls away, his forehead resting against yours as he pants softly, waiting for you to respond.
โI wish I could say I felt nothing,โ you whisper, feeling a little helpless against your emotions. โBut I canโt. Iโve never been able to.โ
โThen give us another chance,โ Yunho pleads, his thumbs brushing across your cheekbones. โI meant what I said during the program. Iโve never stopped loving you.โ
โBut what about the band? What about all the reasons we broke up months ago?โ
โYou and I both know we were being petty then. And I can quit the band, like I said,โ Yunho replies, his tone serious.
โI donโt want you to,โ you respond quietly, making him furrow his eyebrows.
โWhat?โ he asks slowly, confusion etched into his features.
โI donโt want you to quit what you love,โ you clarify. โThatโs what ended things between us before. We quit on our love, and I wonโt let you quit on the band now. I was stupid to think you loved me any less because of your passion for music. Please donโt stop playing, Yun.โ
โAre you sure?โ he asks slowly. โItโll still take up as much time as it did before, maybe more, since weโve grown a little more popular now.โ
โI donโt care,โ you smile softly. โAll I care about is being with you again. And I wonโt let my jealousy over your time get in the way againโฆ as long as you let me come to your shows.โ
โEvery single one.โ
With a small laugh, you lean forward, pressing another soft kiss to his lips before burying your face in his neck, inhaling his calming scent youโve missed so much.
โMaybe we should get out of the hallway?โ Yunho chuckles, tugging your hand, guiding you into his apartment. โWe have a lot of catching up to do.โ
You smile shyly, nodding, as you let him close the door behind you both.
Three months later, youโre cheering for Yunho and his band as he performs, smiling widely when he finally comes backstage, his arms open as you laugh, throwing yourself into his arms for a hug. โYou did so well, Yunnie,โ you whisper in his ear.
He grins, nuzzling his nose into your hair, โThank you, baby. Youโre always the best cheerleader.โ
โCanโt say I donโt like the fake tattoos on your hands either,โ you tell him wryly, tracing the markings with your finger.
โOh?โ he asks, chuckling softly, his eyes sparking with mischief. โMaybe Iโll leave them on for a little while. And Iโll be sure to tell the stylist you like them.โ
โGood,โ you grin. โIโm good with anything now as long as you never tell me โplease donโt callโ like you did last winter ever again.โ
โWouldnโt dream of it.โ

"Hongjoong sshi?!" You gasped at the slumped figure that was leaning against the wall. Shining the torch on him, he squinted, he was covered in bruises and definitely bleeding somewhere.
"Hide me..." He breathed out, clutching onto his side as his face scrunched up in pain. You put your phone aside and went over to help him. You bent down, slipping his arm over your shoulder, helping him stand up. He winced as he stood up.
"Sorry!" You panicked, helping him into your store and closing the backdoor. As carefully as you could, you set him on the ground.
"Should I call an ambulance? Or the police?" You took your phone out but Hongjoong placed his hand over your phone, covering the screen before you could dial.
"No hospital, no police." He groaned.
"What? Are you crazy?! You're injured." You screeched. Hongjoong grasped your hand.
"Calm down... Take a breath... I'm not dying..." He assured. He was the one injured and yet, he had to calm you down as if you were the one that was bleeding.
"Okay. Tell me what I should do." You said shakily.
"Do you know how to treat wounds?" He asked. You nodded your head and decided to move him to the 'office' room.
"Wait here. Let me go get the first aid kit." You helped him lay on the couch you had left there before going to get stuff that you could use. You were not a medical professional but you did know basic wound care. Plus, injuries can always happen in the shop so you try to be as prepared as possible.
"Earlier you asked me to 'hide you'. Are you in danger by being here? Should I move you?" You came back, setting everything down.
"They should be long gone by now... Don't worry, you're not in danger." Hongjoong grunted. You felt your cheeks heat up, he knew what you were thinking about.
"We can talk later, let me fix you up." You began to clean the open cuts and put ointment on the bruises.
"Oww." He hissed when you dabbed the disinfectant over the cut on his eyebrow.
"Sorry." You squeaked and tried to be gentler, if that was even possible. After that, you placed a band aid over it. Once all the visible injuries were looked after, you stared at his shirt.
"C-Could you..." You wanted to hide, you couldn't even ask him to remove his shirt. Hongjoong smirked at your expression and removed his shirt.
"It's just a slash, I wasn't stabbed." He said when you were staring at the bleeding cut right at his ribs. That was the first thing you treated first. Hongjoong felt you look back at him for his expression with each dab of the cotton ball against the cut.
"Your salve works really well, by the way." He cleared his throat, lifting his injured hand up. You stopped, tilting your head in confusion before turning to look at his hand.
"Oh! I forgot about that. I'm glad it could help." You smiled when you remembered treating his hand for him.
"Do you get injured often?" You asked softly, seeing some old scars across his body.
"It's part of the job." He replied honestly. You nodded with a soft hum and quietly continued. You taped a gauze over the place where he was slashed.
"I don't know if you broke your ribs. But until you check them out, I'll tape them in place." Taking some sports tape, you skillfully tape Hongjoong's ribs. Hopefully, he goes to an actual doctor soon.
"I doubt they're badly broken." Hongjoong said with experience.
"All done. I don't think I missed anything." You stepped back with a soft sigh. While Hongjoong put his shirt back on, you were returning your things to their respective places. You grabbed some paracetamol tablets and a towel, wetting it in the bathroom sink, before going back to Hongjoong.
"Here, it's just paracetamol. I don't have anything stronger." You placed the pills in his hand and opened a new bottle of water for him.
"It's enough, thanks." Hongjoong sat up slightly and downed the pills. After he laid back down, you surprised him by reaching out to wipe his face with a wet cloth.
"Sorry! You can wipe it yourself if you'd like. I just thought you might be more comfortable." You stuttered.
"No, you can do it. I was just surprised." He closed his eyes, feeling you continue to wipe the sweat and grime off his face.
"Are you hungry? I can order dinner." You asked.
"(y/n) sshi, you don't have to stay here with me. I'm grateful for what you have done but you can go home. You've probably been busy working the whole day." He told you.
"It's okay, I usually stay late anyway. I've even stayed over a few times before. No big deal." You shrugged.
"Alright but if you want to go home, tell me and I'll leave. I understand that I can't stay because you have to lock up." Hongjoong said. You nodded obediently and took your phone, the both of you scrolling to see what food options there were.
Of course you wouldn't tell Hongjoong to leave. Yes, you barely knew him but he was gravely injured, you weren't ruthless enough to send him away while he was down.
"You should rest until the food comes." You said, taking the small throw blanket and draping it over him.
"What about you?" He blinked.
"I'll go get some work done, clean up a little." You smiled a little and stood up to leave the room, giving him some privacy. You took the time to tend to your plants and check on them.
"Hello? Delivery!" Someone called from the back. You put the broom down and went to open the door for the deliveryman.
"Have a nice evening." The deliveryman bowed. You bowed back to convey your thanks.
"Hongjoo- Woah." You stepped back in shock. When you opened the door, you were not expecting to see him standing there, pressed against the wall. His hand was resting on the waistband of his pants. Was he hiding a weapon? You hadn't even noticed it when you helped him into your shop.
"Just wanted to make sure it wasn't someone else." He said. You nodded stiffly and he stepped aside for you to put the food down on the desk so you could help him back to the couch.
"Let me get the foldable table." You went to the cupboard to get out the small plastic table.
"You really have everything you need here. It's like a house." He chuckled with slight amusement.
"Like I said, I've stayed over before." You giggled and went to get the food. When you came back, Hongjoong had shed his blazer and resting beside him was a knife in a sleeve.
"Sorry." Hongjoong must have sensed your discomfort because he put the knife into the inner pocket of his blazer to hide it.
"Thanks... Here." You handed him chopsticks. You sat on the carpet and Hongjoong slowly moved to sit beside you on the ground as well to eat. After looking through all the restaurants, you both decided to order rose tteokbokki and some fried food.
"Can you reach it?" You pushed the food closer to him so he wouldn't have to reach out too much to get it.
"I'm good." Hongjoong nodded and held his side as he reached to pick up a piece of rice cake. The two of you ate in silence, your mind was racing with too many thoughts now.
"Hongjoong sshi, if you don't mind me asking... Why did you not call your friends? And until now, you still haven't call them." You asked.
"Not worth it for them to go through the trouble. Plus, they'll just nag at me." He replied with a shrug.
"But wouldn't they be worried about you?"
"Maybe... You know what, they probably will worry a lot but it's fine. It's not like I'm running away, they'll see me tomorrow when I return home." He explained. You nodded your head slowly.
"What about your family? They're fine with you staying here overnight?" He asked back.
"Oh... I don't have anyone... I'm on my own so no one to answer to when I don't go home." You replied awkwardly, rubbing the back of your neck. Hongjoong mentally cursed, if he had properly read the file that he found about you, he would have known that you didn't have a family.
"B-But it's okay! I'm fine and happy on my own. It's been like that for my whole life so I'm used to it." You quickly added, worried that he would feel guilty for asking.
"I know how you feel, I was on my own for so long as well before I met my brothers." He smiled softly.
"Oh, you're brothers?" Your eyes widened.
"Chosen family, as people call it. A bunch of people that couldn't fit into society came together to form our own family. Sounds a lot like a comic book or movie, right?" He laughed.
"Yes but it's sweet that you all found people that you could rely on." You giggled with a smile.
"I'm grateful for them." He agreed with a nod.
"You know, Mrs Kim used to talk about you all the time and it always made me wonder what it would be like to meet you." You said without a though. But judging from the way Hongjoong stiffened and how the comfortable smile on his face disappeared, you knew...
"Hongjoong sshi! I'm sorry, I just... I always speak without thinking. I'm sorry." You panicked. Hongjoong clenched his jaw before taking a deep breath.
"It's fine. I'm full." He stated, putting his chopsticks down. Now you didn't have an appetite too, why did you screw things up?
"I'm sorry, I-"
"I already said it's fine, (y/n)." Hongjoong hissed, dropping the formality. You pursed your lips, chewing the inside of your cheek like a child that just got reprimanded.
"I'll just clear up and you can rest here." You gathered all the trash before Hongjoong could say anything.
"If you need anything, I'll be outside." You quickly said and scurried out of there.
"Great job, you chased her out of her own place." Hongjoong grumbled, scolding himself as he slumped against the couch. He slowly grabbed the foldable table and put it back for you. After sitting there for a bit, Hongjoong grabbed his phone and sent a text out to one of the Ateez members.
"(y/n), you idiot." You slapped your forehead. You threw the trash outside and washed your hands in the small bathroom.
While there was no soap for you to shower or fresh clothes for you to change into, you grabbed a small towel and wiped yourself down to feel a little fresher.
"Ah, I'm so tired." You sighed, falling back into the chair behind the counter. There wasn't much for you to do here but you were listless so you went to your botany table and grabbed your botany book.
"(y/n) sshi?" Hongjoong opened the door and poked his head out when he saw you fast asleep.
"Mmmh..." You stirred, burying your face further into your folded arms to get comfortable. You laid on your open book.
"Hyung, I'm he-"
"Shhhh." Hongjoong hushed the taller, who blinked back in surprised.
"Geez, hyung. You look terrible. You sure you don't me to call our doctor?" Yunho winced, seeing that disheveled state the captian was in. Hongjoong rolled his eyes.
"That's what happens when you get jumped. Anyway I'm sure I don't need a doctor, Yunho. I should wake her up and send her home. This is no place to sleep." Hongjoong turned to look back at where you were. Yunho craned his neck to see you sleeping at the counter.
"Up to you. By the way, I need your keys, I brought one of our men to drive your car home. You're in no shape to drive." Yunho said.
"Fine. Wait here." Hongjoong put his car keys in Yunho's hand and walked back to the shop. For a few seconds, he stood there, how was he supposed to wake you?
"(y/n) sshi...?" He shook your gently, not wanting to scare you too much. It took a while for your eyes to open and you flinched.
"Oh my!" You jumped, realising that you had fallen asleep.
"Sorry to scare you, my transport is here. But let me drop you home first. It's the least I could do after all that you've done for me tonight." Hongjoong informed.
"I didn't even know I fell asleep... You don't have to, Hongjoong sshi. You're injured, you should get home and rest." You yawned.
"I want to. And it'll make me feel better knowing you got home safely." He smiled.
"Alright, if you're sure..." You stood up. Hongjoong stepped aside to give you space while you cleared up and grabbed your things. He waited at the back door, talking to Yunho. You tried to be fast, you didn't want to make him and whoever was with him wait too long for you since it was so late.
"Oh, hello." You stopped and bowed deeply to Yunho. You remember seeing him at the funeral, he was close with Hongjoong, one of his 'brothers'. He was very tall and good looking.
"(y/n) sshi, right? Nice to meet you, I'm Yunho." He smiled. Even you were blown away by how handsome he was when he smiled.
"Thank you for taking care of our leader here." Yunho snickered while Hongjoong glared daggers into Yunho's head.
"It's no worry at all." You replied softly. The two waited for you to properly lock up before Yunho led the two of you to the car. He did try to support Hongjoong.
"Stop that." Hongjoong slapped Yunho's arms away, preferring to walk on his own.
"Let me help, hyung~" Yunho said. Hongjoong flipped him off and continued limping. You smiled, watching them from the back.
"Hyung, that's very uncouth behaviour, especially in front of a lady." Yunho teased, opening the door to the G-Wagon for you while Hongjoong went to the other side to get into the car himself. He held his hand out to you to help you up.
"Thank you." You cleared your throat shyly as you got into the back seat. Hongjoong groaned in pain as he hoisted his body up and into the back seat, leaning against the back.
"You just had to take the G Wagon." He hissed.
"Well, if you had told me that you were this injured, I wouldn't have taken it then." Yunho said as he closed the driver's door.
"(y/n) sshi, may I have your address please?" He turned back to you. You nodded and sat forward, reciting your address to him to put into his GPS system.
"Thanks. We're good to go." Yunho said and you sat back in your seat, fastening your seatbelt.
As Yunho drove, you looked out the window, still feeling a lingering sleepiness from earlier. It was rather late at night.
"You can sleep if you'd like." Hongjoong said, not looking up from his phone. He had been fixed on the device, the soft glow of the screen illuminating his face in the dark vehicle.
"I-I'm good. Thanks." You cleared your throat, focusing on the city lights outside. It didn't take long for Yunho to pull up to your apartment building. You were grateful you didn't fall back asleep. Yunho would have reached faster but he knew Hongjoong would kill him if he sped while you were in the car.
"Yunho, walk her up." Hongjoong said, not looking up from his phone as he was texting someone.
"Yes, sir." Yunho was out of the car before you could protest. He opened the door for you, holding his hand out again to help you out of the vehicle.
"I'm fine walking up on my own." You forced a smile.
"It's okay." Yunho smiled.
"Bye, Hongjoong sshi. Goodnight." You turned back to bow to the injured male. Yunho accidentally closed the door behind you before Hongjoong could properly reply you.
"Let's go." Yunho nodded over to the door. You walked with him trailing beside you.
"So, have you had your flower shop for long?" Yunho asked as you both stepped into the lift.
"Not that long... I've always been interested in plants and botany. But I don't think being a botanist would have brought me a stable income right away so I opened up my flower shop. I just study botany on the side." You shrugged.
"Ah, that's very practical of you. But botany does sound interesting. Do you make special potions to poison people?" He asked. You couldn't help but laugh.
"Yes, I make natural poison darts in my free time." You joked, making Yunho laugh along.
"This is me." You stopped before the door, fishing your keys out to unlock it.
"Thanks again for sending me back and walking me up, Yunho sshi. It's so late, you must be tired." You smiled and bowed. Yunho shook his head.
"It's fine. No need to thank me. I should thank you again for helping Hongjoong hyung." He repeated.
"It was no big deal, really. Oh! Also, could you help me return this to him? I said something out of turn and made him angry. I think he's probably still upset with me." You rubbed the back of your neck.
"Whatever it is, I don't think he's angry with you. But I will return this to him." Yunho tucked the silk handkerchief into his pocket.
"If you say so. Goodnight, Yunho sshi. Get home safe. And if Hongjoong sshi's injuries get worse, please bring him to a doctor." You said with a worried frown on your face. Yunho nodded and saluted obediently. He watched you enter your house before leaving and going back downstairs.
"Yah! You closed the door before I could say bye to her. Now she's going to think I'm stuck up or something." Hongjoong scolded him the moment he entered.
"Nope, not stuck up. She thinks you're mad at her." Yunho laughed, closing the door and starting the engine.
"Mad at her?" Hongjoong blinked.
"Yeah apparently she said something to you that made you mad. She couldn't even return this to you, thinking you're still angry." He turned around and handed Hongjoong his handkerchief.
"Oh... I wasn't angry..." Hongjoong said, looking down at the silk handkerchief, his thumb running across the silky material.
"That's what I said. The last time you were actually angry with someone, they ended up with a bullet between their eyes." Yunho snickered.
"YOU TOLD HER THAT?" Hongjoong screeched.
"Of course not. I couldn't have her fainting from shock. Although I'm sure seeing you beaten up like that is enough to traumatise her for a bit." Yunho raised his eyebrows. Hongjoong let out a long sigh as Yunho the drive back to their home.
"You didn't tell Seonghwa about what happened yet, right?" Hongjoong asked.
"Nope. Seonghwa hyung came back from his race and went straight to bed. Didn't even know I left, I think. But hyung, you can't hide your injuries from Seonghwa hyung and the rest." Yunho stated.
"I know. The main thing is to discuss those that were involved in my attack. No one dares to jump me." Hongjoong growled.
"Exactly. Whoever it is... They either don't know Ateez or they're trying to start a war. Although I seriously think they're trying to start a war." Yunho sighed.
"Well, if it's a war they want, it's a war they'll get." The captain declared.
