They'd been arguing for about an hour. Yelling at each other and throwing stuff all over the car. Before that they'd been laughing their asses off, for a good 10 minutes too. Until his phone rang and she threatened to throw it out into the rain.
At least that's how Amara thinks it went down by the looks of it. Her mom's car's only close enough to see the whole thing go down, too far for her to hear anything. All she can hear is Me and Your Mama by Childish Gambino blasting through the radio. She purses her lips when the woman leaves the car. She knows its her fault.
Although to be fair, Amara had no idea that Lakeith was with his wife this weekend, let alone in the same grocery store parking lot. She only saw his face clearly after Nia started playing with his blinkers and started yelling. She actually called to joke about seeing a guy who looks a lot like him in the parking lot.
But she called at the wrong time.
Amara grimaces as her eyes follow Nia who storms off into the store, probably to get herself a bottle of wine to calm her down. She turns her head back to Lakeith's car to find him frowning at her from across the lot. "Fuck," she mutters, scrambling to find a mask and her sunglasses. She quickly slips them on and slides down her seat, hiding behind the steering wheel in shame.
She checks stares at her phone waiting for him to call or send a lengthy text about how much trouble she was in.
Nothing.
Maybe he left, she thinks to herself. She shifts her body, positioning just enough to take a peek at his car. There's no one there. "Maybe he followed her into the store," she says.
A knock on the window startles her but she doesn't look immediately. She's afraid it's him. "God, I know we don't have the best relationship and that I haven't been to church in years, but please God, I am begging you to not let it be Lakeith," she silently prays as she turns her head slowly.
It's her mother. And she looks pissed.
"Thank you Lord," Amara chuckles as she opens her window. "Yes ma?" Her mother rolls her eyes. "Vula iminyango. Ziyasinda ezizinto," her mom demands. "Yes ma." Amara happily obliges, even getting out of the car to help her mother with the groceries.
After putting the bags in the trunk, the women are back in the car, ready to go. Right before Amara starts the car, her phone dings with a notification.
It's a text from Lakeith.

A Guide for Non-POC Writers On When To Tag White!Reader
Hey Non POC writers here’s a little advice on when to tag your fics as White!Reader instead of just Reader.
1. If you use any white coded language in the fic (ie, blushing, white knuckling, running fingers through reader’s hair, describing skin as “creamy”, pink nipples, etc), tag your fic as White!Reader.
2. If you have the reader related in ANY way (unless specifically stated that reader is adopted —although that still raises questions) to a non-POC character in the movie or tv show, tag your fic as White!Reader.
3. If you ONLY use pictures of non-POC women and children in your moodboards (that goes for gifs too), tag your fic as White!Reader.
4. And finally, if you get the sudden urge to give the reader in your fic a name, then it’s no longer a reader and should actually be tagged as an Original Character.
Now if you truly want to know how to be more inclusive in your fics, please by all means, reach out. My inbox is open for any questions you have. A simple Google search can help too. Or you can use my favorite Guide right here.
This is also not up for debate. I’m still going to call out authors on their lack of inclusion in their fics. I’ve said this a thousand times, and I’ll say it a million more: I’M FUCKING TIRED.
Enjoy 2023
i hate you debt i hate you credit i hate you loans i hate you rent i hate you widely accepted & legalized extortion of necessities
i can’t find words for my anger right now so here’s a collection of thoughts that share the sentiment
At CrossBones Graveyard, the unconsecrated mass burial ground for sex workers, the poor, and those who took their own lives is now marked by a beautiful garden and lovingly tended to by caretakers who see it as a sacred space. There are also clergy who do regular services of remembrance, regret, and reconciliation to apologize for the wrongs of the church and to honor the dead. There are no headstones here but there are flowers and bees and healing herbs and pilgrims who come from all over to pay their respects to the outcast dead of London.
